Zev perched atop a roof of a building within Dewford Town, dressed in black tactical gear and a full-face mask. At his belt hung six Pokéballs, a sheathed combat knife, and holstered pistol. A silent sentinel, he watched a small group of League volunteers and officials rush down an alley with precious cargo in tow: artifacts and treasures pulled from other Ultra Wilds.[break][break]

"Here they come," Zev told his companion, none other than his old associate, Cillian Quinn. The Beast opened a Pokéball, releasing his Gengar. "I'll attack from the front if you want to cut off their retreat."[break][break]

In the blink of an eye, he and Smoke disappeared with PHANTOM FORCE, reappearing in the alley in front of the advancing League team. His Gengar immediately launched himself at the group, blasting them with DAZZLING GLEAM.[break][break]

Lights flashed as they released their own Pokémon: a Boltund, Oinkologne, and Scovillain.

Where Zev departs, Gavin remains on the rooftop, obscured from view by the SHADOW MIASMA that spreads around him.[break][break]

Like a flashbang, the Gengar's DAZZLING GLEAM blinds and alarms the volunteers. One of them drops their cargo in a reflexive attempt to shield their eyes while others proactively prepare for an assault.[break][break]

The one who'd dropped the cargo picks it back up and turns in an attempt to flee to safety while the others fight... only to be met with dozens of blinking red eyes. Gavin's Stakataka BLOCKS the alleyway, its ordinarily cube-like form rearranged into an impenetrable wall.[break][break]

Cursing, the operative sets down his cargo and reaches for his own pokeball, sending out a Yanmega that darts back to assist its allies.[break][break]

Leaving his Stakataka on defense, Gavin's sharp whistle directs an Aerodactyl circling overhead to execute its SKY DROP on the Scovillain, the DARK PREDATOR's talons hooking into the dual-type and carrying it into the sky.

With Gavin's Stakataka blocking the retreat, the two Rockets were two against four. Good odds, in Zev's mind. Still, it never hurt to seize any and all advantage.[break][break]

The first order of business was getting rid of the pesky Normal-type. A sharp whistle directed Smoke toward the Oinkologne, who pawed the ground with a forehoof, confident it would survive whatever attack the ghost unleashed.[break][break]

It hadn't expected the Gengar to attack with BRICK BREAK. A high-pitched squeal of alarm and agony filled the alleyway.[break][break]

Meanwhil, Zev opened another Pokéball. His Nidoking emerged in a flash of light. The horned Pokémon smashed into the ground with shocking alacrity, tearing up the asphalt as he DUG beneath their feet.

Cracked asphalt from the Nidoking's DIG becomes a painful landing pad for the unfortunate Scovillain as Aerodactyl's SKY DROP drives them both to the earth. RAZOR LEAVES struggle to find cracks in the prehistoric predator's armour.[break][break]

The Yanma faces a similar struggle against the ROCK BLAST fired from a stationary Stakataka; not expecting the living wall to attack, the bug isn't able to dodge the cubes that dislodge from the top of the wall to launch themselves at their foe.[break][break]

They return to their position covered in chitin and hemolymph.[break][break]

Atop his vantage point, Gavin releases his Dhelmise, preparing to descend once the battle was over to scour the spoils.

Zev's Nidoking erupted from belowground, slamming upward into the unsuspecting Boltund with DIG. The dog flew and smacked into an alley wall before sliding to the ground before lurching back to its feet.[break][break]

Dashing out of the way to avoid the Ground-type Pokémon, the Boltund tried to ram into Gavin's Aerodactyl with WILD CHARGE. At the same time, the Oinkologne struck Zev's Gengar with EARTH POWER.[break][break]

A tsk of vexation escaped Zev before he clicked the button on his wristwatch. A brilliant light engulfed Smoke, enlarging the Gengar to a massive size until he blocked off the entire alleyway.[break][break]

Once more, Smoke unleashed a DAZZLING GLEAM to strike all of the opposing Pokémon.

As the Boltund CHARGES WILDLY toward Gavin's Aerodactyl, the prehistoric predator lets out a terrifying ROAR. With its tail between its legs, the Boltund is forced back into its pokeball as its trainer scrambles back from the shadow Pokémon's claws.[break][break]

They've won already; it's evident in the way their enemy struggles to find any possible retreat.[break][break]

But there is no retreat, and there will be no mercy.[break][break]

Without Gavin's whistle to call off the attack, the Aerodactyl sinks FIERY FANGS into flesh instead of fur.[break][break]

The air above the living wall glitches and distorts as the PHANTOM FORCE from Gavin's Dhelmise transports him closer to the action. The battlefield smells like Kanto, like fire and burning flesh.[break][break]

Drawing his gun, Gavin aims at a SCATTERBANG amidst the fallen supplies and fires. The resulting noise disorients the Pokémon left on the field, including the Boltund that springs free of its capsule anew, leaving them open to another attack from the Beast.

The fight was almost won. All of the League's Pokémon were injured and haggard. The humans themselves were battered, all sporting wounds, one screaming as their flesh burned.[break][break]

Zev did not like playing with his prey. He preferred quick kills, what he deemed were marks of professionalism. Clicking his tongue, he gave an order to deliver final blows. Gavin's Pokémon could clean up whatever managed to escape.[break][break]

A flurry of snow blasted through the alley, whirling around Zev's Nidoking. He raised his foreclaws, drawing the snow into the space between them, then slammed his fists into the ground.[break][break]

Spears of ice burst forth from the center of the League's group in a SUBZERO SLAMMER, catching onto flesh and bone alike. Blood sprayed in all directions. One of the crates exploded into splinters.

Like Zev Harcourt, Gavin favours efficiency.[break][break]

As the Aerodactyl's fangs find purchase and its victim's screams echo through air, the DARK PREDATOR does not stop there. Thick, stony talons dig into flesh as it tears out the throat of the officer, silencing his cries for help, for mercy.[break][break]

Sensing the impending attack from the Beast, having witnessed such a Z-move before, Gavin clicks his tongue to direct his Dhelmise. Tendrils of SHADOW spring from its colony to bind those who try to stumble and flee, pulling tight to HOLD them in the path of their demise.[break][break]

Already covered in blood, the prehistoric avian does not flinch from the spray of blood from the Nidoking's attack.[break][break]

PHANTOM FORCE brings Gavin into the action, into the frigid air and blood-soaked pavement. He ignores the carnage. It was all too easy to slip back into an old skin, after all, and war was a familiar embrace.[break][break]

He bends down next to the remains of the crate, salvaging supply.

Stillness descended upon the alleyway as quickly as the attack started. Zev stepped around his Gengar to join Gavin, picking supplies up from the ground as he encountered them. Though some of them looked similar to the treasures Team Rocket had acquired, some of them were unfamiliar.[break][break]

"We should take these back to our forces at Granite Cave," the Beast suggested when he reached the underboss' side.[break][break]

Uncurling his fingers, he revealed a mysterious ore nestled in his palm. Such an object would prove useful in either deterring the League or aiding Rocket's advance.
