Kouji walked through route 117, he needed new pokemon, he needed to get stronger though he found it almost laughable that he was out here like any old trainer, he wore a mask that concealed the lower half of his face, and a cap on the very top of his head. It wasn’t a particularly good cover, but it was what it was. ”Thanks for coming Kaname, anything you wanna research here?” He couldn’t think of anything to research in a place like this, but at the same time he wasn’t known for being particularly smart; let alone being a scientist.

The grass was as tall as anything, it was rather comfortable if anything. The calming breezes, the original skittering of pokemon, and the tree line not too far away; but he was poking through the grass first before he dived in deeper. Making as much noise as possible, he was a man who preferred the more brave pokemon who would come to him, fight him on their terms.

Route 117 was a verdant path between Mauville City and Verdanturf Town. Ponds and flowers everywhere, the perfect place to hunt pokemon. That’s why Kaname had joined Kouji, the scientist needed to build and refine a pokemon team worthy of battle. He’d spent days after that night licking his wounds and refining a strategy, now he just needed to locate and catch pokemon to test his theory.[break][break]

His mind wasn’t racing today, not like it was in Dewford town. The calming presence of nature helped; it was restorative even. There was no pressure, no missions, and no life or death scenarios to play out. Just two people trying to catch some pokemon.[break][break]

“There is something I want to try, but it’ll have to wait until I’ve assembled all my pieces.” He was being vague, in part because he wanted Kouji to be part of his little experiment. “But thanks for having me,” he added, as he followed Kouji into the tall grass. The two of them together would surely draw something out.[break][break]

Hm? He wondered just what that was. ”Anytime, but now I’m curious.” Kouji’s voice stopped as he heard rapidly approaching noises and cries, his eyes shooting towards the tree line as he stood up fully. A hand hovering over the pokeball that held his partner within it.

It was a sudden jump, two pokemon springing up out of the blue; it was fast, perhaps they had been locked into battle; but the Weavile caught sight of humans. Looking at the two of them as the Houndur turned and rotated to face that pokemon. ”I already have one…So, I guess I’m going for you, Houndur.” He said as he brought out Absol, a larger pokemon than the other. It was strong, standing tall, and was quick to dash into the fray, standing above the smaller pokemon.

Preyed upon and standing between two predators, Kouji took that chance to throw one of his pokeballs, an excited smirk on his face. ”Sorry, I gotta take my chances.” He said as he crossed his fingers; maybe he would have to fend off the weavile; but he hoped that it got the message.

Kaname had opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by the sound of rustling grass and the cries of Pokémon. His hand went for a poke ball dangling from his belt, as his eyes scanned the area. If they were going to be jumped by wild Pokémon, he would be prepared for it. [break][break]

Two Pokémon rushing toward them were a Weavile and a Houndour. Two dark types, not a good matchup for the psychic types that Kaname preferred. He pulled a pokeball from his belt and pressed the sphere’s button; from the resulting streak of light appeared an Orbeetle. “Go ahead, I’ll fend off the Weavile. Use Bug Buzz.” [break][break]

The Orbeetle flared open her wings and began to vibrate them rapidly, directing the resulting sound waves at the Weavile in an attempt to frighten it off with a super effective move! [break][break]

Kouji watched the pokeball carefully, as it rocked side to side, his Absol joined into the fray, his horn glowed black as he got ready to charge in, a fast charge that was the Night Slash; following up on the Effective Bug Buzz, a strong move to begin with. The Weavile clearly wanted to avoid it, running away.

But sound attracted trouble, issues, and nothing more; the two pokemon who showed themselves weren’t the kind he wanted to deal with. ”Come Scrafty. Lets show them that they need to leave.” He wasn’t fond of fair battles to begin with, and that was true even now. As his Scrafty jumped into the fray, the Zweilous and Accelgor, both were issues in their own ways.

One was one of the fastest he’s ever heard about, and he knew what his own Zweilous had been like, for all the hour it had been one. ”You want either of them? Will they work for your research?”

Two more pokemon rose to challenge them, an extremely fast bug type and an aggressive dark/dragon type. “Neither of these are what I’m after.” The scientist replied, pulling another pokeball from his belt just in case things got hairy.[break][break]

“Use Light Screen and then Reflect.” The Orbeetle’s spots glowed vividly as two shimmering barriers appeared one after the other around Kouji’s pokemon. “That’ll save your pokemon from taking a lot of damage.” He was content to let Kouji’s pokemon do the heavy lifting; they were better suited to this fight than Kaname’s Orbeetle was.[break][break]

“Are you familiar with the move Trick Room, Kouji? That’s what I’m basing my research on, so I need slow pokemon to run experiments with.” He smirked to himself, all he had to do was assemble the right team of Pokemon and he would never have to worry about being weak again.[break][break]

Kouji smirked as he looked at the pokemon that came up. ”Hey, that’s all you.” He said as he prepared to help out, he knew which pokemon to aim for, but his duo stood forward, Scrafty and Absol stood strong in that moment. Looking forward, they stood strong, and waited, the other two had fled but the present two were different problems.

”Brace yourself.” They weren’t the ones for him, Kouji couldn’t connect with pokemon that weren’t hiding a darkness of their own. It was twisted, but that was the kind of person that he was.

So had his pokemon charge forward, sucker punch aimed and ready to strike forward. He had gotten one pokemon, but he wanted more.

A spherical Pokémon with legs had appeared, its body wrapped in silken threads. A tarountula, not quite what he was after but it was too good to pass up. “Orbeetle, use Psychic!” The Seven Spot Pokémon’s eyes glowed briefly as it repeatedly buffeted the little spider Pokémon with psychic force.[break][break]

After a thorough battering, Kaname produced an empty pokeball and tossed it.[break][break]

Bug pokemon were interesting to Kaname, they weren’t as affable as other types. They possessed a cold exterior, a social exoskeleton that required work to bypass. But of all the pokemon Kaname owned, he was absolutely assured his Orbeetle was extremely loyal. He earned that loyalty, raising it up from a blipbug; and he planned to do it again if he caught this tarountula.[break][break]

Kouji stepped forward with a pokeball in his hand, looking at the creature in front of him, wanting to see just how it would work out. He looked at the Krokorok, a strong pokemon; a dark type just as he liked, and yet at the same time. ”Alright, Night Slash.” He told his Absol who dashed in, a fast slash just moments before he threw the pokeball.

It flew into the air. There was a lot of flow, the moment some began to rush towards them, more came; it was just like he had wanted. A dark type was a special type to him, it properly represented what he sought, and yet he wanted to see just what was in the heart of the pokemon across from him.

”Gonna be good having you along.” He said with a grin. Houndour and now this one, hopefully this would be another one to the team.

There was nothing about dark types that truly interested Kaname. They were unwieldy, untrustworthy, and a large majority of the time, violent. They were everything he disliked about others. So his face soured when he and Kouji came across more of them. “Orbeetle, Bug Buzz.” He said drily, and the Orbeetle compiled; her wings vibrating rapidly and unleashing a torrent of harmful sound waves in the direction of the Impidimp.
