Gunner collapsed against a tall outcropping of rock, breathing hard. He'd managed to escape the horde of strange, three-headed Pokémon that chased him and kyle lopez through the interdream mist, but he'd lost sight of the Top Champion in the process. Hopefully, Kyle had made it to safety. Gunner was not certain he could say the same for himself.[break][break]

After catching his breath, he glanced around, taking the time to survey his surroundings. He found himself in a section of the Ultra Deep Sea that was unfamiliar to him, though truth be told, it was all starting to look the same.[break][break]

The rock beneath him moved, and he jumped back, startled. To his astonishment, the surface was not solid stone, but some kind of flesh. Gunner held back the sudden urge to vomit. He ripped off his mask, seeking fresh air, but a foul stench filled his nostrils instead.[break][break]

Was this the work of the interdream mist again? He backed away from the undulating flesh wall and started down a pathway lined with tall, swaying kelp. Ahead, he could see movement — someone else? But were they friend or foe?

For what felt like the millionth time that night…he was pretty sure he’d gotten lost. Pink mist rose up around him as he wandered–quickly losing track of the direction he’d been heading in. It reminded him of the interdream mist in the otome route he’d played, but so far nothing strange had cropped up…so far, he repeated in a mutter to himself.[break][break]

He twisted around, catching sight of a silhouette through the mist. Were they even real? Or was this just a figment of his imagination? A prior expedition to the deep sea had already proven to him that it was a place full of illusions and warped reality. So, who was to say that this wouldn’t be more of that?[break][break]

Finally, finally by that point, he had a little more sense to be suspicious. It had only taken being duped from the jump, and then throttled in battle after that. Which had definitely made him realize that he was perhaps way more naive than he’d thought he was. Maybe MATIAS SILPH was right. Maybe he did need to toughen up, and be more suspicious.[break][break]

A frown slipped across his face as his thoughts ran away from him. Now wasn’t the time to be turning his anxieties over in his mind, was it?[break][break]

In a flash of light, his pidove was released. Small and unassuming. “Who’s there?” he called out, inching forward toward the figure. He could only hope he sounded tougher than he felt.

The person ahead of Gunner called out. Not for the first time that day, he was asked to identify himself — a difficult task for a man behind a mask.[break][break]

"League personnel," he replied, continuing to step forward until he could clearly see the other individual.[break][break]

Gunner did not recognize the person's face, so he scanned the clothing for any identifiable markers. His own tactical gear sported the League insignia as patches on his arms, backing up his claim.[break][break]

"Are you friend or foe?" the special agent asked, eyeing the Pidove. On his end, he hadn't released any Pokémon yet, though his hand hovered close to his belt, just in case.

“Oh. Well, good.” Lam breathed a sigh at the confirmation, though relief didn’t fully set in. There was nothing about this place that allowed for any iota of relaxed demeanor.[break][break]

But his guard came down just a little. Maybe enough to metaphorically peek over the top until it really felt like the coast was clear..er.[break][break]

If he was feigning or infiltrating the league, this guy had definitely pulled out all the stops.[break][break]

“Friend! Friend,” he repeated, one hand lifting. The other shifted to his back pocket, fishing out a thin wallet. “I don’t have all the, uh..” he gestured at his clothes, and the lack of badge-marked gear. Best he had was the trainer card with its few badge stamps, which he held out with a slight shrug. Maybe it wasn’t even credible.[break][break]

Shadows crept up around them, mingling with the strange mist that lingered. Felt like it might swallow them whole if they stayed in place too long. It made his feet itch to move. He stayed in place, though antsy. At least until the man eased up some.

Gunner tensed as the other man reached behind his back, relaxing only when he saw the wallet. A trainer card and badges meant little when Team Rocket could deceive gym leaders to take on their challenges, but Gunner had not survived long as a field operative without trusting his instinct. Something told him the younger man was no threat.[break][break]

The interdream mist, on the other hand, continued to swirl about the kelp forest, silent and ominous.[break][break]

Gunner nodded at the trainer card. "You can put that away," he said. "What's your name?"[break][break]

Without warning, the landscape around them shimmered and warped. Rocks, coral, and vegetation melted away, replaced instead by a terrible scene. The two men stood at the back of a shouting mob gathered in front of stairs leading up to a Pokémon gym.[break][break]

On the top step stood a man cloaked in shadow, his gloved hand gripping the hair of a woman kneeling beside him, facing the crowd. She struggled weakly, her hands bound behind her back.[break][break]

Gunner paled. The scene reminded him of the declan walsh route from RONDEZ-VIEW OF LUV, where the player was forced to execute the Celadon City gym leader. "Oh no," he whispered.

Tucking his card away, he nodded, green eyes flitting back toward the other. “It’s Lam. What should I call you?” Sir? That felt too formal, but might be necessary. He didn’t know.[break][break]

Anxiety needled under his skin, prickling at the back of his consciousness and setting him on edge. This place had a way of working its way under his composure, and he couldn’t stand. Not that he cared for the sudden shift away from the aquatic scenery too much either.[break][break]

As the mist warped around them, shifting to reveal other figures in an unfolding scene, something cold began to creep through Lam. A certain sort of dread shivering down his spine that urged him to step closer to the league operative, almost behind him as he peered up at him. All too quickly, his newfound companion was the least of his worries.[break][break]

The man’s face had gone near white as a sheet, making Lam’s stomach flip over itself nervously. “Wh-“ his voice faltered until swallowed the knot in his throat, “what’s happening? What’s going on?”[break][break]

If it was more work of the interdream mist, it was wholly unlike what he’d experienced with MATIAS SILPH not long before. But the panicky crawl of uncertainty did remind him of his trip to the Border with the elite four member, and what had unfolded there.[break][break]

“…should we stop it? We should, right?” he whispered, frantically looking back toward the sight of the cloaked figure and helpless woman before the jeering group. A tentative step forward. Could they?

Gunner hesitated when Lam asked for his name in return. It was only normal, yet he functioned best as an anonymous arm of the League government. But establishing trust would come easier if Lam could identify him, so Gunner lowered his mask, revealing his face, and said, "I'm Agent Graves."[break][break]

As their surroundings shifted, Lam's nervousness and unease heightened. He even seemed to hide behind Gunner. There was no way this man was a threat, the agent decided.[break][break]

"The interdream mist plays off our subconscious. Our dreams and memories."[break][break]

As Lam took a step forward, so did Gunner, leading the way through a crowd that jostled him from all sides. For a hallucination, they felt so real. He even shoved a man away who yelled at him to watch it, though he still could not see any of their faces. The figures stubbornly kept their backs to him.[break][break]

At least until he stood at the front of the crowd, looking up the stairs at the cloaked man and the woman on her knees. When Gunner turned to glance back at the crowd, their faces were fuzzy and distorted, glitching out with pixelation.[break][break]

The man at the top of the steps was yelling about punishing gym leaders who grew fat on the fees required to challenge them. Gunner could not see the man's face beneath his hood. His one hand remained fisted in the woman's hair, while the other held a pistol.[break][break]

"You!" the man yelled at Lam, gesturing with the gun. "Show everyone here how we punish those who turn their backs on the people!"[break][break]

The gun glinted in a sudden firelight. Buildings burned around them, deepening the shadows of night. When had it darkened?[break][break]

Gunner looked at Lam, tense, waiting to see how he would react.

“Agent Graves. Cool.” He nodded again. A bit dumbly. So he was definitely way more official than Lam. And that probably meant it was smart to stick near him—at least for a little while until he got his bearings again.[break][break]

Lam frowned at the explanation as his stare moved back to the developing scene. “These definitely aren’t mine.” And he hadn’t had the benefit of playing the Walsh route for context. So…these must be from the other man..?[break][break]

Not that it mattered as they shuffled forward, jostled against the hostile group. Pressing in around them in a way that made his skin prickle with discomfort.[break][break]

Being called out in front of the crowd was enough to make his anxiety spike higher. The attention shifting and causing his stomach to drop like a stone. His eyes trained on the gun pointed at him, then slowly shifted sideways toward the woman. Me..? He might’ve spoken it. Maybe it was just a thought.[break][break]

His mind had shifted elsewhere as a chill shivered down his spine.[break][break]

Get them, Lam.[break][break]

MATIAS SILPH’s words continued to linger in his mind days and days after the event. How naturally he’d been expected to fall in line. This was by far worse. But like that time out at the Border, his stubbornness flared. The flicker of fire light pulled him back, tension making him rigid as his head shook back and forth.[break][break]

“No, I won’t.” It was much more subdued than the resistance he’d shown his friend. But this wasn’t real.[break][break]

But it felt real. And it was just him—the crowd closing in and tunneling his vision on the angry, shrouded figure. The sound of his breathing in his ears, blood pumping. Agent Graves was momentarily forgotten beside him, as well as his pidove, who had settled on his shoulder.[break][break]

He looked down at his hands to find the sudden weight of a matching weapon. When did—? His arms yanked back, shoulders hitching to let the gun fall from his palms to clatter at his feet. He looked up, wild-eyed, but when he looked down again it was there in his hands. “Why?[break][break]

Was that aloud or in his head too?

The cloaked figure sneered as the pistol clattered on the ground at Lam's feet. "Very well. Some of you are unwilling to dirty your hands in the name of justice. That makes you all the more complicit! Seize him!"[break][break]

The crowd roared and rushed at both Lam and, by association, Gunner, their arms outstretched, fingers sharpened into bloody claws. Instinctively, Gunner shoved himself between the throng and Lam, releasing a Pokéball at the same time. His Hisuian Typhlosion appeared in a flash of light.[break][break]

"LAVA PLUME!" Gunner ordered. She obeyed at once, blasting the charging crowd with an enormous fan of fire. Horrible screams filled the air, even though the apparitions vanished, unharmed.[break][break]

A sharp BANG caused Gunner to twist toward the stairs. The cloaked figure had shot the woman. No longer did she kneel on the stone; instead, her corpse slumped forward, gushing blood from a head wound.[break][break]

Gunner swore under his breath at the grisly scene.

As soon as he dropped the weapon, it felt like the wrong choice. He looked up, face paling further as the shadowy leader called for his capture. “No, wait-” He seemed to forget that it was all smoke and mirrors as the group closed in tighter around the pair. Lam could feel his throat constrict, and his breath thin. And just like the last time he’d explored the deep sea, he locked up.[break][break]

Poppy took the initiative for Lam as well. Fluttering off of his shoulder, the little pidove mustered up all of her strength to swing the gathering energy of her DRAGON HAMMER in the opposite direction. Lashing out at the crowd where the arc of the LAVA PLUME didn’t reach.[break][break]

The deafening crack of the gunshot cut through the panic that he’d wrapped himself in–only for the feeling to intensify as he turned in tandem with Agent Graves to see the limp body. The dissipating crowd and their howls and shrieks no longer mattered. The grotesque sounds faded long in his ears long before the sound actually did. It was all covered up by the humming buzz of static in his head.[break][break]

“Oh fuck. Oh no, that–” his stomach turned over as he fixated on the sight. Lifeless eyes, the smell of gunsmoke and coppery blood. “It’s my fault.” Despite his stomach lurching and the urge to gag, Lam stumbled forward until he stood over the lifeless woman. Flanked by the protective little pidove.[break][break]

His fault. Just to keep his own hands clean. He should’ve done something differently. Been better. He wasn’t clever, or even strong enough like MATIAS SILPH to make snap actions.[break][break]

A coward.

While Gunner had seen a dead body dozens of times before, it seemed to be Lam's first time facing such a grim reality. The other man seemed overwhelmed, muttering under his breath. Gunner caught his words, barely.[break][break]

"Hey, snap out of it," he said, grasping Lam's shoulder and giving it a firm shake. "It's not real."[break][break]

As he spoke, the body began to disperse like mist on a powerful gust. The cloaked figure with the smoking gun had disappeared, replaced instead by a towering clump of swaying seaweed. The corpse at their feet was merely a growth of coral in a vaguely human shape.[break][break]

Gunner gave his Typhlosion a silent signal. She loped off to ensure no other dangers lurked in their immediate area. Then, turning to Lam, the agent asked, "Are you okay?"

The shake to his shoulder made him jump, both shoulders hiking up toward his ears as he twisted toward Gunner. “Don’t—!“ When it wasn’t more apparitions coming to tear him away, though, the flinching reaction subsided. “Oh.” His voice subdued as he tried to push his way through the residual panic to find some semblance of rationality again.[break][break]

All the while he couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d seen. He was looking at Agent Graves, but not really looking at him. His mind was distant. Distant and fixed on the image burned into his head. A woman he’d never known, but who she could shift into. The people who could easily be swapped with her to haunt him further.[break][break]

One face in particular that would crack him in two if Lam didn’t keep him safe—[break][break]

Cooing from his shoulder pulled him back into focus. Poppy had settled on his shoulder again. Her tiny beak tugged at the ends of his hair to get his attention. “Uh, yeah. Yeah.” He shook his head, slowly registering that all that remained was seaweed and wisps of pink mist. The rapid beat of his heart in his chest gradually began to slow.[break][break]

“Yeah,” he repeated, “I’m okay. Thanks for that—the help.” He sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than the other man, though. “Was that..” a memory? he didn’t finish.
