Gunner recognized dorian westcliff in an instant from the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism's file on the man known as the Mad Dog. Not only were many of his atrocities in Kanto recorded in the HBIC's database, but so were his recent acts of terror — including the attack on the Mauville City gym.[break][break]

The Vigoroth charged without warning, attacking the Lickilicky with a frenzied brutality that Gunner had only seen in the most desperate of Pokémon. Its claws cut deeply into the Normal-type's soft flesh, eliciting high-pitched cries of alarm and agony.[break][break]

"Attack!" the agent ordered the Lickilicky, unsure how well-trained she was. Thankfully, she acted quickly, retaliating with ZEN HEADBUTT.[break][break]

Satisfied that his Pokémon had a fighting chance, Gunner refocused his attention on the approaching Rocket operative. Dorian's idea of 'play' would likely result in injures if Gunner wasn't careful. He had to be careful.[break][break]

"I'm not in the mood today, Rocket."

"I don't know," Gunner said, when he saw the poor state of the Vigoroth, though his stomach churned to see just how badly wounded it was. "Your Pokémon doesn't look too hot right now."[break][break]

He didn't want to think about what had happened to it before their encounter.[break][break]

Seeing the Vigoroth flinch, Lickilicky took advantage of the opening. She lashed out with her long tongue, using POWER WHIP to slam the opposing Pokémon into the nearest stalagmite. The force was enough to crack the stone.[break][break]

Then she waddled backward, watching Dorian with beady eyes. She clutched at her wounds with her small hands and panted heavily from exertion. Gunner had to admit, her condition wasn't good, either.

Dorian's complete disregard for his Pokémon's life sickened Gunner. True, death was a fact of war, but at least the men and women with the League valued their Pokémon's lives and mourned their deaths.[break][break]

The agent took out Lickilicky's Pokéball to recall her, but she called out in defiance, shaking her head with forceful movements. Then she waddled forward to face the Incineroar that had just appeared before her.[break][break]

She probably wants to join her trainer in death, Gunner thought, bitterness filling him at the thought of similar Pokémon abandoned on the field. "Give it your all, then," he murmured at the Lickilicky.[break][break]

She launched herself at the Incineroar, attempting another POWER WHIP but unable to pull it off before the DRAIN PUNCH could connect. The Incineroar's fist smashed into her weakened body, breaking bone. Lickilicky collapsed on the cave floor, dead.[break][break]

Gunner grit his teeth. He couldn't stay there all day entertaining a madman, especially since his Pokémon still needed to recover after their trials in Ultra Deep Sea. After a moment's hesitation, he released his Salamence, Bruin.

Even the Incineroar gloated like his trainer over the corpse of the fallen Lickilicky. Beneath his mask, Gunner's lip curled into a vicious snarl of disgust. He felt no remorse as he gave his Salamence a ruinous command.[break][break]

"Queen to king two."[break][break]

Purest offense as the purest defense.[break][break]

Bruin roared, his call echoing down the nearest passages of Granite Cave. Stone cracked and splintered overhead. Stalactites fell all around as the EARTHQUAKE dislodged them from the ceiling. Dust, debris, and rock came crashing down.[break][break]

Gunner took the opportunity to flee, recalling his Pokémon and rushing down a natural corridor before the cave-in could block it off.
