Zev gritted his teeth against the pain as the Team Rocket medic disinfected the stab wound in his lower abdomen. He had just arrived on the back of his Corviknight and stumbled into the medical tent at the evac station outside Dewford Town. Pokémon ringed the area, defending it against the League's forces.[break][break]

Though Isaac Merlo had done a great job stitching together the wound, the medic wanted to ensure no complications arose from infections or worse. So Zev sat on a stool, shirtless, his torso covered with bruises and superficial cuts, while the doctor worked.[break][break]

A flash of blonde hair out of the corner of his eye drew the Beast's attention. Cillian Quinn had entered the tent, looking just as battered — if not more.[break][break]

Zev greeted the other man with a curt nod. "Gavin."[break][break]

He tried to keep the roiling anger, hurt, and bewilderment out of his expression, though an unhappy tension remained evident in the hard lines of his face.

Had it been up to him, Gavin wouldn't be here. He'd much rather lick his wounds at home, where the shame of defeat would not be known by his fellow Rockets. There was no denying his husband in the mood that Tempest Quinn had been in, however.[break][break]

Gavin limps into the medical tent, stubbornly supporting his own weight on his bad leg rather than leaning on one of his Pokémon. The HEALING WISH from Temp's poor Shaymin had given him enough stamina to struggle through his pain and weakness, and he would not show that weakness to others. Let them see their underboss injured but alive, perseverance in the face of injury.[break][break]

And injury he certainly has — not only the burn that marks his right leg, but three twin gouges left by a Roaring Moon's claws. The BREAKING SWIPE had left long gashes in his right arm, and a single slash across his face from where he'd failed to entirely block the blow. If he hadn't lifted his arm in time, the dragon might've taken his head.[break][break]

Medics rush him, but a sour glare keeps them from guiding him physically to a bed.[break][break]

"If anyone else comes in, you see to them first."[break][break]

Spoken as an order, offering no room for argument. He can see in their eyes the will to protest, but they wisely think better of it.[break][break]

With that settled, he gives a curt nod to permit them to touch him.[break][break]

"Arm first," he suggests, "it's been recently reopened."[break][break]

He doesn't add that he'd been the one to reopen it, using his own blood to break the adhesive bond of a STICKY GLOB. It's been a hell of a day.[break][break]

The sound of his name draws his attention as the medic cleans out the wound. Gavin's jaw is clenched against the pain of it, and he waits for a pause in their ministrations to return the greeting.[break][break]

"Zev." He looks displeased, Gavin notes. With a dry humour that would hopefully serve to minimize any feelings of failure for the both of them, he asks, "What are you in for?"[break][break]

As if they were in a principal's office after a schoolyard scuffle, and not a medical tent after a war.

Upon closer inspection, Gavin looked way worse than Zev. If the hitman had to guess, the underboss had been mauled and burned by a Pokémon, perhaps several, though it was difficult to tell how debilitating the injuries actually were. Zev knew enough to field dress wounds in an emergency, not ensure their healing over a long period of time.[break][break]

So he turned his scrutinizing gaze away from Gavin's injuries and met the other man's stare.[break][break]

"Stab wound in one-on-one combat," he replied as casually as possible. Unbeknownst to Gavin, Zev had spent plenty of time in the principal's office after schoolyard scuffles.[break][break]

The medic had stepped away to find a large bandage, so Zev gestured to the wound. "Shallow, though. No punctured organs."[break][break]

He nodded at Gavin's own trophies. "What happened to you?"

Gavin nods in acceptance of the explanation; it made sense. Powerful and skilled though they were, neither men were invincible. It does surprise him to hear that it had happened in one-on-one combat.

"Guessing I should see the other guy," he smirks.

He expects Zev to have murdered them, after all.
[break][break]

When the question is turned to him, Gavin nods to the gashes on his arm to which the doctor currently tends. They're deep, muscle and bone visible at their worst. Thankfully the slash across his face had been dampened by the block.

"It looked like a Salamence, sort of. Like some sort of ancient Mega Evolution."
[break][break]

In the days to come, they'll call it ROARING MOON.

"Tried to take my head off."
[break][break]

He, too, speaks far too casually of his injuries. He's less proud of the burn, though he says levelly, "Avatar. Raziel Pryde."
[break][break]

He refuses to acknowledge Raziel Beckett's preferred name. Besides, this was the name Zev would recognize as one of the main defectors on Rocket's hit list, a list passed on to the Beast as soon as he'd accepted the role.

Gavin's attempt at a joke did not land as he'd hoped. A muscle in Zev's jaw twitched, and the Beast's expression grew dark. A person such as Gavin, who'd grown to know Zev's body language, might interpret the man's not-so-subtle reaction as a 'no'.[break][break]

He listened in brooding silence as Gavin explained his own wounds, recognition entering his eyes at the mention of Raziel Beckett. The hit list remained long, much to the chagrin of Team Rocket's upper echelon.[break][break]

And as the medic returned with a large square bandage to cover Zev's sutured wound, he resolved for it to grow one name longer.[break][break]

"Did you kill him?" Zev asked Gavin of the League's Avatar, revealing none of his thoughts. Not yet.

Gavin understood body language well enough to understand a struck nerve; in a way, it only strengthened a feeling of kinship. Of relief, almost, that he was not the only one of their strongest to meet failure upon the battlefield.[break][break]

That relief sours some at the question.[break][break]

He's forced into honesty, into shaking his head.[break][break]

"I was on my way out," he starts, by way of explanation. "Lugia wasn't with me. Damn suit."[break][break]

He's still wearing it, now, inert though it was with the death of the Dhelmise it had been bonded to. Though it served to grant power to those without it, to Gavin the Sygna suit was only an inconvenience. But it had been a necessary one, to remain as long as he'd done in the Deep Sea. Too long, as it turned out.[break][break]

"Fucker killed my Dhelmise."[break][break]

He leaves out the bit about his capture. His shame.

Gavin's non-answer was enough of an answer for Zev. The Beast grunted. "A pity."[break][break]

The medic handed Zev two plastic cups: a small one carrying two pills — painkillers — and a regular-sized one half-filled with water. He accepted them with the briefest nod of gratitude.[break][break]

"Speaking of which, I need you to put Caleb's name back on the hit list." Zev's expression was like stone as he took the pills with a swallow of water. "He showed his true colors to me today."[break][break]

That was all he planned to say on the matter unless Gavin pulled rank to demand more information.

When Gavin is offered similar relief for his pain, he refuses with a shake of his head. Pain was useful. Grounding. A reminder of his own mortality, of how close his brush with it had been.[break][break]

He needed a clear head, at least until this was over.[break][break]

He's a smart man, smart enough to fit pieces together. Smart enough to know that Zev, much like Gavin himself, did not want to dwell on the issue overlong. So rather than asking for details, he simply says, "Consider it done."[break][break]

He doesn't ask if Zev is sure. He's certain that he is.

Gavin did not, in fact, ask for more information, which was precisely why Zev appreciated the other man to the extent he did. He expressed his gratitude in a brief nod of his head as he slowly stood and pulled on his shirt.[break][break]

"Thanks. I'm sure the lower ranks will see the update in no time, but I'll put the word out, too."[break][break]

Zev picked up his mask but didn't put it over his face. His exhaustion was evident in the bags under his eyes and the tight line of his mouth.[break][break]

"I'm heading home. I can't fight after losing this much blood," he admitted, the frustration seeping out with his words. "After I get some sleep, I'll submit my report. Are you staying to continue the operation into the night?"[break][break]

An underboss like Gavin could at least oversee Rocket's advance without throwing himself into the fray.
