Her brow creased somewhat into a furrowed line, her smile a remnant of a mood that seemed to have fled her. She rested her chin on her hand, saying nothing for a time, as the night stretched itself in silence.[break][break]

It shattered with a single question: "Do you 'like' fighting? Or is it a compulsion?"[break][break]

The delicate arch of her eyebrow inquired further as she stared at him, wondering. Perhaps it was easier to reply with prying in return than to answer honestly.[break][break]

"I don't know that I feel a goal in the same manner that you do."[break][break]

His was a question that Remiel Calcifet had asked her once, in the emptiness of the Rocket submarine at the midnight hour. Then, like now, she found herself at a loss. Fingers wrung themselves into the fabric of her clothing, her mouth pressing itself into a thin line.[break][break]

"All creatures eat until they find their hunger is sated."[break][break]

The knots tightened between her fingertips.[break][break]

"I'm searching for that moment, I think. When the power I have is enough to satisfy my wanting."

There was no moment of thought given to his retort, upon seeing what the result of sated hunger would be, he knew the result. Or at least, that was the belief which he held in that moment.

Still, he looked to her prior question, even as the light of the shoreline lined closer and closer, his movements, his rowing had begun to slow down as he elongated the talk.

”It’s competition. But I don’t want that to ever end, and I never want it to be clean. It’s only when we’re at our dirtiest that we can give our best. The day I’m satisfied…Is the day I’ve lost, and died.”

In a sense, it was both the answer of her question, and also the explanation to his earlier statement. It almost felt as if the answer had been read out of him, it was a difficult thing to accept, that someone else had reached this conclusion before himself.

Still, he appreciated honesty, and he adored one’s ability to dedicate themselves to a singular path, to follow along a singular line.

"Mm." Her noncommittal reply settled in the quiet, his passionate words somehow subduing hers all the more. A distance clouded her gaze as her hand unwound itself from clothing, lying flat across her lap. "You would think that, I suppose. That to feel at peace is equivalent to death."[break][break]

Did that make her own restlessness the definition of being alive? Was her own misery and dissatisfaction somehow proof of her own vitality, then? That seemed backwards, somehow. Her resentment felt counter to her joy for living, not the lifeblood of her existence.[break][break]

She agreed with him, to an extent. Being blind to the reality of the world was a death of another sort. That 'softness' held no bite; it was nothing but to be a sheep for the slaughter.[break][break]

"But I do not know that a life of constant wanting is preferable, either. It is exhausting, to... feel so much."[break][break]

Her lips fused shut before she could elaborate further. These reasons for joining Rocket had rarely made sense to outsiders. Perhaps only Cillian Quinn had understood them, in the end.

Kouji stayed silent for a moment. His rowing had come to a still as he pulled his arms into a cross; the oars threatened to slip into the sea before he caught them into a quick rush; pulling them onto his laps.

His lips were pressed tightly together, a thin line that showed his frustration with the conversation,

”Did you ever want to kill someone? And did you manage to reach that goal? I’ve reached my first goal, and broke the man I wanted to break.” He said as he ran a hand through his hair, before he gripped it tightly, to the point it hurt, to the point his hair started to tear. His eyes were fixed onto his forearm, his teeth were gritted tightly.

”But, that’s the thing that keeps you alive. If you let that fade, that hate, it’s all gone. If you have that person die…I think you’ll really be free. A hate that can never fade.” He caught himself, he stopped the grip, stopped his heavy breathing, stopped it all for a moment before he gripped the oars again.

”Sorry, yeah. I’m just an idiot, so I don’t really know. But, if I couldn’t feel so much, I wouldn’t know what to do with everything.”

"How did it feel for you, when he died?" she asked suddenly, turning to glance over her shoulder at him. When she looked at him, she saw another man's face. It stared back at her blankly, sallow and rotted with disease that had been rendered at her own hands. "The man you wanted to break."[break][break]

Despite herself, the composure faltered, ever so slightly. Anger leaked into her words, indignation tinged with regret. She'd not expected to say this much, to stumble into this line of thinking as the evening lengthened and her self-restraint waned.[break][break]

"It was an ending that became its own beginning, for me. Nothing was enough. It's a fire that burns, but has nothing left to satisfy it. So it just burns, and burns, and burns."[break][break]

Until it burned her down with it. Maybe it'd never stop grinding her down into ash.

It sounded deranged, not the kind of thing one should have ever tell to another. For the man who had forged his entire life in order to make him into a weapon…Then had regretted it once he could only live as one. Yet his siblings had lived normal lives, had run, and become normal…

Just the idea of it was enough to drive him into a rage, the lifeblood that kept his heart pumping, and yet without that, he’d just be an automaton that existed for an organization that he’d only been a part of for a month, a little over at best.

”Burn everything. Me, you, everyone else. Just keep doing it, until nothing’s left. What else is the point of fire? If you’ve got no more water to boil, no more flesh to crisp, no more meat to cook…”

”Then you just burn what was never supposed to be burned. I’d hate for ya to die just after we started getting along so well.” And that was the moment he started putting his all into rowing.

"And when it's all burned down, then what?" she asked, and a wry smile creased her lips. The lights became brighter, inviting in their warmth. Headlights of a lighthouse scoured the sea, resting on them like a halo of golden-white.[break][break]

Her blonde hair seemed to shine with lustre beneath its illumination; she seemed so much smaller and less threatening in the unforgiving light than when shrouded in the shadows.[break][break]

Subconsciously, she shrank away from it, finding the cool darkness of night preferable to her tired eyes.[break][break]

"When we are done with our destroying, when we are dead, what's left as our legacy other than ruination?"[break][break]

She didn't expect an answer. There wasn't one either of them could give.
