They’re miles away from Dewford. Miles away from civilization. Through dark paths, along highways barely travelled by outsiders, the two ride. Whales sing their strange siren-calls in places not meant for humanity. Their hum is music sweeter than any instrument. Through the darkness they travel, their destination not far away now.[break][break]

“We’re stopping here.” Navy says as he pulls the truck off. They’re at a scenic overlook. Below them is the first point where explorers landed when they arrived at the settlement that would one day become Dewford Town. Down the beach, the meeting is about to commence. One of the people that will be there is the one who murdered Jay Hern.[break][break]

Scum dealing Nihilego neurotoxin on the black market. People profiting off of the strange occurrences enveloping this sleepy, hip town. Men who will face justice – not because Hoenn’s laws demand it of Michael Navidson and his ward, but because it is right. Someone died for this. He, too, was selling the angel’s tears, but he did not deserve to die.[break][break]

“I don’t have a flier, so here’s my plan: we’ll hit ‘em hard from above and below. You fly in on your Noivern. I’ll ride up on Voyager. We’ll try and subdue ‘em before they can get any Pokemon out. We bag ‘em and let the PD sort ‘em out, like I told you earlier.”[break][break]

There’s a pregnant pause. Navy breathes in the sea air and takes a drink of water. There’s still a little time to talk.[break][break]

“We’re the only people on this island who can take them. None of these hipsters know the first thing about Pokemon battling.”

It'll rain soon, and on this deserted beach all signs of this secret meeting will be washed away by morning. If you do nothing now, they'll disappear again. All without another lead, because of course the one lead you've got comes from a man who's now dead.[break][break]

You gently stroke your fingers along Tsutsuji's back. Her muscles ripple, her entire body made for the act of flying and nothing else, perfectly sculpted for the act. Even in these winds, she's perfectly silent in the dark. They'll get the drop on whoever they want. [break][break]

"Another plan to take advantage of your brute force, huh...?"[break][break]

He's not subtle. [break][break]

He's the opposite of that, crashing so loudly and so quickly that he overwhelms. It's a wonder that he's taken this field of detective work and turned it into a series of violent clashes, but somehow it works. People don't expect brutality from someone who's meant to be so understated. When they underestimate him, that's their downfall.[break][break]

It's hard to call it detective work, but you still admire it. Just as you admire the dangerous dragon beside you, so hard to control. She holds undying loyalty to you because she loves you, and that alone spares you her wrath. It makes her one of your most valuable allies.[break][break]

"I turned over a new leaf, Navy. I thought I told you that."[break][break]

You say it as if to protest and yet you climb atop Tsutsuji anyway. It's not a refusal. It's simply another barb from a rose so sweet.[break][break]

She takes to the air with one tremendous flap of her wings. Feeling the black sky rush under you, lifting you into the air, you hold tight to her. Up here in the heavens a black flower blends into a black sky, and you feel as invisible as you've always been. It's your strength now to disappear, unnoticed until the moment to strike, like an arbok in the dark.[break][break]

"Now!"[break][break]

With a hiss, lost on the wind, Tsutsuji brings you close enough that the capsule that slips from your hand can reach the figures on the beach. Sumire emerges bathed in light, evil eyes that ensnare the soul with fear, while Tsutsuji deploys a frequency that makes them feel ill. [break][break]

You strike, a sudden move laced with all your corrosive malice. [break][break]

You'll melt them down. You'll melt them down to nothing.[break][break]

“You can be a good person and fight when you have to, Tsubaki.” He’s not chiding her. They’re words of hard-won wisdom. Years on the streets led him to that conclusion.[break][break]
“It’s not about justice or any of that bullshit League propaganda will tell you. It’s not even about doing the right thing. Sometimes, a guy just needs to get his ass kicked.” Speaking the words like they are absolute truth, he mounts Voyager. Under him, the great red-black dog yawns. It’s past his bedtime.[break][break]
Urging him forward, Voyager surges. Navy rides the storm. Josh was the first to teach him just how fast an Arcanine can go when it means business. Rushing over dunes, down the beach, Navy feels like a blur. He holds on for dear life. He loves speed. Navy loves this feeling the way Tsubaki loves her angels. Wind whipping through his hair, the feeling that he’s truly going somewhere.[break][break]
He loves this feeling.[break][break]
Ahead, like dim-lit shadows against a darker ocean, he sees the perps. They meet in trucks, they meet on the backs of Pokemon. The first guy doesn’t know what hits him. Voyager slams him into a car with such force that he sets off the car alarm. Men scream and turn. Some draw guns. Fire spews from the dog’s mouth like he is some ancient dragon.[break][break]
While they focus on Navy and Voyager, another creature slips free. Kai’s blue fur blends into the background. An aura blast sends another car flying. It’s destruction. Chaos reigns over this beach. Desperate men take to the air, where they are met by one truly blessed by their angels.

It makes you sick to look upon them now, such a sad showing of what was once the most beautiful song in the world, a song that rings in your ears even now while their misguided affection can no longer affect you, while their kisses can no longer reach you. [break][break]

Those that would take hold of that hollow love and seek anything from it could never understand it from the very beginning, a distorted kind of love that would melt you down, join you to them so that you will lie eternal among them in the deep, receive their worship as the catalyst of their love, never dying but never truly alive. Graced by the lips of a thousand mouthless smiles, Hern who had seen the madness of the deep thought to own and contain that hollow love. Tsutsuji opens her gaping maw wide, flashing a series of ivory sickles. They are deceptively sharp and menacing, built only to rend the flesh of fruits. In that wicked smile, however, the terror of the night at her back, she courts the horror of her foes and delivers an explosive shockwave that knocks a Mandibuzz clear from the sky. [break][break]

Its next target, a slow-moving but steady Tropius, swings its neck like a bludgeon. Tsutsuji flaps her wings once, and air currents turn to swirling blades to shred palm leaves spread wide. Dangerous claws meant for cracking open the shells of tropical berries and clinging to tropical trees sink into skin like tree bark, designed exactly for that purpose, stripping that long neck bare.[break][break]

On the ground, Sumire is nearly invisible in the dark. As a trainer reaches for a firearm at his side, she flashes like a bullet, sinking her fangs deeply into muscle and bone. An anguished cry, and the man drops his gun. She saves the life of the man who not once but twice saved her master's, already in his debt.[break][break]

This counts as one, a debt repaid.[break][break]

They are the monsters rising from the depths. They are the ones these people fear. Somewhere along the way, they started climbing. Tsubaki sees it as sinking, Navy is sure, but it’s a climb. A climb up to the lofty heights where the elites of this place sit. These mere criminals and trainers are no match for them. Voyager scorches. The blue-furred dog strikes from the dark. Other creatures lurk in the dark.[break][break]
These men show good sense. They sit their weapons down. They put their pokeballs down. They look up and roll in terror. They tremble. Mercy, their eyes cry. Mercy. Navy, for their sins, gives it to them.[break][break]
“That’s enough. We’re done here.” Five words cut through the night. They’re still outnumbered. These men could throw out their monsters and fight them, but they do not. They submit themselves to a softer court. War is not a sport meant for men such as these.[break][break]
They are creatures meant for the world above the waves. Bystanders, pretenders. They know not what is truly beneath their feet. Few know the truth of the depths. Few ever should.[break][break]
“You’re all under arrest. Baki, call it in.” He tells her with a leader’s confidence.

Detritus is carried along a wave of violet malice, aggression honed in a war zone underneath the city. They go along with the path of least resistance because they are unlike you, not made to corrode all they touch. Mere specks, inconsequential. And yet they thought they may hold miracles in their hands, without even considering they might be stolen, all the hubris in the world, as if those miracles could never be taken from them. [break][break]

You're here to shatter every illusion they hold dear.[break][break]

You point your finger at the ringleader as if it were a gun. In practice, it might as well be. Tsutsuji chitters excitedly in the dark behind you, her gaping mouth already trained on him. The first sign of hostility is all she needs to unleash an explosion and send everyone to hell.[break][break]

"Freeze.”[break][break]

It's not a suggestion, it's a command. And they will listen.[break][break]

”One move and I blow apart everyone here, myself and the toxin included.”[break][break]

There's a smile of satisfaction with those words, completely lost to those who can't see in the dark.[break][break]

Slowly, you pull out your phone. The Rotom inside vibrates excitedly as it dials Dewford PD automatically, and you lift it up beside your face.[break][break]

”H-hey, we just wanna talk things out! This ain't what it seems!”[break][break]

One of the men starts pleading for leniency, caught up in more than he bargained for.[break][break]

The phone rings.[break][break]

”Shut up! Don't say another word or I’ll do it!”[break][break]

You snap back, urgency in your voice. You're back in Kanto again. You've gotta act tougher than anyone, cause if they find any weakness, you're done for.[break][break]

The phone rings again.[break][break]

"... Tsubaki, what's this all about, hm?”[break][break]

Another voice. [break][break]

A chill runs down your spine.[break][break]

The man at the helm of this all speaks now, straight ahead. Calm despite the circumstances, he takes a step forward.[break][break]

”Freeze!! I said freeze!!”[break][break]

Your scream cuts through the night. But there's a rising panic in your chest as you hear that man’s voice again.[break][break]

The phone rings again.[break][break]

”Please, Tsubaki, we both know you don't have the guts, hm? Come now, tell me. Why are you interrupting my deal?”[break][break]

He's completely confident despite the circumstances. He knows just how to read you like an open book. Always has. You don't know how he got twisted up in all this. But it makes all the sense in the world.[break][break]

Your mind races, looking for an out.[break][break]

”Why…? Why are you here?”[break][break]

A click. [break][break]

There's a voice on the line.[break][break]

”Dewford Police Department, how may I be of service today?”[break][break]

Another click. [break][break]

Beep beep beep beep.[break][break]

”I thought you were retired.”[break][break]

”Really, now, Tsubaki? I thought you were dead.”[break][break]

He laughs. [break][break]

Cold and hollow, fake as can be. Even if on the surface it has everything a genuine laugh might, all the proper ingredients, it's simply lacking something. [break][break]

It's put together wrong, just like he was.[break][break]

“Let me explain what’s gonna happen.” A decisive voice cuts through the stand-off. Almost every head in the group turns to look at Navy, standing tall. Headlights cast shadows over the hard lines of his chin and cheekbones. Deep-set eyes dance in the light. He looks at them all. In his hand is a pokeball.[break][break]

“I don’t give a shit about her past. If you’re not careful, I won’t give a shit about your future.” He doesn’t normally permit himself to talk this way in front of her. His voice is hard as stone carved from the sands beneath their feet – a fury only matched by the temperamental god of the sea behind them.[break][break]

“You’re some kinda Rocket, huh? Well then, you should know about him.” A shark’s grin. A daring smile, asking if the man wants to gamble his life.[break][break]

“My black dragon. He’s eaten you Rockets before. Slurped you down to the marrows of your bones. And y’know what? He’s a’hungry. You don’t come along quietly…”[break][break]

He holds the ball up, lets its black and yellow contours shine in the light. They can all see the head of a roaring dragon stamped onto the ball. Anyone with intel knows what’s inside that ball…[break][break]

Or at least what he wants them to think is inside there. The truth is that there are two balls that look like that in Navy’s collection. One is Vortigern, great wyrm, ace of his team. The other is Nameless. A Ditto found in an excursion with Elise Calcifet. Inside its ball, the formless failed copy of a legend senses his intent and prepares to morph into the form of the dragon.[break][break]

“…he comes out. Maybe he’s overwhelmed. Maybe he’s tired. Or maybe all of you will be his next meal. So, here’s my question for you.” He meets the eyes of the old Rocket as he presses the center button on the ball. It expands, ready to be thrown.[break][break]

“You feeling lucky, punk?”

The keg explodes. A noxious odor fills the air. Navy’s body acts before his brain can think. He rushes at Tsubaki and tackles her, full tilt, back away from this mess. They’re pressed together, Voyager and Kai following suit. He’s warm, contrasting with how cool the spring night is right there at the beach. At first, it’s a stunt steeped in pointless masculine bravado.[break][break]
Then, the screaming starts. Torment. Agony. Venom has been doused on their skin, into their bloodstream in open wounds, through heat and fire. Evening returns to day in this blaze. Men are crying. There’s anguish. In the distance, sirens are blaring. Out here in the boonies, PD will respond in a timely manner.[break][break]
“I’ve got you, Baki.” He reassures her as men cry. They’re dying. Horrors are blossoming within their body. Poison taking them, forcing jagged spikes of agony through their body. Barnacles growing. This is it, alright. The source of everything. The murderer they’re looking for, the boogeyman.[break][break]
“Get him,” Navy says to his Pokemon, who have stayed close, “GET HIM! We can’t let that guy get away!”[break][break]

They are wreathed in all-encompassing love. And they are dancing. Smiles without mouths, words without lungs. They giggle, and they pirouette, and they swirl in ethereal brilliance beneath a ripple of thunder. [break][break]

You feel his embrace. [break][break]

Strong, powerful, and so very warm. He pushes you to the ground and rips your eyes away from the light of those flames. You can see them still dancing on the back of your eyelids, still seared into your flesh, inescapable. They torture you in their incomprehensible tongue, whispering words that only you can hear. [break][break]

And yet, though they may have stolen you, may have stolen your mind, your heart races in the embrace of someone else.[break][break]

"I've got you, Baki."[break][break]

Your venom is soaked all the way through now. [break][break]

A burning sensation that covers your entire body as if you were doused in acid. A mind that's corroded all the way through. The tears of the angels have not graced you, so then why do you feel this pang in your heart? More intensely every time he throws himself in harm's way for your sake, your body feels like it's set aflame anew with every heartbeat in your ears. [break][break]

This pain, this ecstasy, could only be something felt in the proximity of angels.[break][break]

He shoves himself between you and everything that could harm you - your past and your future - and you can't help but relish in that. He gives his everything to you, including his life. You dig your nails into him, pull him closer, as if to savor that monopoly a little longer. Forget the world.[break][break]

The world means nothing without him in it, and though he's screaming in your ear, you can feel the red creeping along his back. You have so little time to savor this.[break][break]

"Navy. Navy."[break][break]

You try to stop him from talking, from moving, though he's frantically trying to capture the man who's bested him. He's a wild beast thrashing around, forgetting himself for the sake of catching his prey.[break][break]

"Navy, please, listen..."[break][break]

You try to reason with him, try to calm him. But in all this chaos, a mist hanging over you in which the angels dance even now, you can't get through. [break][break]

"Hey! Navy, c'mon!"[break][break]

You'll be trapped there while the mist disperses, unable to move, unable to treat him.[break][break]

"Navy! NAVY!! Shut the FUCK up!"[break][break]

You shove your fingers all the way down his throat mid-sentence as he's still calling orders to his Pokemon. He wants his prey so desperately, this wild hound, but you can't let him kill himself for the sake of a job so soon. [break][break]

You need him around.[break][break]

"That's it. That's it, just swallow it... shhh...."[break][break]

The pill's fast-acting, a paralysis agent that slows metabolism. It'll stop him from lashing around, or trying to run after anyone in the dark. It'll slow his heart, stop him from bleeding out. And if he breathes just a few drops of those aerosolized tears he might be gone for good. This'll help his body resist them, too. [break][break]

It's a parasitic venom that uses the body's own natural pathways to function, but it can't survive outside the body. It needs to be taken in rapidly. The metabolism of someone who could easily be mistaken for dead just won't do. It's like poorly prepared fugu fish, the origin of those zombie movies he's such a fan of.[break][break]

So, just relax in her arms, Michael Navidson. Wait for death to pass you by, so the angels won't visit you as well. [break][break]

She's been touched by them before, after all. She'll be fine.[break][break]

"Navy, sorry. I'll ask for your forgiveness later."[break][break]
