Something feels off about the village. There's a sickly smell in the air, and the quiet is one of absence rather than calm.[break][break]

"Does it look safe to you?" Yumi Hasegawa asks.[break][break]

"No," Cillian answers, at the same that Tempest Quinn barges ahead and opens one of the doors.[break][break]

Any irritation he might've felt for his husband's rash decision is immediately dwarfed by alarm as something wraps around his husband's waist and yanks him inside. Cillian is rushing forward before he's really processed it, and his emotional response leaves him just as vulnerable. A vine snakes around his injured leg and drags him to the ground, the impact knocking the wind out of him. He barely manages to catch himself on the door frame before the Victreebel can drag him toward its hungry mouth, but splinters dig against his hands and sweat compromises his grip.[break][break]

It's a good thing Hitoshi Inoue is there; the blade's blade cuts clean through the offending vine, and Cillian scrabbles back with wheezing breaths.[break][break]

Faolan, his Lucario, pulls him roughly back to his feet. A boom of THUNDER draws attention to Lugia as the leviathan's lightning slams down through the roof of the house, putting an end to the Victreebel that had wronged him. The gales summoned by her wings rattle windows and doors, tearing weaker structures asunder as she makes her pass over the village.[break][break]

"Temp!" Cillian calls, sharp. "You good?"

Before Yumi could even open her mouth again to speak, Temp rushed toward the nearest house and opened the door. Vines wrapped around his waist and yanked him inside. Alarmed, she shouted some choice expletives, but Hitoshi and Cillian were faster.[break][break]

Between the two of them, the Pokémon within — Victreebel, based on the bodies littering the floor — were decimated.[break][break]

Not willing to be seen as useless, Yumi released her Hatterene and approached Temp. "Here, some healing, just in case," she told him as Shinju used LIFE DEW on the reckless man.[break][break]

Then she peered through the doorway, dark eyes taking in the carnage. "Was that all of them?"

Temp falls to the ground. He grumbles, his ass smarting. But between Lugia, Cillian Quinn, and Hitoshi Inoue the group of murderous grass types seems to be taken care of. Temp accepts the healing and hand offered by Yumi Hasegawa, pulling himself back to his feet and checking over himself.[break][break]

"These things are fucking mutated." He kicks at one of the pieces of a Victreebel by his foot. "What the hell happened to them?" Starvation could and would turn Victreebel, and occasionally Weepinbel, into human eaters. That had been clear from the surroundings to have happened in this village. But the ones tho did that didn't get this large. What was happening out here?[break][break]

The floor creaks. A sharp hissing as vines go for Yumi. A smaller Victrebell, cut but not dead, drags itself down the hall. Trying to consume the woman in some fever pitch.[break][break]

Hate and anger floods Temp.[break][break]

Reckless again, he steps between them. Digs his hands into the cut before it could strike and rips it in two with his bare hands.[break][break]

Temp pants.[break][break]

"That was all of them. We should get out of here."

”I don’t see any more, Brownie.” He says to the brown-haired man. He tries to sound enigmatic, but his innate enthusiasm makes the words sound like they’re on the tail end of an adrenaline high. Munenori looks first to him and then to the circling monster above. Even if Hitoshi doesn’t appreciate that creature’s status as one of the gods of their world, the Gallade does.[break]
His conduct does, however, beg a question. A man soaked in the blood of Pokemon he himself ordered the death of looks perplexed at the anger. Cocking his head, he asks a strange question.[break]
"Why're you doin' that?" He asks as the Pokemon is ripped apart with needless inefficiency. There's something more important to worry about, so he lets the matter drop.[break]
“Yumi, Blondie, you two alright?” Concern leaks in as he sees they are, in fact, alright. Looking around, he supposes that it’s mission accomplished. They can come back later with some supplies, set up base, have themselves a merry little picnic or something.[break]
Truth be told, he doesn’t know why they’re here. He doesn’t know the season or even the reason he’s standing here holding his blade. Yumi and the man above him say cut, he cuts. Simple as.[break]
If they wish to depart, he departs. Not another thought is spared for the oversized Pokemon. He doesn’t fixate on the loss of life, or how easily any of them could be cut down at a moment’s notice. It’s just, as he likes to say, one of those things.[break][break][break]

As adrenaline starts to fade, Cillian is horribly conscious of the agony in his arm and leg. The still-healing injuries were not meant to be tested by getting thrown around like a ragdoll by some stupid mutant plants.[break][break]

Yet though his golden eyes are glazed, he refuses to show weakness.[break][break]

Yumi Hasegawa heals Temp before Cillian can get a chance to, and the underboss shoots her a quick look of thanks.[break][break]

I'm glad you're OK, says the look he gives to Tempest Quinn; he won't fawn over the man, not on the job. Here, he was an underboss. Only briefly, at the threat of losing him, had he been a husband first. That's harder to abide by when his lover rips a Victreebel apart with his bare hands in the most impressive display of his strength Cillian's ever seen, but he still manages to maintain his composure even if his skin flushes hot at the sight.[break][break]

Hitoshi Inoue speaks, and Cillian's sharp stare shifts.[break][break]

"Fine," he affirms, nodding.[break][break]

His arm throbs. He's favouring his right leg.[break][break]

He's not fine at all, and yet he is, because he has to be.[break][break]

"We retreat." He even makes it sound tactical, adding, "Next time, we'll know what we're up against and can prepare accordingly. It's enough to have marked this location for now."[break][break]

In truth, he just wants to get off his damn leg.[break][break]

Despite the blood and gore on Hitoshi, his high spirits told Yumi that he was fine, too. She turned her attention to Cillian and silently directed her Hatterene to him with a gesture. Another LIFE DEW washed over the underboss and seeped into his wounds, his aching limbs.[break][break]

Noise from Temp's outrage drew Yumi's attention. Men's displays of aggression were nothing new to her, so while Hitoshi voiced his question, she merely stepped out of the house and its cloud of noxious smells. Once outside, she took a deep breath of fresh air, relieved.[break][break]

The men filed out of the house upon Cillian's command, and she joined them, her Pokémon flanking her. But before they had departed from the village, she cast one last look at the houses.[break][break]

Who had built them? And how come, though they looked made for human settlement, the inside had been empty — devoid of all the small details suggesting previous habitation?[break][break]
