A lot of things undeniably went wrong for you in the Ultra Deep Sea, and arguably, most of those were your fault. Picking a fight with a Tyranitar in an enclosed space? Trying to hit a jumping knee strike on that charging Lycanroc? Cluelessly wandering straight into the den of that monstrous insect? None of it was particularly wise. In hindsight, you can confidently say most of it was pretty fucking stupid.

To that end, you've really reaped what you've sown, because you've spent the past three days stuck in the infirmary licking your wounds. That was all well and good at first, but they cut you off painkillers after the first few hours, and now, you're just left to stew in the pain and the regret while waiting for your flesh to knit itself back together. Seems like you're not important enough to get any special treatment. What, couldn't they spare a Heal Pulse or two to help mend your broken body? Bastards.

Still, it could be worse, right? It's nice to sleep in a bed for once, and now that the initial rush of injuries has been dealt with, things are quiet around here, too. You've actually managed to get your six hours for two nights running. Surprisingly, the food isn't that bad, either. All things considered, you've got a pretty good deal here. It's like your set up in a nice hotel, and you don't even have to pay for it.

Sure, you're a shit trainer, and sure, you're still in a lot of pain, but when you look at the bigger picture, maybe things aren't so bad...?

Fuck, what was his name again? K-something, right? Koga? No, you think there might have been a "u" in it somewhere. Kouga? Hm. Closer, but it still isn't clicking. Ah, fuck it. What does it matter? It's a conversation between someone who's black and blue and someone who is vantablack and cerulean. Your ribcage is in shambles, and his probably isn't fairing much better. The pleasantries can go fuck themselves.

"Not the first time I've heard that." You admit, pulling yourself up to a sitting position, before shifting to face your fellow survivor. "Course, the last time I'd heard it was from a chick who snatched my car the morning after. Didn't go well. Caused a lot of problems for the both of us. She's in prison now, and needless to say, I can't go back to Driftveil for a hot minute. But, I think that's another story for another time."

Idly, you reach over to your bedside table and grab your signature sunglasses, returning them to their rightful place upon your face. Then, with a little more exertion that you'd like, you stand up, staggering over to the foot of Kouji's bed as you stretch your legs.

"Guess the point is, if I look like shit, you probably look like the ten car pile-up. The hell happened to you?"

Seriously, did he? Did this idiot suffer a major concussion and get a crippling case of amnesia when you weren't paying attention? Because honestly, you wouldn't put it past him. He has about as much survival instinct as the chick from Driftveil did... God, you miss her, for definitely wholesome reasons that you absolutely can't think about right now. Not in front of this stupid child who may or may not be suffering from major brain damage.

"If you jump into the deep end, you'll never learn to swim. You need to start small. Start by punching Caterpie and kicking Wurmple, and work your way up."

You let out a long, weary sigh. Where the hell did they find the kid? Are they really just letting any old high school dropout sign up to join Team Rocket? You hate it. You don't like being the smart one in this duo. This kid needs to go to school, learn his times tables, and come back when his IQ is a little higher, because you don't want to tolerate this responsibility.

"...Hang on, why am I even telling you this? This is my insect." The realisation dawns on you at the same time as the words leave your mouth, and quickly you pull the Pokeball back to your chest. "If you lay a finger on him, then I'll jump your ass, too. You can't win that two-on-one, no matter how many Weedle you whack, bud. Trust me, I've beaten smarter children than you."

Granted, that's not a high bar, but it gets the point across. After all, he's even talking to himself. Is he hearing voices in his head? Man, those concussions must have him horrendous, because if you start hearing voices, then it's completely and irreversibly over for you.

Do you hate yourself? What kind of question is that? You're forty years old and you've got the top three buttons of your shirt undone, of course you hate yourself! That's so obvious, it shouldn't even need to be asked.

"Look, if you want to schedule a fight, I'd be more than happy to." You stifle a yawn as you stretch your arms, glancing between Kouji, the clock, and the door to the infirmary. As fun as this has been (it hasn't been very fun), you should probably think about shaking off the rust and returning to being a functioning member of this crime society. "But you'll have to book from three to five in the PM, and I won't do weekends. First one is on the house, but every booking past the first costs extra."

With that, you return the Pokeball to your belt as you take a step back. Maybe if you get back to the grind sooner rather than later, you can scam a full paycheck out of all this bedrest. So, time to skedaddle to the warehouses and pretend you've been lifting boxes for the past two weeks.

"Until then." You wave, before heading towards the door. "Don't... Well, fuck man, I don't know. Don't die, I guess? See ya."
