“Ouch! Hey, lighten up,” Eva frowns, rolling her shoulder back a few times while the Machamp takes another few steps back. The duo found themselves a nice little field, open and warm beneath the afternoon sun. They seem to training for something. The Machamp lunges and the Professor doesn't attempt to dodge. Instead, she leans forward, arms extended and moving with a practiced grace.

Eva’s arms weep across her body, eyes flashing gold as a strong surge of wind passes in front of her. The timing is off, and the Machamp’s gentle DUAL CHOP crosses the threshold of no return and strikes the professor’s shoulder then stomach. She buckles beneath the blow, grunting loudly and holding up a hand to ask the Machamp to stop. Syah obliges, leaning over with a worried gaze, “Gimme like . . . 5 minutes,” Eva crouches down and sinks into the lush grass, lying on her back, closing her eyes, and breathing deeply to replenish the breath lost after that last blow.

Gunner saw the two figures in the little field before he could hear or identify them. As he drew nearer, he saw them for who they were: Eva Morales and one of her Pokémon.[break][break]

"I wonder what she's doing out there?" he asked his Urshifu, Madoc. The bear grunted and shrugged.[break][break]

Eva's Pokémon lunged at her, prompting Gunner to shout in alarm. But then the air warped around the woman like a summoned wind. However, whatever it was did not stop the DUAL CHOP from landing.[break][break]

Gunner started across the field toward Eva as she lay down to catch her breath. "Are you okay, Dr. Morales? What are you doing here?" he asked when he was within earshot.

Gunner’s was a familiar voice, but not familiar enough to immediately recognize it. Curiosity forced her up to her elbows to find the source. A half smile indicated familiarity, “Oh, hey, Gunner!” she seemed a little short of breath, her words punctuated by the quick need for another inhale, “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine!” she just now realized how alarming it could be to see her struck by a pokemon and then lying on the ground, “Syah’s pulling her punches, don’t worry!” well, she was supposed to be pulling her punches but the Machamp wasn’t doing a great job of that.

With a huff, she pushed herself up to a seated position. She squinted against the bright afternoon sun to look up at Gunner, “Just doing some training,” she had finally gotten the ‘all clear’ from her own doctor once her wounds from Ultra Deep Sea had healed, “I’m trying to,” she took a deep breath and lifted her hands to wiggle her fingers as if they were magic, “Make a shield with my wind,” as if that would make any sense at all to someone unfamiliar with her avatarship.

Gunner was one such person unfamiliar with Eva's Avatarship. He had read the reports from the METENO 99943 incident last year, of course; as a member of HBIC, it was his duty to keep abreast of new information.[break][break]

But all he'd read was that Rayquaza, which had been under the League's protection for some time, had destroyed the meteoroid and granted the Head Professor its Avatarship afterward. The details of that bond and the powers it granted her were unknown to Gunner.[break][break]

Which is why his brow furrowed more deeply in confusion at her word choice. "A shield with your wind?" he echoed. "What does that look like?"

A vague motion signaled the Machamp to take a few lumbering steps closer. She reached out a large hand to effortlessly help Eva rise from the ground and back to her feet, “Thanks, Syah,” she softly murmured while Gunner blinked in confusion. Perhaps she was being too vague, but she honestly wasn’t quite sure herself.

“Well, I’ve only been able to do it once,” her voice trailed off with a sense of hesitation. Her gaze leaves with it, arching past Gunner and towards the clouds, “It was in the Ultra Deep Sea,” nothing more needed to be said about how violent the brief confrontation with Rocket was, “It was like an . . . Instinct,” it saved her from being snatched up by the alien Deoxys.

Her face twisted a little into a signature wrinkle of contemplation; scrunched nose and a tight frown, “I was like . . . such a powerful blast of DELTA STREAMS that it blocked the attack,” she used her hands to demonstrate in a not-so-graceful way, “It’d be nice to be able to produce it at will, you know?”

Gunner nodded slowly as Eva explained to show he was following as best he could. But a man like him, mundane in every way compared to Hoenn's Avatars, could not fully comprehend what she meant. Supernatural powers were beyond the realm of instinct for him.[break][break]

"Would it help to practice against someone a little slower and weaker than a Pokémon?" Gunner offered. "I'm trained in combat, but I'm still nothing compared to a Machamp."[break][break]

He looked up at Eva's Pokémon and offered an apologetic smile.[break][break]

"You could train with Madoc in the meantime, Syah?" he suggested to her, gesturing to his Urshifu who hung back and watched with only mild interest.

Eva’s understanding of avatars was quite above average. Her original project when she started her tenure as Head Professor was centered around avatars, their powers, and their relationships with their legendary deities. Mostly, it was how the energy impacted their physiologic and mental well-being. Sometimes she forgot not everyone was ‘on her leve’ so-to-speak - not an uncommon trait in people of her profession.

A brief glance was shared between the doctor and her Machamp then together they glanced towards the Urshifu. Syah’s most embarrassing loss was to KING WAYLAND’s Urshifu. The thought of it still sat in her belly like a poisonous ichor. Witha heavy grunt, the Machamp nodded in agreement, unwilling to pass up the opportunity to spar with an Urshifu.

“That would be great!” Eva’s smile grew to beam with a renewed enthusiasm, “She’s fine, no offense taken” she waved a hand at the Machamp slowly inching towards the Urshifu, “Alright, alright,” she reached forward to gently grab Gunner’s forearms and guide him onto the flat piece of ground they were previously sparing on.

“Just uhhh,” Eva took a deep breath, eyelids fluttering as she tapped into her PRIMAL energy. When they lifted once again, tendrils of gold flashed across her emerald irises like little bolts of lightning, “Come at me - nothing fancy,” it was hard enough to concentrate on the power to calculate for something other than a straight forward strike.

Madoc grunted back at Syah before leading the Machamp a good distance away, so they wouldn't accidentally attack their humans. And then he launched into a series of strikes.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner nodded at Eva's instructions. Nothing fancy meant a simple jab toward her head. If he pulled the punch and angled it a certain way, his fist would glance off her skull without dealing much damage. Assuming, of course, she wasn't able to deflect his blow with her power.[break][break]

"Okay. Here goes!"[break][break]

He swung his fist at Eva.

The Urshifu and Machamp’s spar faded into the background. Pokemon of their experience didn’t need coaching - just practice. Eva lined herself up with Gunner. She seemed anxious, which was the point. The shield flared to life when she and Rayquaza were faced with seemingly insurmountable circumstances, then their lives were in real danger. There’s no way she’d be able to reconstruct that, but she’d try.

“Alright,” she shook her arms out like a track star getting ready for a race. She danced lightly on her feet before taking a ready position. Deep breath. As the exhale slowly pushed past her lips, she eyelids fluttered up. Bolts of gold flashed across her emerald irises like lightning. PRIMAL ENERGY poured into her veins like adrenaline, “Ready.”

A controlled DELTA STREAM blew past her feet and followed the trajectory of her hands up. Gunner’s fist would feel the sharp tug of the forceful air pull up, perhaps even changing the course of his strike or slowing it down. Regardless, his momentum still broke through. Eva flinched to the side to avoid the strike all together.

“Ugh, I’m so close!” she stepped forward and waved her hands to encourage Gunner to take a ready position again, “Alright, one more time, one more time,” she stepped back too, “Really come at me. Make me feel like I’m gonna get knocked out. Don't feel bad if you actually do. I won’t hold it against you, alright?”

Gunner indeed felt a sudden surge of wind push against him as he threw his punch. The resistance was alarming, but he was already pivoting into the full motion of the strike.[break][break]

Thankfully, Eva flinched away as his fist rushed past her head. Gunner took a few steps back to give her space, falling back into an attack stance at the wave of her hand.[break][break]

"All right, if you insist," he said, uneasy with the thought of hitting the Head Professor. But he had to trust her. She was a leader and an Avatar, after all.[break][break]

Once again, Gunner swung at Eva. This time, he aimed a flat-palm strike straight to the center of her chest.

Gunner’s strike was much more convincing this time a around. She felt a sense of urgency swell in her gut. Eva imagined as if she could already feel the pal smack against her chest, forcing the air right out of her lungs and driving her to her knees. In a similar motion, she summoned another DELTA STREAM. This time, the current was sharp, precise, and Gunner’s palm would feel the firm wall of wind rushing upward, so strong and fast it felt like a conveyor belt grinding against his skin. If the force wasn’t enough to stop his blow, the unpleasant sensation would likely be.

A bright smile shot across her lips at the successful endeavor. However, she looked completely exhausted. She drew deep, slow breaths. The Professor braced herself at the knees, leaning over slightly to accomplish that, “Whew,” she shook her head to brush aside the stray strands of blonde falling into her eyes, “Shit, I’m outta shape,” that was her excuse for the exhaustion, not the fact that had limits. In natural Eva fashion, she’d do what she could to push past those limits.

Gunner saw the wind seconds before his hand collided with it. It manifested with a sharpness and precision that startled him, whipping before Eva to stop his palm. His hand smacked against an invisible wall, the impact rebounding through his arm and throwing him back a couple of steps.[break][break]

"That was incredible," Gunner breathed, eyes wide as he regarded Eva with awe.[break][break]

She looked completely exhausted, though, bracing herself against her knees once more. The agent wondered how much effort it took to control such powers.[break][break]

"I'm sure it will get easier with practice," Gunner said, hoping to sound encouraging. "One day you'll be able to do it without breaking a sweat, I bet." He looked over to check on his Urshifu and Eva's Machamp, who seemed to have finished their spar.[break][break]

Then an idea occurred to him.[break][break]

"You must be hungry after all that effort. Want to get some lunch?" he offered. And then he smiled, the strict professionalism from past encounters gone and replaced with something warmer.
