What spoils he happily carried home in a Lilycove museum tote do not, however, glitter and promise their weight in coin. There would be no additions to the collection of artefacts haphazardly strewn around their apartment this time.

His fridge and freezer, though? Now that would be well stocked.

Sammy is very impressed by his haul of bargain meat he’d found at the market. After putting away most of the goods, Angelo sets his sights on enjoying his prize at the beach.

Skyler wouldn’t be back for a while from a job, so he sets some aside in the fridge for her. Then he scrolls through his phone contacts, eye catching on Gunner Graves . Food always tasted better when shared with friends.

Friends, huh…?

Down on the Lilycove beach a campfire is efficiently constructed, flames crackling hungrily away at the kindling he’d arranged. Over it a mesh grill top sits, flames warming the steel in preparation for the barbeque to begin.

Watching as his Lycanroc cools her paws in the shallows, he reaches down into the cooler for a beer. Angelo had no doubt that he’d be here soon.

The text from angelo vestri could not have come at a better time. Gunner had just taken the day off from both HBIC and law firm work to unwind after such a grueling experience at the Ancient Tomb. He shot back a quick reply confirming he would meet Angelo at Lilycove, then made a short trip to the supermarket to pick up some beers and snacks.[break][break]

While Angelo provided the meat of the meal (no pun intended), Gunner brought pre-cut watermelon, ready-to-grill vegetable kabobs, and a couple bags of chips. He raised his haul in greeting to Angelo upon arrival at the beach.[break][break]

"Hey, good to see you," Gunner said, warmth suffusing his voice as he gave the other man a bro hug.[break][break]

Which was not how he would have greeted Angelo just a few days ago. At their last meeting before the battle against the Ruinous Beasts, Gunner had given Angelo a firm handshake and a polite smile. Now, however, both gestures felt too formal, too distant.[break][break]

"I brought some goodies," he said, setting up his purchases near the fire.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner's Raichu hopped over to the shallows where Angelo's Lycanroc played. The mouse squeaked a greeting and splashed her paws in the low water.

[attr="class","angelomain"]Full control over his abilities had yet to be accomplished. Even though Angelo had been working on it, blips had become more frequent since the mission at the Ancient Tomb. Sudden tugs on some invisible part of himself materialising, in one direction or another.

As if on cue, he feels it now. Angelo knows its Gunner approaching him before he’d even turned around.

“Hey, man. You too,” his mouth spreads into a smile as the agent joins him on the beach. Without thinking, he gives the younger Graves brother a one arm hug, complete with a bro smack on the back.

“Ready for a beer?”

What had been a strictly professional relationship prior, where Angelo had felt him to be too stuffy, didn’t even encroach his mind any more. Instead there’s a comfort there. A genuine happiness to see him.

“Nice, you brought watermelon. Ever tried it grilled an' on a burger? I’ve heard its actually kinda good.”

While both men hover around the campfire inspecting the goods, their pokemon greet one another. Orion bounding towards the Raichu in a spray of salt water and merry, invitational barks.

"You know it," Gunner said, accepting the cold beverage and popping open the can. He took a refreshing sip, glancing over to watch Enid splash her new playmate back before scampering off to initiate a chase.[break][break]

Turning back to the fire, Gunner resumed unpacking his purchases. Originally, he had planned to keep the watermelon sealed in its plastic container, but the thought of putting it in burgers prompted a raised eyebrow.[break][break]

"Grilled watermelon? Never heard of it. Did you bring supplies for burgers?" he asked, looking over at the cooler with the meat inside. "Or is it going to be steaks today?"[break][break]

He remembered liking Angelo's cooking, but he couldn't remember actually eating together.

[attr="class","angelomain"]Somewhere in the distance, as the beverage is popped open, Orion breaks out into a chorus of sneezes. Salt water had shot up her nose.

“And the real motivation for the invitation unveils itself,” there’s something mischievous in Angelo’s smile as he raises his can towards Gunner, initiating cheers. Dealing merriment with a side of danger. “I need a taste tester. See if its good enough for next years Steel Chef.”

(And for good company, first and foremost.)

In any other situation, perhaps the agent should be wary to witness the hint of trouble in his expression. With food, though? Gunner was in trustworthy hands.

“Its a burger day.” With a foot, Angelo nudges the cooler that he had brought with him filled with bargain meat. At its side lay a bag of deliciously discounted ingredients. “How d’you like them? Rare? Medium-rare?”

He feels like he should know Gunner’s culinary preferences and dislikes, like its lost on the tip of his tongue.

Gunner laughed as Angelo revealed his true motivation. "Aha. Well, happy to be your guinea pig, but you get to deal with my brutally honest opinion if it tastes like shit."[break][break]

He moved to the cooler and removed the lid. Sure enough, pre-shaped patties of thawing minced beef were packed in plastic amid heaps of ice cubes. He pulled two out and handed them off to Angelo.[break][break]

"Medium rare, of course," Gunner said, feeling like it should be obvious. His smile faltered.[break][break]

Why should it be obvious?[break][break]

While Angelo dealt with the meat, Gunner turned his attention to the other burger ingredients. He glanced over his shoulder to check on their Pokémon, then took another swig of beer and started unwrapping the buns.[break][break]

"So how have you been? I feel like I haven't talked to you in ages." He did not voice the but… that sat on the tip of his tongue.
