Navy likes it. He’s never been afraid to admit that. Not since the one time Gabe talked him onto a pitch for an exhibition match. Waiting on his turn at Johanna Joy’s gym on the appointed day, listening to the crowd from a waiting room, he remembers their roar on that day. Soon, if he can just get over a few more hurdles, he’ll be fighting on Hoenn’s center stage.[break][break]
Maybe, just maybe, the champion’s belt will be his. He’ll be able to face his brother’s grave once more. That’s a convenient battle standard to wave, that it’s all for someone else.[break][break]
Shuwen, great wise bear that has stayed with Navy for three months now, puts a hand on his shoulder. The bear has always had an uncanny knack for detecting the cadence of Navy’s thoughts. He says nothing, but shakes his head. His eyes say more than words ever could.[break][break]
Focus. Lopez comes later. Stay in the here and now.[break][break]
His own thoughts play out across the bear’s eyes. It’s just them today. No Vortigern. No Hattori. No Flora. Just Navy and Shuwen, two idiots who think with their fists and let history decide the rest.[break][break]
“Starting to get nerves. The match can’t start soon enough.” Shuwen nods in agreement.

Navy had every right to be feeling nerves. For the opening act was blowing up a storm regaling the audience with tales about him, exaggerated or not.

But before long Navy’s name would be called to the stage letting both bear and trainer appear before the audience in a veritable WWE-SMACKDOWN walk!

Once that came to an end. The audience’s attention would be turned to the other end of the arena from which Johanna emerged adorning her costume. She damn near jumped about as she gave the audience what they wanted, a show.

But alongside her a peculiar shadow followed. One that people hadn’t seen in the Arena before. The Marshadow seemed nervous, yet eager all painted with broad strokes on its shadowy face.

It’s showtime. Navy is no celebrity, but he has been forced to understand one aspect of celebrity culture in intimate detail: the mask. No matter the person he is on the inside, if he is to walk the path of champions, he must appear as someone the public would want as their champion. Steadying himself, he walks out. One hand sits in his pocket. A confident smile rests on his lips.[break][break]
Even if this is a 1v1, he still has a full belt of pokeballs on his hip. It’s all about appearances. Even today, while having a match for their entertainment, he has to be ready. It’s a warning to Rocket: I am always ready to fight you. Any time, anywhere.[break][break]
Shuwen, his appointed champion for the match, is at his side. Cracking his knuckles, the bear makes for an imposing entrance. He glares at the mysterious, painted Marshadow at Johanna’s side. As if to reassure him, Shuwen gives the little fellow a thumbs up. Win or lose, they’re still on the same side – allies in the defense of Hoenn.[break][break]
“Alright, Johanna. Good to be here! Looks like we’ve got quite the crowd watchin’ us today. We’d better give ‘em one helluva good match, huh?” He speaks loud and clear so the mic can pick him up. Everything for the crowd. Everything for them. Be strong so they don’t have to be. Bear the greatest burdens so the masses can soar to joyous heights. Such is the warrior’s way.

The Mic picked up Navy’s words quite easily. A bright smile announced Johanna’s agreement with the Navy, though for the audience she would respond in kind “Yeah, we better!”

And with that the Marshadow walked onto the battlefield, hands raised for a short moment, an almost theatrical display of preparedness.

But soon after it would charge off toward the Urshifu with the intention to SUCKER PUNCH the bear.

It’s a rare creature that can take Shuwen by surprise. Rarer still one who can read his intention to immediately start the fight on his terms. Shuwen utterly dwarfs this creature, standing close to triple its height. When the blow comes, he’s taken aback. Stumbling back a moment, he grabs his nose, feeling a small spurt of blood.[break][break]
And then, he attacks back.[break][break]
“ORA!” His drain punch passes right through, sending him to the other side of the creature. Neither Navy nor Shuwen have encountered this creature before. What tricks it has are unknown to them. All Navy and his bear can do is weather this storm, Shuwen turning on his heels to face his opponent once more.

The Larger they were the harder they fell. At least that was the words Marshadow lived by. Words, which it carried into this battle as it charged at the large ursine creature. It could ill afford to hold back, and so placed weight behind the sucker punch which fell upon its opponent.

Yet, as he hit, he knew to be careful. A hit could be devastating from an opponent of this size and most definitely skill.

Before Marshadow could even manage to dodge away a fist passed through him. For a moment it thought it felt pain, then realized that it had caused him naught due to his ghastly typing. A mischievous smirk appeared upon the little fighter.

Perhaps it could play a bit, if the bear did not know what type it was dealing with! At least so the ghost thought as it formed fists and sent a barrage of CLOSE COMBAT punches at the opponent.

Navy and Shuwen give their reactions to the fist phasing through. Another hit is coming. That is an inevitability of a battlefield: you’ll get hit. You’ll always get hit. It’s by weathering punches that you create opportunity.[break][break]
“Take it on the chin, we’ll power through.”[break][break]
Shuwen hardly needs to be told that, but he doesn’t mind Navy saying the words. They understand one another, they have the same ideas about how to power through. Hand still held tight into a fist, Shuwen exhales when the much smaller creature blasts him in the stomach with force no one that small should possess.[break][break]
Then, it’s his turn.[break][break]
“ORAAAAA!” His battle cry sounds eerily similar to Navy’s own voice. Water surges around his fists and legs. Rapid strikes lash out in quick succession, the bear’s limbs a blur of repetition and continuous pressure. Falling into his element, he strikes again and again.[break][break]

For a moment Johanna wondered if this was all Navy and his Urshifu had to offer. But then she noticed the water.

“Avoid that!” She commanded.

But the playful cockiness of the Marshadow caused it to act too slowly. Too confident in its phasing ability. It felt the force of the first strike, and it was painful. The second strike it managed to parry somewhat, feeling only a light brunt, but the third it managed to step out of the way.

As the third strike flew by, Marshadow rushed close. Shadowy fists became coated in an eerie green hue as Marshadow began to rain a barrage of DRAIN PUNCHes at the Urshifu.

Navy’s keen eyes notice the glowing aura around Marshadow’s fists. Shuwen, caught in the midst of battle, the man in the arena, is too busy fighting.[break][break]
“Quick! Guard!” Those two words are shouted before the brain properly processes what it’s looking at. Shuwen’s hand rushes from offense to defense, raising it in a protective aura. It’s not just a physical barrier. Shuwen glows with a blue aura. His fighting spirit made manifest, guarding him from harm.[break][break]
“Man, this little guy you’ve got here seems like a helluva fighter, Joy.” Navy smiles, his right hand falling into his pocket.[break][break]
“Shuwen and I are gonna have to turn up the heat if we wanna beat you two.”

Draining fist met with a protective barrier. But Marshadow did not flinch. Now that play time was over, it found its focus and would let nothing distract it. (At least it liked to claim)

While the fight was on-going Navy found a moment to praise Johanna’s little ghost. She couldn’t help but snicker with light reddening cheeks. It still felt weird to be praised like that.

But she had to play the role, and so she quickly chirped back “Yours is no slouch either!”

Before quickly following it with. “Don’t think we’ll just let you do that!”

And with that the Marshadow jumped into another bout of CLOSE COMBAT with the Urshifu.

“Of course you’re not.” His smirk is a warrior’s smirk. It’s mirrored on Shuwen’s normally stoic face. Both trainer and Pokemon are getting into this, having fun. Pumping his fist up in the air for the benefit of the crowd, he watches as the Marshadow unleashes an utterly relentless blow upon him.[break][break]
It’s a blow that could knock the air out of a Wailord, it’s a blow that would send every tooth in a human’s mouth flying. Shuwen takes this hit, recoils, stumbles almost back to Navy.[break][break]
“And y’know what? If we were anyone else…maybe Shuwen and me would call uncle here. Problem is…” The grin widens. His fist lowers, one finger extending. He points across to Johanna, rocking the moment for everything that it’s worth. Shuwen is bleeding from his mouth. The ghastly punches of Marshadow’s torn something inside him. Such is the consequence of a legendary clash. Navy’s not wrong – anyone else would be dead.[break][break]
“I’m just too damn dumb to quit! Shuwen! Show ‘em our hearts! We give Joy anything less than our best and we’re insulting her.” Shuwen rushes, like the pain isn’t even there. He’s burning himself to fight this battle, as every warrior must. This battle is crucial – a step on the path of champions. Johanna Joy is one of the greatest trainers Hoenn has to offer, and his aspiration is to tower above even her and her Marshadow.[break][break]
“ORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”[break]

Their voices sound uncannily similar. Shuwen kicks his leg up, aiming to toss Marshadow into the air. From there, he’ll follow with another barrage of kicks and punches. This is his own spin on the classic technique some call Aerial Ace. Navy likes to call it air juggling.

Navy’s general behavior was a hit with the crowd. The way he fought, the way he joined the battle in spirit with all his movements. The Crowd loved it, so much in face that a loud roar of approval escaped from the crowd when Navy, like the shonen protagonist in most anime, proclaimed he was simply too dumb to quit.

Johanna smiled. She appreciate the enthusiasm. There was unfortunately very far between trainers that showed this level of enthusiasm and joy. And honestly, by now Navy had convinced her of his worthiness for the badge.

But they wouldn’t simply give up now. No, this battle would take its course.

A powerful kick sent Marshdow into the air. Before it could maneuver away a barrage of Aerial Ace’s rained up from below. The Marshadow was cornered, a few hits got in, and it hurt a great deal. It would not last long like this.

But it was not about to just lay down, while in mid air it would begin to CLOSE COMBAT in retaliation aiming to slam each attack of the Urshifu’s with a powerful punch or kick of its own, hoping to match the Mythical bear in a flurry of blows.

Like taken straight out of an episode of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

“Come on, Shuweeeeeen!” Navy cries as the two legendaries unleash a volley of blows upon one another. Affixed to Navy’s wrist is a broken watch. Atop it is affixed a peculiar stone. He found it the day Shuwen struck into his life like a thunderbolt. It’s meant for him – made for him. A stone that can turn a legendary Pokemon into something truly worthy of that title. [break][break]
The stone glows. Shuwen, held aloft in mid-air opposite from Marshadow through the sheer force generated by his rapid strikes, is enveloped in light. It blinds onlookers for a moment. That moment is followed by an eerie silence.[break][break]
“ORA!”[break][break]
A blue fist slams out of the light, soaked in his own blood. Shuwen has grown taller still. He is but a shadow of the beast he becomes under the influence of dynamax energy, but he is still mighty indeed. Marshadow gives as good as he takes, but the legendary bear presses the fight. His fists flow like a furious river. Shuwen’s g-max rapid flow isn’t something any audience, here or elsewhere, gets to see every day. The fists are flying so fast against Marshadow that they may as well be invisible.[break][break]
“Just a little bit longer! It’s an endurance contest! We’re great at those!”[break][break]
“ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!”[break][break]
Pumping up the crowd, hearing Shuwen shout, soaking in the joy of it all…[break][break]

Fists flew like rapid gales strong river currents. Each fist slamming into each other releasing booms that echoed into the arena.

The Security barriers surrounding the arena shone with clearer intensity as their power level was increased the moment Shuwen began to change.

“DON’T GIVE UP SHADOW, I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!” Johanna called out her heart beating with the intensity of war drums, as she felt her heart synchronize with the little shadow. Marshadow and Johanna poured their feelings into this match.

Shadow did not relent. It felt the bond it shared with Johanna strengthen with each blow. Almost in a manner akin to something supernatural. For those whose attention hadn’t been taken by the Urshifu’s new form, they might notice temporary glimmers of green and yellow trying to paint the otherwise black shadow.

But the form didn’t quite settle, the Z-power not quite there. The G-max rapid flow did not give the energy purchase to settle, and so through an arduous battle it began to gain ground. Marshadow’s punches grew weaker until one last strike from the Urshifu sent it flying.

With the speed of a flying bullet Marshadow flew through the air dragging along with it a strong air current before it slammed into the protective barriers which began to crack and flicker as the projectile Marshadow nearly broke it.

The audience erupted into cheers and boos in equal measures. Those who loved Navy’s display showered him with praise and those who loved Johanna and her fierceness were quick to defend her standing.

Johanna was left panting, heavy intakes of air tried to fuel her body through a sudden bout of fatigue. With a shaking hand she recalled the Marshadow into its Pokéball. She made note of the cracks in the barrier and realized, she needs to find some means to make it stronger if she were going to allow challengers to use Mythical Pokemon like this.

She returned her attention to Navy, making her way to his position. She retrieved her badge case, picked one of her badges out from it, and placed the badge case back from whence it came. Before she would offer the badge to Navy with a smile on her lips and a few words.

“That was quite the battle! I hope it was as fun to you as it was for me. Here is your reward.”
