The wind was picking up at the docks of Ever Grande City, making the waved quite choppy. Snacker looked excited to bounce on them, though, the Sharpedo keeping Josh sharp by lightly flailing with him in the saddle. "We'll get going soon. Navy should be here any minute." While he would technically be doing Ranger work by investigating the cause of an increased Sharpedo presence in Hoenn's southeastern seas, the true purpose of their visit was twofold.

Eva Morales ' equipment capable of detecting Mega Stone ore struck gold again, locating a cache of Sharpedonite well beneath the surface, at the bottom of the main trench the tunnel to Sootopolis was located in. Thankfully, it was located on the south side of said trench, far away from the Rocket-controlled city. He brought his best army of water Pokémon with him, including amphibious ones, for Eva was aware that the Seafloor Cavern, despite its name, was not totally submerged on the inside. It was one of Hoenn's many natural wonders. And somewhere within was an ore from which he could commission a Mega Stone that would make the rider a force to be reckoned with at sea.

Nothing like a little excursion into the great blue sea to clear your head. Navy goes to his PC, picks out his team, teleports to the Pokemon Center closest to the rendezvous point with his Abra before replacing him with another Pokemon.[break][break]
Today’s a day for experimenting. He told Kara Li, when he briefly met the girl, that he respected her for not rushing the evolution of her Pokemon. It’s a lot to force a younger creature through a process like that. So, today, honoring her memory, he’s decided to take some of the kids out for a spin. They’ll still be supervised by Hattori and Leviathan, but they’ll have their chance to grow.[break][break]
Landing at the meeting point, he throws out his saddled Kingdra and mounts up. He’s got an oxygen tank ready and everything. They’ll have a nice, long foray into the sea floor. Navy’s always loved the sea. Living by it brings him joy. Shame that Dewford’s got all manner of problems in its ocean or it would be like a picture perfect vacation home.[break][break]
“Alright, man. You ready to go get yourself a mega stone?” He asks while a Totodile, Kizashi, sits on his shoulder. The little lizard waves at Josh merrily.

Josh, too, had donned diving equipment, including supplemental oxygen. There were many Pokémon capable of creating what was commonly known as a "Dive Bubble" around their riders, creating an air pocket that turned oxygenated water into a form that humans could breathe. Sharpedo were not one of those Pokémon. Josh pulled at Snacker's reins, the Sharpedo lightly flailing about in excitement and testing the Gym Leader's balance.

"Ready to go!" With that, Snacker submerged, swishing back and forth as he pointed his AQUA JET upward. The Sharpedo was fast. Very fast. One of Josh's swiftest water Pokémon. Finneon, Tentacool, and Alomomola frantically fled the vicious shark as he continued his rapid descent to the seafloor and beyond, into the trench at the bottom of the region's seas. Opposite the entrance to Sootopolis would be their destination: the Seafloor Cavern. Within its labyrinthine, little-documented tunnels was ore that would let him craft the Mega Stone he so desired. Little did they know the wonders of ancient Hoenn civilization that were waiting for them deep below the surface...

“Hell yah. Nothin’ like a little adventure to keep your hair from going gray.” Leviathan sighs at him. Though young, this Pokemon knows exactly what sort of man is riding him. Beneath the waves, there are few that can match the speed of this swift swimmer. The diver’s bubble forms around Navy, but he still wears the equipment as a precaution. When your life is in danger, you can never be too careful.[break][break]
Hoenn’s beautiful from down here. It’s a hidden world painted in deep blue. Occasional flocks of Tentacool and Tentacruel get too close. Leviathan sends them off with a powerful jet of water. Any who would dare to tread upon the domain of the sea king does so at their own peril. Spying the entrance to Sootopolis, which no doubt would be monitored by Rocket, Navy gets the same ideas he always does. How hard would it be to slip in? Infiltrating the city and gathering some intel would be a great step in the war…[break][break]
But alas. That’s a concern for another time. For now, he’s with Josh, hunting for treasure. Navy prays to Arceus this is as fun as it sounded when Josh pitched the idea to him.

The SWIFTLY SWIMMING Kingdra was able to keep up with Snacker, much to Josh's surprise. While Josh's Sharpedo could show the Kingdra up if both of them so desired, this wasn't a race to the bottom. He wanted to take in the beautiful sights of the world beneath Hoenn. Compared to the surface world, the landscape was alien. Beautifully so. "What a gorgeous place..." Josh gasped over comms as the two reached the main seafloor. They had to sink deeper to get to the Seafloor Cavern at the bottom of the trench, though.

The environment got so dark that Josh had to also call on his Lanturn, Illumina, to be able to see. The rugged landscape was jarring to look at; Pokémon and divers could easily cut themselves from how sharp the rocks were. "That's the tunnel," Josh pointed. Navigating its winding paths and several forks as instructed by the Science Sisters that helped him locate the Sharpedonite cache's general area, the Elite Ranger guided Navy through the charted portion of the Seafloor Cavern and part of an uncharted section. When he surfaced in the dry part of the Seafloor Cavern, he beheld a sight that blew the speed racer's mind.

"Unbelievable... This blows away even the waterway I found my Absolite in..."

There was an entire sunken temple beneath, brightly lit by bioluminescent crystals glowing various shades of blue. He withdrew both of his aquatic Pokémon and stood at the edge of the south overlook, slow to speak and mouth wide open. A central tower, spanned three stories from the top of the cavern to the bottom, seemingly built into the rock itself. Surrounding it were a myriad of passageways on all three floors, many of which were blocked by various pieces of debris that were too heavy to try to move while they were submerged.

"Pardon my Kalosian, but holy shit do we have our work cut out for us. We're gonna need to take good notes."

“Hot damn.” Navy whistles when they emerge into the sunken temple. It doesn’t take some expert on adventure games to know what they have to go down. “howard slayte, eat your heart out.” He muses, wishing that the archaeologist was here with him. Someone with Howard’s skillset would know how to properly preserve this stuff, keep it safe, put it in a museum.[break][break]
“Let’s try to preserve this, if we can. Got a friend who might wanna come back here later.” Wading onto dry land, Leviathan lounges in the shallow water. They’re surrounded by debris. If they can drain the water, they can access more of the place.[break][break]
“Let’s see what we can and can’t get to. Figure out how to lower the water” Navy tosses out Ivy, his Ivysaur. She follows along, eyes wide as saucers at the sight. She toys with a few pieces of debris that are in the water, finding them to be far too heavy for her to lift[break][break]

Josh did a short double take when he heard the archaeologist's name mentioned. "You know Howard, too? He's a bit of a nervous wreck, but he's a genuinely nice guy. Could use a little more self-confidence, too. Kind of like I needed before our battle at your Gym. I've felt a lot better since then." Little did Navy know of the plans he and the explorer had. There were all kinds of mysteries like this one waiting to be unearthed in Hoenn, and Josh's unique skill set as both a Gym Leader and a high-ranking Ranger made him a great fit for the task.

"I think we're gonna have to go underwater and figure out where we can and can't get to." Standing at the entrance's overlook, Josh sent Snacker back out and pushed off the edge, landing in the shark's saddle. Taking a deep breath, he and the shark submerged. There were more pile-ups blocking narrow passages, and most of what wasn't blocked by collapses were blocked by doors, some of which were under lock and key. The speedster would find the airtight seals impossible to breach while they were underwater, complicating reconnaissance. He pointed toward the one open passage, marked by two wooden, spire-shaped torches that were totally submerged. He also gave a pair of rolling Pincurchin a wide berth. Aquatic Pokémon that could use electric attacks were some of the most dangerous underwater threats.

Wandering a hallway that was just wide enough for the Sharpedo to swim through, the two came to another debris-blocked passage. It was seemingly a dead end... until Josh's eyes shifted upward. He pointed in that direction, a signal for Navy to follow. He held on tight as Snacker turned vertical, taking note of a large crack in the wall halfway up. The distraction proved to be too much for him to ignore, pushing down on the Sharpedo's fin to coax him into halting his ascent and leveling out. He could see a wooden chest through the cracked wall, though the crack was too small for a human to fit through. An explosive blast could widen it enough to fit through, but doing that underwater would be a tall ask.

The dark-type ascended to the top level. A small chamber awaited them, only two features inside: a door on the east side, and a wall lever with a small painting next to it. It depicted a well with water about one-third full. After Josh yanked it downward, he felt the ground shaking beneath him as the water began to drain out of the room. It was a slow process, but the once submerged chamber now only had ankle-deep water in it. "We probably need to do a thorough search," he suggested, putting his ear up to the door. "I don't hear anything beyond, but you can never be too careful."

“That crack we passed…” Navy muses as he listens to the singsong noise of the water draining. “That bad boy’s just begging to be opened up. Somethin’ good is on the other side. Leave this part to me. Arceus knows whatever’s gonna be there isn’t gonna be friendly.[break][break]
Nobody likes backtracking. Here, it’s necessary. They make their way back to the crack. Out come three Pokemon. Genbu, Ivy, Kizashi. Babies. Rookies on the team. They have to be trained up somehow. Looking over them, he takes on the poise of a battle commander.[break][break]
“Alright, team.” Navy begins. “On the other side of that wall’s gonna be somethin’ mean. Joshy-boy’s the explorer. We’re the fighters. We draw the attention. He sees what’s inside. Right? Right. Ivy. Hold ‘em down. Kizashi, Genbu. You two do your thing. Chomp, squirt, whatever’s best. Don’t be afraid to get tricky, Ivy.”[break][break]
“Ivy!” She says her own name.[break][break]
“Open ‘er up, Genbu.” Navy says with swagger, fingers looped around his belt. Lowering his head, Genbu exhales. He rushes forward. His skull bash destroys the wall. Caught on the other side…[break][break]
“Omanyte?” Navy asks, aghast. “Living Omanyte? How’d those guys get down here?’ A good question, for another time. Instead, Ivy gets to work. The Pokemon are caught out in a moment of confusion. The moment passes. By the time they regain their senses, Ivy has wrapped three of them in her grasp.[break][break]
Aqua Tail and Ice Fang put an end to them. Young as these three are, they’re coming together nicely.[break][break]
“There’s more where they came from.” Navy grins as more crawl up, led by an evolved specimen. “You go ‘round, Josh. I got this. Unless you want in on the fun.”

Once the water had been lowered to the bottom floor's surface, Josh listened to Navy's plan of attack and nodded in agreement. "Divide and conquer. Sounds good." He withdrew the now-flailing Sharpedo for Resheph, his Dragonair, and one of the only Pokémon he carried that could move out of water easily. After Genbu opened up the weak wall with a SKULL BASH and served as a distraction, Josh procured a hidden SMALL KEY from the back. "I've seen all kinds of locked gates around here already," he remarked after the battle was over. "We'll need to use these carefully; go where we can first before using any of them, if at all possible." The intricate, confusing layout would make that difficult to manage, though.

Floating up to the top level with Resheph, Josh would be greeted with a wave of beached Pincurchin that were more than capable of crawling over land by rolling their quilled, electric bodies. Electricity would be dangerous in the damp environment, making it difficult for him to get close enough for the dragon's powerful DRAGON RUSH to fell them. Instead, the rider started kiting them around, trying to get them all in close enough proximity for a powerful ranged attack to bring them all down. Two of the four spread in different directions, one coming close enough to ZING ZAP the two. While Resheph's scales somewhat protected her against the electric crash, Josh wasn't so lucky, his body falling limp in the cocoon.

Seeing little recourse, Resheph brought out the big guns. Her rider's body sharply recoiled from the force of a HYPER BEAM discharge, roasting the electric-types. As if on cue, several bricks in the east wall receded, revealing another hidden SMALL KEY and a raggedy-looking DUNGEON MAP.

It took an unusual amount of time for Josh to return to Navy's side, but he eventually did, looking quite a bit worse for wear. Even Resheph seemed to be sweating, though he could likely tell what happened from the distinct sound of the HYPER BEAM being fired. "Watch out for... electric Pokémon... too..." Josh reported, still catching his breath from the shock that only being used to electric-type Pokémon let him recover from without serious consequence.

“You alright, man?” The question is posed with concern and a raised eyebrow when Josh returns. “Wish I’d brought Flora along. She could heal our Pokemon right up.” He chuckles, remembering her performance at the tomb. Once they all stumbled away from their predicament, the Blissey had nearly choked Navy to death for putting himself in so much danger.[break][break]
“Guess you’ll be fine.” Navy ruminates while taking the map from Josh and giving it a look-over. There are deeper mysteries here that he wants to explore one day. Who built this place? Why? Was it made in veneration of some ancient sea god like Kyogre or Lugia? Questions upon questions. At least they’ll all be rich if this turns out well.[break][break]
“Alright, I think we should start from the top down.” A call is made with a general’s decisive voice. He points to the lone room off to the left, still submerged. “We check to see if you need a key for that one. If we don’t, we see what’s inside. From there, we rotate clockwise ‘round the room until we find one we can get into without a key. If we can’t, we float down to the second floor and do the same. We’ll find one eventually.”[break][break]
Navy approaches this adventure like a military exercise, a challenge to be overcome. Sure, the romance of adventure is lost on him, but he’d trade romance to keep Josh alive. Standing up from where he was kneeling to get a better look, Navy recalls Genbu and Ivy. Readying himself to float up and get to work, he smiles at Josh.[break][break]
“Ready when you are.”

"I... should be okay," Josh shakily replied, managing a strange smile at the mention of Navy's lack of Pokémon with healing moves. "I really should have brought a Pokémon like that myself. Janus knew how to use one... until that damn medicine took away his ability to use Wish," he grumbled. As powerful of an ally as Aleph was, it was far from upending the lives of not one, not two, but eighteen of his Pokémon to create the Type: Null.

"Top down?" Josh asked. "You mean bottom up. With all the water drained, I doubt we're getting anywhere near the upper levels until we find a way to raise it again. You'd need a Pokémon that can hover if you wanted to fly in here. I have Resheph, but I don't have a second one." Isaac Merlo was a little guy, which was part of the reason they could both fit in Resheph's saddle. Navy was a big guy, and might even weigh the Dragonair down too much to soar with them both atop her. "Sounds systematic enough to me, though. Let's do it."

At the end of the south branch was a suspicious dead-end. While there was little Resheph could do about it, a quick ROCK SMASH from Torvie struck the weak floor there with the force of a bomb, a submerged secret passage theirs for exploring. Beyond was a cache of blue and black, marble-sized ore. "This... this is Sharpedonite ore," he gasped. "So much of it, too."

Curiosity getting the best of him, Josh released Snacker from his Poké Ball and ordered him to hold a piece of the ore between his teeth briefly. After the shark had done as asked, the Mauville Leader raised his index and middle fingers over the Key Stone of his Mega Glove. The light of Mega Evolution, though, did not gleam. "Navy, this is just like with Isaac Merlo and with Matt Vice when they helped me get my new Absolite. It's inert. There's gotta be a way to make this ore a Mega Stone again, and the secret's somewhere in here. Let's keep looking." The north end of the first floor, likewise, proved to be fruitless; an incredibly powerful water current kept even Josh's super speedy water Pokémon from advancing.

Clearing out the rest of the first floor left the duo with two locked doors: one on the west side, and one in the central tower. Opting for the west side first, the two were greeted with a fairly large pool of water whose vortex-like current was being churned by a powerful water source on the west side. "I'm hopping in to investigate. Snacker, let's go!" Before he could even get in the saddle, the current swept the shark away, forcing the Gym Leader to time his jump aboard as Snacker resisted the current. Diving to the bottom and letting his momentum carry him toward the underwater tunnel. Spurring his Pokémon to use AQUA JET, Josh ducked lower onto the dark-type's back as they entered. Even with the speed-boosting move, though, it proved to be something Snacker couldn't overcome.

"It's just like that current to the north," he pointed out as they scoured the rest of the room. They didn't leave empty-handed, though, finding a replacement SMALL KEY floating behind some Cloyster that were easy enough for his Lanturn to dispatch with DISCHARGE once they were clear of the water. "Welp, that leaves the central tower."

Using their newly-acuired key to open the lock, Josh immediately noticed several thick, wooden floats distinct from the stone the rest of the place was hewn from. At the far end was a similar painting to the one they had encountered before, only this one featured two waves instead of one. It, too, had a wall lever near it, which Josh was quick to flip. As he did, the sound of water pouring in drowned out all other ambiance. "Perfect. Now we can repeat this for the second level." Not so fast, though; if Navy was observant, he would have noticed that underneath the float was a fairly narrow hole leading to the tower's basement. According to their map, that was the only way down there...

“No.” Navy says, not harshly. The old detective hat is donned. With it comes an assertive tone as he spies a mystery. Nodding towards the hole, he starts making his way there. “This hole. Looks like it leads down to the bottom. Might just be worth our while to look down there.” Having followed Josh’s lead and contributed where he could, mostly with fighting off Pokemon that raised up to attack them along the way, he decides to take the lead for a moment.[break][break]
Of course, getting down’s gonna take a bit. It gives them a moment to talk. Looking over that ore, he can’t help but whistle. That’s a king’s ransom. Galar might have dynamaxing, Paldea has its tera crystals, but Hoenn has these mega stones. He imagines trainers overseas would kill for them – plus Hoenn gets all the other gimmicks, too.[break][break]
“Could arm a lot of people with those stones.” He observes. “You first among ‘em. Snacker’s gonna be a beast by the time we’re down here. Alright. One…two…!” Sucking in, he squeezes through the hole. Afterwards, Genbu comes out to soften the inevitable fall. They’ll bust their way back up if need be. He’s been in tighter spots.[break][break]

Navy's firm yet calm tone was a sign that the Dewford Gym Leader had began to trust him again after the Eris fallout. It was a true sign of maturity and of leadership. Josh was getting there, too, but he had a ways to go. "Whoa, good eye," Josh replied, his eyes shifting toward the secret passage his partner pointed out. "It's pretty narrow, though. Gonna need your help, Resheph." He withdrew his other Pokémon and clicked the switch on the Dragonair's Poké Ball, then slipped into his cocoon saddle and leaned in as much as the seat would allow.

"No kidding," Josh nodded, smiling at the anticipation of Mega Evolving Snacker. It would make him a real menace on the waves, and most importantly in his mind, would make the Sharpedo faster. They grew so big that they could even seat a second person if need be. Josh even sounded a cheap imitation of a revving engine with his voice, much like a child would playing with a toy car.

Following Navy's lead, Josh and Resheph took a dip through the hole in the floor, taking advantage of the Dragonair's narrow, serpentine body to avoid having to do some swimming himself. It was important for him to keep mobile, too; once the passage opened up into what appeared to be a vault-like chamber, another school of wild Pokémon greeted them. This time, several Clawitzer accompanied the Pincurchin. The major difference this time was that the Pincurchin were underwater.

Swimming around the entrance to the basement vault, Josh tried to find a line where he could vaporize as many of them as possible with a HYPER BEAM. When he issued the command, the water around them heated up substantially from the normal-type attack dragons were known for. The ray of pure energy dispatched three of the four, but he really needed to hit all four. Underwater, there was no evading the DISCHARGE conducted by the warm water growing hot.

Provided Navy was able to handle the remaining wilds, the path would be clear to the back of the vault, which would contain, among other treasure that would leave them financially set for a while, yet another SMALL KEY. "So many..." Josh sighed as he backtracked to the water's surface in the central tower's second level. "This place is so intricate. So wild. I wonder what Shalin would think of this."

Gunmetal eyes sway with Josh. They note the strategy he’s using. Smart. Clever. If you can take out everyone in one blast, recharging hardly matters, does it?[break][break]
A fresh Pokemon comes out of his ball. A nameless Ditto emerges. Navy has considered naming the creature before, but that seems pointless. As a creature perpetually in between identities, there’s little point in ascribing one to it if it doesn’t wish to have one.[break][break]
Ditto looks across the battlefield. Water filters into whatever passes for his lungs. Closing his eyes, the last thing he sees is a Dragonair. His form morphs, stretching until he is a mirror of Resheph. A hyper beam of his own forms in his mouth. With a blast, he catches the last of their opponents.[break][break]
Navy recoils from the heat wave. The water is piping hot, but a blast from Leviathan cools both Josh and himself down before it can prove fatal. Sighing in relief, he secures them a way back.[break][break]
“Well, looks like I might be able to buy that movie theater I’ve been eying for a while.” He says between heavy gulps of air. It’s nice to taste fresher air again. “Lopez sure wasn’t lying about gym battles. They dry up after a while.”[break][break]
Dripping, he stumbles up and looks about the second floor. Pointing to the right, he starts heading there.[break][break]
“Let’s see what’s behind door number three.”
