Alarms in the submarine came to life, alerting Team Rocket's security department that a bunker outside Fallarbor Town had been breached. The notice spread swiftly to the crime syndicate's agents across the region, both a warning and a request for aid:[break][break]

Zev was nearest at the time, already dressed in combat gear and mask for a different job. He shot back confirmation and flew on his Corviknight to the bunker in question.[break][break]

There, obvious from the air, was Groudon and its master.[break][break]

MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]

Zev leaped from his Corviknight's back, covering every inch of himself in crystalline armor. The impact of the landing shuddered through his body but didn't harm him.[break][break]

As Corviknight mega evolved and started off the battle with G-MAX WIND RAGE, Zev rushed toward Matias himself. Closing the gap between them quickly, he aimed an armored punch straight at Matias' head.

their main opposition today is not the odd figure clad in crystalline armor that lands near him, but damage control to ensure the bunker doesn't collapse in on itself with annalise henderson inside it.[break][break]

groudon and matias move as one. when he raises his arm to conjure up a PILLAR OF EARTH, so too does groudon with PRECIPICE BLADES, both looking to defend against oncoming attacks.[break][break]

G-MAX WIND RAGE breaks through, cracking earth and stone before finding groudon's thick skin. it roars from the attack only to spit a FIRE BLAST corviknight's way.[break][break]

the PILLAR OF EARTH crumbles as well from the punch but it buys enough space for matias to rotate and push himself away. he punches up from afar, summoning an EARTH SPIKE that looks to impale the person.[break][break]

The FIRE BLAST dealt a solid blow to Corviknight, ripping an agonizing screech from her throat as flames licked at her steel feathers. She plummeted through the air, but still tried to angle her descent to crash into Groudon with BODY PRESS.[break][break]

Zev, meanwhile, took the EARTH SPIKE without dodging. He braced his entire body, and when it struck him, he dug clawed hands into the rock so it wouldn't fling him several meters away.[break][break]

The attack would have skewered him, but the point broke off when it met his black carapace, sending fragments of stone spraying across the ground.[break][break]

"Unkillable," was his reply, the voice changer in his mask making his words come out as a deep, throaty growl.[break][break]

Disengaging from the broken spike, Zev summoned a spike of his own. With a forward thrust of his hand, a thick tendril of crystal lanced toward Matias, its pointed tip jagged and razor-sharp.

another guttural roar comes from groudon as it takes the impact of the BODY PRESS. shades of yellow begin to spark around it, dancing across lava-red scales as THUNDER seeks to strike the corviknight.[break][break]

nothing is unkillable. even the gods people pray to, the gods that grant them unimaginable power, even they can be killed.[break][break]

"not another fucking avatar."[break][break]

it's the only logical explanation for the seemingly impenetrable armor that surrounds them. he finds it familiar but is quickly forced to react to the returned crystal spike that shoots his way.[break][break]

understanding the strength of the crystal, he knows he can't deflect or defend against it. his only choice is to launch himself off to the side only to come crashing down a few feet away.[break][break]

this time, the EARTH SPIKE that pokes out of the ground beneath them EXPLODES.[break][break]

Though the earlier FIRE BLAST was not enough to incapacitate Zev's Corviknight, the ensuing THUNDER was. White-hot agony accompanied the waves of electricity coursing through her body. With a final cry, she slumped to the ground, unconscious.[break][break]

Unfortunately, before Zev could disengage and recall her, the stone spike in front of him exploded. The force threw him backward. He rolled and skidded across the ground until he came to a stop near his Pokémon.[break][break]

At once, he got back to his feet, shaking dust and stone off his shoulders. A quick draw of two Pokéballs allowed him to withdraw his Corviknight and release a second Pokémon at the same time.[break][break]

Type: Null stepped toward Groudon, snarling, eyes bright with a thirst for blood. Zev whistled, the sharp note cutting through the air. At the wordless command, Type: Null charged, aiming an IRON HEAD at Groudon's torso.[break][break]

Zev turned his masked visage upon Matias. With a flex of his hands, thick crystalline spikes protruded from his forearms like deadly vambraces.[break][break]

"So what if I am?" he taunted the Elite Four member. "Scared to get too close, Silph?"

his mind is elsewhere, focused on the objective.[break][break]

his words sound over the impact of IRON HEAD. groudon lumbers back, each step causing the ground to tremble.[break][break]

what follows that is an ERUPTION that sends molten lava scattering into the air before coming back down to rain across the route and the bunker.[break][break]

"you should focus on helping your allies. they won't survive otherwise."[break][break]

Zev's eyes narrowed. If Matias was not there to wreak havoc, then what was his objective? The bunker outside of which they fought was not an essential resource; only a few grunts were stationed there, if only to guard the prisoner annalise henderson.[break][break]

Understanding hit Zev like a thunderbolt, just as the ERUPTION rained molten lava down upon him and his Type: Null. The Synthetic Pokémon cried out in pain and rage as it suffered burns, and Zev's jacket caught fire. He ripped off that outer layer, revealing more of the solid crystal along his arms.[break][break]

"Not if I stop you," he snarled, before charging at Matias. Several thin, razor-edged tendrils shot out of his back, lashing out like whips toward the Elite Four member.[break][break]

Type: Null took the cue from its master and launched at Groudon, attempting to rip it apart with CRUSH CLAW.

matias is only there to stall and buy time for Greyson Connors, ollie morales, and DEREK HOFFMAN to reach annalise henderson. he knows this, it is what they have discussed, but the urge to raze the area rises with every passing second of this fight.[break][break]

groudon senses as much.[break][break]

as CRUSH CLAW rakes down the titan's armor, its tail rises only to slam back down to cause a terrible EARTHQUAKE.[break][break]

not used to playing defense, matias' WALL OF EARTH begins to crumble under the pressure of the tendrils, though it holds long enough for him to leap back and away.[break][break]

even with the EARTHQUAKING all around them, he remains on his feet, able to find his balance due to his powers. zev may not has as much luck.[break][break]

The EARTHQUAKE ripped the area apart, earth tearing wide open along deep fissures. Zev lost his balance and fell to the ground, slipping into a widening crack.[break][break]

The slender tendrils on his back retracted. When they reached him, they transformed into thick spikes and rooted into the soil, keeping him aboveground.[break][break]

The sundering toppled Type: Null as well, though its cry was more from surprise than pain. Scrambling to its feet, it leaped away from Groudon to find its master amid the debris. Zev reached for it, pulling himself onto its back.[break][break]

All the chaos and confusion was enough time for MATIAS SILPH to do as he pleased—retreat, rush to his comrades' aid, or simply destroy the bunker further.

in the chaos that comes from EARTHQUAKE, matias finds a moment of solitude complemented by satisfaction as he watches the terrain shift and swallow the man donned in crystals.[break][break]

static sounds in his ear.[break][break]

"did you get her?"[break][break]

dread and doubt stem from the silence that greets him. what if they didn't get to annalise henderson in time? what if she's still stuck down there buried under rubble and debris? the team tasked with rescuing her is incompetent enough to have failed. perhaps he should have been the one to do it instead.[break][break]

the static stops, interrupted by confirmation that annalise henderson has been rescued. he breathes a sigh of relief.[break][break]

"good. get her out of here."[break][break]

because he does not leave yet. though the mission has been a success, there is still work to be done.[break][break]

fleeing rocket forces—even the ones not visible to him from his point of view—are targeted with PRECIPICE BLADES that erupt along the route.[break][break]

The screams of fleeing grunts reached Zev even though he couldn't see them. He surveyed the destruction of the bunker. Parts of it were already being swallowed by the earth, its framework giving way as its foundation crumbled.[break][break]

From where Zev sat atop Type: Null's back, he could not see any escaping League agents or their rescued captive. The only other figures visible were Groudon and MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]

Zev uttered a low whistle, loud enough that only his Type: Null could hear. The Synthetic Pokémon burst into sudden motion, charging the Elite Four member headlong.[break][break]

It lowered its helmeted skull, determined to smash into the man with IRON HEAD.

the screams echo across the hollow battlefield, cut short by PRECIPICE BLADES that act not as judge nor jury but as executioner.[break][break]

knowing there are no watchful eyes on him, he closes his own, listening to the sounds of war and terror as though they are what fuels him.[break][break]

movement draws his attention and the EARTH WALL doesn't come up fast enough to stop the IRON HEAD.[break][break]

"—!"[break][break]

the type: null rams into his side, the impact lessened only slightly but enough to nullify a deadly blow. it sends him across the air before crashing down into the ground with the consciousness almost knocked out of him.[break][break]

he blinks, dazed and hurt as he coughs out blood.[break][break]

Despite the successful blow to Matias, Zev's Type: Null still suffered injury from the wall of earth and stone it had smacked into first. The large Pokémon stumbled and fell to its knees in the dirt, sending its rider tumbling to the ground.[break][break]

A ground that continued to shift and sunder thanks to the earlier earthquake.[break][break]

Shit, Zev thought as he scrambled to his feet. As much as he wanted to kill Matias, staying there to finish the job was too risky, especially since the earth was Matias' domain.[break][break]

At least he'd landed a blow hard enough to send the other man to the hospital. The Rocket Beast recalled his Type: Null and released his Gengar.[break][break]

"Get us out of here," Zev said. Smoke obliged, and in the span of a heartbeat, they were gone.
