At your request for a challenge, the Beast side-eyes you before roaring loudly, the sky again flashing like a strobe light as a torrent of lightning bolts encircles the section of Route 119 by the shrine. A curious Josh turns his Manectric around, the two slowly backing away as the purple storm cloud above you continues to swirl, growing in intensity. Though it is difficult for you to see each other, thanks to the dancing lightning surrounding you and your Pokémon, you hear him let out a wail, frustrated that he is too weak to battle Raikou himself.[break][break]

The Beast thrusts a paw toward your face with blinding speed, blinding you with the sharp pain of an electrical burn. Raikou and your Pokémon have a violent battle of thunder, lightning, and blistering speed. It is impossible for the untrained eye to follow. The god of speed makes finding an opening a gargantuan task. When you think you find one, your foe is already a step ahead, throwing his electrified body at your Pokémon and knocking it to the ground. This battle does not seem to be going at all well, and with the lightning bolts still circling the makeshift battleground, escape at this point would be foolhardy.[break][break]

Your tactics are too slow to harm the Beast with a direct EARTHQUAKE. Raikou leaps and pounces at your Pokémon, leaving its face bleeding just as profusely as yours from an equally intense electrical burn. The rumbling aftershocks disrupt the electric-type's balance, giving you an opening for a follow-up attack.[break][break]

You gain the upper hand for a while until another deafening, thunderous roar pushes you and Pokémon back. The lightning strikes start to concentrate around Raikou, creating a dome of gleaming electricity that is bright enough to remove almost all color from your perspective of the Beast. The Raikou-silhouette, despite not having a trainer, appears to be gathering Z-Power. The only color you can see from behind the dome is the blood-red glare coming from its eyes. You can't tell who it's going to charge, whether it be you, your Pokémon, or the distant Josh, but you feel that once it flings its body forward, whatever attack this is will be too fast to react to in any way.[break][break]

The preparation for the Z-Move has caused Raikou to drop the encircling lightning ring trapping you. This may be the only chance you get to flee the Beast with your life intact, if you are feel overwhelmed and are inclined to retreat.[break][break]

Your Garchomp meets the Z-Power with a direct attack, leaping for the jugular. Lightning envclops Raikou's entire body, meeting the leap with one of his own. For a split second, Beast claws and dragon claws glint in the vicious storm.[break][break]

In the next, a sonic boom deafens you as lightning arcs over your Garchomp - Raikou's Z-MOVE, TACHYON TEMPEST. It is a move so fast as to be unavoidable even by other legendary Pokémon. Being a ground-type affords the Garchomp little protection against the divine, thunderous charge. You get a good view of Raikou's knife-like fangs with blood dripping from them.[break][break]

Your Garchomp's blood.[break][break]

The furious Beast is not done yet. The Z-MOVE: TACHYON TEMPEST also bestows Raikou with speed far greater than it had before. Speed so fast that by the time you can get a Poké Ball in your hand, it has already pounced upon you. Josh reaches for you, abandoning his pursuit of Raikou in an effort to save both his own life and yours.[break][break]

His heroic efforts are far too late.[break][break]

Raikou sinks his fangs into you, laced with immeasurable voltage. Simultaneously, white lightning flies from the Beast's thundercloud, enveloping Josh and his mount in a vortex of electricity that even a LIGHTNING ROD cannot completely absorb. As both of you fight to remain conscious, a noble but stern voice rings in your minds.[break][break]

"Fanatics are a waste of my time and effort. What can a panderer offer me that they do not already offer? I want someone with the courage to fight for their homeland, and my homeland, to the very end. Someone willing to give everything they have, not for me, but for the people of the lands they defend. You, Gabe, fit my desires well. I implore you to reconsider, though I can tell your iron mind will not."[break][break]

As the voice continues, you feel that the Beast is disappointed in your decision, but has respected it due to your tremendous courage. "Your companion would be ideal, but not as he is now. Though his selflessness is part of what I desire, I do not desire one who is selfless to the point of self-destruction. Such a man is but a fool, and would not survive a moment against a truly deadly foe. My blessing would be a waste upon one who cannot take care of themselves."[break][break]

With that, the Beast bounds off, you, Josh, and your two Pokémon in tremendous pain but with your lives intact. The storm ceases, in its wake a soothing rain that eases some of your pain away. You escort a wordless Josh back to the nearest city to get both of you, as well as your Pokémon, the medical attention they need. Though he leaves his encounter with Raikou without the Avatarship he desires, the Beast's wisdom will serve him in a greater way than Avatarship ever could.[break][break]
