Gunner trudged up the stairs to his apartment, his suit jacket tucked under one arm, his other hand hauling a plastic bag of cheap Kantonese takeout. His ID card, typically worn around his neck on a lanyard, was tucked safely in his pocket.[break][break]

The hour neared midnight, but he was only just returning home from another long day at the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.[break][break]

Normally, the apartment building was quiet when he got home that late at night. A noise coming from the hallway was highly unusual. Gunner tensed, wary, as he crested the stairs and turned the corner.[break][break]

A man stood outside his door, fumbling with something.[break][break]

"Hey," Gunner yelled, quickening his pace. "What are you doing? Who are you?"

”Huuh? The fuck’s it matter to you?” He said as he turned to look over his shoulder before his expression softened slightly, he looked around before looking back at Gunner. ”Guess you’re the neighbour. Moved in recently.” He said as he tried to stand up straight before he wobbled backwards before catching himself.

The stench of alcohol on his breath was apparent, the disheveled look of his clothes showed that he might just have fallen earlier that night, but the mud on his knees confirmed such a fact. In truth, he looked a bit a mess. ”Just…A pain in the butt to grab my ke-There they are.” He said as they jangled, before he tried to stick his car key into his neighbours door.

Gunner observed the other man's disheveled, drunken state. He remembered, then, catching a glimpse of his new neighbor on move-in day. But Gunner had been on his way out, and had therefore been too busy to introduce himself or even say hello.[break][break]

When the man attempted to open Gunner's apartment door with a car key, the blonde sighed. "Hey, that's my place. I think you're in that one."[break][break]

He gestured with his takeout bag to the opposite door, across the hall.[break][break]

"I'm Gunner, by the way. It's nice meeting you."

It was a simple sound, but it showed the frustration he felt as he pulled back with a stumble. ”Gunner huh, not a bad name. Seiya’s the name, nice to meet ya neighbour.” He said as he held himself up against the wall for a moment before taking in a deep breath.

”Sorry ‘bout the door, have a good night.” He said as he walked before the scent of the takeout drew his attention. ”Is that…Kantonian?” It smelt familiar, food from his homeland.

Gunner blinked, taken aback by the sudden attention to his food. "Uh, yeah. It's from a restaurant a couple of blocks away. I sometimes stop by when I'm working this late."[break][break]

A long pause as he considered Seiya's drunken state and what a good neighbor would do. And, despite Gunner's strong desire to eat his food in peace and go to sleep, he started speaking again.[break][break]

"Have you, uh, eaten yet? Want to come inside?"[break][break]

He'd ordered enough food for two men, if only because he'd intended to save some of it as leftovers for the next day.

Upon Seiya's response, Gunner unlocked his front door and stepped inside, turning on the lights as he went. "Come in, then. Shoes off, please."[break][break]

His home was a decently-sized one-bedroom apartment. The common area was a combination kitchen-dining-living room. A couch occupied the space opposite the TV, while a table that seated four people stood off to the side.[break][break]

Gunner set the takeaway bags down on the table and started to unpack them.[break][break]

"I'm a paralegal at a law firm in here in Slateport called Wesson and Sons." He handed Seiya a set of cheap, wooden chopsticks. "What about you? What do you do for work?"

Seiya looked over at the food on the table, and then glanced around the apartment, the layout was more or less the same as his own, but the choice of furniture was different; then again Seiya rarely had people over. He took off his shoes just as instructed, and left them beside the door before he stepped in properly.

”Hm? Me? Training to be a Ranger, just a humble cadet, me and a couple eighteen year olds. Worked delivery prior to that.” He said as he shrugged, coming to Hoenn with the background didn’t keep all too many potential jobs open to him.

”Paralegal huh? Wonder why you’d opt to live in a small apartment like this.” He said as he sat down on the table, looking over at the Kantonian food, chopsticks held tightly in his hand.

Gunner chuckled as he took the seat to Seiya's right. "I'm not really the kind of guy who's interested in settling down," he admitted. "I just live sensibly. And paralegals don't make that much money." [break][break]

He served a portion of food for himself and began to eat. The food was cheap but flavorful, especially at such a late hour and when in possession of an empty stomach. [break][break]

"The Rangers, huh?" Gunner said after a few bites. "I hope they're training you well. A lot happens in Hoenn that makes it different from other regions. Alien invasions, attacks from strange Pokémon, rifts to other worlds opening up…" [break][break]

Listing the strange phenomenon off like that to a stranger certainly made them all sound absurd.

Seiya could slowly nod as he listened to the other man, his hands already reaching for the chopsticks, carefully holding it between his fingers before taking the first bite. He reeled back just a little, his face contorted in a sneer at the food. ”Yeah, makes sense. This ain’t proper Kantonian, but then again, Paralegals should make enough to cover a starting family.” He said as a jab embroiled in humor.

”Take it from an older guy, Marriage will be the first and last true happiness you’ll attain.” Said the divorcee, he looked down at his bowl before he chuckled at the contents of his work.

Gunner ignored the comments about family and marriage as pointedly as he ignored the sneer on Seiya's face as he took a bite of food. The other man had given his opinion unsolicited, and besides, he didn't look to be much older than Gunner. [break][break]

Instead, the blonde focused on the topic of the Rangers. [break][break]

"Maybe it feels like school, but once you're in the fray yourself, it feels like more of a warzone," he said, his expression grim. "When we were sure the meteoroid was going to crash into Hoenn, everyone was directed into shelters and bunkers." [break][break]

Of course, Gunner hadn't personally waited in one. He'd been fighting for his life on Mt. Pyre. [break][break]

"And then, in the rifts… Well, there are rumors that you can die and come back to life in them." [break][break]

Again, not a rumor. The exact thing had happened to him while venturing into the Border.
