Zev had to give the gym leader credit; his reflexes were fast. But fleetness was not enough to deter the Beast from his hunt. The punch Navy aimed at his throat was a fool's gambit. Zev was tempted to let the strike land, if only to see the horror on the other man's face when flesh shredded and bone shattered.[break][break]

But there was a quicker and more efficient way to end this fight. Zev dropped into a crouch, kicking out his leg to sweep Navy off his feet. If successful, he would jump back up and aim a spike straight down into Navy's heart.[break][break]

Unfortunately, that was when the Dragapult's REFLECT activated. Zev felt the shield's resistance, watched its glow ripple across his victim's body as his crystal struck it.[break][break]

Elsewhere, the DRAIN PUNCH sapped the strength from Hydreigon. He screamed in outrage, looking more and more ragged as the clash with Navy's Urshifu dragged on. Flapping his wings, he tried to put distance between himself and the bear before retaliating with HYPER VOICE.[break][break]

Above, a whisper heralded Smoke's return, the Gengar appearing behind Navy's Dragapult to finish his PHANTOM FORCE strike.

Even a dumb dragon can see the writing on the wall. Struck by the Gengar’s phantom force, he senses killing intent. One death was enough. Flashing two peace signs of his own, Fafnir launches another dart at Gengar. Turning on a dime, he makes a swift u-turn into his pokeball.[break][break]
A new combatant was sitting in his pokeball, waiting for a chance to rush out. Musashi’s a cocky son of a gun. Navy helped Melody Miro rescue him from a fighting pit under Slateport. As it turned out, he simply likes to fight. Rather than dismissing him as a lost cause, Navy took him in. Here on the frontlines, perhaps they can find purpose together.[break][break]
He greets Gengar with a punch. His bladed steel fists are quick as lightning. Falling into a boxer’s pose, he circles around Gengar. If a creature with no visible mouth could smile, Musashi manages. There’s mirth in his eyes. Even a life or death battle can be fun.[break][break]
Then comes Shuwen. He’s an old hand at fighting dragons. When they realize their strength will not avail them, they try to use distance to their advantage. They shout, scream, scorch him with fire. He has been burned before, and by a far mightier creature than this. Launching himself after the Hydreigon, Shuwen’s a regular aerial ace. He tries to grip the central head by the neck, wanting to spin him around like a lasso as gravity starts to do its job.[break][break]
“Huh…surprised that holds.” Fafnir has bought the detective time. While that reflect holds, he can afford to breathe easier, if only for a moment. Sensing what Shuwen will do next, he presses a button while skirting back, trying to keep as much distance between this monster and himself.[break][break]
“You’re not the talkative type, are you?” Somehow, even in the middle of a life or death battle, he can find the will to smile as he asks that question, anticipating the impending storm. His sygna suit deactivates. With the shield spent, all it’s doing is preventing Shuwen from seizing victory.

"No," came the brusque, guttural response.[break][break]

Hydreigon fell to the deck with a heavy thud as the AERIAL ACE knocked him out of commission, distracting Zev from the retreating gym leader. Uttering a sound of disdain, the Beast recalled his Pokémon into a capsule before releasing yet another.[break][break]

His shiny Blacephalon cartwheeled across the deck, flipping over the head of Navy's Urshifu to blast both it and the Scizor with INCINERATE.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Smoke landed on the deck. Zev pressed the Key Stone embedded in his wristwatch. The Gengar shone with a sudden, glaring light, growing in size until he spanned the width of the ship.[break][break]

When the light faded, the Mega Gengar's massive, grinning maw and lolling tongue greeted Navy and his Pokémon. SHADOW TAG activated, preventing escape.[break][break]

And then, calling upon all the souls of the damned beyond the gate he guarded, Smoke unleashed G-MAX TERROR upon the Urshifu.

Musashi’s bug wings beat up a wind. The tailwind he conjures gives speed to Navy, Shuwen, and himself. It helps him outspeed enough of the flames to not be utterly incinerated, taking a brief dive into the water before he’s melted.[break][break]
Shuwen catches fire. Doubtless, a lesser man, one who isn’t his nightmare, would find it unnerving that the Urshifu has no strong reaction to this. His body was already a galaxy of burn scars. A Walking Wake scorched him in the caves beneath Ever Grande. Powerful as an Ultra Beast is, the flames do not burn as hot as those of the Walking Wake.[break][break]
“Well, I talk a lot. Just the kind of guy I am.” Emboldened by the tailwind, Navy goes on the offensive. Drawing close to the masked wolf, he sees that his mega stone is also affixed to a watch. Caught in the eye of the storm, he wonders if that watch was a gift from a brother. It passes. He can’t afford to humanize someone so hellbent on making himself out to be inhuman.[break][break]
“And your Pokemon fits you like a glove.” He employs hit and run tactics as Shuwen is enveloped in white light. Their two Pokemon are twin suns, bursting with power across the ship. Once again, the ship begins to fracture. This time, they’re equally culpable. What sailors haven’t yet evacuated are helped along by Hattori.[break][break]
“Shuwen! Go all out!” Shuwen’s fur is a mosaic of blue and red. Where he has been burned, the bright blue fur of a rapid strike Urshifu has been scorched red.[break][break]
Shuwen is hit. He never doubted he would be hit. Pain is a consequence for later. Now, he needs to be here, where Navy needs him. His fists are a blur. Gengar pierces his heart with fear. Fear, too, can be overcome. Fear can be punched. Nightmares must inevitably end.[break][break]
Man and Mon are a reflection of each other. G-Max Rapid Flow finds far more purchase than Navy’s flurry of blows. Oh how he dances. His body is loose, going with the flow. Even if he can’t win, he can bob and weave. He can annoy the demon that whispers in his sleep, thumb his eye. There’s victory in that, if not for the League than for himself.[break][break]

Zev had no response for Navy's chatter. Neither did he bother dodging the other man's punches. REFLECT protected Navy from Zev's attacks; it did nothing to save his own skin and bones from shredding across razor-sharp crystal.[break][break]

If he wanted to destroy his hands, so be it.[break][break]

Smoke weathered the Mega Evolved Urshifu's attack as best as he could, retaliating with GIGA DRAIN since his enemy was so close.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Blacephalon dropped back onto the deck, flanking the mythical bear. Chittering madly, the noise resembling laughter, it blasted Urshifu with PSYCHIC.

He thanks his lucky stars that one of his healers still remain, or his hands would be useless after this. Backing away, blood dripping down his hands, he tests his right hand. There’s still enough function left to grab a ball and open it. That’ll be enough.[break][break]
“Shuwen, keep it up.” He says, backstepping into the safety of the reflect. “Don’t let up. Two can play the game he’s playing.”[break][break]
Two Pokemon focus fire on him. Shuwen pivots. Instead of returning fire on Gengar, his body absolutely pulsates with infinity energy. This trick’s one he can only pull once. Best to make it count. His fist blasts the Blacephalon. It hits him again. And again. The surging strikes would hurt Gengar, but they promise absolute devastation upon the ultra beast.[break][break]
Musashi jumps from the water, returning to the fight and hitting Gengar with a bullet punch. For a moment, the two fighters switch opponents.[break][break]

Combo Hit: A secret technique of the rapid strike school. for a brief period of time, all offensive moves hit 3 times, but the follow-up attacks are weaker.

The combination of the Z-move and SURGING STRIKES knocked back Blacephalon, sending the Ultra Beast flying across the ship. Along the way, it smashed into various crates and equipment before coming to rest near the railing.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the BULLET PUNCH hit its mark. Smoke turned a malevolent eye upon the Scizor, the light of infinity energy filling him in turn. Then the long tongue whipped out, trying to snatch Scizor out of the air for a Z-MOVE: MALICIOUS MAW.[break][break]

gengar ensnares its opponent with its tongue before drawing them in with a bite. it slathers them in ectoplasm before spitting them out as a projectile. upon impact, the ectoplasm will detonate.

Zev recalled his Blacephalon back into a Pokéball. He had few Pokémon left, but Navy was in the same predicament. And with the way the ship buckled and groaned, they had precious time left on the battlefield.[break][break]

He released his Corviknight, who took wing above the scene before diving to attack the Urshifu with DRILL PECK.

Shuwen takes some solace in this: he can get energy back from the Corviknight. Damaged though he is in turn, the drain punches he delivers up to his opponent serve well enough as a parting shot. All of them know the score. Beneath them, the ship titters on the brink of collapse.[break][break]
There is no shame in the retreat he must soon undertake. Running low on Pokemon, he’ll say a quiet prayer to Arceus that he managed to bloody the nose of a monster and weaken a few of his Pokemon.[break][break]
It’s not enough.[break][break]

The SILVER WIND ripped up the inside of Smoke's mouth just enough that he lobbed the Scizor away with additional vengeful force. The ectoplasm coating the Bug-type detonated.[break][break]

Bright light enveloped the Gengar's body as the Mega Evolution faded. His original form restored, he staggered from accumulated injuries. As the Urshifu bore down on him, Smoke attempted one last attack.[break][break]

DAZZLING GLEAM lit up the ship.[break][break]

Recovered from the earlier DRAIN PUNCH, Corviknight swooped low to the deck, dodging the deadly pink energy. With a running start, Zev leaped onto her back and clutched at steel feathers.[break][break]

Smoke saw this and followed, disengaging from their foes.[break][break]

Let the gym leader and his Pokémon sink into the sea with the rest of the ship.
