Zev descended upon a League communications relay station with all the might of a Team Rocket Beast, his Seviper unleashing a FLAMETHROWER at the nearest personnel. Screams filled the air as League operatives scrambled away from the fire.[break][break]

Like all members of the crime syndicate on Route 105, Zev was there on the offensive. But he had come to that relay station in particular to back up Underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli. Supposedly, they could get intel about FERNANDO SILPH's location from the radios set up there.[break][break]

But first, they had to deal with the pesky League fools trying to stop them.[break][break]

A few did send out their own Pokémon to defend the station. Zev whistled low, sending his Seviper ahead to engage. He chanced a look over to see how Elisabeth was faring.

A sort of ennui characterized her movements with Zev Harcourt here as they sliced through the meaningless mass of Leaguers that had dared to stand against them. Neither pity nor bloodlust stirred to the surface as she watched them fall, one by one, at the feet of the man next to her. The feat might have equally impressed and horrified her a year ago.[break][break]

But what did a god care for the fate of ants?[break][break]

Her disinterest showed in her own battle strategy; the Venusaur lumbering behind her rumbled as EARTH POWER shook the cavern, lazily shoving those that might have tried to evade the FLAMETHROWER towards the Seviper's fiery jaws.[break][break]

"He won't be here," she said impatiently, casting a dispassionate glance at her surroundings. Irritation, shameless and undisguised, coated her words in disgust. "And no one worth our time is here to interrogate, I'd wager."[break][break]

A SUNNY DAY cast its searing light on the enemies gathered, like a beacon of judgment that found them all wanting.

"Maybe not," Zev admitted, stepping over injured League agents as they moaned and cried on the ground. "But there should be a radio. We can check the different comms channels and see if we can get information from them."[break][break]

His Seviper sank her fangs into a screaming Ranger, delivering a deadly dose of poison. Zev ignored the man's dying wails as he surveyed a workstation. Several half-empty cans of energy drinks and RAGE CANDY BAR wrappers littered its surface.[break][break]

In its center, however, a map spread across it, the beginnings of different triangulations marked with red pencil.[break][break]

Not all of the island had been charted yet—indeed, the northern face where Team Rocket's own forces gathered was still blank. But several League stations and routes were already scored in graphite.[break][break]

"We can use this, too," Zev said to Elisabeth without looking at her.

Such as kyle lopez, not so long ago. Their fight had left her unsettled, and distantly, she recalled why.[break][break]

A furtive glance was spared at the Beast beside her, before she asked, "The crystals that you bear, as Necrozma's chosen. Have you ever seen a weapon forged of that same metal?"[break][break]

It might be a coincidence, but it might not.

Zev's hands stilled over the map. His thoughts immediately flashed to the knife kyle lopez had held with expert skill in his hand, a knife made of the same metal as the crystals in Zev's body. A metal that no one else had any right to possess.[break][break]

"You fought kyle lopez," the Beast said. It wasn't a question.[break][break]

A strange possessiveness reared its head within him then, not dissimilar to what he once felt for Caleb Harcourt. Zev glared up at Elisabeth, suddenly connecting dots.[break][break]

In their own fight, the Top Champion's exhibited behavior had been erratic, aggressive. It contradicted reports of Kyle's tendency to watch from the sidelines, to control the crowd, to intervene only when necessary.[break][break]

Instead, it had been as if some DOPPELGANGER had fought Zev in Kyle's place.[break][break]

"What did you do to him?" Zev asked, already anticipating the answer.

Zev Harcourt had experienced the BERSERK trance of Tapu Fini's mist firsthand. He'd know her promise wasn't a lie.[break][break]

Still, the fact that the Beast could care about anything or anyone other than himself hadn't occurred to Elisabeth Fiorelli. To her mind, he was as selfish as people believed she was.[break][break]

Yet when he fixed his cold gaze upon her, she felt the distinct chill of possessiveness in his anger.[break][break]

"You overstepped," the smoldering fury in his eyes threatened.[break][break]

"You gifted kyle lopez a weapon?" she inferred, crossing her arms as she weathered the judgment in his stare. "That's uncharacteristically generous of you."[break][break]

Her mind drifted to the chemical weapon in her pocket, fashioned by ALEXANDER STONE to release Nihilego neurotoxins on her unsuspecting enemy.[break][break]

"Unless he stole it?" she challenged him, arching an eyebrow dubiously.

"Neither," Zev said at once, his tongue sharp with denial. He stepped away from the map on the table. "I think he made it from the crumbled remains of Zamazenta's shield."[break][break]

Despite the strength of his conviction, a strange itch in the back of his mind told him that was not completely true. Zev did not know why he should know.[break][break]

"Bee, Volchitsa, and I found similar loose metal in Lesser Megalopolis, armoring some ULTRA BEASTS," he explained to Elisabeth while he moved through the camp.[break][break]

Most of the League forces had fled or were incapacitated; they no longer tried to stop him as he searched for the radio.[break][break]

"Lopez must have collected enough to make the knife he wielded."[break][break]

But the answer to how Kyle could have transformed such indestructible material into a weapon was beyond Zev. He himself hadn't tried; he couldn't remove the crystals from his body, and any loose ones he passed by immediately found their way inside him.

"Well," she remarked drily, utterly unconvinced as she resumed her overview of the map, "what a surprising discovery that would be. We can add rare weapons forging to the list of the Champion's unique specialties, next to excelling in arcade games and dog training."[break][break]

Her carmine eyes narrowed, having landed on something that seemed promising, and she snatched up the paper and rolled it up for herself to hold onto.[break][break]

"I have yet to venture to Lesser Megalopolis," she continued, content to have taken the valuable resource without consulting with the Beast beforehand. "What are your thoughts on it?"[break][break]

Another question bubbled up to the surface as she fell into step with her Venusaur, one she voiced aloud out of nothing but pure curiosity.[break][break]

"Or on the Megalopolans, for that matter?"

Zev ignored Elisabeth's caustic remarks as he approached a machine he recognized as the radio. Situating himself in front of it, he put on the headphones and began turning the dial to tune into various channels.[break][break]

The topic of LESSER MEGALOPOLIS and its former inhabitants drew Zev's attention from the static and chatter on the other end.[break][break]

"The city has been abandoned for a reason," he said, his tone apathetic. "A lot of it is in disrepair, like it's been that way for a very long time. We can still gain resources from it, mostly in terms of data and technology. The tower has a lot of interesting information inside it."[break][break]

He paused to listen to orders from the Rangers, but he heard nothing of FERNANDO SILPH in the dispatch.[break][break]

"As for the Megalopolans…" Zev shrugged and turned the radio dial again. "I don't trust them completely. They have their own agendas besides Team Rocket's interests. But like any tool, they can be manipulated to certain ends."[break][break]

Suddenly, a voice crackled over the League's comms. "…cover Councilman Silph as he takes the route along the southwestern coast."[break][break]

Zev ripped off the headset and extended it to Elisabeth. "I got him. Listen to this."
