But between everything that had happened since Goodbye Galar, everything that had happened as the wound in his heart continued to fester and fester —

Why visit him?[break][break]

It haunts Chu-e as they spread makeup over skin, tuck hair up into a bun. It feels desperate. It feels cheap.[break][break]

So why visit?[break][break]

It doesn't stop them. From trying to make themself look pretty. From trying to make themself look less like a walking corpse.[break][break]

jayden cross didn't love them, not anymore. It was either some passing fancy that hung around too long or a crutch over a lonely heart. So, logic would provide that Chu-e shouldn't visit him.[break][break]

But they do.[break][break]

The door cracks open and Chu-e only stands in the doorway for a long few moments as they stare at one another.[break][break]

"You're cold today, Jayden." They close the door behind them and cross the room. Help themselves to a chair and pull it up beside the bed. Chu-e looks over the other with a tilt of the head, a stray lock of hair curling against their cheek.

Delicate bones grind together. Chu-e doesn't flinch as jayden cross crushes them; even when bruises are already swelling and reddening when Jayden releases them.[break][break]

"I did." And Chu-e still doesn't answer the question. Doesn't bother to apologize.[break][break]

Jayden knew better than almost anyone how hard it was to both love and be loved by Chu-e Choi. It was something terrible and rotten that only he and Eris Halla would ever really understand.[break][break]

At the end, Chu-e loses the plot, though.[break][break]

Brows furrowing, Chu-e shakes their head.[break][break]

"What do you mean?"

[break][break] He knows that there's nothing to apologize for, not anymore. But the fact that he never did still grinds something within him, something old and forgotten, and it resurfaces memories that he'd rather nothing to do with.

"I'm selfish." Chu-e answers both questions at once, easily this time. They look as if about to lean forward. To kiss? To tease? For nothing at all?[break][break]

But the audience in the corner of the room makes Chu-e pause. They sits back up, back straight, and give an unimpressed look to the snow leopard.[break][break]

Chu-e's bond with Necrozma had never been the perfect symbiosis like with Zev Harcourt (not that Chu-e knew about that). Necrozma had left holes and aches in their body. Like any mother, they would never be shaped quite the same way inside after giving birth. Some of these old aches sing when Chu-e locks eyes with the thing watching.[break][break]

[break][break] Bitterness formed like malice in the back of his throat. It was an answer, but not one that was satisfying. Chu-e had always been like that, speaking in riddles more than answers. Doing what he liked, when he liked.

[break][break] 'It's why you liked him,' a small voice in the back of his head needled, poking at an old wound that had been left untouched for too long.

[break][break] The look in Jayden's eyes snaps into a glare, even as Chu-E leans forward. His jaw clenched, whether it is to hold back his warring emotions, or the displeasure that the other's presence innately gives him.

[break][break] But then Chu-e leans back.

[break][break] Without even knowing, Jayden knows why.

[break][break] The devil prowls forward slowly, it's icy gaze bearing down on the creature that had once made his victim's heart beat. It likes this one. More than it likes the other one. The other one who softens jayden cross too much, who makes him too weak and untouchable to his ruinous influence.

[break][break] Jayden's eyes snap to blue and he reaches forward, gripping at the hem of the other's shirt.

"I didn't put you in this hospital bed." It is an argument that does not dismiss the first statement. Or any time that jayden cross was hurt because of them before.[break][break]

The beast stalks closer and Chu-e just gives it an unimpressed look. There is a spike of annoyance, that this creature would interrupt when they were so busy spinning webs. To weave Jayden further into the wide net that Chu-e would cast over others.[break][break]

But, it did have the advantage of being cute.[break][break]

They stay in their seat thanks to Jayden's hold, but it does not stop them from leaning over. They stretch out and offer their hand to the white pokemon as Chu-e might any other feline. Relaxed, but careful.[break][break]

"I want to pet you." Spoken to the cat. It is less a suggestion and more an order.

His hands tremble with the effort of his emotion, staring back into that eyes made of indigo, skies so vast that he'd once wanted to drown in them. But now, filled with HATRED all he ever wanted to do was to scorch those wildflowers to ash.

[break][break] "I loved you," he snarled. "I would've given everything up for you."

[break][break] His love, his life.

[break][break] It was the reason that he'd become a Beast. It was the reason that he had gotten himself stabbed for their benefit.

[break][break] He would've done anything.

[break][break] As the boy trembles with the intensity of his emotion, Chien Pao only lurks. His God is endeared to this thing that casts the boy in such broken glory, so much better than the other one who only hardens his heart from him. No, Chu-e Choi makes jayden cross bleed.

[break][break] Slowly, the feline blinks. Almost as if in thanks.

[break][break] 'Thank you for breaking him for me.'

Chu-e can almost taste the frost on jayden cross's breath when he speaks.[break][break]

He closes his eyes and breaths in deeply. Still in quiet even as he is gripped in trembling hands, is shaken by fragile words.[break][break]

Slowly, Chu-e raises his hands up to cup Jayden's where he grips. Cold, but not as cold as Jayden's touch. A slow, steady breath in preparation to rip off this particular bandage.[break][break]

"Jayden Cross. You need to get over me." Chu-e's gentleness, the edging around whatever this was- it's brought to a standstill. It chokes and rips at his own heart as he says it. A squeeze of jealousy against fern delaney, someone he has never met. Yet, this was the right thing to do.[break][break]

Chu-e opens his eyes again and they brim with emotion. But they are hard and flinty, not the pathetic mirrors he allows others to see. Only his own. Only Chu-e Choi. Only the man who made Cinnabar's sea bleed.[break][break]

"Even if you loved me. Even if I do love you. You have someone better for you.[break][break]

His words are harsh. They are firm. They are not unkind. Chu-e squeezes jayden cross's hand with force.[break][break]

"I married Arthur and got him murdered. I tore Leon to pieces for fun. Jayden, what do you think would have happened if we were ever more serious than a series of fleeting glances and a stolen kiss? I'm a terrible person who can't be fixed by sweet words or good intentions. I would have loved you too hard and ruined you just like I do everyone else. Get. Over. Me."
