The gigantic Venusaur responds by pretending to ignore her trainer's affection, yawning widely and exposing fangs and a wide mouth that could swallow the girl whole.[break][break]

She turns to the trees planted in a row next, which Shuwen helped her plant six months ago when she was recovering from the battle at Granite Cave. They've really grown lush in that time, and it's hard to believe they were mere sprouts less than a year ago. She takes the fruit in hand, inspecting whether it's ripe enough for another pie.[break][break]

It'd be perfect for her return visit to Dewford.[break][break]

"Aya missed this place, y'know. I can tell. She seems so at ease up here, unlike anywhere else." Evergrande city was a big place, full of perfectly manicured and cultivated courtyards and fields, but none of it was quite the same as the organic growth that Tsubaki managed here on this tiny rooftop.[break][break]

"It's a little too artificial over in Evergrande. They like to keep appearances more than they really enjoy nature." With that witty remark, she turns back to Navy with a smirk. Expecting his sigh, or his smile. All things told, though she'd loathe to admit it to him, the month or so she'd spent away from home had been exceedingly lonely.[break][break]

It doesn't seem like it's been that long at all, but it also feels like a lifetime.[break][break]

This town doesn’t change. It never has, it never will. The closest it’s had to change was the battle that took place here half a year ago. Thanks to the efforts of its sheriff, it remains exactly as it was when they found it together.[break][break]
Navy, too, hasn’t really changed. His induction into AQUA has done little to dampen his drive to protect the town. If anything, it’s only made his drive stronger.[break][break]
“I try not to go there unless I’ve gotta.” He admits. More and more, there’s reason for him to be there. He only narrowly avoided an appointment to the Elite 4 – citing a desire to remain in Dewford as its sheriff and gym leader. It doesn’t feel right, leaving without even finding a replacement.[break][break]
“It’s good to see you back home, Baki. Ivy’s missed you.” His own Ivysaur walks up, nuzzling both Tsubaki and her Venusaur. “All the boys from Dewford High started acting wild, once they heard you were back. Seems boys that age like mysterious girls from overseas.”

"Unfortunately for them, I'm not into guys who fetishize superficial things like that." Just as well, cause she'd loathe to settle down in a place like this, all the excitement of the Sea beneath the island aside. This was still a backwater island, a place where not a lotta people lived, a far cry from the metropolis she grew up in. This town was too small to contain a woman like her. [break][break]

"Don't worry, though. I'll pass by on my way outta town to remind 'em they don't got a chance." She smirks, turning back to Navy. The man's begun to outgrow this town as well, it seems. By choice or not, he was being flung from one side of the region to the other by the demands of the League. He wasn't gonna last here forever. But for now, it seemed he was hanging in there.[break][break]

"What about you, though? How have things been since I left? You sure you can hold down everything without me? Bet not, huh?" Her raw confidence is a sight to behold, emboldened by newfound purpose. If he thought she was cheeky before, well... [break][break]

“How’s the song go? Same old story, same old song and dance. Eternatus is still sound asleep, as far as I can tell.” His eyes turn from the green to the blue. Beneath these waters, beyond a rift, the poison dragon slumbers. “No big incidents with the dead things from the rift. Bodies gotta dry up eventually. He’s running out of dead Pokemon.” And that makes him sigh in relief.[break][break]
“It’d take another big battle to stir things up around here.” Apprehension leaks into his voice. There’s no avoiding this. He’s terrible at hiding things. Always has been. Loose lips sink ships, but she’ll find out within a day anyway.[break][break]
“An island’s showed up north of here, along the 105. Big one. Not just a mirage island, far as I can tell. It’s been here for about two weeks. League’s getting ready to try and crack the place open. There’s a vault my crew hasn’t been able to breach.” Standing up, his gaze turns north. “Which means Rocket’s spies know, too. Probably gonna be another battle.”[break][break]
Turning back to Tsubaki, he looks into her eyes. Searches them. Tries to see what she makes of all that.[break][break]
“You’re an adult, Baki. What are you gonna do with all that info?”

Suddenly she's all business.[break][break]

She turns to Ayame, one of her most trustworthy partners. The venerable tree has lived through countless wars defending her home. Though that forest still eludes her, stolen away by Rocket, she's been fighting this conflict for a while in some form. Fighting for home. Things don't really change, they just take different shapes...[break][break]

"Well... Dewford's still home, so if they're that close... we gotta defend! [break][break]

"All I've got is a hundred different ways to fight. Fighting's all I know. If there's a battle on the horizon, then it's all I can do to lend my strength. [break][break]

"Aya's got my back, don't'cha girl?" [break][break]

She smiles at her prized Venusaur. That flower isn't the largest Venusaur she's ever seen for nothing. The pokemon's flower grows larger with every battle won, reaching its limit only when she's beaten down, when she hits her limit. A true alpha specimen, in this girl's seventy or so years she hasn't stopped growing yet.[break][break]

“Baki…” His voice trails off. Anything he says will make him a hypocrite. Grief does funny things to people. “Be careful.” It’s hard to hide the grief in his voice. “Just. Be careful. We’re dealing with dangerous people. Not just Rocket. We’ve—there’s bad apples on both sides.” He struggles with how much to tell her. Knowing too much could put her life in danger. After everything Matias Silph has done, he wouldn’t put it past that man to harm a teenage girl.[break][break]
“Not gonna tell you to sit this one out. Arceus knows I need your help. Just…fuck.” He’s amazed he’s held himself together this long. Seeing her lets him pretend everything is normal, like Ironsides, Olivier, and the rest are still here. They’re not. Vortigern’s injured, most of his old mainstays are gone, and they’re calling on him to fight. He does need her…[break][break]
But the thought of sending her off to fight in the company the League keeps hurts his soul.

She responds in a stern tone, standing up and clenching her hands together.[break][break]

"I've been at this for a long time, Navy. Long enough to know there's bad people on either side of this fight. There's no winners, but there's a clear choice when it comes to objectives." [break][break]

She's never been this upfront with him before. Maybe once or twice, but usually there's some sort of ironic detachment behind it. Tongue like a thorn, to compliment a beautiful rose.[break][break]

But not this time.[break][break]

"People can be assholes. But one faction burnt down my hometown, the other tried to save it. I know what side's worth staying on, and I know to watch my back. There's plenty of unsavory guys in Rocket too, y'know?"[break][break]

That assurance rings hollow. [break][break]

How many times has she been a casualty of battle so far, both here and back home? Has she been wounded more by League or Rocket by now? It's impossible to keep track, there's too many to count. She's not quite a woman, but she's already got enough scars to last a lifetime. [break][break]

Still, if it means preventing what happened to Saffron from happening again here...[break][break]

"I'll be careful."[break][break]

She almost wants to add, "like always". But that won't inspire confidence, given her track record. Instead, the only thing she has to confince him is the conviction in her eyes. In Ayame's eyes, that pokemon sharing her confidence in battle, her desire to protect her home. This is all they've got now, the both of them.[break][break]

He'd know nothing he could say would convince them otherwise.[break][break]

What keeps him from pushing this further, more than anything, is a burning memory. He remembers what it was like to be her age. Staying on top of everything, working hard so others could hardly work. They’re similar. She’s more like him than Gabe.[break][break]
“Arceus, I hate when you talk like that.” He admits through gently gritted teeth. “But don’t stop. Just. Palkia on a pogo, you’ve grown up too quick.”[break][break]
“You’re right though. Rocket acts like they’re honest. How true can that be when most of Rocket doesn’t even know what Rocket as a whole’s fighting for, huh?” He’s heard a dozen answers from a dozen people, Tsubaki included. Maybe that, in and of itself, is an answer. They’re there to support their own interests.[break][break]
But then, how are they any different from the League?[break][break]
“Probably just gonna talk in circles if we keep talking about this.” He turns away, looking back to the town. Almost as an afterthought, he adds,
“Ironsides died.”

Memories of riding that giant metal bird come rushing back. The lift of his strong wings. His impenetrable body. The wind in her hair, as he moved so freely. [break][break]

Alive one moment, and now all of that was gone...[break][break]

"I know what it's like, to lose someone..."[break][break]

Saying anything else now would be selfish, disrespectful. [break][break]

She bows her head, says her prayer to the Skarmory that served as Navy's armor for so long. It's thanks to him that Navy was still around, and for that, she would remember him forever.[break][break]

"... I can't bear the thought of anyone else going through something like that. That's why Rocket's gotta be stopped, cause they keep doing things like this."[break][break]

She stares at the ground. The brim of her hat blocks her eyes from view, but she's clearly choked up.[break][break]

When Groudon hit the core, it dynamaxed Vortigern.” Shrugging away from her touch, he paces. It is Vortigern’s lumbering, frustrated walk. Since their souls were linked, he has walked like that. Aggressively. Beneath his skin lurks a dragon’s rage.[break][break]
“How fucked is it that the only thing that helped me out was my Arceus damned enemy.” But she’s right. He knows she’s right. He needs to hear her say that. The League really doesn’t give a damn about this town. Not really. It’s a number on a page, another blip on the radar until Eternatus becomes everyone’s problem.[break][break]
But not to him. That’s why he doesn’t climb up to Ever Grande and perch with the other dragons. He’s king of the ground. Something that lives with soil beneath his feet. That’s a Garchomp’s nature.[break][break]
“Nobody’s gonna defend this town but us. Not when the dust settles. They’ll all go home. Back to civilization.” He sighs. Reaching up, he pets Ayame on her nose. “We got time before everyone’s shipped out. They’ll probably start with the calls before the sun goes down.”[break][break]
With somber eyes, he talks about something entirely different. Far less severe. Nothing to do with the shadows of dead pokemon or fools wearing the crowns of kings.[break][break]
“Not gonna believe this, but Dewford got a boba spot while you were gone.”
