Her words brought him pause. It wasn't until then that he hadn't really thought about it. The events of the Cave of Origin had plagued many, and he was far from the only person who had been locked up in the Med Bay. Grigori Sokolov came to mind first. And the events of Route 105 only had wracked up more bodies for their medical staff to heal.

[break][break] "Not as long as expected," he said at least. "But that's thanks to bryan delarosa. I'm fortunate to have a good relationship with him." There was a slight quirk of the lips at this, some affection that was brought into his eyes that seemed to melt away the coldness from his expression. Both figuratively and literally. "As he should — I recruited him, after all."

[break][break] He shook his head to clear his thoughts and continued to speak, his eyes shifting this time towards his hands. He stares at his palms, focused on the barely healing cuts that lanced through his palms.

[break][break] "After the initial exposure - " He meant, of course, the events of the Cave of Origin. "I spent several days in the medbay. Half was because I was frought with fever, but the other half was so our scientists could run tests."

[break][break] A soft laugh escaped him but it sounded more heartbroken than not.

Treason didn't mean the same thing to her that it meant to him. Treason was a flaunting of the power structure they'd all willingly bound themselves to, an arrogant posturing that rules and laws didn't apply to them the way they did to everyone else.[break][break]

She had nothing but contempt for such individuals, but that resentment was nothing compared to the HATRED that burned within jayden cross.[break][break]

"Did he take advantage of your time in the medbay?" she surmised, struggling to connect the two thoughts. "Did he attack you?"[break][break]

This explanation seemed incomplete, however. It wasn't typical of Isaac Merlo to strike from the shadows in such a way; he wasn't an opportunist the way that she was.

What did Isaac Merlo have to do with anything? He had to do with everything.

[break][break] In some ways, he symbolized the reason why The Cursed existed in the first place.

[break][break] "He attacked us," Jayden growled, lips curled into a snarl. His eyes blistered blue, but it was not contempt or hatred for Elisabeth Fiorelli that rose in his eyes. It was for all the others. Remiel Calcifet. CIAN MAHER. Isaac Merlo. "He hurt us."

[break][break] Us. Rocket. Us. Chien Pao and him. Us. Family.

[break][break] "When he chose the likes of the League - of Caleb Harcourt - over his own damned family."

[break][break] The events of the Med Bay had been public knowledge. The wore Jayden had tore away from all of the constrains that had been placed upon him, how he had recklessly run into the fray and tried to fight off both Caleb and Isaac, without any worry for his own life. The way that he had been stabbed subsequently, had nearly died.

[break][break] Had failed.

[break][break] Jayden closed his eyes painfully then, pressing a palm to his eyes. When he opened them again, his eyes were amethyst once more.

[break][break] "What about you? How long did it take? For it to stop... hurting."

[break][break] He meant all of it. The recovery, the avatarship, the pain that swelled in his heart again and again when he thought about all the people who'd stabbed him — both literally and metaphorically.

He spat and hissed with an almost feline fury, and Elisabeth couldn't help but recall the way his patron had behaved in the Cave of Origin, seething with its own HATRED.[break][break]

She was no stranger to strong emotion, but here, she was a mere observer to his storm of tumult. She held no great opinion of either Isaac Merlo or Caleb Harcourt, save for mild irritation at them both that could exacerbate, depending. Yet the vehemence of the admin's animosity towards both traitors emanated from him in waves, visible in the blistering blue of his eyes and the grit of his teeth.[break][break]

Elisabeth, however, felt oddly calm.[break][break]

Pity, she realized belatedly. It was pity for him that she felt, not apathy.[break][break]

"Sometimes I think we were always hurting," she heard herself say, "and that's why the Ruinous Beasts chose us."[break][break]

It was not what he wanted to hear, but it was the truth that she believed.[break][break]

"It doesn't stop hurting, Cross, because the agony is by design. We draw power from the ugliest parts of ourselves."

[break][break] He knew, within his heart of hearts, that Elisabeth Fiorelli was right. There was a reason that they had been chosen by the Ruinous Beasts who staked a claim on them. Perhaps they had been watching, looking, observing for them the whole time. Perhaps all the decisions they had made - or not made - in their life had somehow led to this point.

[break][break] Jayden knew all of this, yet he could not help the ache that grew in his chest at the reminder.

[break][break] 'You were chosen' suddenly seemed synonymous with 'You were cursed'.

[break][break] "So we do," he murmured in response, glancing down at his hand. Staring down at his palm, he observed the creases of his pale skin which - at the start of their training - had been smooth and soft to the touch. Now, it was marred by ice crystals and blood that peaked through the surface, almost as if it was a reminder of the suffering he wielded.

[break][break] His fingers curled into a fist, blood spreading through his palm, and he glanced up at her just as HATRED reshaped into crystal ice, flashing into the pointed end of a spear.

[break][break] "Then I shall learn to wield it, so the world may know my suffering too."
