THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]When she'd heard of the Steel-type Ultra Beasts that could be found in the Ultra Crater, Aurelie thought immediately of jack wainwright, who she knew relished new adventures and Steel-type Pokemon alike. Now, after stepping through the portal, she paused to stare up at the sky. Instead of the familiar blue of their world or the steel-grey of the Mechanical Kingdom, the sky here shone an unearthly lemon-yellow.

"Well, we're definitely not in Lilycove anymore," the redhead quipped, pulling her gaze away to survey the rest of their surroundings.

The two of them had emerged along the edge of a dense, verdant jungle. Looking more closely, Aurelie noticed that the jungle floor was covered with leaves of an oddly rectangular shape, making them look like pages from a book. White-and-red flowers with sharp, blade-like points grew from the trees, at once elegant and ominous-looking.

In the other direction, the level ground was soon interrupted by a series of huge craters. Surprisingly, in the center of the craters grew incongruous bright-green fields. The landscape was dotted with geysers, which periodically shot bursts of steam into the already hazy air.

Eyeing the jungle speculatively, Aurelie eventually shook her head. "Looks like I'm going to need to forge myself a new machete, if we come back here," she muttered, frowning as she remembered how she'd lost it while falling through the fetid swamp.

Eventually, she shook her head to clear it and pointed at the nearest crater. "But for now, since we're machete-less, let's head over there," the redhead suggested. Shouldering her backpack, she started to march in that direction.

The frown on Aurelie's face deepened as she craned her neck and peered into the depths of the crater. "Are those...stalks of bamboo at the bottom?" she asked, squinting her single eye for a better look. "With ribbons on them? And carvings too? They look a little like weird hieroglyphics or magic sigils..."

A sense of wonder filled Jack as they stepped into the strange realm with its lemon-yellow sky and otherworldly flora. It was a reminder of why Jack was so passionate about travel and exploration: not for the blog, or to take photos, but for the simple wonder of it all. With all the awful things that had happened or were happening, for a solitary moment he felt at peace.[break][break]

Jack reached out toward Aurelie as she assessed their surroundings and gently caressed her hand with the edge of his finger before looking to where she had indicated down within the crater.[break][break]

"What do you think, little one, probably some interesting stuff down there, yeah?" Jack asked his Magearna, trying to make good on his and Aurelie's promise to show it a life of love and friendship. The mechanical pokemon puttered to the edge of the crater and peered over with interest.[break][break]

Aurelie had them marching down a narrow switchback into the crater, forming a single-file line as the twisted down a precariously narrow ledge. Jack had thought about flying down on Poe's back but changed his mind when they were unable to find a suitable landing site from their vantage point at the rim of the crater. So instead he focused his gaze on the path ahead, taking the time to steal a glance at Aurelie's ass as she led them downward. When the reached the bottom, his Magearna let out a tinny little cheer, celebrating their success.[break][break]

"Keep a lookout," Jack asked the Magearna as he and Aurelie began to examine the strange bamboo stalks. Jack was silent for awhile, save for the occasional thoughtful noise while he passed between the stalks.[break][break]

"Looks like they all say the same thing, love," Jack said, pitching his voice low so as not to carry further than he intended. "It's hard to make out with how ornate the script it, but it looks like it says something about the gift of a seaborne shell?"[break][break]

Jack squinted and turned his head from side to side, but all it managed to do is give him a headache. Instead walked to Aurelie's side and said, "I can't figure it out. What do you think?"

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]As Jack came over toward her, Aurelie absentmindedly slid an arm about his waist and leaned her cheek against his as they studied the elaborately carved bamboo stalks side-by-side. She too squinted at the carvings and tilted her head from side to side, as if that might give her deeper insight into their meaning. At last, she too shook her head and laughed.

"I think you're right, but I don't think I would even have seen the sea-borne shell part until after you mentioned it," the redhead admitted. "But now that you pointed out, I do see it. I don't understand what it means, but I see it."

Who had carved these bamboo stalks? Who would even be accepting this gift, if they had a sea-borne shell to offer? What would happen if they brought one here?

"We should see if the other craters have strange things like this too," she suggested, disentangling herself from Jack. "Not that we can be sure what is or isn't strange in a world like this. But still, bamboo stalks with a message asking for a gift—that's a new one for me!"

Shaking her head and chuckling wryly, Aurelie cast one last glance at the curiously carved bamboo stalks and then started walking back up toward the lip of the crater. A bright glint in the plants growing inside the crater caught her eye suddenly, and she bent forward to look. It took Aurelie a moment to recognize what she was seeing, but when she did, she let out a delighted little cry.

"Oh, Jack! You have to come see this!" she exclaimed, waving him over. "It's too adorable for words!"

Slowly moving through the foliage was a baby Celesteela, with a small conical body and tiny stalk-like arms on each side. It wafted uncertainly up into the air and came to a stop before Aurelie, impeding her progress to the crater's edge. Behind it, she saw another Celesteela peering through the brush, and another still past that one.

"Oh, Arceus, they're so cute!" she cooed happily. Instinctively, she reached out a hand to touch the top of its head, before suddenly remembering their adventures in the Mechanical Kingdom. Specifically, the time she'd called down the mechanical Corviknight upon them because she'd touched something she shouldn't have.

Quickly, Aurelie drew back her hand. "Can you let us past you, please?" she cooed instead to the little Pokemon. "Any chance you could move just slightly off to the side so we don't step on you, little ones?"

Aurelie's warm body pressed against him as they examined the strange writing reminded him of the joy she brought to his life. He had traveled solo so much for his blog that sometimes every trip felt like work. But these trips to strange realms with her renewed his passion for adventure that had been dwindling away. For what seemed like the hundredth time, he silently thanked Arceus for her presence.[break][break]

When she called him over to see the baby Celesteela, Jack nearly gasped in amazement as he noticed a whole horde of them hidden in the foliage or buried partially in the ground. His Magearna chattered excitedly as it peeked out from behind Aurelie's legs and Jack couldn't help but smile. He waited for a bit as Aurelie's pleas for them to move aside went unheard before he decided to forge ahead.[break][break]

"Those other craters aren't going to explore themselves," he murmured to the Celesteela by way of apology as he stepped gingerly between them, careful not to disturb them. Apparently not careful enough as he felt his foot brush against what he thought was a stone protruding slightly from the ground. The baby Celesteela's high-pitched alarm pierced the air, sounding like pressurized steam escaping from a narrow vent. Memories of being chased by the gigantic Corviknight in the Mechanical Kingdom immediately flashed in his mind, sending him running for the cover of a dense clump of foliage at the same time as Aurelie while his stomach felt like a chunk of never-melt ice had settled into it.[break][break]

Only seconds later a cadre of Kartana arrived to investigate, their sharp limbs seeming to cut event the air as they passed. Jack was careful to control his breathing as the investigated the field of now quiet Celesteela babies. In the silence it was easy to hear the human-like speech of the Kartana, strangely familiar yet wholly incomprehensible to him. He shot an inquistive glance at Aurelie, wondering if she was hearing the same thing.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie nearly jumped in the air when Jack's seemingly harmless step forward past the baby Celesteela on the ground ended up disturbing another Celesteela that neither of them had even known was there. She definitely jumped and clapped her hands over her ears when it started letting out a high-pitched, forceful shriek that blared through the air as piercingly as any fire alarm.

Though her reflexes weren't quite as fast as Jack's, she didn't hesitate to dive under cover behind him after the Celesteelas' alarm. Aurelie only barely made it into hiding before the squad of Kartana arrived. As they patrolled the area, slashing at bamboo stalks and grass to find the intruders who had set off the Celesteelas, she found herself utterly captivated by the white, sharp-bodied Pokemon.

The red-haired smith nudged Jack excitedly, her single eye aglow with unabashed fascination. One of the Kartana passed by only three feet or so from where they were crouched and, surprising both of them, spoke a few words in what sounded like a human tongue. The Kartanas searched around a few minutes more while the baby Celesteelas subsided, and Aurelie drank in every second of watching them move and wield their blades.

Finally, after what seemed like an hour—though it had probably been only about ten minutes—the squad of Kartanas finally left. Aurelie dared poke her head just a few inches out of the foliage to watch where they headed, but they were gone too quickly for her to follow their movements. She sighed, but happily.

"Did you see those Pokemon? Weren't they wonderful?" the red-haired smith enthused to Jack. "I wish I could've seen where they came from! I want one of them, if we can find them again. I want to befriend it and learn its style of swordsmanship and spar with it..."

Then, Aurelie rapidly shook her head, as if to clear it of daydreams. "But...maybe not now. You're right, those other craters aren't going to explore themselves. And it looks clear out there now, as long as we watch where we put our feet in case we run into more of those cute little baby Celesteelas."

Standing up from their hiding spot, the redhead looked around cautiously before walking out into the open. Taking Jack's hand again, they walked to the edge of the crater and saw the footprints of where the Kartanas had either come or gone. They led toward the next nearest crater.

As they approached this next one, Aurelie noticed the bamboo stalks grew far taller here than they had in the first one. The bamboo here stretched almost thirty feet in the air, as high as a three-story house. And there was a faint scent in the air, an acrid tang to the air like insectile scent trails or plant venom.

This time, when she spoke to Jack, her voice was a low, nervous whisper. "Do you feel like there's something watching us from inside that crater? Something unfriendly, not like those baby Celesteelas..."

Here he was still panting from nervousness over the squad of Kartana and Aurelie was gushing over how cool the pokemon are. He couldn't help but laugh as they got to their feet.[break][break]

"Wonderful is certainly one word for them, love," Jack grinned at her as they ascended the steep wall of the crater. "I'll leave the befriending to you, but if you do end up making friends with one then I'd love to watch you spar. I'm sure Harpe wouldn't mind being your sword and shield for otherworldly ultra beast sparring."[break][break]

He was only partly joking. Since he had met Aurelie while sparring at that renaissance faire a few years ago, his Aegislash seemed enamored with the red-haired smith. Maybe it was her love of Steel-type pokemon or the fact that she was a metalsmith but Jack thought that besides himself, she was probably the only other person who could wield the pokemon without him trying to siphon her life force.[break][break]

They fell quiet as the approached into the next crater, though Aurelie soon pointed out what he was thinking. "There's definitely something watching us," he agreed as he scanned the crater for any signs of movement.[break][break]

"Alright, little one. Let's give you a little break while we check out the next crater," Jack said soothingly as he returned the Magearna to its pokeball. He released his Iron Moth, thankful for the imposing pokemon as they began their descent into the crater.[break][break]

His skin prickled and he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched as they explored within the bamboo. Things would move in the corner of his vision but when he turned, he always found nothing. He stuck close to Aurelie as they explored and finally relaxed enough to read the inscription on another bamboo stalk; this crater seemed to want the gift of a stone bowl. When he leaned back from the inscription to ask Aurelie if she was seeing the same message, he noticed the eyes staring at them through the thick stalks of bamboo.[break][break]

Before he could even open his mouth, the enormous Scyther was buzzing toward them.

I'm so glad he's here with me, she thought as she lightheartedly mused aloud that she'd never thought to use an Aegislash in a friendly spar, but it might be needed against a fierce Ultra Beast. She had her own, but if Jack was offering his...

All pleasant thoughts of swordplay and spending more time with Jack and his Pokemon fled her mind, though, when they heard the deafening buzz while studying the inscriptions on this crater's bamboo stalks. Aurelie looked up in surprise and then gasped in shock when she spotted the enormous Scyther flying straight at them.

"How is this possible? That thing looks like it's seven or eight feet tall!" she breathed, her single eye wide with alarm. "We've got to get away from that before it finds us!"

Aurelie ducked down and scrambled to the right to dodge the incoming Scyther, inadvertently dragging the still-linked Jack along behind her. Though he wasn't exactly fighting her, his presence slowed her down enough that she nearly tripped over her own feet. She stumbled to a stop and then cried out in shock when she realized they'd pulled up short in front of a waiting crowd of Joltiks and Galvantulas.

Jack pulled her backward just in time to avoid being struck by the spray of sparking, electrified threads the Galvantulas shot at them both. The redhead leaned against him heavily, huffing for breath. "From bad to worse! I almost wonder if that Scyther was herding us over here!

"And seriously, what in Arceus' name are they eating here?" she added, looking wildly from the buzzing Scyther to the bright-yellow Galvantulas, readying themselves to fire another ELECTROWEB. "I think I've seen Ponyta smaller than these bugs!"

But a faint smile crept over her face as she eyed the Electric-type bugs. Acting fast, Aurelie reached for a Pokeball and brought out her Charizard, which landed in the crater with a burst of flame and a flap of its mighty wings. If I remember my type weaknesses correctly...and if this works like it did in the lab... She took a deep breath and activated the tera orb nestled in one pocket.

Almost at once, the Charizard's skin changed from fiery orange to take on the appearance of a sparkling, intricately faceted gemstone that glistened spectacularly in the odd, otherworldly light. A strange crown emerged from the Pokemon's draconic head, resembling a small, Earth-like globe, of all things.

As if emboldened by its transformation, the glittering, jewel-like Charizard shouldered them aside and lumbered forward to loom protectively between the trainers and the Galvantulas. When the latter shot another torrent of electrified silk, the Charizard carelessly withstood the attack, utterly untouched by the high voltage and energy. Aurelie sighed in relief.

"Yessssss!" she exulted from behind her Pokemon, joyfully punching the air. "Now, go get them!" The Charizard readily and ferociously obliged with a searing blast of flame.

Even in the heat of the moment, Jack was impressed by the Charizard's terastalization and Aurelie's quick thinking. Even though he had witnessed the phenomenon in the swamp cavern before escaping from the Megalopolans, seeing it up close and person still caught his breath.[break][break]

While Aurelie and her Charizard took the lead, Jack did the clean up duty. Fluttering its wings with mechanical precision, Iron Moth used Charizard for cover while crashing into any Galvantulas that the Flame Pokemon's attacks missed. The fury of the battle was enough to draw even more attention and the insectoid buzzing and chittering only intensified around them.[break][break]

"Let's go," Jack tugged on Aurelie's sleeve as their pokemon cleared a path in front of them. He didn't need to look behind him to know the Scyther was close; the sound of bamboo being sliced away and the loud buzz of wings told him everything he needed.[break][break]

Jack sprinted as quickly as he could while weaving between jungle foliage and dodging around where Charizard and Iron Moth were intercepting attackers. Spotting a break in the heavy bamboo ahead, he rushed forward into an open field of low, flowering plants. As his momentum carried him out into the field, heavy flowers burst open in a spray of pollen that sent him into a fit of coughing. When the wracking coughs finally subsided, he noticed they were no longer being pursued.[break][break]

"Guess we were too quick for them," he croaked to Aurelie before starting another round of coughing.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie followed behind Jack a little more slowly, glancing back every now and then with a burst of pride to watch as her Charizard and his Iron Moth successfully fought off the gigantic Galvantulas. Then she gulped nervously as the Scyther zeroed back in on them, wielding its twin blades like scythes, and turned around to catch up with Jack as he sprinted forward.

Lagging behind him as she was, she got a little advance warning about the sudden burst of pollen that a cluster of flowers sprayed right into Jack's face. Aurelie didn't get a full faceful like he did, but she still breathed in enough to make her nose run and her eye water. Even this didn't slow either of them down, though, until they made it deeper into the field.

"I...clearly need to...take up jogging or something," the redhead panted breathlessly as they finally came to a stop. She clutched at her side, where a stitch was developing, and grinned self-deprecatingly. "I spend all my time…standing around...hammering on things, so I'm definitely the one...who'd get eaten by an angry Ursaluna."

She wiped at her nose, which was definitely dripping now, and then sneezed violently. Beside her, Jack let out another series of hacking coughs. As her vision cleared, Aurelie noticed both of their shirts were dotted with tiny specks, which—when she brushed impatiently at her shoulder—turned out to be seeds.

The stubborn things clung to the fabric and even her skin, and Aurelie could feel her muscles going weak and sluggish. "What the heck was that pollen?" she groaned, shaking her head with sudden weariness.

"Jack, let's get out of here," she mumbled, reaching for his hand and looking around muzzily for the portal back into their world. Her legs and feet felt like iron as she took a slow, shaky step, pulling him along. "We're in no shape to keep going, let alone deal with something else like that Scyther. Arceus, this place is crazy."
