he's not nearly insightful enough to gleam the reasoning behind Elisabeth Fiorelli's discomfort. he assumes it's related to not wanting to further entangle herself with him, or how she avoids being vulnerable even when he is.[break][break]

"I didn't say you were invited," she snapped at him, the reflex reminiscent of an Arbok flaring its hood in warning. She turned away with a slight huff, adding begrudgingly, "To be honest, I don't invite anyone over in general. I prefer solitude."[break][break]

Though that wasn't true, was it? It would be easier if it was, she thought, and perhaps that's why she tried to believe this lie so terribly.[break][break]

As she debated how to navigate his question, an unexpected diversion distracted her from her indecision.[break][break]

The Poochyena barked up at her, paws reaching up for the hem of her hoodie, and she flinched, stumbling back in audible surprise.[break][break]

"I've never had dogs," she explained, faintly embarrassed by the suddenness of her reaction. "Leafeons, I suppose? But they're calmer."[break][break]

no matter how many times Elisabeth Fiorelli may snap at him, his reaction stays consistent with an indifferent stare and an occasional chuckle should it be amusing. which it is this time, considering her surprise when his poochyena barks.[break][break]

coming to her aid, he scoops the dog up, carrying it with one arm like one would a baby.[break][break]

"they're not usually this annoying but i haven't had time to train this one yet."[break][break]

he conveniently leaves out how the poochyena is part of kyle lopez's litter and how the top champion had gifted it to him.[break][break]

poochyena flops as best it can as it tries to give matias many licks. he tilts his head to the side, letting it lick his cheek.[break][break]

"you can pet it if you want."

Did she want to? It didn't feel like a question so much as a thing a normal person was expected to do. The canine Pokemon licked Matias's face again, and Elisabeth hesitantly reached a hand towards it, half-concerned it might bite her.[break][break]

Weren't dogs supposed to be good judges of character? That didn't bode well for her, really.[break][break]

Though she supposed the same could be said of Matias.[break][break]

"Oh, it's soft," she commented, for some reason surprised by this revelation as she pet the Poochyena behind the ears. "I don't know why, but I never pictured you having Pokemon like this."[break][break]

He seemed like someone who focused on might and power, not companionship. But more and more, she seemed to think he craved the latter.

it will surprise her to know that he owns every pokemon, or at least one of every species. the pokemon that roam around outside under the guise of being wild are all his, though of course some are properly wild and have no connection to him. those often end up being training bait, however.[break][break]

"it's soft until the little shit decides to run around in mud, so best enjoy it while you can."[break][break]

poochyena seems oblivious to the comments or at least doesn't care enough to react. it doesn't turn to bite Elisabeth Fiorelli, instead, it tilts its head further toward her, leaning into her hand.[break][break]

"i don't usually care for my pokemon the same way others do. i was taught to see them as tools. i'm sure you're the same."[break][break]

She went quiet for awhile, scratching the Poochyena under the chin before replying.[break][break]

”I used to take very good care of my Pokémon, actually,” she said at last. ”I often prefer them to people if I’m to be honest.”[break][break]

But she had to learn to see them differently. She had been forced to regard them as weapons for her own survival, and as expandable allies in service to that end.[break][break]

The briefest recollection of tending her flower shop with her mildest-mannered Grass-type Pokémon came and went, and her hand stilled in its motion, her expression turning wistful for something she couldn’t quite explain.[break][break]

”My first Pokémon was a Wurmple,” she said suddenly. ”I saved it from being shooed out of my mother’s garden and hid it with others in my closet. Imagine her surprise when she opened it and dozens of Beautifly flew out.”[break][break]

It was a fond memory, but a sad one just the same, and for that reason.[break][break]

”Daisy isn’t a terribly intimidating name for a weapon, is it?”

that checks out. he can imagine her in her own crafted isolation surrounded by many grass-types. he can also imagine the annoyance she would feel when said isolation is disrupted. that was essentially what had happened back in the cottage when he first visited, was it not?[break][break]

"Not the sanest way to get a woman's attention, no," she remarked drily, stepping back to allow the Poochyena room to dart away. She watched its receding form with an odd pensiveness, a hand losing itself in her blonde hair. "But it's maybe for the best, really. I don't have much use for the little one now."[break][break]

She'd avoided many of her Grass-types during the height of Wo-chien's influence on her, though she didn't know how much of that she wanted to admit to. It felt like all plantlife she touched withered with resentment, and after what happened with jayden cross's Roselia, she'd been afraid of learning what the results would be with her more fragile, flowery Pokemon.[break][break]

"For what it's worth, people have treated me and my Pokemon worse. You're just one drop in the bucket, I'm afraid."[break][break]

Her attempt at humor fell flat as she smiled wryly at him, the truth in her jest far too painfully evident to sound truly lighthearted.[break][break]

"Why are you apologizing now, anyway?"

odd as matias is not known for his apologies even when he's clearly in the wrong. even someone as kind and loving as Eva Morales has had to scrape by for years with the bare minimum, oftentimes with nothing at all.[break][break]

but as the years have gone by and as his sanity further deteriorates, apologies come easier for reasons unknown. perhaps Elisabeth Fiorelli simply has that privilege.[break][break]

"Mm." She frowned, worrying the hem of her sleeve between restless fingers. "I changed," she said finally. "Or, more accurately, I realized I had to change if I wanted to survive in this world."[break][break]

She'd coaxed an Oddish in her husband's estate to be her companion, hiding it from his prying eyes as she raised it and harvested its poison with the intent to kill. It had been strange at first, conflicting emotions fighting for dominance in her as she wondered if it was wrong to utilize an innocent Pokemon to commit such an unthinkable act.[break][break]

Then again, that had never stopped him from hurting her with his Emboar, either.[break][break]

"Power isn't something people just give you," she concluded, though she seemed disappointed by her own conclusion. "It's something you have to take for yourself."[break][break]

She glanced up at him, then back down at his leg, before she moved back towards the couch again.[break][break]

"It has to hurt to stand on that. Come here, then."

her conclusion disappoints him, too, as it's one he disagrees with to an extent.[break][break]

She misunderstood him, at first. As he settled beside her, relaxing in a way that seemed odd considering their circumstances, she thought he meant to ask her if she regretted trading personal contentment for power.[break][break]

"Sometimes," Elisabeth almost admitted, until he finished speaking. There were times she forgot how intimidating he could be, when he was like this with her; moments like this, with threats casually buried beneath idle conversation, she remembered how dangerous he really was.[break][break]

"I don't think I frighten you," she said evenly. It was a plain statement, a simple observation of what she presumed was an indisputable fact. Hadn't he implied as much about her ability, mere hours ago in front of Kyogre? "But I don't think it matters, if I regret the action or if I don't. What's done is done."[break][break]

A pause inserted itself before she ultimately gave into her curiosity.[break][break]

"Do you think I will regret it, then?"

a lie spun to protect himself, held together by a lifetime of struggles.[break][break]

Elisabeth Fiorelli's unreliability, her elusiveness, and the fact that she has two gods at her beck and call. he could take them all on a battlefield, the fighting is the easy part, but outside where each move is more nuanced and complex is where he falters and where she thrives.[break][break]

"i think you might if it proves to be your downfall. don't get me wrong, i'm not planning to contribute to it, but our circumstances will eventually play a factor."

It was natural to worry about their arrangement, she thought, but still the idea of him doing so startled her. Was it out of concern for her, or for himself?[break][break]

MATIAS SILPH did not seem like a man naturally inclined to worry, either way.[break][break]

"We're both survivors. If it comes to it, I know you will choose yourself, and I will choose me. That's all I need to know."[break][break]

She shrugged at her own declaration, finding it the obvious answer to any of his doubts. She had never lied to him about that part of her; whether or not he felt like her acquaintance was still worth the risk was up to him.[break][break]

Arrogance was the downfall of men like him, not caution.[break][break]

And her downfall, she knew, was always trusting men like him.[break][break]

"The League must want you to stay away from me," she prodded, tilting her head at him. Her leg dangled over the side of the couch, swaying restlessly. "Is that what this surveillance is for? Or is it something else."[break][break]

He had more to lose from this than she did.
