Though Josh felt Victor was being reckless, he at least had some common sense about him. Some dragons took weeks, even months, to break to the bridle. He had that issue with Kokusho, his Hydreigon, remembering the many times the three-headed dragon hurled him off, and to a painful landing at that. Though he didn't particularly enjoy being on a bucking Pokémon, he could handle it for a little bit if it meant calming it. A Hydreigon's heaving was downright painful, having immense weight to throw around and the cunning to throw it where it hurt the rider the most.

"I'm going to insist on it," Josh laid the law down. "Before you even think about reining up that Dragapult, I want us to fly on Sidewinder together. He's plenty big enough to seat both of us. And we go through the whole gauntlet." That included an ethereal jaunt. It was fast and quite uncomfortable for the time it lasted, but Victor had to be prepared if his own Dragapult took him there. It was the danger of riding a ghost Pokémon. Useful once mastered, but it came with the risk of being trapped in the ethereal plane and suffering a slow and frigid death if one fell off!

Victor bit back a sigh as he took in what Josh had to say. Well, at least the Gym leader wasn't trying to talk him out of it; he felt a swell of appreciation at Josh's insistence on helping. It was nice to know that someone was worried about the admittedly very reckless decision he was making, [break][break]

“Got it. Yeah, sounds good to me,” Victor replied, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. [break][break]

Karitei at least had the decency to float back to Victor's side after he had chastised her. He shot a suspicious glance at her; the Spiritomb's jagged smile just grew ever wider, [break][break]

“So, you looking for any Pokemon in particular out here? I'd hate to keep you out just for my sake.” [break][break]

And he would truly hate it; Josh probably had more important things to do than babysit him.

Victor's suggestion was well-placed. Riding a dragon was completely different than other flying Pokémon. With their high intelligence, reins were often more symbolic than practical, the trust between dragon and rider the true steering mechanism. If freya morningstar 's expertise was to be believed, trust was the only bridle a dragon was willing to accept. "I'd give it until at least the spring. Sidewinder's more than willing to let you take the helm, that much I'm certain of. But give your dragon a couple months or more to warm up to you."

Dragonair was also a good species to learn with, Their serpentine bodies got riders ready for the g-forces many dragons could subject their partners to, yet they were relatively easy to command. The most important thing for Victor to learn was what his dragon wanted out of their friendship. Friendship with Pokémon was a two-way street, but it was especially important for raising a dragon.

"I've got a couple dragon Pokémon that have eluded me over the months," Josh answered. "Think it's just Druddigon and Tyrantrum. If I can get those two, I should have one of every saddle-worthy common dragon Pokémon at Mauville Gym."

Victor nodded in acknowledgment of Josh's suggestion. It seemed perfectly reasonable, all things considered; if he could keep a low profile, and maybe work on getting the Dragapult to warm up to him, maybe they could establish a strong enough rapport by the time the icy clutches of winter loosened their grip on the region. Though, another thought wormed it's way into the older man's anxious little brain; was he really capable of taming a dragon? [break][break]

“I'll keep an eye out,” Victor replied earnestly. As Valoo floated effortlessly through the air, Victor squinted at the outcroppings of the Sky Pillar, keeping an eye out for either Dragon Pokemon the Gym Leader had mentioned. His eyes still scanning about the place with narrow focus, he called back to Josh, [break][break]

“So, uh, I know your specialty involves riding Pokemon, but would you happen to know anyone who specializes in Dragon-type Pokemon?” He glanced back at the Gym Leader, trying to sound as casual as possible and not like an idiot getting in way over his head, “You know, just as a point of reference.”

The two soared higher and higher, Resheph and Valoo taking them up floor after floor while keeping an eye out for more dragon Pokémon. He looked for a Druddigon or Tyrantrum, but did not seem to be able to locate either one. Two smaller flying-type fled in the ascending serpents' wake. "Getting the hang of controlling a dragon yet?" Josh asked Victor, wondering how much of it was his student manually controlling Valoo and how much of it was Valoo on autopilot.

"The specialties overlap," Josh answered Victor as they continued to soar higher. They had to be fifty stories in the air by now, yet the tower stretched way higher. It seemed to touch the heavens. "I know a lot about dragon Pokémon by virtue of them being fast. But I can recommend a couple people to you. Councilwoman freya morningstar is Hoenn's authority on dragon Pokémon. I do have to warn you, though... it might just be me because of how I don't give dragons the special treatment she wants, but she's really... aloof and unapproachable to me." That may well have been a misconception to be shattered at the Gym Leader meetup that Navy had planned in the near future. "If you want someone more approachable, try Navy . Though he calls himself a fighting-type specialist, he loves dragon Pokémon, too."

Truth be told, Valoo really was putting in most of the work, idly drifting alongside Josh and Resheph, and Victor felt a pang of guilt at the realization. He took a little more direct control over the reins, gently tugging back to encourage the Drampa into a slow ascent. If nothing else, the pace felt almost leisurely in comparison to his ride with Pazuzu. [break][break]

Victor's ears perked up at the mention of the specialists Josh recommended. Hoenn's authority on dragon Pokemon seemed like a good place to start; aloof or no, it was the knowledge that was most important to Victor. He kept in mind the fighting-specialist as well, committing both of their names to memory, [break][break]

“Thanks, I'll keep 'em in mind,” Victor replied with a smile, “Is there any specific advice you've got for me? Other than the specifics regarding the Dragapult, I mean.”

"Dragons are... really intelligent compared to other Pokémon," Josh answered. "Not every dragon might want to be controlled with reins. Not every dragon might want to wear a saddle. You might have to ride one bareback. It's important to be flexible with them and treat them more like a friend than a pet. Almost like you would another person." He had to deal with that for a long time with Kokusho, not realizing the Hydreigon did not like having halters pulling on his side heads. "But above all, be patient with them. Riding a dragon is a privilege, and a rewarding one at that. You have to earn it."

The two of them continued to rise higher up, Josh noticing a Gabite resting against one of the Sky Pillar's columns. "Not catching that Gabite?" he asked. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a dragon that's a smoother ride than a Garchomp, long as you can handle the speed." They were some of the most rewarding dragons to pilot, capable of exceeding supersonic speed easily. They were dangerous to fly on, controlling more like an airplane than a traditional dragon. Garchomp were one of the few Pokémon where stalling was a real concern. For those inclined in aviation, though, they were among the most rewarding of dragons to hop onto. One would be hard pressed to find a dragon that had the raw speed a Garchomp.

Victor hummed thoughtfully in response. The levels of intelligence and power that draconic Pokemon possessed were the stuff of legends. Cultures all over the world revered them as symbols of strength and held them as beings to be revered; it was no surprise that working with them required a healthy degree of respect for them as equals, [break][break]

“I understand,” Victor replied with complete sincerity, “They're powerful Pokemon. I think someone would have to be pretty dense to try and enter a partnership with one without respecting that.” [break][break]

And respect the Dragapult he would, for it's prowess would be something to shelter himself against whatever storms the region had to throw his way in the future. [break][break]

“Ah, no thanks. It's not a bad Pokemon, by any means, but I find myself drawn towards the more... strange? Ethereal, maybe? I have something of a fascination with the otherworldly, truth be told.” [break][break]

"Not just that, but it's really important to observe the personalities of dragon Pokémon and make adjustments, especially when they're newer to your team," Josh added. "Don't be afraid to pamper them, but make sure you do your best to get them to understand that the relationship is a two-way street. I've seen some trainers be 'ruled' by their dragon Pokémon before. It's really important that you don't let that happen."

While raising dragons was incredibly rewarding, they were also oft fickle. Josh was very fortunate that many of his dragon Pokémon were cooperative and eventually willing to serve as fast and powerful steeds.

The interest in the ethereal made Josh wonder why Victor would come to the Spear Pillar. "If you came here for a Dragapult specifically, then congratulations on it. But if you're looking for more otherworldly Pokémon, the Mount Pyre area might be better for you. So you're more looking for psychic, ghost, or fairy-type Pokémon?" he asked to confirm. All of those types were also tricky to raise, making the Gym Leader ever more visibly worried.

Would Victor raise his Pokémon, or would they raise him?
