Traveling to the remote Pacifidlog Town was not something that Victor would have ever considered doing in years past, but recent events had convinced him that this was something he needed to do. [break][break]

In the last couple of months, he had found himself constantly thrown about in the whirling currents of fate, rescued by other, more capable trainers in the region several times over. He'd felt useless as he was bailed out of trouble time and time again, from a low stakes encounter with an injured Pokemon to matters of literal life and death. Victor felt a weariness that struck him to his core, a sickening sense of helplessness that was eating him from the inside out. [break][break]

So that's why he was here at the Sky Pillar, waiting outside of the structure for the arrival of someone he had quickly begun to consider a friend. He hated to impose on the Gym Leader, especially when he was dragging him out so far from Mauville, but Victor needed someone he could lean on one more time until he had the strength to truly stand on his own two feet. And besides, after his recent Pokemon riding lesson with the guy, the Gym Leader had been the one to advise Victor to get a flying Pokemon in the first place. So that's what he would do; find a Pokemon to carry him through the skies, and one that would be strong enough to keep Victor from ever finding himself a victim again.

The Sky Pillar was daunting. Once limited to Champions of Hoenn, the site had been reopened for the public to capture dragon Pokémon after Eva Morales and her Patron saved the region from being destroyed by a meteor impact. Now, it was one of the most dangerous, yet popular, places to hunt for dragon Pokémon.

A sound like a roaring engine, though not nearly as loud as that of a vehicle, would reach Victor's ears. If he were to turn around, he would see a Flygon zipping around the tower, getting closer to him as it descended. When it looked like the dragon was within attacking range, he would clearly be able to see the Gym Leader seated on the Pokémon's back. The young man touched down and waved to his friend.

"Howdy, Victor," Josh greeted as Verte waddled toward the Sky Pillar's large entrance. "If you didn't get to see many of my dragons at the Gym, this is Verte," he introduced the Flygon, the ground-type's wings fluttering just beneath the threshold of human hearing. "Why did you want to come out here? There are much better places to hunt for flying Pokémon that would be easier to raise."

The sound of the descending Flygon was not quite enough to make Victor jump, but after running into Josh's Garchomp in passing during their riding lesson, Victor had known to expect something similar when the Gym Leader arrived. He watched as the Flygon darted around the tower and smiled when he noticed Josh riding upon the dragon's back. He offered a wave in return as the Gym Leader touched down, [break][break]

“Hey Josh, thanks for meeting me out here. And nice to meet you, Verte,” Victor offered in greeting. [BREAK][break]

He felt a surge of sheepish embarrassment when Josh questioned his intentions for coming to the Sky Pillar. Yes, there were certainly places with easier to raise flying Pokemon, but that was only part of Victor's reason for being here. On the other hand, he couldn't just unload his pathetic sob story onto Josh; at best, it'd just make the younger man uncomfortable, and at worst, it might dissuade the Gym Leader from helping him at all. So Victor shrugged his shoulders in what he hoped looked like a casual gesture of confidence and replied, [break][break]

“I wanted to push myself, is all. Can't get any better as a trainer if I just let myself stagnate.” [break][break]

It wasn't entirely honest, but it certainly wasn't an outright lie either. Victor just hoped that the Gym Leader wouldn't call him out on it.

Josh wondered how Viktor got to the Sky Pillar in the first place, though he kept those thoughts to himself. He had enough questions for the newer Trainer. "Dragons are the most challenging flying Pokémon of all to train and ride on. They're highly intelligent and...they kinda follow their own rules." Verte's fake compound eyes shifted toward Victor, the Flygon's wings briefly disappearing into a chirp.

Josh shook head at Viktor's bravado. "If you're dead set on trying to tame and ride a dragon, I've brought some of mine with me. You'll find that though they control much the same, the feel you'll get of holding a dragon's reins is very different." That was only half-true; serpentine dragons had a totally different feel to them.

As he neared the entrance of the Sky Pillar, Victor paid no heed to the Ghost Pokemon that had begun to flit in and out of the building. He considered Josh's words; getting to ride a dragon Pokemon first would be a good experience to have, but what if he actually was biting off more than he could chew? Victor shook his head as though to will the unpleasant thought away. No, he had to do this. He turned back to Josh and nodded, [break][break]

“Sure, I'd like to give it a try. It'd be good to get a feel for it.” [break][break]

With a flick of the wrist, he sent out one of his own Pokemon to accompany him on their journey. A Spiritomb emerged from a flash of red light, hovering slightly above the ground. She flashed Josh a crooked grin, though Victor was unsure if it was of genuine friendliness, or if it belied the mischief and malcontent often associated with ghost Pokemon, [break][break]

“This is Karitei, by the way,” he offered in introduction.

The Spiritomb's presence made Josh briefly shiver. He wasn't a big fan of ghost Pokémon, though Dragapult was an exception due to it also being a dragon-type. If there was one Pokémon he could ride into the ethereal world, it was Sidewinder. It was a Pokémon he wished he had brought with him, though it would not be good for Victor to learn with. They were incredibly fast, and going to the ethereal world was dangerous even for experienced riders. "A Spiritomb? A formidable Pokémon, though one I would never raised," Josh replied idly before turning away from the phantom.

Undoing the latch on one of his Poké Balls, Josh clicked its switch, releasing a Drampa that was near and dear to him. "This is Valoo," he introduced the docile, long-necked Pokémon before giving him a hug. It was clear the Drampa was special to him in some way, the dragon returning every bit of affection the Gym Leader gave him. "If you want to learn to ride a dragon, there's none easier to learn with than one of these." Valoo stretched his long neck toward Victor, gently bumping him on the cheek if he allowed it.

The Master of Faster got down from Verte, swapping the green dragon for Resheph, a Dragonair also near and dear to him. "Figured it would be easier for you to learn if we both rode serpentine dragons. This is Resheph. She'd been with me since my teenage days in Johto," Josh introduced the Dragonair, who cooed at Victor with curiosity. "Hop on." After making sure Victor was able to board Valoo properly, he would climb onto Resheph's saddle himself.

The sight of the Drampa sent a brief surge of panic coursing through Victor. His last encounter with the species had been less than pleasant, and even with it's affable and kind appearance, Victor couldn't help but feel a wary hesitation. However, much of the feeling dissipated upon seeing Josh embrace Valoo with such love and affection, and when the dragon gave Victor a kind bump on the cheek, any remaining bit of fear almost instantaneously evaporated, [break][break]

“Nice to meet you, Valoo,” Victor replied with a light chuckle as he stroked the affectionate dragon on the head, “Sounds good. I'm sure Valoo will be considerate of a beginner like me.” [break][break]

Victor listened to Josh attentively, nodding in acknowledgment of the next dragon he was introduced to. Resheph was the second Pokemon Victor had met that Josh had had since his youth, though it struck him as odd that the Dragonair had not yet evolved in all those years. Deciding it would be rude to point this out, Victor pushed the thought aside as he climbed aboard Valoo. As he got himself seated on the Drampa's saddle, he turned back to Josh, [break][break]

“Any particular difference between riding a serpentine dragon as opposed to a non-serpentine dragon?” [break][break]

With his attention focused on boarding Valoo, Victor didn't notice that more wild Pokemon had come to greet the new visitors to the Pillar. Even if he had, however, the glowering stare of the lingering Spiritomb would have been sure to ensure that any smaller Pokemon would keep their distance from the older man.

Victor's apprehension around dragon-types was understandable. They commanded respect, and some even ruled over their trainers more than entered partnerships with them. One region Josh had visited a long time ago forbade trainers from owning dragon Pokémon without a special permit. "There's no easier dragon to learn with. Even kindergarteners get to brag they've flown on the fastest Drampa in the world," Josh answered. That wasn't saying much; Valoo was not very fast compared to the rest of Josh's team. Particularly after learning with Pazuzu, Victor might find controlling the placid dragon easy.

Unsurprisingly, Victor had many questions. "Serpentine dragons have nearly unlimited mobility when they're flying. They can soar in any direction while facing any direction, and can even hover. That's the biggest adjustment. You know how with Pazuzu, he had to keep a minimum speed to maintain lift? Serpentine dragons don't have to do that. Think of it like riding a roller coaster with no set track."

Josh would observe Victor getting used to Valoo's undulations before taking off after him. "When you're ready, want to fly up to a higher level? I'm sure there will be more dragon Pokémon higher up. They fly higher than birds, after all!"

As they ascended upon the backs of Josh's draconic companions, Karitei floating alongside, Victor thought he saw a brief blur of movement. He turned, craning his neck, trying to get a better look at the creature in his periphery. It was then that he realized that the Dragapult was practically on top of him. [break][break]

With a yelp, he managed to maneuver Valoo to the side, narrowly avoiding a collision with the ghostly dragon swooping down at him. Victor's eyes widened as the wild Pokemon turned on a dime, immediately altering it's trajectory to make another striking pass at him. The strength, the impossible speed; this was exactly the kind of Pokemon Victor was looking for. Eyes narrowing with resolve, he called out to the Spiritomb floating nearby, [break][break]

“Karitei, SHADOW SNEAK.” [break][break]

It was a command issued with uncharacteristic coldness, but Victor knew he had to do whatever was necessary to capture the dragon. Karitei giggled malevolently as dark shadows beneath her floating keystone whirled away, only to reappear behind the Dragapult to strike it with terrifying force. The dragon screeched in pain, whirling off to the side as the blow hit home. Before the wild Pokemon could recover, Victor commanded again, [break][break]

“Keep it up, hit him with a SUCKER PUNCH.”[break][break]

The cackling Spiritomb complied with dark glee as she sailed towards her target, a whirling strike of darkness reaching out to attack the Dragapult. Victor was struck by a pang of guilt as the dragon screeched again; it was a horrible sound, with all the uncomfortable harshness of nails on a chalkboard, but emoting genuine pain and agony. He tossed a Poke Ball at the faltering creature and furrowed his brow. No, what he was doing was necessary, right? He needed strength on his side. He'd find a way to make it up to the dragon later.

The look on Josh's face when Victor's Poké Ball encapsulated the Dragapult was... concerning. Even alarming. "I... can't recommend a Dragapult for your first dragon-type ride Pokémon," Josh cautioned. "They are not only incredibly fast, but if you're not used to how sensitive they are to control, you'll go flying. A hard tug on their reins, and they'll whip you off their backs. Not because they were trying to buck you off. Because of how quickly they can turn."

There was also another concern. "Going ethereal is also really dangerous.
