Zev did a double take. Normally, scenarios started with him standing still, allowing for a smoother transition between the machine in standby mode and the first simulation. It seemed the additions to the machine allowed for more advanced—and jarring—starts. [break][break]

He barely had time to take in his unfamiliar, futuristic surroundings when the wail of sirens abruptly filled the air. His head jerked in the direction of the noise; in the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Lulu Flint, who had entered the simulation with him. [break][break]

Moments later, law enforcement came into view, riding Genesect. Genesect! Shock colored Zev's face, but training and experience took over in a matter of moments. Turning in his seat to focus on the road, he yelled at Lulu: [break][break]

"We need to lose them! Those alleys coming up are probably our best bet!" [break][break]

she hadn’t been on a motorcycle in years—not since a car had knocked her from her own, and she’d been wrestled into the trunk to be delivered to her execution.[break][break]

it was both thrilling and nerve-inducing to be on the cyclizar’s back, simulation or not. it felt familiar, so much so that she found herself leaning into the turns in the road.[break][break]

the genesect were a shock to her as well, but there was little time to piece together how it had happened. they were being pursued.[break][break]

”i think so too! i’ll meet you on the other side!”[break][break]

they flew through busy alleys, and she tried her best not to be distracted by the futuristic city between the breaks in the sides of buildings.

The unfamiliar streets brought Zev to a dead end. Frustrated, he turned to face the cops who had cornered him. As they shouted orders to comply, he silently calculated the best way to handle them. Already, black crystals were emerging from beneath his skin to spread over his body. [break][break]

Then the city went dark and familiar flashes of prismatic light filled the sky. [break][break]

Zev grinned, and it was a terrible thing. [break][break]

Serpentine tendrils of crystal shot out from his body to pierce man and Pokémon alike, slicing through them like a knife through hot butter. Blood splattered and agonized screams echoed in the alleyway. [break][break]

she didn’t quite make it to him, but never stopped. something about being chased by police that kept her moving, even in a simulation. being that it was new to her, it felt more lifelike than the others.[break][break]

”come on, harcourt…” she muttered to herself, only before witnessing the prismatic light that seemed eerily familiar through the sudden, suffocating darkness that overtook the world ahead.[break][break]

”stopstopstop!“[break][break]

they tried to slow at the expanding edge of oncoming panic, and through a break in walls, she could have sworn she saw him there, basking in the blood and the glow of his patron.[break][break]

”never mind–go!”[break][break]

they cut right in the opposite direction, only to face the police again, who seemed torn about continuing their pursuit with another oncoming threat. her porygon materialized into the digital world beside her, sending a glowing psybeam in their direction.[break][break]

As bodies fell at Zev's feet, they dematerialized. His surroundings melted away, revealing a different landscape—the same one that periodically appeared in half-rendered dreams. [break][break]

Ancient Galar. [break][break]

In the distance, Dynamaxed Pokémon battled, destroying the land. Even farther away, Eternatus glided in the air. [break][break]

An instinctive urge to destroy filled Zev as soon as he caught sight of it; his eyes, bright with hunger, followed its movements across the sky. His skin itched as crystals spread to cover even more of his body. [break][break]

So focused was he on his—Necrozma's—ancient adversary that he did not notice the two gleaming weapons embedded in stone. Nor did he care if Lulu Flint had drawn closer or if she was elsewhere in the scenario.

The scene shifted to a place that looked vaguely familiar, but once she picked up on subtle difference in the shapes of trees, and the climate, she realized it was not Hoenn.[break][break]

her eyes fell from Eternatus in the sky, and giant pokemon in the distance, down to the weapons in stone ahead. it occurred to her that this was galar—the one she’d only heard about.[break][break]

Dark crystal sparkled in the corner of her eye. Subtly, her gaze turned on the avatar to gauge his reaction to the ‘skeleton’ above.[break][break]

the sounds of war clamored and cried in the distance, uninterrupted for a moment before she eventually asked, ”were you there, in the old galar, for all those years?”[break][break]

when he made no move, she approached the sword and reached for it.[break][break]

Absorbing the nearby metals strewn across the battlefield, the Zacian ascends to its regal form. As the Fairy King's Sword, the gilded Zacian beckons for you to fight alongside it.[break][break]

Ahead, Dynamax Pokemon stomp across Galar like bloodthirsty titans. Eternatus continues to soar, unhindered.

"That wasn't real," Zev said, convinced that everyone who said otherwise had suffered a hallucination. It had been the trick of a Pokémon and nothing more. "We battled at the Ancient Tomb and that was it." [break][break]

Still, the Zacian that emerged from the stone conjured the vivid mental image of a Zamazenta that had done the same. Zev watched from behind a mask of black crystal as it took the sword from Lulu and transformed before their very eyes. [break][break]

When the heroic dog beckoned, Necrozma's Avatar saw no reason to refuse. Every atom in his body wished to rip Eternatus into pieces and drink deeply of the energy housed within its flesh. [break][break]

Zev nodded at Zacian and broke into a run as it led them into battle. [break][break]

the sword pulled from the stone without much effort. she felt knightly, like if the hunger of necrozma were to overtake the beast near her, she might possess the power to drive the blade right through him and end what was surely coming for a second time.[break][break]

”hm. what’s real anymore, these days?” she mused, as she watched the light glint on the heroic blade’s edge.[break][break]

the stone shivered with life and cracked apart, and within it was the true owner of the sword. she handed it over to zacian, the magical feeling the weapon brought leaving with it.[break][break]

as the legendary dog led them to battle, she was at the rear aboard her porygon, a magnet rise carrying them higher to get a better look.[break][break]

”tri attack,” she commanded, squinting past the bright lighting spewing from eternatus’ horrific gaze.[break][break]

The simulation states that the Pokemon is a Miraidon: a robotic, calculating dragon able to scorch the earth into ash. No other data exists pertaining to this Iron Serpent. Curiously, it seems paired with you.[break][break]

A roar rattles down the tunnel. Another Miraidon hovers toward you in ultimate form, its jet engines pulsing blue and electrical bolts sparking from its metallic plating.[break][break]

You're in the middle of a territorial dispute and there's no way out.

Just as Zev and Zacian reached Eternatus, prepared to clash with it, the scene transformed. Zev's crystalline claws smashed into a sprawling wall of a Terastal cavern. The impact shocked him enough to snap him out of his ravenous bloodlust. [break][break]

"Where are we?" he asked no one in particular, though he noticed Lulu in the corner of his eye. Or her reflection, anyway. [break][break]

Taking a step back, Zev took in the scene around them: gleaming crystal and the image of a Pokémon he had never seen before. Miraidon, the simulation informed them. The Beast committed its form to memory. [break][break]

With the way Legendary Pokémon seemed to congregate in Hoenn, he had no doubt knowledge of this one would prove useful one day. [break][break]

"Do you know anything about this Pokémon?" he asked, turning to Lulu. [break][break]
