[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Even in the midst of unimaginable new possibilities and undiscovered new wonders, faction conflict still inevitably reared its ugly head. Aurelie let out a quiet, resigned sigh as she approached the squat, well-fortified League research station on cautious, stealthy feet. Beside her, Lulu Flint moved even more silently, her measured tread on the lush grass showing her experience with covert missions.

At least for the assignment at hand, they were unlikely to run into active League opposition. Rocket had received word earlier that this particular research station's personnel had all rushed out to investigate something down in Area Zero. The station now lay temptingly empty and unguarded.

Their orders were to find and steal anything valuable that they could carry: reports, data storage drives, communication devices, samples, lab equipment, and weapons. Whatever they couldn't take, they were to damage or outright destroy. It seemed fitting for an organization of thieves and saboteurs.

Aurelie surveyed the deserted-looking station, taking heart in the lack of movement or sound coming from inside. Releasing her Skarmory, she wordlessly motioned for it to fly skyward and keep a sharp eye on the station's surroundings. Then she met Lulu's eyes, gestured at the station, and nodded.

Let's get in and out fast, she tried to convey by lifting her index finger and waving it back and forth from the research station to the area outside. We don't know when the League personnel will come back to this place, after all.

once upon a time, she would have had issues with destroying the scientific progress of others. team rocket needed to get ahead, however, and after her reluctance to do damage during the battle at the disappearing island, she figured she ought to show commitment to their cause.[break][break]

with brisk steps she approached the empty station. aurelie’s signals were followed by a single point at the entrance, after which the scientist’s genesect launched itself inside and did a quick round to ensure that it was indeed empty.[break][break]

when it returned, lulu flashed a small smile to aurelie. ”all clear.”[break][break]

she walked in with confidence, going for computers first, disconnecting and bagging what storage devices she could find.[break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie gawked unabashedly at the sight of the Genesect, which she'd only ever seen before in the RKS system and never in the flesh—or the metal, perhaps, was the right term. When it completed its patrol and Lulu signaled the all-clear, the redhead breathed a sigh of relief and broke into a relieved smile.

"Thank goodness!" she replied, still keeping her voice to a low murmur out of habit. "It's good to not have to keep worrying about being noisy and getting caught. I was even worrying I was breathing too loudly!"

She motioned for her Skarmory to stay in the air and keep a lookout, before following the scientist into the station. While Lulu headed for the computers first, Aurelie decided to focus on the file cabinet and bookshelves. Unslinging the empty backpack from her shoulders, she began scooping file folders from the latter and dumping them inside.

The padlocks on the file cabinet presented more of an obstacle. Thinking back to a warehouse robbery she'd pulled almost two years ago, Aurelie rummaged through the backpack. She finally found the small crowbar she'd brought on a whim and then drew a sturdy multi-tool from her pocket. Fitting the prong ends of the crowbar into the padlock's U-shaped bar, she used the multi-tool like a hammer and struck the crowbar sharply three times.

On the third strike, the padlock popped open. With a pleased little cry, Aurelie reached inside and pulled out more files and documents. Some looked like maps and photos, which would've piqued her interest if there had been time to examine them.

For now, though, her backpack wasn't big enough to hold all the files, plus everything else they wanted to bring back. Judging from the labels, Aurelie had gotten most of the most recent files. She frowned at the drawers full of more paper.

"Okay, I don't think I want to set fire to these, even though that'd get rid of them for sure," she mused aloud. "I don't want to fill the station with smoke, though. Let me see..."

The desk next to the file cabinet was littered with bottles of water. Rapidly unscrewing the tops, she began splashing water randomly through the drawers full of folders, hopefully smearing ink and sticking pages together. It wasn't perfect, but it was the fastest thing she could think of.

"Found anything interesting so far?" she asked over her shoulder, while reaching for the last bottle of water.

a thumb drive was plucked from a port on a computer tower, and she replaced it with another, left out on the desk. the computer itself would be fried soon enough.[break][break]

sweeping through another area, she grabbed a loose notes, unable to keep from peeking at them, despite their hurry. she was quick to realize when she was burning time, and shoved them away.[break][break]

aurelie’s pondering caught her attention briefly, but she seemed to quickly have it figured out. ”that works.”[break][break]

she predicted if there was anything interesting to be found, it was already in her bag, hiding in the devices she’d collected. ”couple hard drives and some notes. you?”[break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]"A lot of notes here too," Aurelie replied, closing the last drawer filled with files that were now dripping or running with formerly-bottled water. "And a lot of reports, spreadsheets, maps, and photos.

"And some papers that look like research logs..." Her voice trailed off on that last one as the redhead looked around the research station with a faint frown. The desks and worktables around them looked so empty now with the file folders and data disks stowed away.

Aurelie wasn't sure what she'd expected inside a League research station, but, well, research equipment would've made sense. Microscopes, scales and balances, energy monitors, Pokemon containment units, mass spectrometers—something more than just paperwork and computers. There simply wasn't much here, though, which made her wonder if the League personnel had taken the equipment with them.

"I guess we can start with smashing up the rest of the computers..." she began, brandishing her small crowbar. Aurelie cut off, though, when she suddenly heard a piercing, high-pitched cry from her Skarmory outside, followed by a series of frenetic, metallic clattering noises.

She could only hope those noises meant her Skarmory had flown out of sight, because moments later, they could hear the sound of voices and footsteps coming from outside. Both the voices and footsteps quickly grew louder, making Aurelie go pale.

"Are they coming back?" she gasped. "The League, I mean?"

Nervously, Aurelie tried to peek out the nearest window without giving away their presence. Then she looked back toward her Rocket compatriot and bit her lip. "What should we do? Fight them? Or make a run for it?"

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Catching the faint hint of reluctance in Lulu's manner as she approached the bank of computers, Aurelie hesitated and tilted her head to one side curiously, wondering if she was missing something. "Well, maybe we can just..." she began. But she cut herself off at the sound of the approaching voices outside.

It was easy to be brave inside an RKS simulation, where death or serious injury seemed highly unlikely, if not impossible. On the other hand, angry League members might very well kill or injure her. Aurelie was no battle-hardened warrior, no combat veteran, and the prospect made her apprehensive.

But she met Lulu's gaze and swallowed, before nodding firmly. "You're right, we should carry out the rest of our orders first. Then, I'm all for getting out here!"

Grateful that her voice had emerged steady and even, Aurelie put her fingers to her lips to whistle for her Skarmory, before smashing into a monitor with her crowbar. Then she whistled again in amazement when Lulu's Genesect fired a blinding TECHNO BLAST at the computers. "Name of Arceus! Where do I get one of those?" she exclaimed, her good humor restored.

Computer parts crashed to the ground, smoke emerged from burnt wiring and plastic, and the voices outside grew louder. Then those voices changed in pitch, suddenly growing shrill and alarmed, seconds before Aurelie realized the ground trembling under her feet wasn't from the Genesect's attack.

"What in the hell?" she cried out, as the entire building started to shake. The floor buckled and cracked as the very earth began to undulate and roll in surging waves, and pieces of equipment slid off shelves and desks to crash and split apart.

Scrambling to maintain her balance, Aurelie managed to gasp out, "Well, I really did not see this coming! On the other hand, maybe this earthquake will do the rest of our job for us. And cover our tracks on top of it."

She began stumbling toward the building's back corridor to where the emergency exit light was flashing, cradling her backpack with one arm and holding up the other to shield her face from falling objects. "Let's get out of here now, before we end up crushed or trapped if the ceiling comes down on us!"

aurelie was a warrior, lulu believed. she’d seen it in the simulation, as the woman had charged ahead, nothing holding her back from her attack on eternatus beside the legendary zacian.[break][break]

perhaps it was only a matter of time before the heart of a warrior showed itself in reality. but today? maybe they were in trouble.[break][break]

her teeth flashed with pride at aurelie’s whistle. ”oscar clayton . good friend of mine.” great friend. ”you should come to the labs some time. we’ll fix you up.”[break][break]

she wondered what the blacksmith might think of durantium chrome – a powerful alloy made from the melted bodies of many steel-type pokemon. it was what genesect was made of.[break][break]

her grin fell as the ground began to shake. aurelie had the right idea, she figured with a nod, and followed quickly towards the back door. ”apparently there’ve been lots of earthquakes here! starting to wonder if it’s a pokemon causing them...”[break][break]

as they reached the door, they were spotted by league authorities peeking into the building. ”hey!” a man called – just before the building split, and the roof crumbled inward.[break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Happily ignorant of the somewhat unsavory process used to create Genesects, Aurelie's face lit up with innocent pleasure and excitement at Lulu's offer of a Genesect of her own. "Oh, I know Oscar! He's great. I'd love that at some point, as long as it's not too much trouble."

When the earthquake began, the red-haired smith sucked in her breath anxiously at the alarming news of just how common earthquakes were in this area. "I guess it's not too strange that this place is unstable. But yikes! That's one report or rumor or whatever that I would've been happy to take on faith!"

After all, Aurelie certainly wasn't the more scientifically inclined or data-oriented one of the pair right now.

The sound of the man's voice behind them gave her an unwelcome shock, as she hadn't realized the League might still pursue them even in the midst of an earthquake. She managed to keep herself from looking back and just kept running toward the back door. The thunderous din of the building collapsing behind them, though, did make her glance back over her shoulder just to marvel at the destruction.

"I wonder if we made it out just in time!" she panted, shaking her head and wincing. Patting her backpack stuffed with file folders and a few hard drives, she added, "At least, we got hold of some things worth having before it was all wrecked!"

Maybe we even did a good thing in there, she thought as she slowly caught her breath and jogged further out into the open, where no debris was likely to fall on them. Even if we were there to steal and destroy. We still ended up rescuing things that would've just gotten demolished anyway.

Well, even if it hadn't been the most morally virtuous thing they've ever done, it still felt much, much better than trying to run away from the Regirock in the RKS system and getting shredded into pieces by flying boulders.

Hearing Lulu's whistle, she smiled appreciatively at the sight of the Noivern approaching, especially as the earth continued to shudder and ripple. "Thanks for the lift! Flying definitely seems like the safer option right now."

Sliding her backpack on her shoulders, Aurelie stepped toward the Noivern and then paused as another thought occurred to her. "Oh, hmm! If we're heading back to store all this in one of our research stations, we should make sure the station can handle earthquakes better. At the very least, we could probably secure things so they don't fall off tables or shelves and break."
