Much like always, the snap back to reality is sudden and jarring.[break][break]

Chu-e pauses in twirling the rainbow colored crystal in their fingers. They open their mouth and allow the other shards they've found to spill out, wet with spit, onto the dirt. Their mouth is still filled with grit and dust. Fucking Pica.[break][break]

They only allow the most hateful of stares at the collection of gems before glancing around the area.[break][break]

Chu-e has no idea where they're at.[break][break]

How long ago had they wandered from howard slayte's little camp? Had the man even noticed? Would he even have cared? Too many questions that would sit tucked in his back pocket to mire over later.[break][break]

Chu-e wipes their chin with the back of their hand and looks over the harsh and jutting landscape of this place. Lucky that he didn't fall into a pit and die.[break][break]

A quick check reveals some pokeballs and his communicator. Not all of the balls are filled, left back at the camp with Howard, and the communicator seems to be experiencing some interference. How fun.[break][break]

Chu-e sighs and allows themselves to sit down on a large rock nearby and stew in the complex emotions of their own fading health for a few, long moments.[break][break]

Some would call him insane for wandering down here on his own. Navy simply calls it his duty. Roland, his own Iron Valiant, keeps away his kin. One look at the keen killing edge of the Pokemon’s galaxy blade and they think better of approaching. There’s easier prey throughout the caverns.[break][break]
It’s a shame. These paradox Pokemon make for a pretty good fight. The younger man he was thinks he could use some excitement, only for the older man to beat the notion down. Excitement means trouble.[break][break]
By the grace of tera, fate, or coincidence, the younger man is granted his wish. Up ahead, someone sits down to rest. They, too, look like they have a lot on their mind. Navy’s blood runs cold at the sight.[break][break]
Nothing rouses anger in him quite like a bad father.[break][break]
He walks forward with purpose. A sharp look tells his Iron Valiant to stay back a few paces. Roland knows the human’s moods well. There are some battles meant for swords and some for words.[break][break]
“You’ve got a lot of nerve.” They’re the first words he has ever spoken to Chu-e. “Eris misses the hell out of you.”

Chu-e spots the man coming from a mile away. There isn't some call to action, some defensive maneuvers. Hell, he doesn't call out one of the pokemon he does have with him. They just sit there and slowly pick sand off of their tongue.[break][break]

Michael Navidson was a lot different in person. Taller than him, yet still not as tall as expected. Photos could never quite match up, it seemed. The images in the press, fan-sites, or from certain hacked cameras could never compare, though. Not with someone like Navidson.[break][break]

Chu-e had never met the man and had truly hoped he never would, if only for something as awkward as this. It wasn't Navy's fault that he stood up larger than life in some frames of the League. That, in of itself, was enough to make Chu-e suspicious. He had worked, hunched over computer monitors in a dark room, for weeks. Scouring unsavory deep websites for any sniff of impurity from the other.[break][break]

Anything for Eris Halla.[break][break]

Chu-e only gives Navy a raised brow and plucks another piece of grit from his mouth.[break][break]

"You assume I don't miss her, then?"[break][break]

It's blase. Bored.[break][break]

Chu-e folds their fingers together and cups around their knee, tilting a head to wait for answer.

“I’ve held that girl while she cried since you were gone. She’s crying for you. If…Rocket’s holding you against your will, I’ll fight for you.” His tone shows he doesn’t believe that. Chu-e is where they want to be, for their own reasons. A man can hope. What a surprise that would be for Eris, for her to see her father brought home.[break][break]

Chu-e takes a deep breath and sighs. Closes their eyes to calm the stirring of emotions in their chest.[break][break]

Because while Chu-e had done his research, Michael Navidson was not Kazimir Wynter. He was not Isaac Merlo. He was not any of the handful of people who Chu-e had allowed himself some moments of weakness. The mask would stay firmly in place. As much as it hurt, as much as it might piss Navy off, as much as it might paint him as far more cruel than he was.[break][break]

"Do you know about the honey, Navidson? What about Necrozma? I stay away by choice. I joined Rocket again by choice. That doesn't mean I like either of those things."[break][break]

It is as collected. Chu-e opens his eyes again and levels Navy with a searching look.[break][break]

There is an offer between those words. A magician willing to reveal a trick.

“What can Rocket do for you that the League couldn’t have? Our scientists are the best.” An easy statement to make when he does not know Naomi Sato, the visionary, is one of Rocket’s best minds. He thinks Eva and Illeana could do anything. A pair of dragon gods seem to agree with his assessment.[break][break]
He waits for Chu-e’s answer, looking at Eris’s father with profound sadness. Chu-e is not a raging alcoholic like Joshua Navidson, nor are they the sort of monster Melody Miro’s mother was.[break][break]
The longer he thinks on this, the less he likes it, the more it strikes him as the League’s government having failed another soul.

Chu-e does not answer right away. Instead, he scoots over on his rock and pats it. Offering Michael Navidson a seat.[break][break]

When they speak again, they glance down at the ground. At the shimmering crystals and freshly turned earth.[break][break]

"People tried to kill me within the League's care. Those people did not care if they hurt her in the crossfire. Necrozma was my leverage to keep Rocket away from us. That's gone now, too."[break][break]

There is a lie hidden in there, too.[break][break]

A truth that Chu-e has not revealed to anyone.[break][break]

His lip trembles before he stills it with force, making them form into a thin line.[break][break]

"I will happily die with my daughter hating me if it means she has a chance at a normal life."[break][break]

Now, Chu-e stands. It is a slow, graceful rise to his full height. He steps closer to Navy. Chest to chest, for all that could be. Thin fingers ball into tight fists at his sides.[break][break]

Those usually empty, dead eyes burn with a deep fury inside of them. Not aimed at Navy. Not aimed at Eris Halla. Only for the deep self loathing that rings in his chest and the fate that has allowed this.[break][break]

His voice stays crisp but calm when he speaks, despite it.[break][break]

"Will you turn your back on her? Did I throw my chips into the wrong pile? Or will you be the man I can't be for her, Navidson?"

The fire dims down. Importantly, though, it does not die.[break][break]

It's laced with a certain bitterness. There is an apology there. Fate had doomed Chu-e Choi long before his talk with Michael Navidson. Eris Halla would be one more in a long list of hurts he would cause and hearts he would break. It was painful.[break][break]

The idealistic place that Navy wanted, where Chu-e joined the League and then lived happily ever after, would never come to pass.[break][break]

But there were always other options.[break][break]

Chu-e offers his hand to the other. To shake.[break][break]

A devil offering a deal.[break][break]

"We want the same thing, you know."[break][break]

To speak it into the air is treason.[break][break]

But what could a dying man possibly fear?

Their position places him so that he must offer his left hand. Its frayed, pinched, dead nerves send a jolt of pain up his arm when they shake. His palm is scarred, the hand calloused and rough. These hands know work and hard labor. Skin along the knuckles have cracked and bled before harder skin took its place. It is the hand of a warrior.[break][break]

Chu-e's hand is not like Michael Navidson's. It is soft and fragile. There are many old scars, but whatever calluses he had in his youth are gone. Only the bony skin of the sick. Still, he squeezes with a firmness of surety.[break][break]
