“Alcove not far from the entrance,” she muttered quietly to herself as she scanned over the crude map. It didn’t seem detailed enough to outline an alcove. She frowned again, predicting she’d have to make many adjustments. Arceus, she missed angelo vestri.

It really was imperative that Navy accompany her. With her attention trapped by the mapping and the plotting and the planning she didn’t have any extra to divert to avoiding the perils of Area Zero and the Great Chasm like the Great Tusk his Kommo-O needed to ward off. She didn’t seem bothered by it, only glancing up briefly to make sure she didn’t need to intervene in any way.

She followed about half a step behind Navy with her Porygon2 buzzing beside her. The pokemon hummed within activity, scanning their surroundings to bring even more detail to the map on her tablet they were linked to. She watched the lines shift end move each time the pokemon TRACED their surroundings. Once comfortable she didn’t need to keep all her attention on the map, she diverted some of that to Navy.

“The Terastal Phenomenon?” she pulled out the scientific appropriate term for the subject at hand to make sure she wasn't wrongly assuming his vague gestures, “There is still much to learn,” she sounded both disappointed and excited about that factual statement, “Even Paldea doesn’t have much research on it,” Once it came to Hoenn, she naturally dug into the literature, even conferencing with scientists from the other region, “But that’s a question I will answer soon . . . hopefully,” Unfortunately, Hoenn wasn’t very forthcoming with answers, “I have some theories though,” What good scientist wouldn’t? She wouldn’t bore him with the details unless he asked.

Eva glanced up at Navy momentarily, hiding her frown behind the shadow of a smile. Hoenn wasn’t very forthcoming with answers, and in many ways she felt like she persistently came up short. Imposter syndrome was real, and she wished she had as much confidence in herself as others seemed to have, including Navy.

“I don’t think it’s that complicated, really,” she began when given the opportunity. She waits to continue until after the Scream Tail is frightened away by Navy’s Aura Sphere, “Well, what I guess I mean is that it’s not too different from Mega Evolution.”

Another thrill of beeps erupted from the Porygon2 as another TRACE scanned over the immediate environment, “I’ve noticed a lot of similarities. The energy itself is fundamentally different but seemingly predictable once you figure it out,” she continued to follow alongside Navy, looking to see a slumbering Noibat in crevice, “They both came to Hoenn on meteors, they both requires a catalyst for channeling the energy, and it is finite in its power. Predictable. Definitely seems safer than Dynergy, I agree. That stuff is unpredictable.”

A long, exacerbated sigh rattled her lips as she nodded in agreement with Navy, “Yes, it really worries me how eager everyone is to embrace it so willingly,” she was referring to the use of Dynergy and the homemade power spots. Those certainly weren’t coming out of her lab. If they sought her council at all, she would have been strongly against it. There was still so much they didn’t understand about harnessing an energy so closely associated with a god that held an extensive resume of destruction.

“Hmph,” she expelled a sharp snort, shaking her head immediately, “They are entirely different energies with entirely different sources. Sudowoodo and a tree look the same but they’re entirely different, no?” The Pokemon didn’t have an atom of plant material in its body, “If it was connected to Mega Energy at all I would probably feel it,” she embodied the energy, she was a conduit for it, a living keystone, “Mega evolution unlocks hidden potential - something a pokemon can’t tap into without a conduit and a bond. It instills a power that goes against equilibrium making them more powerful. The bond keeps them tethered to the balance. That’s why it’s dangerous to keep them Mega Evolved for too long,” as one might expect from a scientist, his question became a lesson, “There may be some superficial similarities, but Mega Evolution harnesses something that is already inside the pokemon. The Infinity Energy that is inherently a part of them. Some pokemon have more than others and that’s why not every pokemon can Mega Evolve. From what I can tell, Dynamax harnesses an exterior energy and the pokemon floods itself with it, giving every pokemon the potential. That’s why there needs to be a Power Spot. It's not natural,” she looked up at Navy to judge his reaction, “That sounds more like a poison, don’t you think?”

Eva was pleasantly surprised that this was turning out to be a much more intriguing conversation than she was expecting. It’s not that she thought Navy was dull or uneducated, but trainers of his caliber had a certain . . . reputation. They weren’t known to be articulate in scholarly matters.

“I think that’s a good hypothesis,” she agreed, noncommittal until there was more data. The whole Dynergy and Dynamax had been around for centuries, it seemed, but it was fresh to them in Hoenn and the literature has been stale, “It certainly needs more dedication in the science department, especially since they League seems so hell bent on creating all these Power Spots,” her nose wrinkled in agitation, clearly unhappy with the idea of it.

A short silence followed his question. Eva didn’t want to steer him wrong. Her mind scrolled through some recent abstracts but she eventually ended up shaking her head, “Not that I can recall. The spatial stability has been a huge focus,” but that seemed to be stabilizing itself now that Palkia and illeana reyes were united, “It certainly should be a focus now since Dynamaxing has surged in popularity,” she last thing Eva wanted was trainers unintentionally poisoning their own pokemon. How awful it would be to learn such a thing. Perhaps, as the biological energies expert, she should be shifting her lab’s focus to such things. In a way, it reflect the dangers of Primal Energy and the potential intoxication.

Eva respected her government, but there were certainly things she didn’t agree with and was not afraid to voice those opinions. She was vehemently against sending the asteroid to Sea!Hoenn and she expressed her concerns until she was blue in the face. If any one bothered to consult her on the Power Spots and Dynergy, her sentiments would have likely aligned with Navy’s. It was just too dangerous.

Mega evolved pokemon were manageable, as were terastalized pokemon. Z-moves were a one shot - powerful but they understood them enough to counter and contain them. Gigantamax and Dynamax on the other hand . . . those pokemon were hard to contain. And an army of them? They would crush the cities without even having to try.

It’s not the chill of the cavern’s air that made her shiver, but the dread she felt when thinking about a host of Dynamaxed pokemon. She pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders, “Yeah, too many,” she agreed with a solemn expression.

“I don’t remember much at all,” she admitted, glancing back up at Navy. freya morningstar had recently jogged a bit of her memory but it was just a whisper some a life that would never be again. The details were buried so deep they were probably burning in the core, “There is quite a bit of lore in The Wilds,” she still had a lot to review from her time in Lesser Megalopolis, “I have a lot of data to sift through,” just not enough time to do it all, "I'd love to collaborate with her if you think she's willing," more minds are better than one, that was a mantra Eva lived by.

Eva was lucky to not remember, but luck had nothing to do with it. Her mind made the best choice given the situation. It was an act of survival. Without the barriers that separated her from those memories, she’d be a broken and wounded girl.

Eva’s eyes lit up at the promise of collaboration, “Great!” she smiled up at Navy, “You can have her stop by my office sometime, if she wants,” Eva would be sure to keep an eye out for her. She wasn’t privy to the details of Gym Jam yet, but she’s sure she’d get a report at some point. There was very little she wasn’t cleared to know.

The massive crystalline structure seemed to come out of nowhere. Her eyes widened and heart raced. She became as giddy as a schoolgirl and her pace quickened, “Wow!! What a sight!” the tablet rose to start taking pictures and documenting the area, “Yeah, probably a good idea, you know, with all those paradox pokemon running around,” she didn’t look up from her work but agreed Arthur should stick around.

“Oh, The Wilds?” she tapped away at the tablet while talking, instructing her Porygon2 to TRACE several areas in detail, “Um, well, a lot, actually,” it was far too much to summarize for him now, “I think Deep Sea is the only one I haven’t been to,” that made her raise her gaze from the tablet, her fingers pausing. She looked at Navy with creased brows, “Maybe you can show me around it sometime. Then I can show you around some of the others?” Collaboration. Bam.
