Sighing that the two were still fighting despite Zachary's Leafeon being upset with them, Josh withdrew Aleph. Today seemed it was just not a good day to build rapport with the Type: Null. He had been acting up for seven months despite every effort for Josh to care for him. Just how long did the normal-type legendary Pokémon need to be treated like an emperor to behave?

With the Pinsir threatening the many grass and psychic Pokémon Zachary was carrying, Josh turned his attention to it. Screech and Fire Eyes stared the insect down, a war cry letting him know it was time to hop off. After sliding down from the Linoone's saddle, Josh took cover from what would assuredly be a high speed battle. In another burst of EXTREME SPEED, Screech zipped toward the Pinsir as corrosive venom formed in Fire Eyes' mouth. Perhaps the sight of it would make the large insect back down.

"Are you and your Pokémon okay?" Josh asked Zachary. "Pinsir are even stronger than they look. Did you know that they can fly when they Mega Evolve?"

The Leafeon had now been out of sight, distracted by the Pincer and chaos from the fight. They were long gone-- so was Happy and Rabsca. Zachary looked in shock as he fell to his knees, disbelief by the bad fortune. Even worse it hit him, he couldn't stop the abduction because of his fear. [break][break] Josh was the one to ask if he was alright, but Zachary responded badly as he jumped up and yelled. "OF COUSE I AM NOT ALRIGHT!" Zachary shouted, startling even Dizzy in sympathy for his trainer, "That Leafeon just stole Happy and Rabsca. I should of been right on them but... but I'm too much of a freaking coward over some bugs! How can I be so USELESS!?" he shouted, his anger more at himself than Josh. [break][break] Dizzy gave a soft whimper of sympathy, his ears drooping. [break][break]

Happy was shaken like a rag doll as he clinged to the leafy fur of the Umbreon while the large creature lept and dashed through the forest. Rabsca was secure in is fur, but still Happy was tossed about. As was Swadloon, who Leafeon kept safe wrapped in its leaves. After a good running, things calmed down as Leafeon entered a sunlit grove of trees. A small stream ran through it, and the place completely circled by trees, leaving a perfect skylight for the sun to shine through. Leafeon soon walked to the center and laid down on it, letting go of the Pokemon it 'rescued'. [break][break] Happy tumbled to the grassy ground, dizzy and surprised. Rabsca soon joined it as did Swadloon. The little mime looked up at the now calmer gaze of the Leafeon. There was a sterness to her eyes, but also a compassion as it soon curled its leafy tail around the area and sat down like a big cat. Almost protective, like a mother protecting its cubs, Leafeon kept them safe near her. As she laid there, other pokemon in the area also gathered. Some were young, others seemingly injured-- and others just calling this grove home. They soon gathered and played around Leafeon as she rested and looked over them all diligently [break][break] Happy and Rabsca took in the scene, but they did want to get back to Zachary. The two glanced at one another-- well glance relatively from Rabsca being a floating beetle with a sac above its head. [break][break] Despite its once vicious demeanor, it had melted away to a tranquil protector as soon other Pokemon gathered around her, seeing her like a doting friend. Happy soon started to waddle away, perhaps to find the direction where Zachary was-- until Leafeon intervene. Much like a mother, the Leafeon reached over its mouth and picked up Happy by the nape of his neck, like a kitten. Happy sighed as the pokemon placed him back with the others there, Swadloon cheerful to see Happy brought back to it. [break][break]

[break][break] "HAPPY!! RABSCA!! WhERE ARE YOU?!" Zachary shouted, trying to find his lost friends. [break][break] Perhaps Josh could help track them, but they were so far away and Leafeon was far faster than Zachary thought. He was quickly getting exhausted as he grasped his knees. "Oh for crying out loud, they could be anywhere..." Zachary groaned, followed by Dizzy's barking at Zachary to keep it together. [break][break] However soon-- there was a rustling in a nearby bush. Zachary flinched, afraid it might be another bug. "Oh great... now what?!" Zachary gasped. [break][break] It was then that from the bush, casually stepped out was an odd creature. A green, leafy-looking cat, with big adorable eyes, a leafy main around its neck, and a cute appearance that would make one melt. It was a cat, made of greenery and leaves. "Mreeeoooww...." it mewed, soon discovering the two humans and the walking fox. [break][break] Zachary's gaze lit up with amazement, to find such a Pokemon. "N-no way... A spriggatito?" he said, drawing out his Pokedex. [break][break]

"Sprigatito-- the grass cat Pokemon. Its fluffy fur is similar in composition to plants. This Pokémon frequently washes its face to keep it from drying out. The sweet scent its body gives off mesmerizes those around it. The scent grows stronger when this Pokémon is in the sun."

[break][break] Dizzy looked at the cat, seeing as it soon looked back at them, equally surprised but not retreating. It reminded Zachary of a similar cat Pokemon he befriended when he was a kid. He gently knelt onto the grass and extended a hand. "Hey there, little guy. Nice to meet you," Zachary said, extending a hand. [break][break] At first Sprigatito flinched, cautioned by the extension of the hand, but Zachary didn't reach forward. After a bit, the cat sniffed the air around it, and glanced at the others. After a bit, the little cat gingerly stepped over and sniffed Zachary's hand, before he nudged his head against it. [break][break] Zachary answered by cupping his hand and petted the cat-- scratching it behind its ears, to which Sprigatito fell into a deep and appreciative purr. [break][break] "Wow... talk about lucky. Hey, do you think Sprigatito may now where Leafeon and the others ran off to?" Zachary asked Josh [break][break]

Josh felt miserable for Zachary; this wasn't the first time his Pokémon had run off, and it was clear that the Leafeon wasn't angry with his trainer, but the Gym Leader. "It's okay, Zachary. It's okay. We'll find them." He withdrew Fire Eyes and clicked open another Poké Ball, inside this one a Mightyena that was the size of a small horse. "If anyone can track him down, it's Voja," he gestured toward the dark-type hound's saddle.

Before they could take off, a pecking noise caught Josh's attention. Sure enough, a Pikipek was there, working an old tree for Wormadam larvae to snack on. Reminded of Alexei Ivanov , he hurled an empty Poké Ball at it while the wild was occupied. If he couldn't make the capture cleanly the first time, he would dismount Screech and let the Linoone knock it to the ground with a ramming, trampling burst of EXTREME SPEED.

"It's worth a try," Josh nodded as he returned from his own battle. "You're welcome to hop on Voja's back. That'll help us cover ground a bit faster." Regardless of travel arrangements, once they were off, he had a suggestion to help Zachary with the bug phobia. "Do you know who Shalin Nariya is? Rustboro's Ranger Captain?"

Shalin Nariya? Zachary did know the name. It was a moment of comfort as Zachary petted the eager Spriggatito. "Y-Yeah I know her. She's a ranger I met there. She's a bit... well odd, but nice," Zachary said as he turned-- Spriggatito now rolling on its back as Zachary scratched his tummy. [break][break] WIth Josh's offer, Zachary welcomed all the help he could get. However, Zachary soon turned to Spriggatito and with his pokedex. "Hey, little guy. Do you mind helping us. We are trying to find our friends. They were taken by this Pokemon. Do you know where it is?" Zachary then scrolled up a picture of the Leafeon in his Pokedex for the Spriggatito to see. The cat looked at it for a moment, and then gave an excited meow! [break][break] Between the Mightyena's nose and Spriggito, perhaps they could find where Happy was. [break][break] Whatever Josh had in mind with Shalin-- he would have to learn as they went. As they did, Dizzy gave a bark at Spriggatito, and how he cozied up to Zachary. In agitation, the grass-cat looked at the fox and too cast a cat-like hiss at him. The two soon exchanged frightful glares, both not seeming to like one another. However, the urgency to find their friends was not gone -- as soon they continued on their way. [break][break]

Despite being 'kidnapped', Rabsca and Happy were among a rather peaceful and happy atmosphere. Many pokemon showed up. A green parrot-like bird, a Shuckle of all things, and other types gathered there around Leafeon as she semi-napped like a cat in the sun. The grove was quite beautiful, as a great deal of berries and plants grew around them. Even Rabsca, a seemingly expresionless Pokemon was happy as it hovered near Happy, expressing how at peace he was at the moment. Still, Happy was worried how Zachary would feel-- worried sick about them being missing. Every time Happy tried to slink away, Leafeon would spot him-- grab him like a baby Eevee, and plop him right back in the center of the grove. From the group, Rabsca and Swadloon soon approached Happy-- giving him some of the berries from the grove. Happy looked up at them and still gave a smile at them, grateful for the food. [break][break] However, as they enjoyed themselves in the garden with Leafeon looking over them-- Happy noticed something about Leafeon.[break][break]On its body, hidden by the leaves, were odd markings-- scars on its body.[break][break] Happy noticed those poor markings, showing that the Leafeon had been hurt a while, long time ago. As he noticed, the Shuckle also came over, peekings its head out of its shell to meet Happy. Happy too greeted the little shell Pokemon with a cheer, as they all snacked on the berries in the grove. [break][break]

[break][break] Josh and Zachary continued their trek. Dizzy now rode the Mightyena with Zachary while Josh rode his own-- and Spriggatito-- being anti dog at the moment, helped guide them through the forest as it would prance and look around for the Leafeon. [break][break] Of course, Spriggatito would get distracted by a fun little bug and chase it happily. [break][break] Dizzy would give a sharp bark, disapproving. [break][break] "Ugh... just how big is this forest? I wish we had more to go on to track them. " Zachary sighed, trying to contain his worry. [break][break] As they rode through, they soon found something--. [break][break] An old man, sitting on a cut down tree stump as it ate lunch. Next to him was a bag of herbs. He rose his bearded face up to the travelers, happy to see friendly faces. "Oh, hello there. " the man said with a happy greeting. "What brings you all out here. Not here to hunt Pokemon like many other reckless trainers, I hope," he said, a touch weary. [break][break] Zachary frowned. "N-no sir. We're just trying to find friend of ours. I came here to find some new Pokemon true, but I came here as a friend, not to fight them unless they want to." Zachary said as respectfully as possible. [break][break] The man's expression lightened up a bit with an 'aw'. "I see. That is good. Forgive me, I am more worried for your sake-- should you anger the Guardian of the Green." the man said. [break][break] "Guardian of the Green?" Zachary asked, confused. On a hunch, Zachary had to wonder ... "You by chance don't mean a certain large Leafeon? Pretty big, short tempered, defensive? " he asked. [break][break] The man nodded. "I guess you have encountered it. The poor thing is very sensitive, especially if any kind of hostility is around the forest." he explained. [break][break] The man clearly knew more about this Leafeon than they did. Perhaps he knew where it was-- or why it would behave like this. [break][break]

Josh guffawed at Zachary's descriptors of the Rustboro Captain. "Odd is certainly a way to put it. I know Sygna Suits let people do crazy things, but riding on a Venusaur's Vine Whip is beyond ridiculous. And not just anywhere, either - she sits as close to the tip of it as possible. How does she not just... wreck her spine every time?"

As they continued their search, Josh kept talking about the Rustboro Captain. "We've known each other since before we moved to Hoenn. Went to the same school together. I'm so proud of her for becoming leadership in the Rangers. But I digress. If there's anyone that can help you with your bug phobia, it's her." He and Screech continued to tail the grass-type, who seemed to have an idea where the Leafeon went. "She has one of every bug Pokémon that can wear a saddle. And they're the friendliest things ever. Imagine a Beedrill that just wants to give you a hug. Wild, but that's how hers is."

Josh listened to the mysterious old man's words once Zachary had engaged him. At one point he was skeptical of mystics, prophets, and the like. With him becoming increasingly involved in the supernatural, thanks to his work in SAPPHIRE as well as being close friends with multiple Avatars, he came around to being a believer. "...This is all my fault, Zachary. I'm so sorry," he apologized. It was one of the reasons there were very few people that could do both Ranger work and Gym Leader work with sufficient competence. Many of the skills needed did not overlap with one another. Josh's speed specialty gave him just enough overlap that he could do both.

Despite the sincere apology for Josh's recklessness, Zachary didn't blame or pay him too much mind. In the end, how could it have been predicted. Though perhaps getting his TYpe NULL to behave wouldn't have been the worst of ideas. Still, Zachary couldn't blame him too badly. In the end, Zachary blamed himself-- for being so scared of bugs it cost him loosing his Pokemon to that wild Leafeon. [break][break] It was then the older man began to explain. "As the rumor goes, many years ago, a trainer grew frustrated with his Eevee. Considering it a failure, it grew angry with the creature, and abandoned it. " the man explained. [break][break] A breath caught in Zachary's throat. "He just... abandoned it? Why would he do such a thing?" he asked, though in the end an obvious question of how cruel trainers could be. [break][break] The older man nodded. "At the time, many people didn't understand the evolutions of Eevees. This was around the time only people knew of three of their known forms. " he explained. Josh and Zachary would listen, as the sad tale unfolded. "Left alone in the woods, the poor Eevee worked to survive. It eventually became a Leafeon, but having been hurt by humans, its one kind nature was soured. However, now it seeks out other Pokemon, who have been hurt or injured by humans. It will respond to any form of aggression that humans have in the forest, seeing it as a threat. In the end, the poor thing is simply acting to not let others suffer the same cruelty it did." the man said. [break][break] Zachary's heart ached, not just for losing Happy or his fear-- but the Leafeon who now had his pokemon. In the end, it was just trying to protect them. And it had responded to Zachary's hostility towards the bugs around him, mistaking it for hostility. [break][break] "How horrible..." Zachary sighed, wishing he could help the poor Leafeon. The Spriggatito near them gave a sad meow, hearing the story too.[break][break] Dizzy's eyes snapped open and barked. He looked alarmed as he looked at Zachary, urging the boy to turn. [break][break] "Huh? Dizzy, something wrong?" Zachary asked. He looked behind him, seeing the fox point urgently to Zachary's back. Of course, Zachary couldn't see or understand the fox's barking. "What? Dizzy calm down. What are you trying to say?" he asked, unsure what he was pointing to. [break][break] As Zachary turned around, trying to figure out-- it revealed that something was on the back of his jacket. Slowly climbing up the blue fabric and on his back-- was a large Venepede. It had found its way onto Zachary's back and was slowly climbing up. Zachary's fear of bugs may of been a hinderance-- but a poisonous centepede-like Pokemon on his back would no doubt push him over the edge. [break][break] Dizzy soon got out his stick, and tried to poke the thing off, but it still clung to Zachary's back. [break][break] "Dizzy, stop poking me and--" Zachary turned to the other side, to soon see the antenna and face of the Venepede just looming over his shoulder. His face froze in shock as he soon saw the creature there. He became as still as stone, his body rigid. "EEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKK!!" He gasped, now scared stiff as he feared any rapid motion would get him stung. And fact was, he would be right. Josh had been trying to get his Type: Null to behave for months. Legendary Pokémon were just... built different. Obstinate. Subservience, rather than partnership, felt like the norm. It was part of why Laurence Anderson would blow a gasket once he found out about Raikou. "Been there, done that, Zachary. Crash, my Boltund, was an abandoned Pokémon. Giant for his kind, too. I'll have to show him to you sometime. It really isn't the Pokémon: it's the trainer. Some Pokémon just take... a lot of time." Even some of his ordinary Pokémon, like Bladestorm, his Skarmory, took months to break in before carrying Josh into the sky.

Josh's heart sunk when he heard the old man's story. Be was also aggressive toward the Leafeon... when it was just trying to defend itself and the haunted woods. "I had no way of knowing. Had I known its story, I never would have..." he trailed off before Zachary's scream interrupted him. Its source was a Venipede crawling up his back. Unlike Zachary, Josh seemed excited to see the poison-type, hurling a Poké Ball at it not to capture it, but to get it off the scared psychic trainer's back. He didn't expect to make a capture without a fight. Fire Eyes would be able to clean it up nicely if push came to shove, but he would rather solve the issue nonviolently.

Once he was done, whether he needed to battle the bug-type or not, the Gym Leader turned back toward Zachary. By now, he had caught on to the young man's fear of bug-types. "Here's the thing about bug-types, Zachary: most of the time, they won't bother you if you don't bother them. There are a couple that are really dangerous, like Beedrill, but if you gently shoo them, they'll get the message most of the time. Do you know who Shalin Nariya is?"

It took Zachary's self-restraint not to run around with that THING on his back. If it was a simple thing like a catterpie or something not dangerous, he wouldn't of reacted so badly. But those things were Poisonous!. Of course he would freak out. The moment Josh got it off his back, he finally sighed and stopped freaking out. He fell to his knees and panted, exhausted by the shock. In a patronizing way, Dizzy walked over to Zachary and with an embarrassed look, gently rubbed his trainer's back to help him calm down. The fox may of been embarrassed by his trainer's reaction to bugs-- but he knew how badly it was for Zachary and sympathized. [break][break] Spriggatito too had watched, and the little cat -- for better or worse seemed to be 'laughing' as it rolled on the grass, its arms and belly out as it caught stray flicks of sunshine. [break][break] Josh's explanation on bugs were pretty self-explanatory. In the end, Zachary knew more than often bugs were not violent in reality, but the poisonous ones were the ones he worried about. Specifically like Beedrill-- which Josh didn't know he had an encounter with before. Zachary turned over his shoulder to glare at Josh. "Yeah... you mentioned it," he replied at the mention of the ranger again. [break][break] The old man sat there, observing the two's interactions. If Zachary didn't know better, he could of seen the old man laughing a bit under his beard. "Well, you two are a lively pair. Ah youth..." he sighed with a pleasant tone. [break][break] As Zachary finally got his wits about him, seeing more bugs and birds nearby, he straightened himself out and continued. "Look, I really am sorry. And I get it, but there has been a misunderstanding. That Leafeon took my Mime Jr and Rabsca-- and I really do care about them. If you have ANY idea where this Leafeon is, can you show us please?" he said, expressing his sincereity. [break][break]Realizing the situation and the boy's fears, the old man nodded. "Yes... very well. The Leafeon doesn't go near humans but I have seen it. It will always go to the densest part of the woods. Go off the beaten path and find the thicket parts to push through. Rumor is, there is a special grove where it would make its home, along with other pokemon there. Just keep off the general paths and you should find it." the man explained, pointing to a dark corner of the woods. [break][break] With a direction to check and potentially a chance to find his lost Pokemon, Zachary felt a bit of his optimism return. "Thank you, sir. I really appreciate your kindness." Zachary said with a bow of respect to the older man. With that, he took off-- causing Dizzy and Spriggatito to follow him. [break][break]

Happy was in a pickle now, while Rabsca and the others got alone. Happy had tried to leave the grove three times... [break][break] And now he was 'grounded'. Having been tired of retrieving Happy, the large Leafeon now had a big paw on his back. Happy now was stuck, pinned there like a Pyroar disciplining a naughty cub. A soft sigh escaped the Mime jr, more embarrassed than troubled. [break][break] Swadloon would converse with the seemingly passive Rabsca, using Grass Whistle to share wonderful music in the grove. [break][break]

"We'll keep an eye out," Josh replied as he shifted in Screech's saddle. "Thank you."

Admittedly, the old man's vague help was less useful than the sound of the GRASS WHISTLE. The Gym Leader had heard that call before; his own Leafeon at one point knew the move, and he thought about teaching it to the grass-type again. "Zachary... that's got to be a Leafeon's Grass Whistle. We should follow it."

Josh had to be very careful about the way he controlled Screech; with too much force, the normal-type would zip away from his companion far faster than he could follow, yet he had to go fast enough that he could properly coax the Linoone to turn. He would need to spend some time experimenting with methods of controlling the sprinter next time he had significant downtime at his Gym. Perhaps some weekend when challenger volume was lower.
