The path to Fortree city was indeed a long road from Mt Pyre. And Slateport city. Even with Teleporting to get around, it taxed his Pokemon something fierce to have them teleport long distances like that. So naturally, Zachar took the routes to get places. There were trains that could take him there-- but for now, Zachary wanted to reach Fortree city. It was a beautiful city described in the books. A place where modern technology and nature somehow mixed together. It made Zachary curious, so he choose to walk there on foot and take in the feel of nature around him. [break][break] Besides him was his trusty companion-- Dizzy. His Delphox. The adventure loving, sassy fox kept Zachary company as they walked down the road leading to Fortree city. With all the greenery , riverside and forests-- Zachary and Dizzy felt happy there. They were in no rush to get anywhere. Of course they too had company. [break][break] Josh Devlin was also with them, keeping them company as he rode on one of his Pokemon. IT seemed they were going in the same direction, so why not travel together? [break][break]

After spending so much time in the Great Chasm, a leisurely ride alongside zachary stellar sounded like a great way to spend a day off. As long as he could keep Aleph under a fairly short leash, it would be a great day to even give riding lessons if he wanted them. It might be a bit hard of a sell, though; none of the Pokémon he brought with him were close to what one would call "traditional" for the task.

Beneath Josh was quite the large Linoone with an unusually high-sitting saddle, giving the Gym Leader the height off the ground needed to use the sprinting normal-type as a mount. Extending from the front of the saddle was a guard with a foam insert meant to catch him when Screech slammed on the brakes. "Alright, Screech, we're gonna work on your turning today."

On the Gym Leader's side was Fire Eyes, a Salazzle that hadn't seen too much action since their brief stint into Hoennian espionage and tactical disruption around the Second Battle of Dewford. The poison-type, too, wore an unusual saddle. "119 is one of my favorite routes to run," Josh struck up small talk with Zachary. "Every time I have to do Ranger patrol hours, I ask for this road. Even if the hours aren't great, I just love how good it is for going fast."

Of all the things that Josh choose to ride it was a Linoone ? Zachary had met the guy in Mt. Pyre, by pure chance. He was shocked to learn he wasn't just a ranger-- but also a Gym Leader of all things. It was a valuable experience to learn from him, especially since Zachary's goal was to become a Gym Leader himself someday. [break][break] Of course, Josh had a fondness for riding Pokemon. More specificaly flying and mounting ones to race. That kind of fixation was interesting but Zachary had no such Pokemon. As someone who was more comfortable with Psychic Types, he had no Pokemon whom he could ride. The closest one with his new Xatu-- but he was no taller than Zachary's hips. THe best the prophet bird could do, was lift him up by his talons as he would flap his wings. The best way Zachary had to really travel was teleporting-- but his psychic Pokemon would get tired well too often if he depended on them like that. [break][break] Sazazzel too was an odd one, and Dizzy kept a very sharp eye on that one-- not very trusting of the poison/fire hybrid. As Josh discussed the desire to use the roads for praticing his riding while on patrol, Zachary couldn't help they ran on different speeds-- in every sense of the word. "I take it 'taking things slow' isn't a metaphor to you," Zachary replied with a friendly sarcastic tone. "Why do you like riding your pokemon so much and going fast? I mean is it for the thrill of racing or something else? " he asked, trying to undestand his new friend. [break][break] Zachary was a more 'go with the flow' person, and that benefited him as a psychic trainer. He had to be patient when dealing with pokemon with such developed psyches. While he loved the idea of flying or moving fast, he had never expereinced that. [break][break] But teleporting was something else. That rush felt odd to Zachary and exciting. "What about Teleporting? How did you feel when we teleported out of Mt Pyre?" Zachary asked.

Zachary's question was one Josh got quite often. He laughed at the joke the young man cracked before addressing that question. "It's how I bond with my Pokémon on a level that combat alone can't reach," the Gym Leader answered. "When you're feeling every stride and every stroke of your mount's tail or wings, it feels like you and your mount are truly as one."

Screech walked alongside Zachary, keeping pace with him. "I've also loved fast Pokémon since I was a child. It's no secret now that I have an admiration for Raikou, one of the fastest Pokémon on land." If the psychic trainer knew Johtonian lore well, the phrase "one of" may have come as a wild surprise. Raikou was the Johtonian god of speed. What could possibly match the electric tiger in a race?

"No different than when I teleport there from my Gym with Braver for my...special Gym challenge," Josh answered. "It has its uses, but I prefer physical, material travel over astral travel. There's something about just feeling your Pokémon's muscles moving. Something about the wind in your face that makes riding special." Aleph's eyes were wide open, on the prowl for a Pokémon to rip apart. He had sparred with Jiujiu not long before coming here; satiated for the time being, he was content with fighting just about anything.

Zachary listened to Josh as he explained how he felt about riding Pokemon and going fast with them. The reason did have merit. It was no different how Zachary wanted to bond with his psychic types. TO be more in tune with them and even maybe share a psychic link with them someday. While Zachary felt he had a strong bond with Pokemon like Dizzy and Happy, it was more like simply knowing them rather than being connected to them in that way. It was still important and Zachary didn't want to dismiss Josh's reasons. It was noble all the same. [break][break] "You're right. I guess its no different how I want to develop a psychic bond with my pokemon. I just feel that way just being around and training them-- trying to understand them as people," Zachary said as he glanced to Dizzy at his side. Dizzy gave a happy, appreciative bark. Out of all his Pokemon, Dizzy was the most 'human' behaving of most, being very smart and having grew up close to Zachary as he worked his way through school. [break][break] Still, he did like the idea of having a pokemon to ride if he found one he liked. [break][break] As they passed by a grove of trees-- a rustle of activity caught their attention. Zachary paused as he looked, and Dizzy's ears went up in attention. Out came a flurry of some Pokemon. One was a Ladian, a big bugged eye bipedal bug-- and a odd little 'worm' wrapped in a leaf. As they scurried into their path, more so just playing around. They soon spotted the party of travelers, seemingly friendly. HOwever...[break][break] "BUGS!!" Zachary gasped and became rigid and stiff. His fright was now clear to Josh. [break][break] Dizzy sighed as he sagged his shoulders that said "Oh, here we go again..." if Josh could read the situation. [break][break] What Josh didn't know about Zachary was he had a very high fear of Bugs and bug-type Pokemon. He was very cool, and collected with many things. However, when bugs became a factor, Zachary became hyper and scared stiff at the thought of them climbing or attacking him. It even took Zachary a great deal of effort to take in a Rabsca-- a bug and psychic type. Point was, such bug types crept him out and it had become a strong phobia for him. [break][break] The little Swadloon, saw this, and blinked, unsure why the boy was so scared of it or the ladybug pokemon. Curled up in its leaf, it looked to it, but soon gave a happy greeting to him, Josh and Dizzy. Apparantly it was a friendly one, but Zachary slowly stepped away from them. [break][break] "P-Please don't eat me..." Zachary said more to himself than aloud. Hearing it, however, Dizzy gave an embarrassed leer to his partner.

It was one of the poetic realities of raising Pokémon: there was truly something for everyone. Zachary's remark of treating Pokémon like people resonated with the Gym Leader, making him feel warm inside. "You've... got the right attitude with Pokémon. There are too many awful people that want to use Pokémon just to make money."

The scream made it obvious to the Gym Leader that Zachary had a fear of bug Pokémon. Sensible for a psychic specialist. In other regions, many psychic specialists were psychics themselves, and knew just how disruptive the buzz of bug wings could be. "Screech, EXTREME SPEED!" Josh cried, pointing at the Ledian. The Linoone's paws vanished into a blur, Josh feeling like he was shot out of a cannon as the normal-type's tremendous acceleration blasted him back in the saddle. Screech's claws sliced toward the floating bug in a split second, the Ledian backing down.

With a loud squeal that sounded like tires on asphalt, Screech slammed on the brakes after his ultrafast attack, causing Josh to ragdoll forward in the saddle and bonk ino the foam guard on its end. Specifically designed to reduce head trauma as the normal-type killed its blistering land speed faster than any other land Pokémon could. The Gym Leader looked dazed and dizzy, Aleph bounding toward them to make sure his trainer was okay.

Josh's reckless speed racing drove off the lady bug, but not the Swanloon-- who looked up at the startled Zachary, almost a bit hurt. Her little eyes seemed sad with wanting. Dizzy, however, unafraid of such things, didn't hesitate as he knelt down and gave a greeting to the little leaf-wrapped bug. It encouraged a smile from the little Swanloon. [break][break] Zachary still kept his distance. He KNEW that his fear was not rational, but he still couldn't get over it. THough it was impressive his pokemon were not bothered by them, since bug types were indeed stronger against psychic pokemon like Dizzy was. [break][break] "I'd Wish you slow down to see that I'm in shock here!" Zachary gasped at Josh's reckless driving, in comedic fright. [break][break] Trying to regain some composure, Zachary leaned against a giant mushroom that was part of the forest landscape. Being a big, red looking cushon that felt soft... [break][break] Of course he had no clue he was leaning against a giant Parasect. The moment it shifted-- Zachary jumped and looked, to see the giant mushroom move and the pincer and spiky legs of the Parasect looking up. [break][break] "GRREEAAAAHHH!!" Zachary gasped, jumping away from it. [break][break] Slightly startled but unbothered, the Parasect began to move away-- probably its own version of running away on its little legs with its big body. [break][break] As Zachary shivered uncontrollably-- Dizzy frowned, embarassed. The fox had enough and figured it was time for an intervention. [break][break] Rising up he took his stick and blew out the flame. As Zachary shivered, the fox took the blunt end of the stick and gave Zachary a not-so-gentle bonk of the head. [break][break] "OW!" Zachary gasped, snapped out of his fear to see the fox hit him with the stick. "What was that for, Dizzy! You taking lessons from Tarot now?!" he argued. [break][break] Dizzy gave a growl, and a few barks trying to show Zachary was being silly and rude being so scared of Swadloon, as the little bug stood there, showing her interest in Zachary. [break][break] Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Dizzy crossed over and dug through Zachary's pockets. As the fox did, he soon took out a few Pokeballs, containing Happy, and Rabsca. [break][break] The fox soon tossed them to the ground, and they snapped open, revealing both Happy and Rabsca. [break][break] "Mimimime!" Happy cheered as he emerged from the light. This was the first time Josh would get to meet one of Zachary's first pokemon-- a little Mime Jr. [break][break] The other one was one he got when they were at Mt. Pyre. A lucky find of a Rabsca-- a fully evolved bug and psychic type who was mysterious by nature-- and had a fondness for Zachary. However, it took Zachary a great amount of fear to get over the fact it was a bug-- and to accept its friendship. [break][break] "Dizzy, why are you doing this? " Zachary asked, and the fox gave some firm barks, pointing between Dizzy and Rabsca, showing that they were getting along-- and so should Zachary and the other bugs. [break][break] Josh probably could better understand what they were doing. An 'intervention' of sorts, as Happy didn't hesitate to waddle over to Swadloon. The little clown gave a happy cheer as if to say 'hello, nice to meet you,' and the Swadloon gave a happy chirp back. [break][break] Rabsca of course, remained still and observant but floated in mid-air by psychic power, holding its precious cargo with its pincers. [break][break]

The intensity with which Screech decelerated made Josh's legs feel like jelly. After coming to his senses, the rider stayed seated on Screech until feeling started to return to them. The Linoone shuffled his feet, slowly changing direction toward where Zachary was cowering in fear of the Parasect. He took off again once they were just wide of a collision course with the young trainer.

Seeing how much trouble the psychic trainer was in, Josh lcicked open Fire Eyes' Poké Ball, the saddle-wearing giant lizard brandishing her FIRE LASH once. That was all it took to get the Parasect to back down. The Swadloon would be wary and skittish in the lizard's presence, as well, though Fire Eyes would not slash with her cutting, blazing tongue. "You okay, Zachary?" Josh asked. "Parasect can be a bit tough to identify in the wild, especially if they're sleeping."

Josh watched the Mime Jr. and the Rabsca at play with the Swadloon. "Are these two Pokémon yours, too? They're brave little ones!" That play would be interrupted by the sound of a loud crash: Aleph and Fire Eyes were getting into it, sparring with one another. And it didn't look for play, either. "...Not again!" Josh groaned, directing his attention back to his Type: Null.

THe Paracest may of been dangerous. Zachary felt it was, but it was seemingly dosile. To Dizzy, he KNEW it wasn't a threat. Pokemon, even bug-type Pokemon rarely just lashed out unprovoked. Not without reason. Dizzy cast an angry snarl at Josh-- finding his attack-first, ask questions later method-- not helping the issue. [break][break] The goal was to help Zachary break his fear of bugs. Happy and Rabsca knew this, especially Rabsca as to how scared Zachary was of it-- which hurt its feelings if it could show it. While the beetle pokemon was indeed mysterious, Happy got a feel for the emotions around him, as did Dizzy. Happy approached Swadloon, trying to converse. Seemingly shy, Swadloon tucked its mouth behind its leaf-- and soon began to produce soothing sounds. Leaf Whistle, from the sound of it. While not intending to cause sleep, Happy swayed to the tune, liking it. Soon the little mime took a leaf from a nearby shrub and used its Mimic to play along with her. The two soon created a symphony of a light tune, showing a sense of serenity. [break][break] Their unique show of music did put Zachary at ease as he relaxed a bit. He always enjoyed soothing music and these two had an oddly modern form of musical talent. "Wow... well I knew that Happy loved music but that's cool." Zachary said. [break][break] Dizzy soon pointed his stick to Happy and Swadloon. If the two could get along over their love of music, why were bugs so scary? At least, that was what Dizzy wanted to come across to Zachary with. Zachary was quiet, realizing that point as well, that Swadloon was not a vicious or man-eating bug. [break][break] Just then, there was a sudden disturbance in the forest as a rush of wind and growl carried on it. [break][break] The forest almost heaved-- and out came an very large, green beast! Of all things, out came charging out and growled-- was a Leafeon of all things! "A LEAFEON?!" Zachary cried, both in surprise, and awe. He soon took up his Pokedex reader and analyzed it. [break][break]

Leafeon, the Verdant Pokemon. One of Eevee's evolutions with a leaf stone. It is a normally gentle, dosile creature. It's cellular structure is close to that of a plant's. It uses photosynthesis to absorb sunlight and create fresh air. It often is used for a variety of fragrances.

[break][break] "Grrrrrrr!!!" the Leafeon snarled, clearly showing it wasn't so peaceful as the pokedex described. One, it was unusually hostile as it glared at Josh and his pokemon, because how they were now fighting and causing wanton damage around them! Two-- this one was large. Leafeon were the size usually no bigger than a person's hips, but this one was like as big as one of Josh's "Pyroars". By whatever reason, it had grown big and strong-- and clearly had a beef with them. [break][break] "W-wait! Calm down. I don't wanna fight you! " Zachary shouted back, keeping his hands up. While not afraid of such a beautiful and rare Pokemon, he didn't want to fight. Even now as he struggled with his phobia of bugs, Leafeon was not one to listen. [break][break] its eyes would look to Swadloon, Happy and Rabsca, as if concern for their well being. While Zachary didn't present much danger to it, it was more angry at Josh and his aggressive pokemon being a risk to the forest. It even cast a growl at Dizzy! Why? Probably cause he was a fire type in a forest. [break][break] The fox just looked as defensive and concerned as Zachary was. [break][break]

Josh didn't even bat an eye at the size of the Leafeon. While they were rarer than standard-sized ones, finding Basil, his own Leafeon mount, wasn't too difficult. With Space-Time Distortions popping up routinely, getting ahold of overly large Pokémon was far easier than in other regions. Without them, he never would have had his entire rainbow of Eeveelutions. When was someone going to bring an Eeveelution to his Gym, anyway? It wasn't exactly advertised like his other challenges; an Easter egg he had hidden many moons ago, still undiscovered.

Perhaps it was a good thing that Aleph was distracted by Fire Eyes, the two going at it. It was a play-fight, as violent as it looked seeing the two sling attacks back and forth at one another. The longer the fight went on for, the farther away from the Leafeon they got. Sensing the Type: Null's demeanor, the Gym Leader chose to let it ride rather than withdraw his ornery partner.

Josh and Screech simply watched from a distance, intrigued at how well Zachary was appealing to the wild's emotions. To be able to befriend Pokémon outside combat was an invaluable Ranger still. One he would have to ask the lad about...
