Splatter. A Scream Tail let out a howl as it disappeared under the uncaring heel of a massive Golurk.

Thud. Splatter. It was unfair how easy it was to snuff life from this chasm, from the world at large. Nothing in this chasm deserved to exist, yet that didn't change the fact that it did. Paradox Pokemon roamed in droves, and many were bold enough to strike at Rocket and their various outposts. Sometimes, they had to be culled.

Why couldn't they be culled by someone stronger, like one of the Beasts? Howard hated the battlefield, and it didn't help that he had a colleague today.

"I hate this job. Diana, how many Paradox Pokémon have we dealt with? I've lost count." The admin said casually, as if he himself wasn't keeping track. They had been at this for hours, now. After a moment, he kneeled down in the dirt and inspected it. "We better not have lost track of that Walking Wake, I swear..."

A large footprint drilled into the ground, belonging to the Walking Wake that claimed this swath of territory. Incidentally, this area was also subject to a personal interest of the admin. Namely, its tremors and quakes, alongside sightings of a Pokémon he was very interested in. If he could catch up with it...

"Damn. Big fella." Despite that, he sounded disappointed. "If only it was..."

"You mean I was supposed to count?" she asked, incredulity lacing her tone.

However, she was given a moment's repose as Howard knelt to examine the footprints on the ground. Diana placed her hands on her knees, catching her breath as her ALTARIA flapped her wings idly beside her.

Something caught her eye. A large, aqua feather laying on the ground, leading toward a cave.

"Howard, look." Diana picked it up, extending her hand. "It's the same color as the beast. And it looks like it was going toward that cave."

He looked at the feather with the keen gaze of an appraiser. Remiel Calcifet would've been better at identifying the intricacies of the beast's biology, given his specialty. Nonetheless, Howard was no slouch. In Rocket, he was second to none in this field.

"Looks right." He nodded in approval as stood and stretched, lithe as a cat. "Good eye. Looks like a Walking Wake. I hate Walking Wakes."

Out of the three mockeries of Johto's Legendary Beasts, Walking Wakes were the most dangerous to fight in Howard's opinion. Raging Bolts were hindered by their lengthy neck, and Gouging Fire's quadrupedal nature meant that it occasionally struggled to traverse the cliffs of the Giant Chasm.

Walking Wake was just a pain in the ass. Defeating one took a ton of grunts, and occasionally a Rocket Beast. Howard wasn't cut out for combat, hopefully Diana was.

His eye flicked to Diana catching her breath. They were both gonna die.

"I was hoping it'd be Regirock, but..." The admin shrugged, well versed with disappointment after years of job hunting before Rocket. "...this will suffice. Let's deal with it and get back. I've got Tera Crystals to transport, and I need to call Graves and Calcifet back for a field report."

Calcifet. There was a lot of emotional baggage in that one word for both parties. Nonetheless, Howard gritted his teeth and dealt with it. Nobody had told him that juggling an active employment with GIDEON GRAVES and Rocket would take up so much time and energy.

"Let's go." Howard yawned. "Caught your breath?"

Perhaps Diana would have to tell Remiel Calcifet about her exploits in seeing a WALKING WAKE in person. That is, if she and howard slayte survived the day.

"Ready as I'll ever be, I suppose." Diana had done well in the Vital City Tournament, but she'd never extended fighting prowess outside of battle matches such as those. Still, she was determined.

Entering the cave, it was dark, only illuminated with the light of her ROTOM phone. Soon enough, giant crystalline structures appeared, glowing their own light. It would be a magical sight —

If not for the Paradox Pokemon waiting for them.

There were a lot of bodies on the ground. There were always a lot of bodies wherever these things went.

Unbeknownst to both of then, the League's strongest trainers had once convened for an assembly. That assembly had been broken up by a Walking Wake, which had then taken a mountain of punishment from members of the Elite Four, the Head Rangers, and the Council. It had been a great battle that had ended with a lot of screaming.

This battle had ended the same.

Howard stepped over a dead ranger as he and Diana looked up at the Walking Wake, which let out a guttural roar as it lumbered forward, crushing corpses and crystals as the cavern rumbled under its tremendous weight. It reminded Howard of his true target, but this one was much more hideous.

Paradox Pokémon were abominations, and those that mocked the past even more so. They did not have the right to exist.

"Atlas, get back." A flash of light emerged from Atlas's Pokeball as the Golurk returned. In its place, Howard threw out a Pokeball that glistened with frost. If Howard was good at one thing, it was knowing when he was outmatched. "You're up!"

The cavern instantly began to freeze as Regice emerged from its Pokeball, a thin layer of ice spreading from its feet across the cavern walls. For a moment, the Walking Wake seemed unsure, as if contemplating attacking. "I hate my job..."

The Walking Wake lunged at Diana and her Altaria, spittle flying.

[attr="class","diana"]The cave held an unwelcoming presence: bodies, scattered about. There was a metallic scent in the air, one that Diana found herself growing more familiar with day by day as one of team Rocket's lackeys.

And, in front of them, the beast.

It regarded them with a calculated look, examining them both closely while deciding what move to make. Perhaps WALKING WAKE was trying to figure out who was the strongest of the two.

Or vice versa — who'd be the easiest to take out before expending all of its energy in an all out battle?

Ice began to coat the ground, as Diana noticed REGICE standing in front of howard slayte. As for her:

An attack. "Cadbury!" Gnashing teeth went for her; however, Cadbury's COTTON GUARD set up a defensive barrier as the ALTARIA protected her trainer. There was an angry squawk from the dragon as its head shook, flailing the bird-like body in the air.

She attacked, using a DRAGON BREATH to direct a shot straight in their opponent's face.

From personal experience, Howard knew that biting into cotton was rough business. The Walking Wake would be picking that from its teeth for weeks, assuming it lived that long. As it reeled back from biting into the fluffy barrier, its face was burned from the incoming Dragon Breath.

Yet that wouldn't kill. Far from it. Instead, it seemed to make the walking dinosaur even angrier. As a part of its cheek bubbled from the burning strike, its maw opened as it let out a Flamethrower as hot as the sun. Cotton burned when exposed to such temperatures, and it would keep getting hotter as it bathed Cadbury in scorching hot flame.

So focused on Diana it was that the giant in the room went ignored. A decision that would cost the beast highly.

By choosing to attack Diana, it had forgotten about Howard. As the Flamethrower kept getting hotter, the Walking Wake barely had a second to react as a Hyper Beam blasted it into the cave wall with tremendous force. Area Zero shuddered as the Walking Wake tried to extract itself from the cave wall.

"Nice! Keep it there while Regice fires agai-" Howard turned to his golem, which was oddly still after the attack. It flashed a pattern at the two Rockets. ⠗⠑⠉⠓⠁⠗⠛⠊⠝⠛.

"It's winded from a single Hyper Beam, now? You're so low on energy all the time. What gives?"

[attr="class","diana"]While the DRAGON BREATh ensured that Cadbury would be freed — if the mouth full of cotton didn't already — another onslaught of attacks was launched at the dragon. The WALKING WAKE'S anger was targeted to Diana and her Pokemon only.

howard slayte seemed to be an after thought.

Burned, singed cotton scented the cavern, angry squawking coming from the blue bird as she flapped her wings in panic. Her cottony coat was ablaze, as Diana was quick to release her TATSUGIRI to extinguish the flames with a weakened WATER PULSE.

REGICE'S attack caught it off guard, sending it flying into the wall. It was cartoonish how it seemed splattered there, unmoving for a few moments as it tried to regain its power.

"Wait, that's all it can do?" she asked in exasperation.

"You and me both. It's just tired. Let it recharge!"

The admin said defensively. It was a weapon of war, a pristine artifact that represented an era that had long since passed. It had been made by Hoenn's progenitors—Howard's ancestors—while Galar waged war on Eternatus. He was defensive of it, even if he disregarded it as a Pokémon sometimes.

Diana was right to be disappointed in its performance, though. Both it and the Walking Wake. It was just so low on energy...

He'd kick the golem if it wouldn't give his foot frostbite.

The Walking Wake's Hydro Steam met with the Water Pulse as it extracted itself from the wall. Rocks rumbled and rattled as it continued to hound the grunt. The stench of dragons transcended past and future. It was eternal. Meanwhile, Regice's eyes blinked as it finished recharging.

"Hyper Beam!" Howard shouted as his golem charged up its latent Dynergy and Infinity Energy into a great beam of power. "Give me a hand, Diana!"

The beam fired, its light reflecting on the various Tera Crystals into a glorious halo of light.

[attr="class","diana"]"While I'm sure I would appreciate a nap as much as it would, we have our hands tied at the moment!" she hissed in frustration.

Her ALTARIA'S cottony down was frazzled, with a few pieces missing from the WALKING WAKE'S FLAMEFLOWER. Luckily, her skin remained in tact, though the previous COTTON GUARD was spent. Diana decided to draw her back into her Poke ball, allowing her ability to take effect and heal the dragon to be used again later.

Though it appeared that Porridge's WATER PULSE helped bring some damage to their opponent. It was rising back to its feet, and Diana was bracing for another attack when-

"Finally."

Another attack from REGICE. "Attack!" Porridge attacked, using DRAGON PULSATING energy to weaken the beast as the ice-beast attacked with its HYPERBEAM.

The strikes landed as the cave system trembled. Rocks fell from the ceiling as Tera Crystals let out their usual mysterious sheen. The Walking Wake let out a ferocious roar as it pushed back against the combined attack, extracting itself from the wall with the manic fury of a creature that did not want to disappear quietly.

Thud. Thud. Thud. The water from Porridge's Water Pulse dripped from the dinosaur, before freezing in Regice's presence. An ordinary Pokemon would've curled up and died from multiple blasts from a Legendary Pokémon, but this one refused to die.

The desire to live outweighed death.

"You shouldn't exist. There's no record of you existing. Farewell, and good day." Howard's voice was cool as his eye flicked to Diana. The Walking Wake peered at him, before deciding that testing itself against Regice wasn't ideal.

It lunged at Diana. As it took a step, its leg collapsed into a glimmering light akin to the Tera Crystals that surrounded it. Next went its limbs, its body, and finally its head. As it faded into a glimmering bokeh, it stared up at Diana.

Why? Its primal gaze demanded, before finally vanishing into light.

"Good riddance." Howard frowned as it vanished. He wasn't upset when it perished. It had come into existence from nothing, fully born with not a single memory to its name. There was nothing to be sad about its passing, when it had been born under identical circumstances.

"Let's go."
