Lutgarde hopes the kids would be alright ... but there's not much to do for them now, so they return to Lavaridge's downtown area where they believed to have seen most of the victims. Their heart's unusually heavy, always is when there's surges of these Toxic Chains, whether it be pokémon or humans ...

Their expression lightens up a bit, however, as they spot a familiar figure in the distance. It's been a bit of time since they've seen them at the tournament, but it'd be hard to forget Navy and Roland, frankly. (Also, they finally looked up who's in the League-League of the region - yeah, they somehow forgot doing that during their journey from Kalos to Hoenn.)

Nonetheless, their demeanour isn't different from before as they wave and smile, faintly, "Hey there, Navy! Also on duty?" they ask.

They meet again in the middle of this poisoned town. It is a full-time job, helping these people. The townsfolk dance their macabre dance, just down the street in the quarantine zone. Infected humans and infected Pokemon alike need rescue. Together, Navy and the sporty pathfinder will get them out.[break][break]
“Yo.” His greeting here is just as informal as the one given before. “Pleasure to see you again. Lutgarde, right?” Their name is striking, unique. Lutgarde is blessed with a name that sticks out in the mind. No mere Jane, John, or Jenny.[break][break]
“Looks like we’ve got our work cut out for us today.” When most people say that, in circumstances like these, it’s said with fear or weariness. Navy sounds like he’s sipping cool liquid around the work water cooler. It is a matter of grave importance to him, protecting these people, but he does not fear being attacked. Pain and Navy are old friends. Roland knows loss too, as evidenced by the missing arm. His machine eyes scan the horizon while the humans talk.[break][break]

Lutgarde's weak smile seems to brighten just a bit (okay, quite a bit, actually) as Navy also remembers their name. "Exactly, glad you remember," they say, then turn slightly to see the "dancing" townsfolk. Sylph's working Air Slashes carefully, but it's only with Sylv's guidance (who, of course, still is attached to Lutgarde by one ribbon) that she actually succeeds - she's not of a gentle disposition when it comes to this, but at least her Life Dews also proof equally effective.

They give Roland a nod as well, before turning to Navy with a somewhat ... surprised look. They've mostly heard weary people these days, including themself against what they truly want to be like. It's draining, after all, seeing all those masses succumb to ... something without quite figuring out what and how. But it's not a bad thing - in fact, they feel some of their tension dissipate in the casual tone of voice, and nod. "Yep, we definitely do ... and well, I honestly couldn't even imagine how messy it is," they laugh, quietly, like a sharp exhale.

"Have you lived here your whole life?" they wonder. "Has it always been like this?" Their gaze lingers with Roland then once more, the implication of their casual chatter back at the tournament in their mind still, too. And well ... they've read more on Iron Valiants, and they seem ... fascinating.

“No,” he says somberly, “it wasn’t always like this. Lived here my whole life.” Roland does not detect the nuances of that statement, or why Navy looks to him while it is said. Roland is too busy with his craft. Dancers gather around him. They twirl, singing their Mochi song and inviting all present to join the endless dance.[break][break]
Precise cuts of the blade put an end to that dream. They still dance, for the poison is still in their system, but they can be restrained and cured without spreading the sickness further. Sickness, as certain firebrands love to insist, must be purged.[break][break]
“’Fore Rocket invaded Slateport, it was just like anywhere else. Had its secrets. There was this thing with a Regirock, just before Rocket attacked. Hoenn changed. And now,” his eyes find Lutgarde’s, looking serious, “it changes you. Roland was a Gallade, once upon a time.” A scientist would insist that is not precisely true. A dead Gallade fell into the mist while a Gardevoir wept. Out walked a chrome warrior.[break][break]
It is a narrative that soothes a grieving soul, if nothing else.[break][break]
“But change ain’t always a bad thing.” A Mochi dancer lunges to grab Navy, but Roland’s blade steps them in their tracks. Its flat slaps their temple, sending them to the ground.[break][break]
“Just know it’s coming, if you don’t head for greener pastures.”

Lutgarde's eyes follow Navy's, resting on the Iron Valiant. There's somewhat of a comfort in knowing that, even in a different timeline, perhaps, this one is still known for exceptional bravery, even if a simple, digital expression has a hard time conveying this. They're mesmerised by his movements, precise and fluent, not like some "robots" they've seen before. And also, with the soul of an actual pokémon. They find themself fixed on Roland, observing him closely.

"A real case of 'first we shape the things, and then these shape us' - or something along those lines," Lutgarde replies with a faint smile, taking a deeep breath at the idea, now stated explicitly with no room for doubt, if a Gallade would actually turn into Iron Valiant. They believe it; why should it exactly be impossible in such a region of turmoil?

It's like gods descended here and decided to make it their stage.

"Always gotta be on the move here, huh," they say, and nod. "I gotta say, I might've grown complacent before," they admit, their voice unnaturally quiet compared to its usual booming volume.

Roland’s pixelated eyes settle on Lutgarde. He says nothing, for Pokemon seldom say anything. He looks on the cadet with passive interest.[break][break]
“What’s your angle in all this? What’re you after? Cash? Fame? Power? Plenty of all three here, I guess, but there’s plenty more somewhere like Unova.” Somehow, he finds it hard to believe his own words. Cash stops spending when you die. Power is one thing, but Hoenn offers power and fame alike that transcend the realm of common sense. In this age of heroes, those who excel will be remembered as demigods.[break][break]

Lutgarde's still smiling, but it tilts to the side, nodding. "I can imagine, but ... only that. Kalos's rather ... quiet, all things considered." Of course, never without anything bigger going on, but everything pales in comparison to how set Rocket has been on Kanto - and how they succeded - and the turmoils waging war in this region.

As they notice Roland's gaze, they nod ever so slightly, holding it with open curiosity, before turning to Navy. Their laughter is short and dry at his question, "What a loaded question." They do not seem averse to answer it, however, as silence descends, only filled in by the sounds of their surroundings.

But here, next to the battle-savy trainer, it's ... not peaceful. But almost ordinary - not quite. They do not really have the words to describe, they just know it's welcome, like being allowed a breath when drowning in everything that's been happening.

"I'm not sure if it's any of these in particular," they eventually start, slowly. There's a swirl, made up of all the things they don't want to confront about themself. And some that they hold in front of them every day in front of the mirror. "Think one way to put it, I've felt stuck in Kalos, in ... multiple ways."

“Heh. Think that’s just how everyone gets about where they’re from.” Roland strikes like a coiled Arbok, lashing at a dancing townsperson that wandered too close. It falls, sizzles, breaks. Navy’s tiny Greninja appears from nowhere, secures them, runs away with the human in tow.[break][break]
“Back in the day, I felt that way ‘bout Slateport. It’s a big city, but it’s got no soul. Just a big cage, keeping everyone trapped there. Everybody wanting to be somebody.” ‘Til, eventually, he decided to move away, start again. Woke up in a new life, down by the seaside.[break][break]
“It’s always nice to get away from home, huh? Go somewhere new. Become whoever you wanna be.” His voice is filled with optimism. That move feels like decades ago for him. “How’d you end up doing in the tournament by the way? Maher swept the whole dong thing.” He grumbles at them, a hint of childish annoyance that he didn’t get the gold trophy.

There's part of Lutgarde that always bristles a bit when it's everyone like that. They've learned to straigthen quickly, but a moment of void always manifests, before they smile, and laugh quietly. "Gotta be idle for change to kick in, maybe?" they say, before frowning. "That was a rather small Greninja ... if I even saw one at all." The townsperson isn't there anymore, at least, which should be proof that something happened after Roland freed another victim.

Another moment of void, but this time, their expression softens. "And can you blame them?" They don't immediately elaborate, but speak up again after a few seconds, "It's hard to put in words, but ... I like cities," they laugh, "with their ups and downs. But where did it draw you?" they ask then, curious. They've been pulled from the country to the city, but it seems like Navy's case is opposite to that.

At the optimism in his voice, they feel themself feel lighter, too, and smile. Yeah, this situation is bad, but - there's hope. And by Arceus, they'd keep it alive. "Truly, can't deny that," they laugh, "My gran's always said, Home's for seeing how you've changed." The question about the tournament makes them grin, "Honestly? I kinda just wanted to do a first grocery run when everyone's been fighting, so I was, hey, let's join. A nice housewarming gift from the city," they laugh. "You were quite impressive, too. Sad we didn't get to finish our fight, but hey, can always battle again?"

“You’re always welcome down at my gym if you want training. Sounds like you’re pretty married to city life, but a little seaside vacation never hurt anybody.” Besides, they’d fit right in down in Dewford…if the sun didn’t turn them into a sweat factory, what with all the black clothing. “I’m still the gym leader for another month. Always happy to take challengers.” His gym can be a bit grueling, but he’s sure they’ll manage.[break][break]
People are being hauled away around them. Their allies sigh with relief. Their enemies, those flying under Rocket’s flag, seem to be staying away. Navy isn’t going to look that gift Ponyta in the mouth. Even in this extraordinary situation, things almost feel…[break][break]
…normal.[break][break]
Right up until he feels a familiar wave of fatigue hit. Luckily, they’re near a bus stop when it happens. Navy helps himself to a seat before his Pokemon have to rescue him again. Even with proper precautions taken, the toxic chain is debilitating to be around.[break][break]
“Word to the wise…don’t stay here for long. Short bursts, rotate out with the other rangers. It’s bad for your health.” Steadying his breathing, he looks at the road back to base. “We’ll head back in a minute, yeah? ‘Bout time for someone else to take over.”
