Swift's purr made every hair on Josh's body stand on end, his skin tingling from the thunder-like reverberation on a windy, but otherwise pleasant, day. The Knight of Thunder was ready to bolt forward, putting his legendary steed's speed to the test. There was still so much he had to learn about the Beast before he could rely upon him in combat, and the first thing he wanted to learn was what Swift's speed limit was in straight lines. 117's enormous fields would have been ideal, but they were too close to densely-populated cities. The rural highway 101 was his next best choice.

Unbeknownst to him, lam logan had also become a knight. Knight of Leaves, Verdant Knight, whatever title Virizion had bestowed upon him, they both had their hands in the cookie jar that was the supernatural now. The familiar face would come as quite the surprise...

In the time that had passed since that trip to Mt. Chimney, Lam hadn’t called upon Virizion that often. The realization that the Sword of Justice had actually bestowed a portion of its favor was still a surreal thing to him. When he’d parted ways with the rest of the group, the lava flow safely diverted from the town below, he had expected that to be it. Matias was the sword’s knight, after all. Lam had just been…helping.[break][break]
But then the leaf had appeared in his pocket.[break][break]
He hadn’t found it until after he’d returned home. Having proven to his fiancé that yes, he was still in one piece, it slipped out of his coat and drifted in a lazy spiral toward the floor. Even then, with that token, he’d hesitated.[break][break]
Eventually, it was curiosity that drew him to Route 101—the grassy stretch seemed like a decent enough place to let the leaf loose on the breeze. He felt sort of stupid, because maybe it was just for emergencies, or something? But Virizion still appeared, all the same, a brighter green than the soft grass beneath its feet.[break][break]
"Hello again." It trotted around him, a showy display of itself before pressed his palm to the center of its head in polite greeting. The both of them soon distracted by the unexpected, ashen blur that shot by.

Josh leaned into the wind, his ashen Beast bouncing him about the grey thundercloud vigorously. The speedy tiger's strides shook him with earthquake-like force, rattling his limbs as he held on for his life through the acceleration. Just as the Raikou started to level off his speed, he caught a glimpse of Virizion's face.

Pulling back on the outer tufts of Swift's thundercloud to slow him down, the deceleration process was equally long. Not because Swift was slow at getting up to speed or shedding speed; those pointed claws were excellent at speed control. Coming to a stop took quite a bit of time because the Raikou's speed was that high. The Beast purred toward Virizion, Josh still coming down from the adrenaline rush that was all too familiar. He faced Virizion and Lam, greeting them, "Hey, Matias! What are you doing out here? I thought you were supposed to be under--"

He couldn't finish that sentence; he was in disbelief at seeing the Lilycove Gym Leader standing next to the Sacred Sword.

"...Lam?!"

He’d read the report, of course. So he was aware of the ashen beast in Josh’s company. It was still a crazy sight to see in person, though. “That’s some steed,” he joked, a grin pulling across his mouth as he looked up at the other gym leader and squinted against the sun.[break][break]
“Matias?” he echoed, confused. He was nowhere near as tall or stacked as the other man. Maybe Josh had been going a bit too fast on Raikou’s back, or maybe he needed to get his eyes checked?[break][break]
Then it clicked.[break][break]
“That’s my name,” he quipped. Beside him, Virizion eyed a nearby lurantis. But the grass-type soon drifted away, avoiding clashing blades with the Viridescent Sword. Oh, right.[break][break]
“Just hanging out with my new bud, Virizion!” he made light of it, laughing as Virizion gave him a look. Buds? But that was Lam—elevating most moments to some degree of levity.

"Oh, is he ever!" Josh cheered back. "It's hard to find places in Hoenn that are rural enough for me to practice with him." Swift's monochrome eyes shifted toward the Viridescent Knight, then Virizion's. "Sounds like we're both successors in different ways. Last time I saw Virizion, they were with Matias. That's what had me confused. Sorry!"

Hoenn's legendary Pokémon sure were on the move, looking for new allies. First, Raikou from Kyle to Josh, and now Virizion from Matias to Lam. "Great to see you again, too, Virizion! Would love to show you how much my skills have improved!" He had fond memories of shooting across 123 on the Sacred Sword's back, twirling dizzily as the grass-type rocked him with their extreme agility.

It was the last pleasant memory he had of Matias.

"Right, I-I forgot to introduce you to him," Josh stammered in the Sacred Sword's premise. "His name's Swift." The Raikou loosed a loud, tickling purr that sounded like a distant rumble of thunder.

“I’ll bet! I’d guess it doesn’t take too long to travel most places with him.” Virizion remained stalwart alongside Lam, head held high and proud, though Lam himself remained relaxed in his posture. He waved a hand, “Nah, it’s all good. I mean, technically, Virizion still finds favor with Matias too.” He glanced over at it, then back to Josh, recalling his recent conversation with MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]
About how Virizion seemed content to have more than one knight in its stead.[break][break]
Granted, he still found his own merit to be considered as much a stretch. But that’s why– “I’m just trying to get to know it a bit better, y’know?” [break][break]
A smoliv scampered through the field. Not quite paying attention to its surroundings, it ran smack into Virizion’s leg and rolled backward. The sword of justice needn’t even level an attack to subdue the poor, anxious thing. Its face contorting in frantic upset, and whole body trembling as the larger creature did no more than peer down at it curiously.[break][break]
Laughing, Lam bent forward and scooped it up. “Aw, you meant Virizion no harm,” he consoled it, giving the top of its head a few reassuring pats.[break][break]
He glanced back up, though, as Josh spoke again. “Swift,” he echoed, regarding the ashen beast with a degree of reverence. “Fitting name.” The rumbling purr made him smile wide, and Virizion’s head nodded at the manifestation of raikou in its own show of respect.

"Not at all," Josh replied, his smile growing to a grin as his thoughts wandered to the Galar Memory, recalling how he cleaved through Slowbro after Slowbro with his electric sword that took full advantage of the very steed he rode upon. "Remember Braver? When he's going at full Extreme Speed and Swift can still pass him up... yeah." With Swift in his direct care now, he wondered...

Would the Raikou be able to go even faster now that he was the Pokémon's bearer?

Josh was surprised to hear that Matias remained in Virizion's good graces, though he did not say anything in front of the Sacred Sword. "Just like I'm trying to get to know Swift," he related his story. "I was just telling Virizion that my skills as a rider have vastly improved. Did I tell you I got to take them for a run once while they were under Matias' care? They're... really fast."

Lam whistled low. “That’s some engine.” He shook his head in disbelief, except of course he could believe it from a legendary–even an ashen incarnation of the original. Still, it was a bit mind boggling to consider.[break][break]
“Yeah! Just like that.” Though Virizion didn’t stay with Lam at all times. They came when he called them through the magical leaf, though. They hadn’t denied him yet. But he also hadn’t attempted to summon them more than he felt necessary. Should he make a more routine habit of it? Maybe…[break][break]
He was still new and uncertain in the connection–that was what it boiled down to.[break][break]
“Are they?” he mused aloud as Josh noted the Sword’s apparent swiftness. “I wasn’t aware, but I can’t say I”m surprised.” He cast a sideways glance at Virizion as he spoke, and they stood taller, verdant head lifting proudly as they preened a bit under the acknowledgement of their skills.[break][break]
“I can’t imagine how much more you can tolerate, though, if you say you’ve improved. Dunno how you have the stomach for it.”

If Raikou was an engine, his roar was louder than a race car at full throttle, the tires that were his claws screeching at even the slightest turn from the surreal speed he achieved. "And he can't even Quick Attack yet." It brought to mind how sick he got after being onboard for one of Rayquaza's meteoric dives. Even with the gravity surrounding the emerald serpent shifting as they pulled up, it still felt like he was being whipped into their spine.

Josh would ride next to Virizion and give the Sacred Sword's back a gentle pat if they allowed it. "Training with her was a big help in letting me endure Swift's speed. I've got a long ways to go, though. Even with all the experience I have, going all-out with him is just... physically demanding on my body, you know?" And yet, he would have to master it if he wanted to use the electric tiger to his fullest potential in the upcoming war.

"They are," Josh answered. "She made me dizzy when she leaped and twirled about. If you ever want to learn together, I've got a good mountain trail for us to practice on, on 115. I would offer up my Gym, but I gotta keep Swift hush-hush until the war. Rocket won't see him coming, since they think he died with Kyle." The mention of the former Top Champion's name brought the grin off his face, turning it more somber. "I miss him so much. You know that Swift was initially his Pokémon, right?"

Lam's remark about Josh's iron stomach didn't go unnoticed, either. It was a concern the Gym Leader had. He loved the magical speeds the Beast was capable of. "It's something I'm worried about. I've toned my body to be able to tolerate going faster than just about anyone else in Hoenn can. It's why my Gym's racing challenge has such a low challenger success rate - the League's getting on my case again for it being too hard. But Swift is... on a whole different level. I'm afraid that... I'll run into my limit before I get to his."

“I sort of fear the day when he learns,” he remarked with a bright laugh. It was easy to envision—the gray streak of the raikou tearing across the region at a full tilt. It was sort of interesting to entertain. Idly, Lam wondered just how much distance the Raikou could cover in a singular use of QUICK ATTACK. It had to be miles, surely. Josh definitely had his work cut out for him, though, if he aimed to stay aboard the big cat the whole time.[break][break]
Familiarity was clear between Virizion and Josh, and they accepted the gesture that Mauville’s gym leader extended. Their eyes closed, head bobbing in what seemed to be a warm greeting. “Oh yeah? Bet you move quickly, then,” he said, attention swiveling toward Virizion who tilted their head at him with knowing eyes. He hadn’t experienced it for himself just yet, uncertain as to whether or not making the request would be a step too far in what was still a budding connection between Sword and Knight.[break][break]
As Josh continued, his stomach turned. “I can imagine,” he agreed, grimacing. “I think I’d fall off, if I’m being completely honest.” Or his legs would strain, from being strapped in while the rest of his torso struggled to hang tight. But maybe he should try to get accustomed to it—so when Josh offered, he was quick to nod. “Yeah, that’d be helpful. So it was like…riding a stantler, I suppose?” All graceful leaps and bounds. It made sense—Virizion was a force to be reckoned with, but they always looked so elegant in their actions. Fluid and natural rather than brutal force. At least to Lam, anyway.[break][break]
As talk turned to the MIA champion, Lam’s expression grew somber. He nodded, “It’s weird, I didn’t know him as well, but it’s clear how much his absence affects things. And yeah, I’d heard as much.” It was strange, the way he’d just vanished. He’d read the reports, but he could still remember the last time he’d seen him. Launching after Solgaleo and Matias on Mt. Chimney. Assuring all of them that he’d had a handle on things before he disappeared from sight.[break][break]
Lam shook his head, dispelling the memory. Green eyes drifted back to Josh, focusing there. “Well, I’m sure you can reach it. Just…don’t push it too fast, you know?” His brows furrowed together, “It might seem crucial, but if you know yourself, you’ll know when you’re overdoing it.”
