The red stone cracks in your grip, shatters.

When you look, what you are holding instead is a dead Ariados. Somehow, you know it is Hideo's. Somehow, in all your righteous anger, this symbol takes you back to that moment of comforting him, and it is a sobering thought.

The man you were in that moment and the man you are now, in this one, they exist in the same body. You are all that you have ever been and all that you ever will be. Rebirth, renewal, reincarnation seem to surround you in some way, but have you become a new body, mind, and soul with all that you have experienced?

Who is here, now?

For a brief moment, you feel like you are of three minds. You see a snapshot of three outcomes.

1 - An experience: raw forgiveness. The scars you bear differ from his but are all the same, ultimately, in how they ache incessantly. You see the two of you embracing, feel his passive warmth, feel the sharp razor of resentment or apprehension or fear or - whatever its name, you find it dulled against his touch. In this snapshot, you are sure you are holding someone who has been cut so many times they know how to bear it.

2 - A philosophy: inevitable conclusion. The earth will yawn open in his anger and swallow you whole, but you are a bitter pill. You are blight and plague and sick personified. The earth may swallow you, but you will ruin it, meanwhile. For all your shortcomings, no one can say you don't leave your mark wherever you go. The earth closes around you, but nothing can grow for miles around it, ever. You have ruined it.

3 - An observation: the cycle. The story repeats. It doesn't matter if you want to love them or flee from them or own them. You kill them in some way, some form. They always haunt you in some way, some form. What you want doesn't matter. What you do will always kill them. What remains will be their ghost. You are a harbinger. You are better than others because you know the story, while others cannot comprehend theirs.

For a brief moment, you feel the most removed from the dream scenario than you've been this whole time, though with the powerful drag of Matias' emotions and how it triggers yours, it is a difficult bondage to break. For a brief moment, you aware of the bondage.

You were going to be kind to him, she vaguely recalls as her consciousness expands. That was right. You thought he deserved happiness before you ruined him.[break][break]

It's like she is gazing down at herself, observing the way that MATIAS SILPH grabs a woman that looks like her. The woman is both her and isn't. She is, in this moment, both herself and not.[break][break]

She watches him force this woman to confront her sins, the Red Shard in his hand squirming until it becomes an unrecognizable mass of legs and eyes. He rips away her hand, and she stares blankly up at him, having forgotten how to scream.[break][break]

That happens to her in dreams, sometimes. It's like nothing in her body remembers how to fight.[break][break]

Sometimes, even when waking, she forgets what it is to be someone worth saving.[break][break]

Perhaps she doesn't need to be saved, though. She is a pestilence that crawls out from the aftermath of ruin and decay, surviving only through spite in the face of cruelty.[break][break]

She is defiance personified, even as he tears away the last of her defenses, even as she puts up no physical resistance to his demand.[break][break]

Something in the spirit quietly steels itself, knowing this is not the end. She's lived through too many chapters like this one to imagine otherwise.

The dreamscape has tried to contain two powerful opposing forces that cannot be balanced and has failed.

Turmoil. The dreamscape around you shifts, jerks, then shatters. You find yourselves standing in some expansive white space with no borders; only chunks of the reality you had just been in float around you, sometimes shifting in color like aberrations on a TV screen. These pieces move in erratic ways and are unreachable and untouchable regardless of what action you take to chase after them.

Blight. The reality of your reality is that you are dreaming and something is wrong. Awareness burns in your throat like absinthe. Deep in your subconscious, your mind is tangling with an understanding that there is an unavoidable choice coming. Time is running out. You know you will lose something regardless of what you choose. What happens now either has severe consequences or none. What are your final words?

There's so little time left, and yet the seconds that pass between them are excruciating.[break][break]

If she doesn't speak to him now, it's possible that she never will.[break][break]

She's destined to rip out his heart, and because of him, BARNABY FINCH would rip out her own.[break][break]

Neither of them will be satisfied by the dream's inevitable conclusion. Neither of them emerges whole and unscathed.[break][break]

She cants her head at him, questioning what the red in his eyes means this time. She doesn't know if she's talking to the man or the god.[break][break]

Someone in-between, perhaps. She is someone in-between with him, too.[break][break]

"You got your wish. Though whether the fault is yours or mine, it's hard to say. Mostly mine. Partially yours. Either way, the result is the same."[break][break]

She's alone for the second time in her life, but she mourns this loss in a way she never mourned the first.[break][break]

It's inevitable, she reasons with herself. All things end. Even dreams.
