Zev made his way to the laboratories of the Team Rocket submarine, familiar with the route even if he remained an outsider to the pristine white rooms. He had only a half-hour to spare in his schedule, reserved for an appointment with Head Scientist Lulu Flint. [break][break]

"Flint," he said in greeting upon entering her lab. Skipping the pleasantries as usual, he launched into his reason for the meeting. "How is the state of the laboratories on Sootopolis proper? Have you and Sato calculated the loss to our science department?" [break][break]

Only a few days had passed since the crater island had flooded, then emptied, thanks to Kyogre's volatile behavior and the battle to contain it.

perhaps dramatic. however, not only had team rocket taken massive damage in every laboratory on the island, but most of lulu’s own private lab had been destroyed as well. thankfully, she’d migrated her files to the submarine upon her promotion.[break][break]

she looked over, so bitter that she’d forgotten to properly address the god general as he entered. her resentment for the culprit was powerful, knowing where it still rested, knowing who tended to it and the deal made. she’d hated kyogre before, and she positively loathed it now.[break][break]

”but we will rebuild. our greatest value is in our minds.”[break][break]

there was a beep as a scanner completed its pass over a large tera shard, and a machine’s whir sighed out into rest. deeper in the lab seemed to be another less familiar project: a massive battery perched on a workbench.[break][break][break]

A long career carrying out high-risk objectives had turned Zev into a pragmatic man. As infuriating as it was to lose so many resources, he'd expected it as soon as he saw how much seawater had flooded Sootopolis. [break][break]

"What did we manage to save?" he asked, his mind searching for possible exceptions. "Do we have laboratories and research stations in other cities across the region?" [break][break]

He knew of a couple small ones, hidden away in dark basements. Lilycove, Mauville, Rustboro. None of them were as extensive as what Team Rocket had built in Sootopolis, however. [break][break]

"What about the rocket ship?"

a brow then quirked at the mention of the rocket. though their space program existed for all the syndicate’s celestial exploration, it had been at rest for some time, awaiting yet another moon mission to try and wrangle in cresselia.[break][break]

however, she suspected zev harcourt had little interest in dreams. that their project was hardly on his radar beyond what use spectra had made of it.[break][break]

“there are significant repairs be done.” which pushed back the mission again, frustratingly. “why are you interested in that?”[break][break][break]

"Before we were forced to leave Mossdeep, we did manage to extract blueprint data and research from the Space Center. A significant amount of it," Zev said. "Nenet has the originals, but I can forward copies to our space research team if she hasn't done that already." [break][break]

Team Rocket's premature departure from that city was still a point of frustration for him, but neither had it been a total loss. The organization's success at the Space Center had reaped great reward, all thanks to his wife's ingenuity and deceit. [break][break]

The fact that the rocket ship needed repairs meant it had been stored in Sootopolis this whole time. While not ideal, Zev saw the opportunity as it presented itself. [break][break]

"Instead of repairing it back to its original design, I want to upgrade it. I want to make a vessel that can travel through Ultra Space." [break][break]

The idea had been brewing in his mind ever since the revelation about Necrozma and its children. War, however, had pushed that personal project aside for the past few months.

the request that followed was very intriguing. what could the avatar of necrozma possibly want with a vessel for ultra space? an easy guess, really.[break][break]

while she imagined the risks, if Chu-e Choi was any example, zev would erode away to a sickly nothingness before he could cause too much damage.[break][break]

”i can’t tell you how glad i am that team rocket sees the value in worlds beyond. we’ve come a long way.” she smiled at him, perhaps for the first time. ”and there is so much farther to go.”[break][break]

her eyes lingered on him, how healthy he looked. it was a gamble. she’d play.[break][break]

”i’ve been preparing for something like this, actually. over there,” she nodded in the direction of the workbench, ”is a battery from a megalopolan ship. we’re on our way. we will prioritize it.”[break][break]

Zev glanced at the workbench Lulu indicated. In some ways, the Megalopolan battery resting upon its surface seemed familiar; in other ways, it was totally foreign. [break][break]

"I know there's a Megalopolan ship in the Ultra Deep Sea that we can use for parts," he said, recalling the many reports he'd read about that world. The battery had likely come from it. "We should look for others that might exist beyond the rifts." [break][break]

He directed his attention back to the scientist. [break][break]

"You have my full support in this. Money and manpower are not an issue; just ask for what you need."

she guessed he would be out the door quickly after giving his assignment, for he’d never been much of a lingerer in the labs. though she did have one question, she waited, in case there was more.[break][break]

Lulu's mention of a second crash site in Ultra Crater prompted an approving nod from Zev, though he wondered if two ships would yield enough material for their own. He made a mental note to keep an eye out for others in the new rifts he and fern delaney were still exploring. [break][break]

Zev made to leave, but saw in her expression that she had something else to say. He corrected his half-turn away from her and tilted his head. [break][break]

"Do you need anything from me?" he asked.

Zev suppressed the frown at Lulu's sudden interest in his well-being. He chalked it up to her natural curiosity as a scientist. "I'm fine. I've never felt better." [break][break]

That much was true. The many months since his contact with Necrozma had worn away the memories of what life had been like before his Avatarship. Imprisonment on that Megalopolan spaceship had been a frustrating reminder of that time, but at least it had been brief. [break][break]

Lulu's comment on how taxing his powers must be stood out to Zev as peculiar. Why did she care? "Beast Neon has data on my energy readings if that's what you're wondering about," he offered.

“not really. i don’t study avatars – though i did used to be one myself.” she’d mostly stayed away from the research, not wanting to be caught up in it as a test subject. ”in my experience, it comes with pros in cons. actually, i witnessed firsthand the deterioration of the last necrozma avatar. however, i don’t believe he was as healthy as you to begin with.”[break][break]

though it was an assumption, it was truly difficult to imagine zev in any kind of pitiful way. he was the face of their organization’s brute power. she paused and then smiled, hollow and conclusive. ”in any case, it’s good to hear you’re well – and congratulations on your promotion, by the way.”[break][break]

Of course. All Team Rocket's scientists had only limited data regarding Necrozma's Avatars, so it was natural to compare Zev's condition with the previous one's. Lulu made the same observation as others, too: Chu-e Choi had been sickly. Dying. It made sense that Zev thrived in comparison as the Devourer. [break][break]

He inclined his head toward Lulu in acknowledgement of her comments—and, in particular, her belated congratulations. "You know how to reach me if you need anything for the ship," he said. "I expect regular updates." [break][break]

Then he left, stepping through the door of her laboratory without any backward glance.
