Summer was nearly over, but the sun didn't seem to know.[BREAK][BREAK]

It beat down on ROUTE 104 at 105 degrees like an angry god smiting the people of HOENN. Nevertheless, the war with TEAM ROCKET continued. Forces on both sides were still expected to keep up with their patrols and gain ground or defend it. Even Remiel Calcifet wasn't exempt from this.[BREAK][BREAK]

Nor would he exempt himself, despite his pale complexion and general intolerance for this kind of heat. He was dressed lightly today: a pair of hiker's pants, a short-sleeved shirt, and a cap. The small bag slung around his body bounced against his hip as he hurried to round the bend, where the route gave way to a large grassy clearing filled with flowering yarrow.[BREAK][BREAK]

Then, slowing to a stop, he pulls out a Luxury Ball that catches the sunlight above with beautiful golden sparkles. Standing poised and at the ready, he stares into the tall grass with a suspicious glare as sweat beads across his forehead.[BREAK][BREAK]

"I know you're here... show yourself."

He commands the unseen ROCKET, smoothly tossing the ball with an upward flick of his wrist.[BREAK][BREAK]

From the ensuing flash, a HYPNO emerges. It stands in front of its trainer, swaying side-to-side slowly while holding its swinging pendulum at the ready. Together, they begrudgingly wait for the invader to show themself as the sun continues to beat down.[break][break]

A startled voice appeared from the rustling brush, thick in a country-style Unovan accent. From the grass appeared Montgomery, clad in jeans, a black button up, and cowboy hat to boot. He looked more like a civilian than police officer.

Still, he approached Remiel Calcifet with his hands in the air, silently communicating that he meant no harm. "We're on the same trail. I'm not yer enemy," he promised, reaching into his pocket and revealing his identification.

"Deputy Montgomery James, Dewford PD"

Blowing a sigh from his lips, Montgomery tilted his hat back from his eyes, giving Remiel a glance over. "Yer that Calcifet fella, ain't ya? Kinda distinguishable from the accent. C'mon. I was scoutin' the area 'fore ya showed. They shouldn't be far."

From above, an ILLUMINA SKARMORY sailed gracefully in the air, coming to land beside the deputy. Pipsqueak squawked at her trainer, indicating she'd located the target of his operation. She then regarded the HYPNO with a cool expression, metallic feathers flared as she waited for it to retaliate in some way.

HELMUT the Hypno, however, proves to be as distrustful of Montgomery James as his trainer is. War tended to do that to its soldiers, lieutenants, and, yes, even those considered seasoned veterans. It frayed the edges of the mind so that instinct could help with survival.[break][break]

Unfortunately, that also gave way to paranoia.

[BREAK]

Remiel Calcifet had been hunted by TEAM ROCKET for years and was now waging a scorched earth campaign against them. He had all the reason to be extra suspicious and careful. His hatred for them was a fire they wished to put out permanently.[BREAK][BREAK]

"Dewford?" The EX-ADMIN repeats, glaringly scrutinizing the ID. "I've never seen you before. That could just as easily be a fake." He continues, pausing to acknowledge the ILLUMINA SKARMORY in the sky above.[BREAK][BREAK]

"And you could just as easily be leading me into a trap."

[BREAK]

His right hand crackles with electricity while his Hypno gently continues swaying its pendulum at the alleged sheriff. The attempted FUTURE SIGHT, however, will take a few moments. Until it does, Remiel continues.[BREAK][BREAK]

"You're not from HOENN, are you? Your accent. It gives you away."

He was fuckin' annoying.

"If ya have a problem with it," he said, starting to reach for his side. Though, he stopped, instead breathing through his nostrils and speaking calmly. "Ya can take it up with yer Elite Four. My sheriff, Navy."

It was him who'd put him his position. And if the stupid Galarian prince had any problem with it, well... it wasn't his damn problem.

"Look, ya got me, or ya got no one. Okay? Knock yerself down a peg, 'n stop thinkin' too damn hard about this." Montgomery glared at him from beneath the rim of his hat, Pipsqueak's nails digging into the dirt.

"And? Does that matter to ya?"

Knock himself down a peg? Stop 'thinking so hard' about this? The insult in Remiel's expression is apparent as he hears the other man speak. As far as he was concerned, those were the words of a ROCKET member who thought you could slip past unnoticed.[BREAK][BREAK]

"I'm not in the habit of dumbing myself down for strangers," The royal coldly snaps back as electricity slowly begins to spark off his body like miniature fireworks. "Recall your Skarmory and surrender. Now. Or I'll be forced to subdue you myself."[BREAK][BREAK]

Suddenly, the Hypno's eyes begin to glow as it perceives a possible future where the Skarmory took to the skies again before suffering a cramp, crashing into the branches of a nearby tree as the two humans engaged.[BREAK][BREAK]

Maybe he'd take this galarian down a peg or two.

Pipsqueak squalled at the hypno, charging in with an iron head that was meant for its trainer.

Sensing the danger ahead, the SKARMORY attacks first, subverting the outcome of the FUTURE SIGHT to strike the Hypno's defending arm. The bipedal tapir groans in pain as said arm falls limp to its side, stumbling backward as it shakes its nose aggressively at the other. Then, with a flick of its wrist, it tries to DISABLE the Skarmory.[BREAK][BREAK]

"If you were really who you say you are, surrendering yourself to my scrutiny wouldn't have been so difficult!" Remiel exclaims, crossing the gap between himself and Montgomery James swiftly as his right-hand crackles with electricity. "Only a ROCKET would attack in response!"[BREAK][BREAK]

Suddenly, his crackling hand dives forward, attempting to seize the deputy's shoulder tightly and deliver a debilitating electric shock.[BREAK][BREAK]

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery's shoulder was grasped in a firm hold, and then the shock of electricity ignited his nerves. If he could scream, he would. Instead, his muscles seized under Remiel's hold, becoming painfully stiff as he electrocuted him.

His skarmory, having noticed the attack, found that the hypno was of no concern. Her trainer was being attacked, and it was her duty bestowed by zacian to protect him.

Though the iron head was disabled, she could return to Montgomery, metal claws reaching out to attack Remiel for even daring to touch her master. She screeched with rage, fighting for blood shed.

Remiel grips the man's shoulder tightly, compelling him to drop to his knees as his ELECTRICITY crackles throughout his body. When he spots the Skarmory dashing toward him from the corner of his eye, however, the EXACTING is forced to break off. A hand swiftly reaches for another Luxury Ball notched to his belt.[BREAK][BREAK]

But, by the time he summons MALENIA the IRON VALIANT, his Hypno has already HEADBUTTED the Skarmory off-course. Unfortunately, it finds itself clawed mercilessly shortly thereafter, unable to POUND away at the bird's armor with any great effect.[BREAK][BREAK]

In the meantime, Remiel turns his attention back to the supposed deputy kneeling in the grass before him. Only this time an Iron Valiant with glaring red eyes looms over his shoulder. Robotic and merciless, it reels an arm back and readies its blade.[BREAK][BREAK]

"Call your bird off. Now."

[attr="class","monty"]He was able to breathe again as the avatar's grip released on his shoulder, though his muscles reflexively twitched a few more times from remaining static. A low groan left his lips, as he watched Pipsqueak charge at him.

Then, she was struck by the hypno, though her metal claws dug deep into yellow flesh. Should she free herself from its grasp, she gained a bit of altitude before pressing her body down to, in a way, smush it into submission.

A sword slashed in front of his vision, Montgomery's attention drawn back to Remiel.

"Yer a real piecea shit."

If Remiel was stubborn, Montgomery was equally so, like a tauros determined to attack. From a dream ball, something reminiscent of ameena abadi, he tossed a ball forward with a slight flick of his wrist. And, when clefable emerged...

She sang.
