Being hypnotized was an unpleasant experience. A psychic claw dug into the admin's mind, digging and probing. It tore at and gnawed upon the grey matter that made up Howard's brain, and he let out a dull moan and shriek.

Stop looking...

A dull flow of memories surged forth. A lecture hall. An ancient tomb. An ancient table with a jagged knife and a splatter of blood. A catatonic man huddled in the corner.

Stop looking...

An eye fell from the socket and splattered against the floor. The catatonic man looked up, his socket burned shut with energy from a Mega Stone.

'Mary, I want you to live your life and forget about me. Be happy.'

"You can't... hypnotize me! I'm blessed!" Howard let out a dull groan as he gritted his teeth. He didn't submit to the Sigilyph's control, but that didn't mean he could move against it. All he could do was observe. "Wake the hell up, Montgomery!"

Howard reached for a vacant Pokeball at his belt.

"Wake... up... Montgomery!"

Who was calling him?

Rubbing his forehead, his eyes adjusted in the dark, spotting the creature descending upon Howard. He grabbed his pistol, aiming...

PEW.

It struck the sigilyph, causing it to shriek in surprise. The shot was all his skarmory needed to confirm a target to attack, drill pecking it away from the trainers.

Ultimately, guns are ineffective against Pokémon. Yet a loud noise in an enclosed space was definitely enough to startle the sentinel, which had likely heard nothing for centuries. Howard's ears, meanwhile, were still ringing as the shot echoed through the ruins.

At least Montgomery was back, Howard supposed. Better than nothing. Even if the gangster's kneejerk reaction was to shoot at anything that annoyed him.

Between Shirley and Skarmory's dancing, the Sigilyph quickly fell. Wordlessly, Howard threw a Pokeball at it. It rattled once, then twice, then thrice. For a horrifying moment, there was a chance that it was going to crack open.

Ding. Sigilyph was caught.

"Alright, we gotta run." Howard picked up the Pokeball and broke into a sprint. "You just alerted everything in this ruin by shooting a gun."

Montgomery let out a loud whoop of laughter as they took off down the shadows, his hair flying behind him in white and black-tinted waves. He slapped a hand to his head, keeping the hat he wore snug to his skull as they ran through the cave.

Then, he saw the first evidence of light.

"There! C'mon!"

"But what about the treasuuuuuuuuuuuuuur-" Howard let out a shriek as two more Sigilyph flew after them, their eyes igniting into a blast of energy that blasted at their heels. As they leapt through the opening, Shirley's wings flapping. "DUCK!"

Ducking himself, Howard turned to face the assailants while hiding behind Montgomery. The gangster made for a reliable human shield. If he was going to walk the walk, then he could talk the talk.

Hoawrd would do the same, just from behind his colleague.

"Ancient Power!" Antique stones erupted from the cobbled floor of the ruin and flew forward the psychic defenders, knocking one's wing askew and causing it to flutter to the earth. "I'm catching them!"

He threw a Pokeball.

Despite Montgomery insisting on antagonizing Howard, he did listen to his command. He didn't want to lose his head running from a fucking sigilyph.

Shirley struck with ancient power. skarmory hardened his body before he attacked, using his steel wings to chop at the body of the sigilyph.

Howard's ball opened, sucking in the Pokmeon before it had time to retaliate. And then, silence filled the ruin.

Montgomery, covered in sweat, dirt, and maybe a bit of blood, burst out laughing, slapping his knee.

"Damn, son! That's one helluva catch. Nice thinkin'."

Wordlessly, he pointed behind Montgomery, where another Pokeball lay dormant, its satisfying click echoing as it cut through the silence.

Three.

"Thanks." Howard muttered as he collected his three Sigilyph and clipped them to his belt. It was a remarkable boost to his team, given that the archaeologist typically only collected Pokémon for work. The caught Sigilyph were capable of that and more. "We did good. We did good."

He frowned as Montgomery laughed. What a strange man.

"Are you still hypnotized?" Howard asked as he Shirley moved to butt her head against his torso. "What's so funny?

He looked back into the cavern. It was black, ominous, yet it still called for him. But, he thought that perhaps, they'd gone through a bit too much drama for one day.

"We'll try again tomorrow. Let's pack up, yeah?"
