Though he'd be loathe to admit it to anyone, this was not Gavin's first trip to the graves of Mt. Pyre. It would not be the last.[break][break]

Spectral flames produced by Marowak illuminate words carved into stone, little reminders of the Pokemon interred below. Some bore names, dates, sweet phrases written by grieving trainers. Gavin stands over a pair of graves whose headstones are unmarred by text.[break][break]

It's the sound of footsteps that draw his attention, firelight catching on his glasses as he looks up.

Adrian seemed detached as he walked along.

Traipsing through the shroud of twilight falling, Adrian ascended the slope of Mt. Pyre in the company of his Grimmsnarl, Omen. He wasn't in a mood for any tricks, not that he ever was. But he needed to return to the conclave after a lengthy recess of sorts spent primarily in Slateport.

After reaching the next tier of the mountain, he was able to notice the dull glow of a phantom flame a short distance away. While passing nearby he saw a trainer and their unusual Marowak...

Rather than risking them following, feeling a thought pulsating from that esoteric benefactor, he would have to entertain them and, above all, get them to leave back down the mountain. An exasperated sigh rolled off his lips as he deigned to introduce himself so abruptly and yet so casually, as if this were the mall or some other meeting place, and not the grave of untold souls. "Hey..."

"...Is there a hand on your shoulder?" Adrian froze.

He does not recognize the man. His gaze, instead, finds a familiar Pokemon: a Grimmsnarl, a reminder of home. The stranger's accent does not suggest a Galarian origin but, then, neither does Gavin's. He was ever so cautious.[break][break]

"Evening," he returns, and expects that to be all — his eyes narrow at the question, brow furrowing. "What?"[break][break]

There is no hand on his shoulder, not that he'd felt, and Gavin doesn't look away. He's too suspicious to knowingly turn his back on someone in this dark, lonely place. There was no telling of the man's intentions.[break][break]

Marowak spins its spectral bone, a WILL-O-WISP forming at its ends to ward off encroaching Pokemon.

Tch. Adrian didn't know why he'd been hoping for any different; it was a grown man he was talking to, not some kid, but he'd hoped they would've gotten jumpy and considered leaving at once.

"Just a prank. Cemetery, and all..." Shrugging with a smile, he's not wiling to leave Gavin unattended, though he sees some wild pokemon milling about too now that the fog was dispersing.

"Omen, take care of them." In the haze of the fog it's difficult to make out its alabaster figure disappearing into the murk of the mountain, tendrils of hair raking at the pokemon as they got within reach. All they could hear was the sound of a struggle before Omen reappeared by his side.

"Are you perhaps... catching pokemon too?" Effectively Adrian was out of options, so unless he wanted to take this guy down himself, he'd just have to play the part. "...Or paying respects?"

The flutter of its ghostly wings is captivating rather than eerie and the Rocket watches it for a moment before extending his arm. Oricorio flutters toward him and grips his forearm with its talons, tilting its head to peer up at him.[break][break]

They were said to draw upon the strength of nearby spirits. Did that mean...?[break][break]

He dismisses the thought before it can form. He's a man of science more than silly superstitions. He does, however, allow the friendly avian to remain.

That figures. Adrian couldn't find it in him to try and hurry them along, so instead he'd have to wait them out... which was lame. But that didn't mean nothing would come of it. Sometimes fate had a hand in these moments, nurturing a yet unforeseen outcome. And sometimes it was bogus.

At the very least there seemed to be no lack of pokemon, Adrian realized as a Hatenna began clambering up along Omen's furls of hair, seemingly unfazed by its intent to use it as a jungle gym. Well, if he's not bothered...

"You ever think about it?" Why did I say that? Adrian's lips had let slip a bit of his own musing, perhaps the overflow of one trying to come to terms with something they've realized only subconsciously. "...The 'What comes after' ?"

The sky is the object of his fixation, that cradle of stars looming over Mt. Pyre's summit... The same cradle that stoked the fires of life, just out there; brilliant, boundless, flowing on for near eternity...

Death was a wolf at his heels, its hot breath on the back of his neck. One day, he would stumble, and that predator would pounce. Until then, he was always running from it. Only the occasional brush with it, jaws scraping along his spine, reminded him of its cold reality.[break][break]

"Well. I'll leave you to your mourning."[break][break]

He is not at peace here, wholly eager to depart for a warmer place in which bad memories did not dwell.

He responds in the faintest whisper as they pass him by. It's exactly what he wanted, so why did it leave a bitter taste in his mouth having succeeded?

Rather than reflect on it, Adrian distracts himself with an Abra that has fixated on him. Or perhaps that's his imagination. Suffice it to say it doesn't put up much of a struggle. Perhaps it had been asleep when he'd set eyes on it. After stowing it away in a backpack, Adrian continues the climb.
