Venus is a rising star in the knock off course. Her golden feathers is a notable feature that the judges could only remember as the ideal mascot of the summer games—or at least that is what Selena thought she heard from the bystanders.

The altaria is a proud creature and her abilities do not stray from her level of confidence. But Selena does not want to feed her ego. She makes the pokémon pur on her COTTON GUARD and prepare for the knock off race, the only thing inside Venus’s head is to keep beating her own best record.

Of the four courses, this one is Gavin's least favourite. It's punishing, painful, and it seems to go on forever.[break][break]

Still, he's determined to climb those leaderboards if it kills him, so it's not just his Metagross PSYCHING UP for this task. Gavin's sporting a dark bruise on one arm from his worst fall in a previous course but that doesn't stop him from heading off with an air of confidence.

kyle stretches as he readies for another course, his smeargle following after his trainer's lead. there's only one start for these kinds of runs with his smeargle, and the smeargle already knows what to do.

as rehearsed with multiples of the same runs before, it psychs up after the altaria, sharing its boost in defense. it's trying to roar afterwards, but the sound it makes doesn't quite fit its intentions.

It’s just the same as the other course—only this time, it is Selena’s most favorite one as well.

The other three have their own way as well, but Venus puffs even more as she increases her COTTON GUARD at the start of the race. This time, even when foam bats come to push them off into the water, its power won’t be enough to do so.

It's a good thing these courses start off easy and get harder as they go, for Gavin very nearly loses his footing at the beginning. Metagross is still in the process of PSYCHING UP and isn't strong enough to hold back a slowly swinging mechanical arm.[break][break]

It bumps into Gavin and nearly knocks him over, but he manages to — while not graceful in the slightest — clamber over it and reach the other side, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Metagross is keeping up.[break][break]

another layer of fluff covers the smeargle as it psychs up after seeing the altaria do the same. anymore and kyle cannot see the smeargle being able to move properly.

it wobbles ahead, but the way it blocks against attacks that would have otherwise thrown the two of them off of the course makes kyle think that it wasn't so bad being lazy and foregoing the effort to withdraw his furfrou instead.

thanks to the solid puff of cotton on venus’s body, both of them are able to traverse the platform amidst the constant threat of foam bats and other obstacles. this time, seadras come knocking both of them down with draco meteors. “venus! counter them all!”[break][break]

the altaria shines as it transforms with much more cotton than before and more vibrant energy surrounding its golden feathers. the dragon bursts with golden energy that targets incoming draco meteors with her own draco meteor as selena chases the diminishing time through the knock off course.[break][break]

kyle sees an attack going in and his first instinct is to grab his cotton guarded furfrou and use it as a shield. it softens the blow enough to keep him from being thrown off at least.

"that's... convenient," kyle realizes, after which he never drops his furfrou again.

Though physically fit and accustomed to withstanding pain, the repeated pressure he's been putting on himself throughout the day is starting to take its toll on Gavin. He can feel it in the clumsiness of his movements, the way he stumbles over a jump that he'd have cleared without issues before.[break][break]

His stubborn refusal to give up is costing him. Perhaps this was going to be his last course of the day.[break][break]

it turns out kyle was getting so tired of multiple runs that he mixes up his pokemon. it was actually his smeargle instead of his furfrou. both were normal-types though, so the mistake was nothing big.

he still uses his smeargle as a personal shield as he goes through the gauntlet however.
