"Ready for anything. Got it." that was pretty much how he'd lived his life anyway. Dying had taught him to expect the unexpected. Even if by some miracle it hadn't - life with his father certainly had. You never knew what you were going to get traveling with that bastard.[break][break]

Xander nodded thoughtfully as Sénon offered up more advice. The ranger's words of encouragement were eerily similar to sentiments echoed by both his old man and former therapist. He shifted uncomfortably, hands sliding back into the pockets of his jacket.[break][break]

Leave it a ranger to touch on a subject he'd be toiling with internally for ages.[break][break]

"Trust me, I plan to keep moving forward." that felt like all he did. But not in the way Sénon meant. No, the ranger was talking about growth - about change. Xander's feet might have been moving but the rest of him wasn't. "It's the whole reason I came to Hoenn." he said with a hefty sigh.[break][break]

"I don't know." Xander answered with a shrug.[break][break]

"My sister's a ranger. She's been infatuated with you lot since we were kids. Me though? I'm not sure I'm cut out for either role. It's got nothing to do with confidence. I can do most of what I set my mind too. It's just..." he paused, conflicted on whether or not to share. The tiny voice in the back of his mind told him not too. That it wouldn't be worth it in the end.[break][break]

"Nevermind, it's not important." the redhead frowned, eager to change the subject. "Its been pretty quiet so far. Think they know we're here and are waiting for us to leave?"

Xander chuckled dryly, "Sorry, 'fraid being glum's kind of my thing." It was hard not to be with his track record. Pushing off the fence, Xander followed Sénon towards the barn. "Not saying I'm useless or anything. I'll step up if you need me to. It's just better if we keep the ball in your court is all." not that he didn't appreciate the vote of confidence.[break][break]

He moved closer to the gathered Ponyta, a hand outstretched to pet one of their heads. The Pokemon responded in kind, nuzzling into it affectionately. Xander smiled faintly and continued to pet the creature as they talked.[break][break]

"Nah, nothing like that on me, sorry. Although Komali certainty likes to think he can." he sighed.[break][break]

"Do I need one like that? The league hadn't said anything to me about it when I agreed to help." he asked.[break][break]

"My Pokemon aren't exactly strong." Xander turned to face Sénon with a frown. "If I'm being honest, I'm kinda new to this whole training Pokemon thing. Spent most of my time traveling and drawing before this." he hoped that wouldn't be too much of a problem for them going forward.[break][break]

"I do have a Vibrava I caught recently with me. Not sure how well she'll listen, but she's capable."

Xander wasn't sure what had compelled him to help out the league. He'd never gone out of his way to aide them any other time. He was usually content to keep to himself and let the rangers handle these things. The last thing they needed was someone with his penchant for trouble getting in their way.[break][break]

Yet despite thinking that, Xander still found himself at Horned Ranch. Ready to help the league deal with the hunters pestering the place. At least he wouldn't be doing it alone. The league had enough foresight to send an actual ranger to assist in dealing with the issue. [break][break]

Xander nodded and shook the man's hand firmly, "That's me." he said somewhat dryly. "You must be the ranger I'm supposed to be waiting for. Sénon, right?" releasing Sénon's hand, Xander gave him a quick once over.[break][break]

He looked capable of handling this situation all on his own. Xander slid his hands into his jacket pockets and leaned against the fencing behind him.[break][break]

"I'll try my best not to get in your way once things pop off." he looked away, head turning to the side and glancing at the Wooloo gathered behind the fence.[break][break]

"Figure you don't want some inexperienced newbie mucking things up for you."

Xander rubbed at the back of his neck, "Don't sweat it. You weren't the one who interrupted me anyway." he shot Zephos and Gloomtail a stern look. The pair looked down at the ground sullenly, Gloomtail letting out a small whine. It was almost enough to make him feel bad. Almost. He sighed, taking the business card and stuffing it into his pocket. [break][break]

Rather than leave, however, Xander found his interest peaked by something Zac had said. "Space invasion?" he asked with a puzzled expression. "You mean like aliens?" Xander wasn't sure how to process that information. It seemed a bit outlandish. Then again, it wasn't exactly the craziest thing he'd heard before.[break][break]

Xander glanced back at his bag. He really did want to get back to sketching. But the curiosity Xander inherited from his father was telling him it could wait. Who knew, he might find something better to sketch further inside.[break][break]

"Fuck." he whispered, "Gloomtail, go fetch my bag." said Xander, almost reluctantly. Xander's attention returned to Zac as the dragon floated off to do as ordered. "I'm probably going to regret this later. Mind taking me to where this 'invasion' happened?" best to go with someone who knew the way if he was going to go.

Dreepy floated over to Xander nervously. The trainer wore a frown, slight frustration showing in his eyes as he stared at the dragon. "Gah, you're in so much trouble Gloomtail." the young man sighed. "Thanks for keeping him safe." Xander shook the man's hand firmly.[break][break]

"Sorry if he caused you any trouble." although it didn't seem like Dreepy had. Xander's first impression of Zac was that he seemed to be rather jovial. Certainly far more energetic than Xander himself was at least. He tossed the Pokeball he'd picked up from the river over to him.[break][break]

"I believe that's yours."[break][break]

Xander glanced at Dreepy, "I guess so." he replied, "Never thought much about it honestly. Everyone has their strengths after all." He'd thought Gloomtail's had been his obedience, but now Xander wasn't so certain.[break][break]

The redhead slipped a hand into the pocket of his jacket. "Names Xander by the way." best to introduce himself before he forgot. He nodded toward Froakie, "The frog's name is Zephos and the little guy you saved is Gloomtail" Froakie greeted Zac with a wave. Trying its best to look as cool and nonchalant as possible despite its debacle with the Vibrava.[break][break]

Xander glanced over his shoulder at the bridge. His backpack was still there, thankfully, and he was eager to get back to it. Not that he wasn't grateful for Zac's rescue of Dreepy. Xander simply wanted to return to his sketching. It was the whole reason he'd come to Meteor Falls.[break][break]

Knowing he couldn't handle both problems at once, Xander chose to focus on the one in front of him. His eyes flickered left and right, attempting to trace Vibrava's movements. She was fast, but he could barely make her out as she zig-zagged in the sky. [break][break]

"If I can just get the timing down..."[break][break]

He waited. Two seconds, three seconds, four seconds...[break][break]

"Zephos! Water Pulse, now!" Froakie sprang into action, tossing a sphere of swirling water at Vibrava. The attack collided with its target, sending it falling down from the sky.[break][break]

Xander darted to his backpack for a Pokeball. He grabbed the first empty one he could find and flung it at the Pokemon before she could recover. The ball opened wide as it connected with Vibrava, transforming her into red light and dragging her inside itself. It shook once, twice, three times and then clicked.[break][break]

Vibrava had been caught and dealt with. Xander flung his backpack over his shoulder and went to retrieve the Pokeball. It had landed on the water's shore below. She'd be a good addition to the team. Maybe she could even show Gloomtail a thing or two.[break][break]

"Speaking of," Xander could start looking for Dreepy now. Ideally, he wouldn't have gone further than the first chamber. "That's still a lot of places to check." even if he used all of his Pokemon. It still likely take an hour or more before he found Dreepy. [break][break]

A glint of something red falling form the waterfall caught Xander's attention. It was small, barely noticeable if not for its shine. It hit the water with a splash and sunk down into its depths only to bounce back to the surface. Seconds after the item resurfaced, Xander heard a masculine voice calling out to him.[break][break]

He looked up, towards the sound of the voice and saw Zac. "Yeah, I can grab it!" reaching his arm out, Xander scoped up the Pokeball as it past him. "Have you seen a Dreepy a up there!?" he shouted, holding the ball up high.

Xander had admittedly stopped paying much attention to what his Pokemon were doing. Once he set pencil to paper, he often lost himself in his artwork. He'd get so focused that he'd block out most of what was going on around him. It wasn't usually a problem, mostly just resulting in one-sided conversations. But he'd also never had Pokemon of his own to worry about before now.[break][break]

Dreepy was the first to run into trouble. The dragonling had been stubbornly trying to get Zephos to play with him, but the frog refused to. Froakie was more interested in relaxing in the water underneath the bridge than playing any games. Disappointed with his fellow mons disinterest, Gloomtail wandered off in search of something to entertain himself with.[break][break]

Forgoing that he'd been ordered to stay close, Dreepy ventured further than he should have. The glint of something shiny swaying in the cliffs above pulled at his attention. Gloomtail didn't even bother to look back before floating upward to investigate. Dreepy thought he'd find a gem or shiny rock waiting for him. What he found instead was trouble.[break][break]

Immediately after arriving, Hypno stepped out from behind the waterfall's shadow. It wore a devious grin, its golden pendulum continuing to sway as it moved closer. Gloomtail shrieked and backed away from the psychic-type slowly. As he did, Hypno reached for him with one of its meaty hands. Realizing the danger he was in, Gloomtail bolted as quickly as he could in the opposite direction. Hypno gave chase and was hot on Gloomtail's tail when the dragonling bumped into Zac.[break][break]

Dreepy shrieked and waved his arms in the air frantically at the stranger. Dashing behind the man, the reason for Dreepy's panic would quickly become clear to him. Hypno didn't care who was in its way. For whatever reason, it wanted Dreepy, and it wouldn't stop until it got him.[break][break]

Down below, Froakie had managed to stumble into trouble of his own. Zephos had been floating peacefully in the water with his eyes closed when the water started shaking violently. Opening his eyes to investigate, revealed a Vibrava to be the source of the tremors. Hovering underneath the bridge, she was using her Earth Power to disturb Zephos's relaxation.[break][break]

Froakie narrowed his eyes at the dragonfly and fired off a Water Pulse at it from the water. Vibrava darted out of the way, causing the attack to hit the underside of the bridge. The bridge shook from the impact, almost Xander down into the water. [break][break]

"What the hell are you two doing?" Xander shouted, finally pulling himself away from his sketchbook. Frustrated and not wanting to lose all his artwork. Xander placed the book back inside his backpack. He then peered down at the water, ready to give his Pokemon a lecture. Much to his surprise, however, rather than glancing down to see the pair roughhousing. He saw Froakie firing off more Water Pulses at the now chuckling Vibrava.[break][break]

"You've gotta be fucking kidding me! I look away for ten minutes, and you start bothering the wildlife." Xander groaned and placed a hand over his face. Zephos and Gloomtail were supposed to the well-behaved ones. It's why he'd chosen to let them out. If Xander had wanted trouble, he'd have gone with Repulsa and Komali.[break][break]

"Wait," he pulled his hand from his face, "Where is Gloomtail?" he looked around for the dragon but failed to spot him.[break][break]

"Great, now I've got two problems to deal with."

He'd be lying if he said her reaction hadn't caught him off guard. She'd practically jumped right out of her skin the moment he'd spoken up. It was hard not to laugh when it happened. He'd never felt any embarrassment when it came to his artwork. Even when he was still learning, Xander wasn't afraid to share his art. Xander nodded as she stammered out a reply. Yeah, it was cute and adorable, but it only made him feel worse for putting her on the spot. "Scenery, huh? That's pretty cool." Xander tried his best to sound as enthusiastic as possible. Not that he wasn't or anything because he definitely was. "Believe it or not, landscapes are actually my expertise." he added with a small smile.[break][break]

"Hey, don't worry about it." Xander waved a hand in the air, "I should probably be apologizing to you honestly. Not only was I late, but my opener was shit too." he let out a dry and awkward laugh. In the hopes of making her more comfortable, Xander took a seat beside her on the bench. He leaned back and looked up at the sky.[break][break]

"Really though, I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. Art is just one of the few things I'm passionate about." it felt like it was the only thing he cared about sometimes. "So I got a bit excited when I saw you sketching." and like always, he'd opened his mouth without thinking. Strange how often that habit landed him in troublesome and awkward situations. Xander trekked through the snow-covered route wearing an irritated frown. His frustration with Hoenn's fascination with the frosty white powder was growing. They were pretty much putting it anywhere and everywhere that they could. The red-head groaned and pulled the scarf around his neck up above his nose.[break][break]

Were they also doing something to affect the temperature? He was positive it wasn't supposed to get cold enough for him to see his breath. Mild weather during the winter is what his father told him. "What a load of Tauros shit that was." he was so going to give his old man hell the next time he saw him.[break][break]

Thankfully he'd been prepared for something like this to happen. In addition to the scarf, he was also wearing a light winter jacket. If that wasn't enough, Xander had his Larvesta resting snuggly on his left shoulder. The heat given off by Solaris's body helped immensely to combat the cold.[break][break]

The pair had been walking for a few hours, having departed from Rustboro in the early evening. It was now starting to get closer to nightfall. The setting sun cast the blanket of snow spread out before Xander in a faint orange glow. He'd have thought it a beautiful sight if he didn't hate the snow so much.[break][break]

"What do you say we take a break, Sol?" Solaris replied with a series of clicks and grunts that Xander took as a yes. Stopping for a moment, Xander looked around for an out of the way spot to set up camp. To his surprise, however, there was a small settlement of wooden buildings not too far from where he was standing. "Lucky us. Maybe they'll have a Pokemon Center or an inn we can hold up in for a bit." Xander doubted he'd get that lucky, though.[break][break]

As he drew closer to the village, he couldn't help but notice that the temperature seemed to be getting colder. Outside of finding it strange, however, Xander thought nothing of it. Upon reaching the town entrance, his lips curled into a deep frown.[break][break]

The settlement wasn't that large, being made of only nine buildings. Eight of which were small single-story wooden homes. They were aligned side-by-side, four on the left side of town and four on the right. Separating the two sides from one another was a stone pathway covered in snow. It stretched forward for several feet and at the end of it was the final building.[break][break]

The building not only had an extra storey, but it seemed to be much older than the others. It was hard to tell from a distance, but the wood used to make it looked aged and had a greyish-black color to it.[break][break]

"No Pokemon Center." Xander sighed and stepped further into town. He was already here. There was no reason for him not to take a look around. Maybe the building in the back was an inn? The chances were pretty slim, but it was at least worth checking.

Why had he thought this would be a good idea? It wasn't like he enjoyed these types of events ordinarily. Let alone when they were winter-themed. Xander shifted uncomfortably, side-eying the fake snow with a furrowed brow. He'd come to Hoenn to escape the cold, not have it thrown in his face like this.[break][break]

"Whatever," he sighed. Today was about socializing anyway; the backdrop didn't matter. Not that he planned to take this speed dating thing all that seriously. Evident by his attire, a black and red bomber jacket overtop a white button-down shirt with black cargo pants and converse high tops. There wasn't much of a point to dressing up. His chances of finding a meaningful relationship during this event were laughably slim.[break][break]

Speaking of, Xander needed to find his 'date' - there wasn't much time to mingle. He was looking for a blonde named Felicity. They hadn't given out name tags, or at least he hadn't received one. So finding her might have been difficult if he hadn't been shown a picture of her when they announced the pairings.[break][break]

Navigating through the town, Xander kept his eyes open for someone who resembled the woman he'd been shown. It took a few minutes (and one awkward conversation), but he managed to spot who he thought was her. An attractive blonde in a puffy white sweater, she sat on a bench with a sketchbook on her lap. Xander observed her from a distance as she sketched the scenery. She looked so focused, he almost didn't want to disturb her.[break][break]

"A fellow artist? Man, what are the chances of that?" asked Xander sarcastically as he walked down the brightly lit pathway. He flashed his best smile and brushed some hair away from his face. "You're Felicity, right? I'm Xander, the poor bastard you're stuck with for the next ten or so minutes." Xander chuckled dryly and nodded to the sketchbook on her lap.[break][break]

"Sketching anything interesting or doing some mindless doodling?" maybe this wouldn't be so bad. He could spend the next ten minutes talking about art.

When he saw Cait sitting underneath the shade of a nearby tree, Xander immediately felt the urge to draw her. She looked so content and enraptured with her book, all while being surrounded by an array of grass-type Pokemon. The scene was too picturesque for him not to sketch.[break][break]

"Not everyday you see a Sceptile playing the banjo either." [break][break]

Of course, he didn't want to just pop a squat across from her and start drawing. Creepy shit like that didn't go over very well with people. It would be better if he got permission before sketching her out of her nowhere. Which Xander didn't have an issue doing. He was just worried he'd lose that special something by asking.[break][break]

Experience told him that people either got nervous or started acting extra when you asked to draw them. Which was captured in the artwork, making it feel less organic and staged.[break][break]

"Fuck it." Xander sighed, he'd just have to take that risk. With one hand inside the pocket of his letterman jacket and the other resting on one of his backpack's straps, Xander approached.[break][break]

"Hey lady," he said dryly, "Sorry to disturb your reading time, but I promise this won't take long. I wanted to ask if you're cool with me sketching you?" If he'd been feeling up to it, Xander might have smiled. Instead, he wore a stale, almost emotionless expression on his face.[break][break]

"If not, it's fine - I just didn't wanna bug you out by drawing you in secret like some kind of perv."
