Her efforts were barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things. But she couldn’t help but feel a small contentment in the sight of the few Wild Pokemon that sought refuge behind her walls for the briefest of respites before moving on.

Had she done all she could? Perhaps. Was it all for naught? Most likely, a sensation only confirmed as the earth quake beneath the massive enemy’s feet.

But the quake rustled her line of sight and by sheer coincidence she spotted the situation between the Unbound Hoopa and Zekrom. Quick she retrieved Steelix into its Pokeball and summoned one of her more Draconic fighters.

Minh the Salamence did not roar as she came onto the field, instead she focused on taking in what was going on, luckily Elinor was pointing right at the situation.

“LIGHT OF RUIN on the hands!” Fear mixed with certainty fueled the command that Elinor gave.

Minh fired off the bright pink and purple beam of fairy energy as quickly as she possibly could hoping only that her aim was good enough and that it would get there in time to help.

“I am sooo ready!” Elinor replied in turn. Beaming a bright eager smile, if one didn’t know better it could be assumed she might’ve been a new trainer. Alas she was not. Still, she would set upon the task of capturing with the enthusiasm of one.

And it didn’t take long before the first target was spotted.

A Palpitoad was merely going about its day, figuring that it might be neat to have a backup Water-Ground type, she whistled for the Talonflame’s attention and then pointed in the Palpitoads direction.

Elinor didn’t need to say any more as the flaming bird dove right in with an AERIAL ACE. The unfortunate Palpitoad didn’t stand much of a chance as the surprise attack led it to fall prey to the Talonflame’s talons. The bird even dragged it along the ground for a moment in a surprisingly viscous display before it gave up.

The Palpitoad was then laid before Elinor as a prize, one which she happily attempted to place within a Pokeball.

Metagross made some happy-metagross-noises at Josh’s recognition. It was nice to feel appreciated.

“Yeah riding one of these definitely takes some getting used to.” Elinor admitted. She was no expert on the matter, so she honestly couldn’t get into the nitty-gritty of saddle making with Josh, which was a shame.

“I’ve been visiting family in Alto Mare.” Elinor explained. “I was originally going to stay there longer, but homesickness got the better of me.” A small sigh. Perhaps staying in Alto Mare had been but a feeble attempt at running away from the chaos of Hoenn. But because she had been born and raised here, she craved it, and honestly she missed ’s company as well.

“So, I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t kept up with the news. How did that Dewford Two go?” She had only heard the briefest of mentions so far, though she hadn’t actively pursued an recaps of it either.

Much to Elinor’s surprise Andrea only had four badges. Elinor thought she would have had more by now. Still, she figured it would be better to not comment on that. Instead she focused on Andrea’s follow up question.

Elinor had to take a moment to remember. It’s been so long since she last thought of her Gym Progress, she wasn’t even certain she was going to continue it. “I’ve got seven badges, and then one minor Gym Badge.” She knew those didn’t really count, but hey she might as well respect the efforts of that Minor-Gym Leader.

As always when huge monsters appear everything quickly devolves into chaos. Someone was doing something over yonder, people were screaming. Was that infighting as well? A classic.

But Elinor closed her eyes and her ears to that. If people wanted to punch above their weight class she would let them. There were more important things to handle. Like the little people, the civilians, the wild Pokemon.

She kept doing what she was doing, Steelix erecting segments of walls with STONE EDGE for people and pokemon to run to and hide behind. She too had taken cover as the freezing gales of the Blizzard threatened to consume all within it. Admittedly her Steelix weren’t offered the same protection as Ice was slowly forming on it.

She wondered how long it would last. It’s Pokeball kept firmly in her hand ready to pull it in the moment it might become too much.

Kyurem hadn’t hurt her personally. But she saw the devastation at the Silent Icelands. She had spoken with , heard of her loss and the loss of several others. And she still remembered vividly how Necrozma had inflicted her with similar wounds.

Some part of her wanted to fight, but she had grown since then. She had accepted that some things she simply could not fight. And so, as she focused her efforts on saving those she could.

Many Pokemon tried to run from the blizzard but some proved too weak. They needed a momentary shelter from the roaring Blizzard. And Elinor was here to provide!

“Lix, create a stone wall there.” Elinor quickly commanded, her voice fighting against the wind. The Steelix by her side roared as it used STONE EDGE to pull huge stone spikes from the ground forming an impromptu wall against the snow, or at least trying to.

It didn’t take long before the first few wild Pokemon sought temporary respite there.

While and had promised each other a veritable slice-of-life montage at the hot-springs in Lavaridge, Elinor had found herself longing for a good Pokemon-Capture-Trip in the wilds.

This wasn’t supposed to be something fancy, nor was there any deeper meaning to it. Sure some might long to hide such a simple desire behind the fear of Kyurem’s return. But this time she would do no such thing. The old Elinor might, but the new and improved Elinor had accepted herself for what she was; a simple Ranger/Trainer that just wanted to roam a particular route for a while catching whatever she could find of mild interest.

And so she sat against a large rock, waiting for the Dragon Enthusiast to arrive. A Talonflame soaring high above looking out for incoming dangers while its trainer was taking it easy.

Josh seemed as eager as always, going straight for a hug the moment he saw an opportunity. And who was she to deny him? She had to admit. She had missed her fellow Ranger, and the small static shocks that he accidentally gave her didn’t dissuade her one bit.

With a chuckle she replied “So do I!” And with a cheeky grin on her lips she continued. “Lars will never let me hear the end of it, if I mess this up.” She could just imagine all the ways in which would be able to use a failure here against her.

But first they had to get to the couple in distress. Luckily their location was known and so, it was only a question of riding there. And as transportation for the day Elinor had picked her Metagross, a surprisingly uncommon sight in her roster.

Andrea’s haughty Ho-Ho-Ho was well earned. Chomper was strong indeed, and Elinor would trust the expert on that. And from a quick glance at the bright fire it just seemed even more truthful.

“I am sure you will, one day in the not too far future!” Elinor reassured the dragon enthusiast, noticing how her fake tail wiggled to and fro, pondering how it did that, and realized the question was probably best left unanswered.

Lars was quick to divulge one of his many tales of old. A small snicker escaped her, for in that moment Lars truly seemed to embody the old-man stereotype.

The conversation quickly turned to Andrea. “Met her at the Slateport Harbor when I arrived.” Elinor mentioned casually. “She seems to be doing pretty good.” Elinor acknowledged.

The Minccino had laid itself upon her shoulder by now, gently letting its tail wrap around her like a scarf.

“Did you know she has a Sygna suit that can fly? I didn’t even know they could do that.”

A shiver ran down her spine as the memory of hours spent amidst the arts of Alto Mare’s finest museums emerged. The paintings and art pieces hadn’t been bad, but the people. Oh Arceus saved her, the people had been the worst. Boring, old, and stuffy were but three nice mild ways of describing them.

Few of them had tried to hide the intentions behind their interest, and the few who had tried, had done so shoddily. Had it not been for the rest of the family, she wouldn’t have lasted as long as she did over there.

“Stuffy old people, and pretentious artists.” Elinor spoke in agreement, knowing well that it was snark, but figuring there was no harm in confirming it.

“Well, besides you, only knows.” She couldn’t remember if Lars knew the dragon enthusiast personally. Still, the name was readily given.

Andrea graciously accepted that family came first. This eased what little worries Elinor might’ve had.

Meanwhile Kommo-o was doing a pretty darn good job, the continued cracking of ice having become a veritable song, given the time of year one might even consider it a Jingle Bells.

So soundly and impressive had it become that Andrea took notice of it. “Not alone, but he could definitely take down one or two of their Pokemon.” A wide and proud smile on her lips.

“Yours are looking as strong as ever too!” She remarked, noting the efforts of Andrea’s Pokemon as well.
