[break][break] The words, as full of vitriol and undeniable animosity as they are, only fill the beast with joy. With glee at the abject hatred that is spilling from the warrior's words like a flowing river.

[break][break] Hatred, the very thing that drives him, is the same exact emotion that it sees reflected in Hitoshi Inoue's eyes.

[break][break] But what the other man would see back is nothing else but chilling gems of cerulean-blue, and that expanse of biting cold that seems to never end. There is nothing to be read from Chien-Pao, nothing it is willing to give.

[break][break] It only takes and takes.

[break][break] In it's silence, it's presence seems to speak volumes.

[break][break] The beast opens it's maw, snarling teeth and all, but instead of leaping to sink it's fangs deliciously into the human's throat, it simply slides past. It is energized by the sight of all this hostility, fur crackling with the emotion of it. It's eyes close and it slinks to the corner of the room, content in it's hateful embrace, as it disappears into the dark.

[break][break] "Hitoshi," the admin's voice echoes after several moments, his voices sounding barren and weak. His expression is fatigued, as if the exchange between the two caused him harm. "I'm tired now."

[break][break] "And it is time for you to go."

[break][break] Almost as if on command, the door slides open. The men who are guarding his cell look expectantly at the grunt.

[break][break] A soft, fatigued smile bids the boy farewell.

[break][break] "Come visit me tomorrow. I want to hear how your training is going."

[break][break] "Regardless of what happens to me, this is not an excuse for you to fall short in your paces."

[break][break] A hand presses against the small of his back.

[break][break] and finally, there's the glimmering silver of illeana reyes's hair. yet, what echoes more profoundly are the screams that are torn from her throat, flooding him with memories of PALKIA and their fracturing spatial dimension.

[break][break] but there is little much to question, because they are put to work.

[break][break] more than anyone, the rocket admin is familiar with the concept of PRISON CELLS. while others shout their dissent or protest, no doubt horrified by the sight of mangled bones and flesh as the alluring symphony drags bodies through the cell bars, at the expense of weak human bodies. much like BARNABY FINCH, jayden's gaze is unflinching as he witnesses the countless acts of torture.

[break][break] for him, this is familiar. for him, this is home.

[break][break] now you will work for us. you will sweat. you will bleed. all for us. your hard work will help us get back to where we belong.

[break][break] as his father had ingrained in him, as those like THEO BECKETT, Cillian Quinn and countless other high-ranking rockets had reminded him of many times before:

[break][break] immediately, memories flash forth like lightening: the sight of his brother's cell, the snarling jaws of aleks volkov, and the forceful grip of his father's hold.

[break][break] both he and aleks would've borne an ironic similarity now, sharing the frost-white hair as they did.

[break][break] jayden takes the offered mochi as he would have his mother's favored russian pirozhkis, easily, obediently, amicably. the sweetness explodes in his mouth when he swallows, only glancing thus at his other two cellmates to make sure they do the same.

[break][break] 'do this,' his gaze seems to say when he regards fern delaney in particular, hand brushing against theirs. a gentle squeeze. 'for me.'

[break][break] because he knows that the charlanatan would not have an easy time swallowing their pride, not in comparison to him. and the feeling of resentment that CHIEN PAO's existence should've brought was eerily empty now. there was nothing stopping him from obeying. the chains around his neck were a reminder, as translucent as they were.

[break][break] his head tilts towards BARNABY FINCH, twin-like eyes of cerulean following the soft curve of the fellow admin's back as they are released from their temporary cell. his suggestion is conceded, not that it is needed. jayden knows well how to act the role of the obedient; it was his whole life, just as it was Cillian Quinn or THEO BECKETT's.

[break][break] calculated eyes glimpse towards the familiar sight of Zev Harcourt and what he believes to be oscar clayton — after all, there are few that he knows to share a familiar gait as the former beast. he even glances towards the sight of someone he wonders is THEO BECKETT, but for some reason, it is the unfamiliar frame of a silver-haired that he finds himself beside. even though he does not know her, even though he cannot tell if she is a rocket or a league or an alien with bluish skin. something pulls him towards her, flinching as their fingers brush when he reaches for a crystal to polish.

[break][break] he flinches on instinct, the TOXIC CHAINS around his neck sliding away to reveal a tell-tale BITE MARK on his neck. hers. one that he incidentally shares with BARNABY FINCH and Elisabeth Fiorelli.

[break][break] "ah," he says, voice soft. "sorry."

[break][break] the tension mounts as their avian warden strides by, its gaze piercing into his skin like daggers, monitoring his response — or lack thereof. he senses the constriction of the chains around him, their painful grip tightening. seconds tick by, and with them, the FEZANDIPITI drifts away, as though these SCARRED ugly souls were within its direct gaze. almost as if it were orchestrated by fate.

relief blossoms in his chest at the sight of fern delaney speaking, a familiarly sarcastic quip, as if there is nothing at all strange about Zev Harcourt's screeching howls, or the arid dryness of this chamber they're apart of, or the darkness that seems to simply seep.

[break][break] affection is feather-light in jayden's eyes as he follows them, untangling from the floor. a thrum of ease fills him as he finds himself back to wakefulness, knowing now with certainty that at the very least, fern is all well and good. nothing seems to be out of the norm, not even as they plop right beside BARNABY FINCH.

[break][break] jayden wavers nearby, standing just across from both admins as he folds his arms.

[break][break] even hidden behind his mask, the adoration he feels for the other is obvious. nearly palpable. but not nearly as suffocating as it had been in that conference room with howard slayte all those weeks ago.

[break][break] "it isn't a rocket cell," he confirmed too, glancing backwards at the cells. the screaming has stopped now, but he can hear muted sounds of others — neighbors, perhaps? — and his expression sharpen at the sight of something blue. but these megalopolans are not the ones who have flooded sootopolis streets, the ones who aided them during meteno. no, the chains wrapped around their neck and body are too unfamiliar for that to be true.

[break][break] resentment trickles through the cuts in his skin, and he almost expects the resulting ice to encase around his heart. however, strangely, he finds the feeling in him lacking. his heart remains steadfast, beating with a resolute, persistent rhythm.

[break][break] "not mine either," he murmurs in agreement with fern delaney, eyes flickering bruised purple as he glances over at the intel admin. "yours?"

[break][break] "wait. what's that sound?"

[break][break] before he can complete his thought, a sudden chime interrupts. mechanical whirring fills the air, and abruptly, a platform begins to descend. jayden stepped away from them both, his curiosity peeked, as he looked through the cell's bars to see what nightmare would await them next.

vaguely, he can hear the screams.

[break][break] nightmares are nothing new to a person like jayden cross, who had spent a majority of his childhood and upbringing being raised by one. NIKOLAI CROSS - in many ways - embodied a nightmare himself, a man who's darkness bled with every step. jayden's nightmares were often sour with the memories of either him, or his brother. more recently, the reminder of FATHER WINTER 2 who had brought all of those demons to life once again.

[break][break] but it was ironic, in a way, that once the darkness slipped over his body, jayden felt an element of peace as well. in the waking world, he was cursed with the images of his patron — of the HATRED that embodied his very being. the thoughts were constant, of wanting to kill and needing to be killed. it was a constant state of warring emotion, one that he only felt reprieved when he fell asleep at his beloved's side.

[break][break] speaking of fern delaney, the fellow admin was one of the few reasons that jayden felt reprieve at all nowadays. it was as if chien pao simply could not bear to be near the charlatan, or his fickle companion.

[break][break] but neither of these things greeted jayden upon waking. there was just that vague sensation of someone screaming — a sound that grew louder and louder, sounding like gravel against a chalkboard. for a moment, the admin assumed that it was his own thoughts crashing down upon him once more. the burning resentment that so-often filled his chest, the chronic torment that had never quite been able to leave him.

[break][break] after all, such was his lifelong CURSE.

[break][break] but as his eyes adjusted to the darkness, and he felt the whistling sensation of coldness that was not quite the frost he had become numb to, jayden realized - with a starling flash - that this was not a nightmare. this was not his home. fern was not beside him. there were no cozy blankets to tangle himself in — only the frigid, unyielding sensation of stone beneath him.

[break][break] his eyes snapped open, locking onto fern delaney's limp body lying next to him. a wave of terror swept through him at the sight of their unmoving body.

[break][break] "fern!" he said with a sudden gasp, springing to his feet with urgency and immediately calling upon the ice that he had become so familiar with. yet instead, he was met with a suffocating grip around his throat, a haunting echo of Lulu Flint's grasp. it drove him to collapse to his knees, as he clawed at the sudden mask afixed onto his face. his expression, once serene as winter's frost, blazed with frantic panic as he searched desperately for the rocket scientist to plead his life, just as he had done in the giant chasm. but he did not see her. he could barely see in the bleeding dark. all he could see was —

[break][break] he blinked, catching the sight of someone lounging over the nearby cot.

[break][break] his fingers slipped away from the TOXIC CHAIN wringing his neck, feeling the air flood back into his lungs the moment he relinquished resistance.

[break][break] "bee." he would recognize that voice anywhere. "where are we?"

[break][break] the admin shifted uncertainly, kneeling over fern delaney's body, knuckles grazing over the other's cheek as he willed them to waken.

[break][break] all the while trying to ignore the sudden ache in his chest of something missing.

[break][break] but rather than fear, all jayden could feel was a sudden sense of relief.
