Between the jagged crystals and slits of sparkling light, darkness reigned supreme, suppressing their surroundings like a tyrannical leader defending it's domain against observers. If it hadn't been for Team Rocket, this would be the last place the councilwoman would willingly visit. So far removed from society and its noise, it was a nightmare to experience up close. It didn't help that, within this silence, dark rumors of the cavity were given all the freedom in the world to gnaw at the edges of her mind, tainting every step taken.

"Last known coordinates are a few more meters north,"she murmured to Gunner Graves, her gaze taking an additional second to sweep their surroundings every 5th step. To her other side, Blaziken stood, lofty and menacing, his attention caught onto their blind spots like a sailor searching for land.

Several minutes ago, when they were still pushing through the giant chasm, a report came in through the walkie. It was a harsh stir of panic-filled words, and while not much was gathered between the static and chaos, Gunner Graves barely managed to decipher a location.

But when they arrived...

"Tch. We're too late."

Two bodies were found sprawled out across the ground, crimson pooling around their silhouettes. From afar, it was hard to make out the details of their blank features or clothing, but one thing was for certain: this kill was fresh.

Gunner knelt beside the corpses, searching for clues. While he was not a forensics expert, he had seen enough death in his life to differentiate between methods of murder. [break][break]

"These people were cut open with a long blade," he observed, gloved fingers pulling back the sticky fabric of a jacket. "Looks like it's a clean cut, too, not serrated. Maybe caused by a Doublade or similar Pokémon." [break][break]

As he stood, he paid careful attention to the way his body groaned and ached. The injuries he'd sustained at the beginning of January had almost fully healed, but the occasional pains still haunted him. He hoped they wouldn't hold him back, not when Penelope needed him the most. [break][break]

Gunner's white-furred Zeraora, Banquo, sniffed the air and uttered a low rumble in warning. Shooting the feline Pokémon a glance, the agent tensed and reached for the gun holstered at his hip. [break][break]

"Miss Livy. Something's still here," he hissed.

A slithering vine hissed through the undercurrent of the caverns, its sickly green pallor shining with a spectral light amidst the crystals that glittered all around them.[break][break]

It searched and wound its way towards its target, one whose name burned brightly upon the back of a creature who lurked in the darkness behind two glowing ochre eyes.[break][break]

Upon discovering her presence, jaw-like thorns burst from the ground to seek to clamp around the woman and her companions, locking them in a briary enclave that festered and rotted with GRUDGES.[break][break]

The woman responsible for this would emerge moments later, but it'd be her own companion that would draw their attention next.[break][break]

Their HATRED and GRUDGES harmonized far better than Elisabeth had ever imagined they would.[break][break]

For the first time in a long time, she didn't feel she was fighting alone.

[break][break] Twin slashes. A scream. Blood seeping into a pool of crimson. Murder, not in malice, but in necessity. Those who clung to the losing side of the war were as good as gone.

[break][break] That was mere moments ago. Now, their presence melted into shadow, revealed only by the warning growl of the HBIC agent's Zeroara. It was quickly silenced by the sound of slithering vines, accompanied by a sudden crackle of sound. The feline rumbled, and the earth responded with a resounding crack.

"So presumptuous," The councilwoman shakes her head and squeezes her right hand into a fist, leveraging all the control they've gained these past few months to burn the vines off them with ease. "taking life without regard - are your egos so easily fragile that you require death to sate it?"

Resolve denies the urge to seek the comfort of Gunner Graves's presence. Their experience would have to guide them through this, creating communication through action, not words.

Blaziken takes an offensive position, moving in front of Penelope with lifted arms. Pull the trigger, and he'll spring forward.

In the background, hidden in the shadows, another soul makes it a curious approach.

GRUDGE and HATRED surged through Gunner, drawing a hiss from between his teeth. In the instant he saw two silhouettes, their eyes blazing ochre and icy in the darkness, he knew. [break][break]

He stood in the hellish depths where Ruinous power converged. [break][break]

A savage hostility coursed through him. He aimed it at the woman who had hurt GIDEON GRAVES, at the unfamiliar man who represented Team Rocket's atrocities. [break][break]

At each and every vile monster who possessed the power of the divine and used it to brutalize others. How dare they. How dare they and not he receive the strength to change the world. [break][break]

ENVY burned through Gunner. Gritting his teeth, he stood his ground at PENELOPE LIVY's side. His Zeraora crouched beside her Blaziken, every muscle coiled and tense, ready to leap into battle. [break][break]

"We're not running from the likes of you," Gunner spat.

The tinge of ENVY that bled into her GRUDGES slithered in with the insidiousness of an Ekans in a garden. Glaring at PENELOPE LIVY, then back at Gunner Graves, an incorrect assumption formed; brief, fleeting memories of GIDEON GRAVES in a meadow, holding the hand of another woman who looked just like her, raged within her mind with despair.[break][break]

She levelled the younger Graves brother with a dispassionate look, one as cold and heartless as he imagined her to always possess. Her hand rose then snapped itself into a fist, and with it, another series of briars burst up to lash at Gunner Graves and his Zeraora.[break][break]

If she couldn't have the simple pleasures that she'd wanted, then she'd deny them to the councilwoman, too.[break][break]
