what's left of his burger is wrapped in aluminum. he doesn't mind it, not having much appetite to begin with, and he'd rather listen and talk to her as that's much nicer and needed. he only realizes now how much he's missed her and how long it's been since he's seen her smile.

"what do you mean? i've always been nice."

the balled-up napkin finds the crook of his palm as he secures it, loading it up to fire when she least suspects it. for now, he returns to more serious matters, though it's not like his expression or tone reflects as much.

where else would matias be? nowhere, because he's a good person who adheres to the rules given to him.

just kidding. he's only at home because he'd been out the day prior and he doesn't want to run the risk of sneaking around too much. the surveillance in place is decent enough and he's sure there's only so much they could excuse. kyle just happens to come around at a convenient time.

he smiles at the short greeting.

"you look good too."

"can't do much else without alerting the league. they're so paranoid, honestly."

they are on opposing ends this time as matias has spent the majority of his life outdoors, both for hobby and duty, so the idea of attempting to spend the night here in ultra crater sounded tempting.

but as he always does with kyle, he relents, turning to prepare to leave before being interrupted.

peering into the bag, his eyes widen, and he sighs.

flowers remind him of Elisabeth Fiorelli. this would not be the first time he's thought of her since the incident atop mount chimney, the remnants of the CORRUPTED RED SHARD still flowing through his veins, but he buries the memories before they could rise.

he reaches out and accepts the bouquet with a soft smile, holding it closer to peruse through. "white hyacinths…lilies…huh. i don't know what these are." delphinium? he chooses not to guess.

looking back up at eddie, he nods, heeding their dibs before making a gesture off the porch.

he's sure she prefers it to the other kind of weird he had been in recent months. for obvious reasons, he doesn't bring up the comparison.

the balled-up napkin bounces off his head, landing conveniently in his lap. he grabs it just so he has something to do with his hands.

he knows. he would be a fool not to know. after all, it had been him who held the top champion when the SACRED FIRE consumed them, absolving them of too much yet not enough.

like her, he knows if he gets too close to the memory, it'll burn him.

his eyes follow her stretched arms to the ceiling, feigning some level of wonder; not much, but enough to make his point as he says, "wow, you're so strong."

and just as easily as she raised hers, he raises his arms when she lowers hers, holding them at eye level before flexing his fingers with equal ease.

"and gullible."

he laughs, arms lowering to his lap.

"they tell me i'm here for a few more weeks. i feel fine, though. better than i have for a while."

fine only because he chooses not to grieve yet. that will come later, in the privacy of his home and not in this hospital room.

who knew ollie morales had good taste? admittedly, the taste of the burger does change for a moment in his mouth upon the revelation, but he recognizes it to be out of pettiness no longer relevant.

there's no hiding the way his lips curl into a smile when she dabs ketchup off his lips. he's always preferred words of affirmation but this is nice, too, he finds.

"thanks," he licks his lips for good measure.

"that was the vibe i was going for. untouchable. unkillable. it's how i survived the war, but i should have left it in kanto. truth is, i'm just like you and everyone else."

then, smile turns to grin.

his head turns back to the serene lake before them, not minding how she stands behind the bench instead of accepting his invitation. he'd extended the branch; that's all he can do at this point.

"well, surprise."

despite what he has so loudly proclaimed before, MATIAS SILPH is no god nor is he invincible. he is flesh and blood, mortal like any other. he had just become good at escaping death.

the entire act of eating proves a herculean effort, everything from leaning forward to biting down on the burger. ketchup stains the corner of his lips. he chews, chews, chews, and swallows.

"mm, from arno's?"

he couldn't tell given the wrapper but the taste is familiar enough. he doesn't make the connection to how they'd eaten it together many months ago at his ranch.

a groan escapes him as he leans back, yet to realize his ketchup-stained lips.

free from the heavy influence that once controlled every fiber of his being, down to his thoughts and emotions, he looks at her with the same way, reflecting unmistakable confusion as he's unsure why it's there in the first place.

there are too many emotions for him to even attempt to parse through. asking is the simplest solution.

but it almost feels selfish to put the onus on her to tell him when he knows what she's been through; what hoenn's been through as a result of his hubris.
