The sky begins to fall, and with it, her dignity.[break][break]

Just as she rises to her feet, her heel skates along unsteady gravel, shook loose by the crumbling ceiling. She glances up, sucking in a trembling breath. She had never known fear like this moment. Her fingers clutch her phone and she stands, motionless and afraid, as Minior rain from the sky. [break][break]

They were going to die here, and for what? For a purple alien? For pictures of a centuries-old mural that would never see the light of day? That some old geezer would knock off too or something and pour over for hours and hours, potentially without end?[break][break]

But fingers grip her arm, jolting her out of her frozen state. ryuuzaki amemiya pulls, and he pulls hard, just before a chunk of rock comes down to crush her. She gasps, a cold sweat the evidence of her relief. Suzu blinks, shaking herself out of it before running after her older brother.[break][break]

"Yeah-- yeah, okay. I-I'm coming."[break][break]

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be that easy. It was never, ever that easy. [break][break]

Killian Decker's voice in her head encourages them to move with the implication that he and Lex are together. Of course, that's the plan, but plans change. The League appear to be blood-thirsty, or at least the attractive jock seems to be. [break][break]

A nearby explosion, though not on top of the siblings, has enough impact and consequence to reach them anyway. Out of view, it takes out Alexandra Briarwood temporarily. The wall next to Suzume crumbles, breaking under the echo. It explodes outward, catching Suzu off-guard and tearing skin. She cries out in pain, pulling away from Ryuuzaki in her surprise.[break][break]

But then she stumbles, and all of a sudden she is pinned beneath the rubble. Her ankle twists, maybe even breaks, and she screams.[break][break]

Those words are left unspoken, bitterness building in the back of her throat. But all of that seems to fade, caught off guard as his hand catches her chin. Suzume breathes out softly, eyes widening for a moment in surprise before hardening defensively. Unexpected physical touch was jarring, even from him.[break][break]

Even though, despite pulling away, she almost wishes she hadn't.[break][break]

"Space? Why the fuck would I need space for? We haven't seen each other since we were little kids, that's plenty of space already."[break][break]

There is hurt in her voice, louder than the pain she feels when she speaks. Her lip bleeds and she licks at it angrily, sucking in air at the sting.[break][break]

"You don't care, Xan. Because if you did, you wouldn't have left me behind then- and you wouldn't have left me behind on that bus. I'm not important to you."[break][break]

Warmth as a result of anger, she wills herself to believe, rises in her face as his gold eyes search her face. His attention to detail, his lingering attention, his concern, is overwhelming. But it also too much, a false reminder of her self-doubt. He might linger on her ugliness too long, might look away sharply to avoid.[break][break]

"Why the fuck're you staring at me?"[break][break]

Suzu shrugs, admittedly amused and impressed by his flat response.[break][break]

"Fair, valid, yeah. Fuck 'em."[break][break]

She chuckles a bit, but smiling hurts, so she sucks in a breath and tilts her chin away. Her tongue swipes against raw skin and she can taste iron. It makes her eyes squeeze shut tight for a moment, choking that pain down. [break][break]

One hand rises to brush at her lip, relieved to see that her swipe comes back dry.[break][break]

But her green eyes shift back to Xander with surprise, or maybe a convoluted mixture of shock and disappointment. The way he said that put into words what she'd already feared: he was avoiding her. [break][break]

Why did that hurt? It wasn't as if he owed her his presence, it wasn't as if it even mattered.[break][break]

And he won't look her in the eye and, for a moment, she forgets about the bruise beneath her eye and the busted lip. Her fingers brush the deep cut along her cheek, the one that had been healed several times over until it was a permanent, ugly reminder.[break][break]

He thought she was ugly, didn't he? [break][break]

Suzume opens her mouth to rip into him, but all of a sudden he's closed the distance and his hand is inside of her hood. It catches her off guard and she wants to step away but she can't. Caught like a deer in headlights, she stares up at him, unable to move. The wind catches her cuts and she winces at the cold as it stings raw skin.[break][break]

"Just a scrap. What do you care, anyway? Haven't heard a word from you since you bailed on me on that bus."[break][break]

She can't mask the hurt in her voice as much as she wanted to. She glances at the ground, turning her face away from him and to the ground, showing to him in full-view the horrific scar across her left cheek.[break][break]

"Yeah.. the good old days."[break][break]

There is something bittersweet in that statement, one that prompts her to not look her brother in the eye. She focuses instead on the carvings beneath her fingertips, the coolness of the stone. Although none of it makes sense, she chooses to pour her energy into that rather than the mix of feelings she felt bubbling to the surface.[break][break]

She is caught by a particular painting, unaware at first of the bigger picture. Only when her Zorua hovers between them and Ryuu calls out to her does she look up. And when she does, a breathless sound of awe escapes her as she stares up at the mural. It is beautiful in ways she cannot describe. [break][break]

At his request she reaches for her phone, opening the camera app to take photos. With a steady hand she does her best to capture every inch of it, using one hand on occasion to brush moss and dust. [break][break]

Footsteps echo down a nearby tunnel and she feels the pressing need to hurry. Ryuu's voice in her head is but a whisper as he temporarily heads away. [break][break]

"Sure, okay. Be safe, brother."[break][break]

Of course, as if on cue, all hell breaks loose. What sounds like thunder splits open the cave in blinding light- or if it doesn't, earsplitting noise. The panic forces her to drop her phone, and in the dark where she can't see it face-down with her black phone case, she's fumbling.[break][break]

"Oh, fuck!"[break][break]

Another beam of light shoots into the sky and her Zorua snatches up the phone with a muffled noise of alarm. [break][break]

So much for staying low-key, right?[break][break]

"Hey-- that was all of your own volition, I never asked you to do that.. or to get caught."[break][break]

She frowns, but there is a note of mischief in it, fondness in the memories. Suzu watches him for a moment as he fidgets with the wrapper. Eventually, she returns to her sandwich, relishing in the crush of lettuce and the smoked cheese.[break][break]

Her sighing as she eats is indicative of her enjoyment. It might very well be the first time in a long time that she's truly relaxed and enjoyed herself. [break][break]

"Sure, but it was your almost-expired food I made them with."[break][break]

The change in attitude from her brother catches her off-guard. Mid-chew, the woman reclines on her butt, cross-legged sitting position to watch him. As children, the two had been inseparable. It had been easy for them to tell each other just about anything- including their thoughts and feelings. So to see him now, reluctant to reciprocate.. felt strange.[break][break]

It put into perspective how drastically things had changed. How quickly the two had drifted apart. [break][break]

Ryuuzaki deflects, redirecting the conversation back to her arrival in Slateport. She lowers the sandwich, using her thumb to whisk away crumbs.[break][break]

"Good! Yeah, its been nice."[break][break]

She muses over his suggestion to decorate and she chuckles, glancing at Skadi.[break][break]

"What, and replace those lovely piles of bones Skadi left for me? You'll hurt her feelings, Ryuu!"[break][break]

Yes, she had found a few left behind even after his deep-cleaning. And no, she hadn't minded much. [break][break]

"I like it here, Ryuu, really. It's been nice to have someplace reliable to come back to."[break][break]

Each step against the pavement felt like someone was jackhammering a nail into the space behind her eye. The bright lights above that illuminate her path are painful and she winces and blinks away from them. Some streets are worse than others, but paranoia prevents her from taking the darker routes. [break][break]

Home. That was where she wanted to be. ryuuzaki amemiya was waiting for her, surely- or perhaps he was on his own errand and unaware she was even gone. She lets out a short, harsh laugh, one of self-pity and disappointment. [break][break]

But the ID card she'd been retrieving was still pinched between two fingers in the folds of her oversized hoodie. For the most part, they hid the abuse. It just couldn't hide the cut on her bottom lip and the cresent-shaped cut on her other cheek. He'd spared her scarred up face in favor of giving her a new one. It stings whenever she thinks too hard about it or winces when her busted lip splits again.[break][break]

Even still, despite her injuries, they were mild in comparison. She'd done her job perfectly, really, and she'd gotten out of there unrecognized and nothing but an insignificant inconvenience for the man she'd been sent to steal from. Just some punk kid out on the streets begging for hand-outs.[break][break]

He wouldn't miss this old thing, right?[break][break]

Suzume's attention skirts across the road to the man caught in the light of a streetlamp. She pauses, tensing, fully prepared to pick a fight. But the man doesn't appear to see her, in return, and instead begins shouting up to the night sky. Familiarity washes over her like a cold washcloth against her headache. [break][break]

"I'm sure the whole neighborhood hates it too, Xan."[break][break]

She tilts her head at the man, hoodie masking her face. But the angle of the light might shine on her blossoming bruises.[break][break]

And frankly, the idea of her Spearow eating them wasn't particularly appetizing either. Thankfully, the bird mostly did that in private. [break][break]

She shudders at the thought, breaking past self-control to delve into the basket. The moment she gets her hands on food she digs in, hardly waiting for her brother to take his pick.[break][break]

"I don't keep food in my pockets, Ryuu. Well- except this, but I was saving it for you."[break][break]

She shifts, pulling out a chocolate bar. At this point it's a little melted as a result of her forgetfulness and the heat of her butt on the warm sand. But the thought is there.[break][break]

"Just.. been a while since I've had a real, home-made sandwich like this. I've missed you, Ryuu."[break][break]

Suzume regards him thoughtfully, following not far behind. Her attention slides past his expert approach in clearing the countertop to survey the room. Slowly, carefully, the woman shrugs her own jacket off and sets it along with her purse on a nearby chair. From what she can see, she is the only one around.[break][break]

"Is this place even open?"[break][break]

But all inflection behind that statement fades with the smell of his cooking and the rhythmic sound of his agile hands. She slides into a seat nearby to observe, resting her chin in one hand. Her other hand drums an absent-minded tune on the counter, and she glances up when he speaks.[break][break]

"Mmm.. it smells and looks fantastic."[break][break]

Her stomach growls in anticipation, a noisy, unbecoming sound for the woman. But she seems not at all concerned, and it takes all of her self control to swap her attention from the colourful plate to the young man.[break][break]

"Compliments to the chef, hmm?"[break][break]

Suzume blinks, stunned into silence as he sets the eggs down and brushes past her. There is a moment where she realizes she should say something, where she should respond. But she doesn't. [break][break]

She doesn't, and she instead watches as his lips move and his disgust leaks out and all she can think is that she's made a mistake. She wants to say 'no, please, stay' but those words feel like acid. They bubble in her stomach and she feels like she might vomit.[break][break]

The bus lurches to a stop as Xander begins making his way to the front to get off. [break][break]

In her mind, she reaches for him as she had when they were kids. Her fingers find the back of his jacket, holding him back.[break][break]

But in reality, Xander has already stepped off of the bus and is making his way as far away from her as he can get.[break][break]

She feels cold, then, and lonely. It makes her sick, and she tucks the eggs closer to her. The rest of the bus trip would be held in awkward silence as she sifts through what had just happened- what she had just allowed to happen. [break][break]

But she doesn't look back. She never looks back.[break][break]

One after another, the group begins to separate. Killian's voice in her head is a comfort, for a moment, before it's gone. Suzume glances to Lex not long after, sharp eyes settling on the woman. Though her expression never changes, Suzu can pick up on some vague disturbance in the force, some shadow of doubt that passes between the two.[break][break]

But just as quickly as it appears, it is gone. Alexandra Briarwood glances to her, and Suzu straightens her back to meet her.[break][break]

"It can, ma'am. Don't worry about us, we will be fine."[break][break]

Her Zorua glances up at her through the illusion, tail wagging gently from side to side. Nothing more is shared with the older woman, and she refocuses on her brother instead.[break][break]

"I'm with you, Ryuu."[break][break]

And where Ryuuzaki traces his fingers, hers are not far behind. She catches her fingernails against grooves in the wall too perfect to be natural. They trace over mysteries, a story yet untold. It takes her breath away as the pair of them continue ahead.[break][break]

"We should get close enough to take photos."[break][break]

Suzume stops, having had the mind to interrupt him should he start talking again. Despite her better judgement, she was looking for a fight even if she wasn't willing to admit it. But his flat response, followed by an awkward pause and a correction leaves her brain short-circuiting. [break][break]

Something fluttery and nauseating flutters in the pit of her stomach and in her chest. It makes her heart beat louder and her ears to grow hot. She can hear someone from behind one of the seats let out a soft gasp. Their whispering is overwhelming and she wished it would stop.[break][break]

She wanted the bus to stop.[break][break]
She wanted the noise to stop.[break][break]
She wanted the thunder in her chest and in her veins and in her head to stop.[break][break]

"Just shut up."[break][break]

But she sits down on the very edge of the seat. Like a child, she pouts and seems agitated and irritable. Suzume glances up at him briefly, but she retains her stubborn attitude.[break][break]

"Just sit down, Xan. You're making a scene."[break][break]

More than one blanket? Why? Was he sharing it with someone else?[break][break]

A small flame of emotion flares. It feels like anger but tastes bitter, and she chokes it down out of fear. What was wrong with her? Why was she feeling so twisted up and nauseous? Why had she immediately jumped to the conclusion that he might be sharing his space with someone else? Why did that matter? Why did that make her so angry?[break][break]

So much so that when he comments on wanting to visit, her first instinct is to reject him. But with that white-hot flash of anger, she feels immediate regret that halts her knee-jerk reaction to slam dunk his attempts to be friendly. [break][break]

In which case, she says nothing.[break][break]

And, of course, the public waits with bated breath for what comes next out of this young and in love couple.[break][break]

"What would I want from you? What do you want from me, huh? You're being ridiculous."[break][break]

But was he? [break][break]

She is flustered, responding immediately and without putting thought behind her words or actions. The bus comes to a halt but she isn't paying any real attention so she stumbles down the aisle after losing her balance. Suzu catches herself on the bench he's sitting on, gripping the fake leather back with ferocity.[break][break]

"I don't want to sit with you."[break][break]

Because when she did, it felt like she could feel every nerve of hers on fire, and couldn't figure out why.[break][break]

Just what was this strange feeling in her chest? Like a breath stuck halfway. She wants to sneeze, or cough, or scream.[break][break]

It was excruciating, even though it was a feeling meant to bring joy. She should be happy to see him, right? He was an old friend, and yet this feeling felt like heat in her veins where she had felt only the cold. Suzu swallows the lump in her throat with force, scowling at the man before her and his snarky attitude.[break][break]

"And use toilet paper for a blanket? Thanks, but I'll pass. You never were a good host when we were kids."[break][break]

She tilts her chin upward, haughty in expression with an added sniff of indignance.[break][break]

"I've got my own place now."[break][break]

Suzu scuffs the toe of her shoe against the sidewalk, falling into mutual silence. It didn't feel awkward, other than the fact it left her alone with her thoughts. She felt alien, with feelings that weren't her own, weren't recognizable. He gets on her nerves more than she remembers he had, too. [break][break]

There was this bubble of agitation buried, and it bursts when his shoulder bumps against hers. Frankly, she hadn't even really been aware she'd been sitting. She vaguely remembered stepping onto the bus and heading down the aisle with Xander in tow. But he pulls her back down to reality and rather than react calmly, Suzu's face contorts into one of outrage.[break][break]

Trained in stealth, in espionage, in keeping herself in check; but when it came to him, all of that crumbled away. It left her damaged, reactive, unsure how to navigate socializing. His comment throws her off her game, dunks her head in the proverbial ice bin, and she comes up gasping.[break][break]

"Why are you so weird?"[break][break]

The woman stands up abruptly, drawing the attention of virtually the entire bus save for the few with earbuds in. Warmth radiates in her face in what she mistakes as anger. But it wasn't, and it was for that reason she was angry: because she had no idea why his touch had sent her into such a panic.[break][break]

"I don't need a stupid picture of you. I'm not eight."[break][break]
