"Wha-, Ryuu, I'm not that short. I'm perfectly average, you bastard."[break][break]

She swats at him, ducking down and out from under his hand when his fingers muss up her hair. But she catches that twinkle of mirth and she finds that it is grounding. Suzume is at peace standing next to her brother, free of burdens and of worries- if only temporarily. The woman's gaze follows his, past the horizon to the screeching Wingull above them.[break][break]

And just like that, the peaceful feeling in the pit of her stomach is replaced with exasperation and annoyance. Though Ryuu's suggestion of eating bugs by accident certainly would have ruined the mood just the same. [break][break]

Suzu sticks her tongue out in disgust at the mere thought.[break][break]

"Thanks for that incredibly disgusting mental image."[break][break]

Her attention shifts to her Spearow, however, who seemed more than happy to chow down on some bugs. Unfortunately for him, however, there were little to none to be had out on the beach. Regardless, the feisty bird abandons her to go and rest in the shade of the tree. He tucks his head beneath one wing, and Suzu returns to Ryuu.[break][break]

"Tch-- you'd better dig in before you lose your meal to me."[break][break]

But the woman sets herself down on the mat before promptly digging into their basket of prepared sandwiches and snacks. She wastes no time in politeness or letting her brother take his pick- she was hungry.[break][break]

Suzume leans back after her delivery, and her flat expression followed immediately by her eye-roll is evidence enough that Rocket's signature catchphrase was an old and tired one. Oh, and cheesy. [break][break]

She'd been hoping that the 'hail hydreigon' would stick, but apparently, it hadn't. Instead, this guy was laughing at her, laughing. As if she were making some funny joke or she'd said something really really stupid. Someway, somehow, Suzu refrains from expressing her disappointment and instead settles on the prospect of food.[break][break]

Everything the man had mentioned sounded good, but she visibly inclined her head at the mention of fried Octillery.[break][break]

"I don't mind waiting for a quality meal. It's been a while."[break][break]

Or at least, it had been a while since she'd had real seafood native to a region. Hoenn was probably famous for it, maybe. Regardless, fried Octillery made her stomach growl in anticipation, and she always went with her gut.[break][break]

ryuuzaki amemiya's carefree energy, his childishness, takes Suzu by surprise. Perhaps it shouldn't, but after years apart and in the belly of an important assignment, one that could very well mean life or death in the eyes of the higher-ups, it is jarring.[break][break]

She almost opens her mouth to warn him, but not even the voice inside her head can keep up with his horrendous singing. That, and she had been transfixed on his tongue sticking out at her. The woman was bewildered, without comprehensible thought.[break][break]

And then Killian Decker descends upon him with a tired fury. It reminded her in that moment of THEO BECKETT. The man's quiet disgust had a power to move mountains despite him not ever lifting a hand. She'd learned to see the signs, to know whether to expect a beating or silence. She preferred the beating.[break][break]

It is because of that fear that she doesn't move, doesn't choose to intercept the man whose fingers dig into her brother's shoulder. She can't hear what he says behind veiled thoughts - and it is in that silence that she feels her toes go numb. Fortunately, the moment is fleeting, and Killian's orders come through.[break][break]

Stay close.[break][break]

She could do that.[break][break]

Alexandra Briarwood releases a Zoroark and she follows suit with her own miniature version. Where the powerful Zoroark's illusion may falter, or where their party might slip, hers would cover the difference. The little black and red pup hastily making due with what it had, seamlessly blending the crew to disguise them from being seen.[break][break]

And Suzu takes note of the fire behind Ryuu's eyes. The desire, the passion for blood, to sink his teeth in, bury his dagger in to the hilt. She feels it too, feels that promise of adrenaline, that rush, that passion. She smiles, kindred spirits.[break][break]

There is a moment, although fleeting, in which memories bubble to the surface before they are choked down. Her eyes might widen in surprise, though she wouldn't acknowledge it.[break][break]

But for a moment, she remembers her hand in his, how warm he had felt as she pulled him through the darkness.[break][break]

He admits that she deserves better and she frowns, displeased with the defeated tone. But she doesn't push it because, despite how stubborn she had been in her youth to get under his skin- they're both adults now. His happiness shouldn't be any of her concern, and it hadn't been then either.[break][break]

Still though..[break][break]

Suzu blinks, instead, at the forward retort. Her eyes narrow in surprise and mild disgust, visibly thrown off by his answer.[break][break]

"That's not how that works. The guy is supposed to call the girl."[break][break]

And for a moment, she blushes, jerking her chin away to take a breath. How strange.[break][break]

It is fortunate that she had been able to deflect that uncomfortable, familiar emotion by putting the eggs into his arms. His blustering amuses her immensely and all previous embarrassment fades away with the fire of her sarcasm.[break][break]

"Oh yes, we are doing this. You're stuck with me now- besides, it's not like you had anything planned other than moping around town, surely."[break][break]

Her lips curl into a satisfied smile and she walks past him, shoulder brushing his. When she's far enough ahead and he questions where they're going, she spins on her heel to wink at him.[break][break]

"Slateport. And then you're taking me to dinner."[break][break]

If she was being honest, she hadn't chosen this particular restaurant to stand in front of out of coincidence. She was simply very, very good at looking nonchalant and out of place. Given the building's affiliation with Rocket business, she had been specifically suggested to come here. Said that it'd be a good way to get reacquainted with her peers.[break][break]

Frankly, all she cared about right now was whether or not they served food. The man's pause is not promising, and she glances over her shoulder to deflect her impatience. With a scuff of her heel, however, she's drawn back in while he speaks. Her eyes widen with renewed interest both at the promise of food, and the bulge in his chest pocket.[break][break]

"Well.. since you're offering."[break][break]

It occurs to her only now what time it must be. Perhaps she was still severely jetlagged from arriving in Hoenn that her concept of what time lunch was was still foggy. She doesn't bring it up, but the spine-tingling sensation of mild embarrassment still remains.[break][break]

Suzume approaches him, green eyes swapping from his chest pocket to his face.[break][break]

"Hail Hydreigon."[break][break]

She whispers it like a secret just between them.[break][break]

Killian Decker's anxiety, whether he likes it or not, is contagious. Suzu's sharp eyes watch him carefully, but she expresses caution. Rather than voice the obvious and inevitably piss him off by announcing his fear has a scent, she stays silent. Instead, she glances to ryuuzaki amemiya in the hopes that he might understand- not that he can do anything about it either. [break][break]

Thankfully, the voice inside her head that relays Killian's thoughts is a distraction. Her attention is drawn away from her brother, from Killian, from the woman with the bright red hair, and to the waterfall. Its idle burbling nearly masks the soft voice of another- but even still, Rocket sees all.[break][break]

Her face is stony, virtually unreadable, as Killian looks back at the siblings. Suzu meets his gaze confidently, offering him a curt nod to his orders. She was good at laying low and swooping in.[break][break]

What he saw was her good side.[break][break]

Minding her business, perusing the beauty of the locale, savouring the sights, smells and senses of the city. It felt different in a way she couldn't explain- and that included the general populace.[break][break]

Someone bursts out the front door of a restaurant she'd been staring up at. The name was unfamiliar and new, she presumed, and she was distractedly attempting to read it. Of course, that attempt quickly fails the moment the wild-eyed somebody bursts out to startle her. [break][break]

And then she turns the other cheek to face him, giving him full view of the gruesome scar that sullied her beauty. It was a test, one that most men failed. They saw in her a beautiful woman and were almost always surprised and disgusted by her face when they witnessed it fully. [break][break]

She chalked it up to men being pathetic and intimidated, unable to handle a woman who might potentially take them in a fist fight.[break][break]

"Umm.. checking out food joints. You work here?"[break][break]

She gestures half-heartedly to the man's getup.[break][break]

Two years.. it had been that long, hadn't it? Two years of arduous, grueling training, of punishment, of pain. She bore more scars now than she did then. She had become cold and cruel, but had she become what he said she was? Was she a tool?[break][break]

It left a bitter taste in her mouth, like bile she couldn't swallow and yet still it burned. She needed an antacid.[break][break]

"Brother."[break][break]

Her voice is cool, an underlying warning. She is not threatening, no, because that is not what she had been taught. The intimidation factor goes to Beckett, and he delivers with a choice that makes her skin crawl.[break][break]

Free to decide whatever she wants to do.[break][break]

But the way he says this bears weight and she is weak. He speaks her name and she can't help but feel like she is crumbling. It's a pity how easy it is to mistake fear and submission for confidence and respect.[break][break]

"Do not coddle, me Ryuu. We will have plenty of time to catch up later."[break][break]

She can hear his outrage, his desperate attempt to reach into her and pull out the same little girl he knew. By some shred of familiarity it works, indicative by the slight dip of her head. There is pleading in the vibrant green of her eyes; a promise.[break][break]

They were poised, images of perfection. Their feet hardly touched the ground as they moved in unison, barely touching despite how close they came to one another. It was mesmerizing, like a secret shared b etween close friends.[break][break]

It reminded her of her own time spent learning the art of ballet. She remembered how tight the leotard had been, how slim it'd made her so that she would stand alongside the other young girls and boys as nothing short of pretty and perfect. She remembered how much effort she had put into being perfect, of how her ankles protested and her arms grew tired. [break][break]

But the Gardevoir showed no signs of fatigue or discomfort. They simply were perfection.[break][break]

And Suzu's jealousy pinches the bridge of her nose as she sends her Zorua in, disguised as one of them. It was time to break up the recital and tear down that sickening display of beauty. [break][break]

She throws a pokeball into the fray of confusion and fear, unfazed by the blood and the panic.[break][break]

Those words weigh heavily at the back of her mind. Though Theo doesn't stare daggers into the base of her skull, specifically, she can still feel his distaste. It is like bile in the back of her throat- and it pushes her to recoil from her brother's touch.[break][break]

His comfort, his warmth had been overwhelming. Without it, she felt cold, hollow- but secure. She was twisted to feel vulnerable in a position of affection, to feel safer standing on her own two feet with no arms wrapped around her shoulders. [break][break]

Suzu's attention flicks to Theo suddenly at his next comment. They had places to be, how could she have forgotten? Like a moth to flame she is drawn to the man, to her mentor, her guide. Ryuu might have been that for her once, but not any longer.[break][break]

"My apologies, sir. It won't happen again."[break][break]

There is dread beneath the surface of her apology, an understanding that their display of affection could bring her punishment.[break][break]

Instinctively, Suzume curls her fine fingers into a fist and wastes no time in delivering it into a solid punch to the man's shoulder where it connects to his chest. [break][break]

"It's been two years or more, and all you've got for me is that dry-ass hello? I deserve better."[break][break]

Her hand falls back to her side, unclenched. There is a numb feeling that crawls up past her shoulder and down her spine. Familiarity, the natural way in which she'd fallen back into something akin to comfort. It was foreign now, and she hangs in the balance of it awkwardly for a moment before pulling herself back in. Like gathering her reins and pulling her back in.[break][break]

"When did that happen? Last time I saw you, you were still in Sinnoh feeling sorry for yourself."[break][break]

She squints, looking him up and down. But he gestures toward her bundle of eggs. At the mention of her eggs, she unbuckles them from herself to hand them off to Xander instead.[break][break]

"Nope- that's all you. Thanks for the offer, Xan! I'd love to hand this off on you!"[break][break]

There is an amused smirk crawling across her face, disjointed by the gruesome scar that lines her cheek. [break][break]

Agitation crawls across her skin like flash paper, ignited, but in a blink the feeling is gone.[break][break]

Theo continues to speak to her but all of a sudden his words seem far away. She's seen his expression change, seen his eyes resettle as if something had pulled him away briefly. Recognition is reflected in his dark eyes, something unmistakable. [break][break]

Suzume is rigid, obedient, but distracted. Her response is hurried in favor of glancing back to see what had caught her eye. Warmth twists in her gut like a knife, bittersweet, forbidden. [break][break]
