"That's the struggle, isn't it," Bill said. He spoke with the slow certainty of a man who knows many things. "We fight until we can't anymore, and then we lay down to die, exhausted by the world we tried to change."

"Did you do enough?" Bill asked, without malice. A semi-rhetorical question, as much aimed at Chu-e as it was at himself. "Are you happy with the impact you made?"

"Where are you based?" Bill asked, "because if you're lacking for peace and quiet you can always drop by my place in Sootopolis." There were hundreds of small, quiet places in the city. Places where someone could just sink into the sand or stone and disappear for a while.

"I can appreciate a little peace and quiet," Bill said. He thought of his life as analogous to the ocean, with periods of vast, open quiet, and times of tumultuous storms. Most of the time though, it was simply filled with rolling waves, pleasing to look at, and hiding untold secrets far beneath. "I spent ten years away in my own little corner of paradise," he said, reaching into his pocket and throwing a treat to Chu-e's dog. "I'm ready to be someone again."

Bill wandered the beach, looking for another battle. Someone famous preferably. There were gym leaders and avatars and dozens of rangers here today. There. He recognized the man from the dossiers that Rocket had. Perfect.

"Hey Matias," Bill said, "my name's Bill. I'm Lars Anderson's dad."

At Lulu's suggestion, Bill nodded his head, and started to pray. "Cian, may Arceus grant you the strength to accept this loss with grace and poise,-"
Mawile sucker punched Salazzle, sending burning spit and caustic blood spraying from the reptile's mouth. Salazzle hit the ground.
"-wisdom, so that you may learn from your defeat,-"
She scrabbled back to her feet. Her tongue flickered. It was a long, red-hot ribbon, thick with blood.
"-and charity, so that you can share those gifts with Lulu, whose Pokemon is about to be buried under ten tons of ice."
Salazzle's tongue lashed out at Mawile, attempting to drive it backwards, straight into the oncoming avalanche.

Bill smiled. "True, true. Just another nobody. And how is the civilian life treating you these days?" he asked, soaking up the sun's rays.

Salazzle jumped back at the harsh snapping. Her tongue whipped out, striking the rawhide and covering it in burning, poisonous spit.

Bill grasped Melody's hand and helped her up onto the deck of the boat. "Welcome aboard," he said, gesturing to the front of the deck, where they would have the best view of the battle to come. "It's been a while since I've had a celebrity on deck."

"I didn't teach Lars, no. He was always stubborn, and had to find his own way to do things. A mixed blessing. He has excelled in some areas, and in others repeated my mistakes." Bill nodded slowly. He was proud of Lars, but it was unfortunate how much his son had followed in his footsteps.

Bill stood on the deck of his boat, looking down into the water, where Milotic was swirling between the coral and sunken ships. His sunglasses were tucked into his pristine hair, and his sun shone with a sheen of sunscreen. "I sure hope so," Bill said, his clear eyes locked onto the form of the currently un-kidnapped gym leader. "I'm Bill Anderson, Lars' dad. You must be Melody."

The air became heavy. Thick with fear and shock and gathering lightning. Static filled Bill's lungs as the bolt found his Milotic, charring the creature in an instant and throwing its charred body tumbling down the beach like driftwood.

Bill noted it, but had eyes only for the creature that had fried his strongest Pokemon. "You may be recruiting, but League already has the strongest trainers!" Bill said, raising his voice. His sermon tones carried across the crowd, easily picked up by the cameras, and heard by everyone present. "The Andersons are League through and through, and if I don't take you down here and now, you can bet that Laurence Anderson will be the one to freeze that smug smile from your face."

A dozen bursts of hard light solidified on the sand, hemming in Gavin. Powerful Pokemon. Battle trained, ruthless, and all borrowed from the Team Rocket armory. Krookodile and Feraligatr blocked Gavin's retreat to the sea. Rough reptiles with ready jaws. They growled, low and deep, preparing to Crunch their opponent to bone cips.

To his left and right, Nidoqueen, Crustle, Kabutops, Sawk. Brawlers and wallers, all closing in on the 'trapped' underboss.
Sawk cracked its knuckled, Kabutops sharpened its scythes, and Nidoqueen and Crustle tilted forward, digging heavy feet into the sand as they prepared a charge that would crush Gavin between them.

At Bill's side, facing the underboss head on, were Lurantis and Decidueye, the former crouched and ready to spring, and the latter with an arrow drawn, nocked, and aimed at Gavin.

"It ends here, Gavin," Bill said, with resonant finality. The air was thick with sweat and the humidity of the gathering storm. Nobody blinked. Decidueye loosed its arrow, which sped towards Gavin's throat.

binacle went again! Again! again! again!

Chill descended on their tournament. It cut the Summer air like a knife through boating rope. It stung like December waves, and pressed down on Bill like six feet of frozen soil. It was a deathly curse, made manifest by a being of ice.

Bill looked around, but Articuno wasn't here. The bird is working through Lars. He realized, as he looked over at his son with pride and glory in his eyes. He's an avatar. It's...terrifying. Bill grinned, his teeth creaking in the painful cold.

Despite the deathly blizzard, Binacle made one last attempt. One last run at victory before she succumbed to the chill.

binacle went again!Again!

"In the tournament?" Bill asked, just registering what Lars had said. "I didn't know he was a battler. Yeah I've met up with him. I mentioned it last time, remember?"

Meanwhile, the heroic Binacle went in for another round against the machine. He grasped the level, by now more than familiar with its intricacies and torque. With a twist and a heave, he cranked it a forth time!
