It feels weird to address him as such. It feels even weirder to be meeting with Remiel like this at all, actually. Luka sits behind her desk at the Lilycove ranger base, her face a mask of professional politeness while her foot taps restlessly against the floor.[break][break]

Her work with the ranger's amnesty program makes such a meeting inevitable, but she still doesn't know how to act around the prince. They hadn't really spoken in any capacity since she'd been saved from Lulu Flint's lab. That's a bit unfair of her, perhaps, but he hadn't sought her out either. Perhaps they both realized that they needed space from one another.[break][break]

But now they're here, and the least she can do is be cordial.[break][break]

Luka had always been happily oblivious to the resentment Illeana held against her. She had felt the wall between them, and had wondered about it's origins, but had never felt it appropriate to pry.[break][break]

But it seems to have eroded away, bit by bit. She meets the offered smile with one of her own, warm as sunlight and twice as bright. It's very cheering to think that they might actually get along.[break][break]

"I have! I've been, um...busy. You know how it is, I'm sure. Maybe, um...i-if it's not too much trouble, maybe I'll stop by the lab sometime?"[break][break]

Her smile this time is a little more hesitant, but there's a girlish sort of hope behind it.[break][break]

While they exchange pleasantries, her Sylveon returns the bark with a soft yip of her own, and wiggles her ribbons in greeting. "I didn't realize you battled," Luka says, which is silly to assume. "Your Eevee is sooo cute!"[break][break]

Sugar looks up at her, clearly affronted. "Don't worry," she whispers, "You were cuter, I promise!"

Ages ago, when she'd first arrived in Hoenn, John Sullivan had been one of the first people she'd battled.[break][break]

It's a bit embarrassing to realize that she hasn't really improved all that much since then. She's definitely gotten better, but Doug's badge is still the only one that rests in her little carrying case, gathering dust.[break][break]

"Oh, thank you! So do you, Monsieur Sullivan! Your hair really suits you." There's always time for pleasantries, after all! At her side Sugar nods in agreement, waving her ribbons towards the opposing pair in greeting.[break][break]

"We're doing...okay, I think?" At least by her standards. "But we're mostly just here to have fun. I hope you're having a good time too! Let's make this a suuuuper exciting battle, okay?"

Luka nuzzles the Pikachu back, and even gives one of his fuzzy little cheeks a smooch. Sugar, standing by her side, swishes her tail in annoyance. The Sylveon has a bit of a jealous streak, it seems.[break][break]

"You're so cuteeee!" Luka doesn't seem to realize she's adding fuel to the fire as she coos at Tofu and tickles him under the chin. "Such a baby! Fighting you should be, like, illegal!"[break][break]

There's a bit of truth to that. Admittedly, Luka feels a little awkward about fighting someone who's technically her boss. Can she get fired for beating him???[break][break]

Probably not, but the thought lodges itself in the back of her mind regardless. She continues petting Tofu as Sugar seethes, facing Ollie with a sheepish half-smile. "Uhmm...not really. But I think I should start getting a little better at it, right? S-so don't go easy on us, or anything! Sugar's a lot tougher than I am, promise!"

Luka feels a conflicting storm of emotions as she watches the dream world dissolve into pixels.[break][break]
On the one hand, parts of it were a horrible experience. But others made it so, so worth it. Back at her apartment, Marjolaine is sleeping on her bed, as alive and well as the day she'd lost her. Though Luka knows she can't be the same Mienshao that she'd lost on the Darkest Day, and perhaps it's rather macabre to have a copy take her place, there's something reassuring about having her home nonetheless.[break][break]
She looks down at her Sylveon, then at the wish tag in her inventory- the last thing this place has given her. After all this, why not indulge in writing out a little wish?[break][break]
It's similar to things she's hoped for before. Luka is many things, but she isn't very original. But maybe this year, the thing she wants most will come to pass.[break][break]

I wish to love. I wish to be loved back. I wish my love could make the world a little better, and that it can make me a little stronger. I hope it can protect the people I care about, so I never have to lose anyone again.

Her head tilts to the side. She doesn't really get it, but if Cian says so it's probably true.[break][break]

He's definitely right about one thing though. They need to focus! Sugar shakes water out of her fur and tries a different approach. After effortlessly evading the hydro pump, her ribbons stretch out and attempt to wrap around the slippery frog and hold them in place.[break][break]

After that, a head-on attack is inevitable. Those same ribbons are now surged with psychic energy, as psyshock attempts to zap the poor little frog.[break][break]

NEW YEAR, NEW ME

This January, the lush greenery of Route 119 has been transformed into a winter wonderland. For the past two years, Galarian Darumaka have been coming here in droves to build snowboys, and this year is no exception. However, this time around the festivities are far more coordinated. The Pokemon Ranger’s PR rep, Miss luka chêne, has recognized the snowboy event as a popular gathering place for locals, so she and her fellow rangers are capitalizing on the opportunity to ring in the new year– and have a blast doing so![break][break]

It’s a new year after all, and with it comes untold possibilities. ‘New year, new me’ as the saying goes, and what better way to exemplify this platitude than with the ranger’s amnesty program? This event has been coordinated in order to showcase the benefits of the program, and to help assuage the doubts that civilians and other league members might have about former rockets reforming themselves. [break][break]

Many of the volunteers at the event are amnesty members, though of course they haven’t been singled out. After all, the point is to make them feel welcomed into the rangers, not ostracized. Some, however, are more noticeable than others. Remiel Calcifet stands out of course, and his generous donation to the cause is what makes much of the day possible. [break][break]

Of course, there are several others who have made invaluable contributions. Nothing would be possible without ollie morales, of course! And other amnesty members, such as Isaac Merlo, have lent their talents to the cause. In order to protect rocket defectors, Luka has hired several League officers, including Navy and Tai Liu, to provide security. Many of Remiel’s dragons also help patrol the area, though some of them seem more keen on sneaking treats from delighted children or napping next to the bonfires that help keep festival-goers warm.[break][break]

It's taken a lot of work to pull everything together, but once the stage is set, everything feels worth it. Now, all that's left is to wait for people to arrive and take in the wonderous sights before them.

THE FESTIVAL BEGINS

Snow-covered trees perimeter a clearing near Hoenn’s Weather Institute. They all sparkle with glittering fairy lights, encircling the festival in a warm and comfortable light. Within the clearing is an array of food stands, where festival-goers can indulge in all kinds of treats. There’s warm cider, hot chocolate, and mulled wine (for the adults!), Dipplin themed caramel apples, gooey mochi, and bowls of piping hot soba noodles, among other things! Vendor stalls sell masks, homemade crafts, and a variety of dragon-themed goodies for the new year. A small shrine has even been erected, reminiscent of the Draconid shrine that rests in the Dragon’s Den.[break][break]

At the center of the clearing is a large ice rink, formed courtesy of Isaac Merlo. Skate rentals are available for anyone who’d like to take a few laps around the ice! This isn’t the only service Isaac has graciously provided– with Luka’s aesthetic sensibilities and his talents combined, he’s created an array of gorgeous, intricately carved ice sculptures that stand guard around the festival. In keeping with the theme, they all resemble dragon type Pokemon. Amongst their number are elegant, undulating Dragonair, fierce Salamence, friendly-looking Drampa, cute Tatsugiri, and an enormous serpentine Rayquaza.[break][break]

However, the main attraction is still the snowboy building contest! A vast field of white serves as the stage, and the snow is perfectly packable to build snow sculptures, or to throw snowballs at unsuspecting friends! A group of Galarian Darumaka and Darmanitan patrol the fields, observing the snowboys being built and offering their critiques. They seem eager to play along with those that want their help, and the fields sing with a chorus of happy chatter and bubbling laughter.[break][break]

The festivities are already underway, but just barely. Before things get too out of hand, ollie morales steps up to make an introductory speech. As he crosses the venue’s open air stage, some of the chatter begins to die down, and eyes turn towards him.[break][break]

“Hey everyone! Hope y’all are having fun today!” The Head Ranger’s voice caries easily over the crowd as he stands onstage, wearing his usual charismatic smile. “Thanks for coming out! As you know, this is a celebration for everyone, but especially for those in need of a fresh start.”[break][break]

His green eyes flicker for a moment, reminded first of Isaac Merlo and Caleb Harcourt. “Thanks to everyone in the amnesty program for the work you do, and especially to luka chêne for pulling this event together. Let’s have a great new year together, everyone!”[break][break]

He grins, raising his fist in the air. [break][break]

“Alright, let’s have fun today!”[break][break][break][break]

ROUND ONE

SNOWBOY SHOWDOWN

An annual tradition at this point, the snowboy showdown is now beginning its third year! However, this year an entire festival has sprung up around the event, hosted by the rangers in support of their amnesty program. In this mega-thread, your character can interact with others and participate in the festival while they attempt to create the perfect snowboy![break][break]

Characters that succeed will be able to redeem a gacha pokemon, and there will be additional rewards for fulfilling weekly prompts. This year, the snowboy event will also include four rounds that will introduce new elements as well as new prompts to fulfill. Posting for each round will grant a small reward![break][break]

Rocket and League characters are all invited to participate. However, please be mindful when interacting with others! While tension and drama is totally acceptable (go wild!), please refrain from all-out faction conflicts or brawls simply due to the nature of the event.[break][break][break][break]

RULES

Include a roll at the bottom of each post to craft a part of your snowboy. You must obtain all four parts in order to make one perfectly and claim your reward!

Of course Rocket can't leave well enough alone. But the fact that it manages to surprise her anyways means that somehow, despite everything, she hasn't entirely lost her naivete.[break][break]

She doesn't know who aimed the attack at Remiel Calcifet— frankly, it doesn't matter. It's not as if she's going to go after them anyways. A faction brawl is the last thing they need now. But that doesn't mean she can sit idly by when someone she used to care for is hurt.[break][break]

Another love ball is tossed into the fray, releasing her Hatterene. Luka doesn't say anything to Remiel directly, but Parfait is able to spring into action regardless. Although too far away now to reach him directly she lifts her clawed appendage, points it in Remiel's direction, and aims a heal pulse directly at him.[break][break]

Should the prince look down, he'll merely see her sitting astride her Spectrier, with a nod and a solemn little smile her only acknowledgment.[break][break]

SNOWBOY SHOWDOWN

An annual tradition at this point, the snowboy showdown is now beginning its third year! However, this year an entire festival has sprung up around the event, hosted by the rangers in support of their amnesty program. In this mega-thread, your character can interact with others and participate in the festival while they attempt to create the perfect snowboy![break][break]

Characters that succeed will be able to redeem a gacha pokemon, and there will be additional rewards for fulfilling weekly prompts. This year, the snowboy event will also include four rounds that will introduce new elements as well as new prompts to fulfill. Posting for each round will grant a small reward![break][break]

Rocket and League characters are all invited to participate. However, please be mindful when interacting with others! While tension and drama is totally acceptable (go wild!), please refrain from all-out faction conflicts or brawls simply due to the nature of the event.[break][break][break][break]

RULES

Include a roll at the bottom of each post to craft a part of your snowboy. You must obtain all four parts in order to make one perfectly and claim your reward!

Participants are welcome to post more than once per day, but can only roll once per day to build their snowman. You do not have to reference the building of a snowman in every post and may engage in other activities with your character and others.[break][break]
Including one of the weekly prompts into your post will allow you to add or subtract 10 points from your roll.[break][break]
All of your characters may participate in the event. Each character is eligible to earn all rewards, so long as the requirements are filled!

”I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pleasantries!” Luka protests— after all, aren’t they kind of friends? ”I-it’s been a while, so I thought we could- ah!”[break][break]

The hydro pumps are launched without a warning, but luckily Sugar is faster to respond than Luka is. She tries her best to avoid the jettisons of water as they blast towards her from all directions, though it seems that those coming from the double team copies are weaker. When one hits her, she’s able to shake it off.[break][break]

However, trying to fight so many opponents at once is already an annoyance. Sugar’s ribbons unfurl and slice through a few of the copies, though not fast enough to stop their flurry of attacks. There must be a more efficient way to get rid of them, Luka reasons— unfortunately, she doesn’t have long to think of a strategy.[break][break]

”Geez! O-okay, um! Use Dazzling Gleam!”[break][break]

The glittering attack should hopefully cover most of the field and send some of those little froggies running!

Luka doesn’t have much in the way of a fancy entrance. Instead, it’s more of a frantic gallop on her Spectrier, and a desperate attempt to keep four ghostly hooves on the ground as it shivers and quakes around them. She also doesn’t have much motivation to assist Remiel Calcifet, though his Zekrom is an innocent player in all this. And if Remiel has truly changed sides, keeping the dragon safe is integral to the League.[break][break]

”This thing is…ugh! C-come on, Sugar! We need to help!”[break][break]

As soon as they’re in close enough range, a love ball is tossed into the fray. Luka’s Sylveon emerges in a flash of roseate light, a little fairy who feels almost insignificant in a battle against a legendary dragon and a djinn. But her trainer’s urgency propels her forwards, even as the icy floor burns her paws. Her ribbon feelers glow as a Springtide storm brews around her, pink winds picking up drifts of snow and chunks of glittering ice along with it. The attack is as lovely as it is deadly, and Sugar spares no time in aiming it towards the Hoopa’s grasping hands, and any other enemy they might face.[break][break]

How long has it been? Far too long, surely. Luka doesn’t seem to mind Razz’s faux pas as she greets him, her wide smile offering enough wattage for the both of them. Salem’s little wave is cheerfully returned by Sugar the Sylveon, whose undulating ribbons curl lazily around the pair like seagrass.[break][break]

”I did! I thought, well…battling isn’t really my thing, honestly. But shouldn’t it be? Uhm, but like…most of the time I find myself having to fight, it’s in these like, life or death kinda situations.” She lets out a weak laugh. ”So I thought some friendly competition might actually help! I’m sure you’ll be able to show us a thing or two!”[break][break]
