It’s cold. Really cold. The kind of cold that seeps to the bone. She doesn’t like it, and neither does the small Fletchling perched on her shoulder, his displeasure being marked by a series of agitated chirps.

”I know, Arrow. I can put you back in your pokéball if you want.”

Despite how much the small bird dislikes their environment, upon hearing his trainer's suggestion, he hops even closer to her, pressing his small yet incredibly warm body against her neck. It’s a nice feeling… although perhaps somewhat ticklish.

It makes her laugh lightly.
[break][break]
”Fine, then keep an eye out in case anything attacks us, okay?”
[break][break]
And so, they venture farther into the cave.

There’s warmth in the gesture, something fond and nostalgic that makes her smile. Lia is not one to care for things like those when they come from most people, but when it’s Penny, she gladly returns the embrace, wrapping her arms around her sister and squeezing as well. When she lets go, she beams – a smile that seems as bright as the sun.

”Sure, yeah. Let’s go!” She steps towards the door, knowing Penny will come along. But, it’s not like she’s in any particular rush, and she finds herself just so slightly tilting her head towards her sister. ”Have you been here before?”

Lia herself sure hasn’t. Her idea of “spa day” is a nice bath bomb at home, followed by a peel-off facemask and a movie.

Which, honestly, makes her both nervous and excited about this.

In her opinion, this is always one of the best parts of it: going to ancient ruins, finding artefacts never seen before, and then studying them and learning everything about them.

The discovery.

The uncovering of lost history.
[break][break]
Angelo doesn’t even need to ask. As they begin to collect samples, she gladly tells him all about them: her theories about what she thinks they are, from when, what could be done to confirm that that much is true, the historical implications if it is indeed true, and here and there, even some sprinkled anecdotes of similar experiences she’s had.
[break][break]
Lia had enjoyed working at museums because of the opportunity to work with invaluable artefacts; with actual pieces of history. But, this… this is what she loves. If it were her choice, this is exactly what she’d do every single day of her life, without a question. Travel, discover, and be utterly fascinated.
[break][break]
Yes, she gets carried away, so in truth, Angelo’s reminder is probably a good thing. It does make her pause, frowning just so slightly as she looks at the picture of the buildings that she had just taken. He has a point.

”Right… It’s weird, isn’t it?” Lowering the phone, she looks at him, having realised something she hadn’t until this moment. She had been foolish; too preoccupied with being awed by the sights before her. ”The buildings are in good condition. With them having been abandoned for so long, you’d think wild pokémon would be using them as shelter.”

Is that, perhaps, the worst foreshadowing ever?

The fact of the matter is, Lia doesn’t know who she is dealing with.

Or, more precisely, what she’s dealing with.
[break][break]
Twenty five years in this region, a year as a ranger, and yet she has never had a hostile encounter with an avatar before. In fact, despite knowing so much about their history and mythology, she has never even seen a legendary pokémon in person. So, when darkness reaches for her, she doesn’t know to recognize it for what it truly is: a deity’s power.

All she can do is gasp, eyes of gold widening as the world turns pitch black. It can’t be more than a second, maybe even two, but to her it feels as if a painful eternity: one filled with indescribable fear. A fear she has not felt since she was a child. Fear of the dark.
[break][break]
It all fades soon enough.
[break][break]
Limp, she falls to the ground, caught in horrid slumber induced by Darkrai.
[break][break]
The Decidueye tries to reach her side, to protect her, to save her. But, it’s too late. When it swoops down, a DARK PULSE sends it crashing down against an exhibit, causing glass to shatter and break. It’s only then that the security system rings with its high pitch alert, lights of a red tint flickering on and painting the museum in the colours of distress.

This also happens too late.
[break][break]
Even as the gentle scent of the Comfey's AROMATHERAPY fills the air, Lia won't wake in time. There’s no stopping the thief now, and the operator at the other end of the call is left to hear the sounds of a struggle, receiving no response to their questions about the situation.

Xander’s greeting is met with excited chirping, Arrow even giving a few little hops while remaining on Lia’s shoulder. It makes her smile, in a manner that is as amused as it is somewhat apologetic. ”That he is. I think he likes you!”

Which is a good thing, admittedly.

And it’s with that thought that her attention turns to the Raboot, listening carefully to what Xander says about her. A rescue. If reading into it enough, it reveals quite a few things about both the pokémon and its trainer alike.

”Yeah? Hi, Fran. I hope we can be friends.”
[break][break]
She means it too, although it’s for the shy pokémon’s sake that she makes sure to keep relative distance; walking next to Xander but opposite to Fran.

”I have been to a few, yeah.” To no one surprise, Lia loves museums of all kinds. ”I’m much more familiar with the few pieces at the Natural History Museum, though, since I used to work there and all.”

He knows, and she knows that he knows, but it’s not like she would blame him if he had overlooked that little tidbit of information. She’s not the most accomplished ranger out there, after all, nor is it her full time job anymore, and they haven’t done any missions together before. Shouldn’t she take this as her chance to show him what she can do, then? Maybe, but they have a job to do. There are pokémon acting aggressive, being a potential danger to people, and for Lia, putting a stop to that comes above all.

So, it’s playfully that she chides him, and when he shows concern over her safety, she simply smiles at him – in that way of hers that is so soft and sweet.

”Have a little faith in me, no?”
[break][break]
To be honest, part of the reason why she had insisted on coming is because she’s worried about his safety too, but she knows better than to voice concerns like those.

There’s no need. There’s no point. She’s not playing the game this thief seems to be trying to get her to play. First the man in the woods (Belial Stone) and now this woman…

Lia has had enough of people like them.

She has had enough of their disrespect.

”Juniper.” When its name is called, the Decidueye responds, a quill being drawn from its wing as if an arrow. A shadowy aura surrounds it, filled with eerie energy, and when it is shot, it loops around the woman before hitting the tiled floor beneath – holding her shadow in place. A SPIRIT SHACKLE meant to prevent an escape.

”I’ll gladly guide you to the police station, though.” Lia bites back with vitriol, cold and glaring at the intruder just as she makes a call. ”Hello. There’s been a break in at the Slateport Museum.”

The Decidueye screeches once more, ready for potential retaliation.

She sure does. For once, Angelo gives her good advice, because when Lia sees it, it’s as if the flow of time itself is put on hold until further notice. The expression that overtakes her soft features is one not many have seen her show, but those who have, know it well and would recognize it anywhere in the world: the awe, the fascination, and the utter amazement.

Amelia Livy, a woman who could spend hours talking extensively about countless subjects, is left completely speechless. For, what to some would seem as if no more than the ruins of a village, to her is as if priceless treasure.
[break][break]
The untouched vestiges of people of old. Ones that have not been studied until now. Perhaps even ones that there are no records of.
[break][break]
In her eyes, this is a breakthrough.
[break][break]
”Oh, Arceus…” The deity’s name is spoken with an exhale, as if finally remembering to breathe again, and when she does, a million thoughts flood her. ”Do you know how long this has been here? …Nevermind, you probably don’t. It can’t be that long, though, since not much sediment has gathered over the smaller artefacts. See? They’re just there, on the surface.”

She points towards what looks suspiciously like an ancient pokéball. It’s half-buried, sure, but it’s on the surface nevertheless. For the most part, at least. Carefully, Lia crouches down near it, but she still does not dare to touch it.

”If this place were to become a dig, analysing the stratigraphy of the area could probably tell us when the island was first settled. That is… uhmm… studying the layers of rock and soil under the surface, since they have different lithological properties and that can tell us how long ago it was that artefacts found were left there, yeah?”

”Getting a bit ahead of yourself there, Lia.”
[break][break]
After all, exciting as it may be, that’s not something they can do here and now.

What can she solve now? What answers can she give Angelo? What can they immediately get out of this?

”Hmm… Let's have a look around, but I think we should collect samples for dating. Pokéballs like this one are a good example, since we have decent records of the progress in pokéball technology and we can compare them to other obsolete models to find their contemporary. That’s Typology!” She looks back towards Angelo, grinning, and it’s then that pink hues rise to her cheeks – well aware that she’s definitely like the nerd the pilot always accuses her of being.

There’s a cough, clearing her throat before standing. In bashful contemplation, Lia reaches for her phone.

”Anyway… Mmm.. Pieces of writing would be good too. I’ll take some pictures!”

Ever since first becoming the pilot’s friend, Lia had quickly learned that gibes and quips are the weapons with which he arms himself. Aside from the literal weapons, obviously, since she’s most certainly not blind to the survival knife he carries at his belt.

The historian has her own weapons too, and they most certainly aren’t just the bow that she soon moves to her hands in order to ensure it wont get tangled with the low-hanging canopy of the tropical trees that surround them as they venture further into the island.
[break][break]
This arsenal of hers presents itself in the shape of a quirked eyebrow that forms a perfect arch of silver, an all too unimpressed look in those golden eyes of hers, and a retort spoken in a tone as sharp as the points of the arrows that are firmly attached to her bow’s quiver:

”Pot calling the kettle black, Angelo. You can’t make fun of me for being a nerd when you brag about charting the region.”
[break][break]
Then and only then, it's that she grins, a bright smile filled with amusement right before the the sound of her laughter joins that of unseen birds’ singing.

Angelo thinks he’s so very funny when telling her she can swim home, and deservingly so, the response he gets is Lia blowing a quick raspberry at him before rolling her eyes in the most dramatic way possible and turning to get off the plane. Just as she does so, there’s the slightest glimpse of a smirk, and it’s brown hiking boots that meet the sand when she jumps off – her compound bow hanging off her shoulder along with its five arrows.

Curious eyes scan their surroundings, fixing upon the lush vegetation. Was this place really inhabited once? When? By who? The questions excite her, and by the time Angelo points out the route they will be taking, she’s ready to follow along, walking beside him while her attention remains much more focused on their surroundings than on the pilot.
[break][break]
”Looks like it must have been abandoned a long time ago, honestly. We probably should be cautious 'cause of territorial wild pokémon in the area and all that...”
[break][break]
There, right there, is one of the rare instances where her historian soul and her life as a ranger convine, but admittedly, Lia doesn’t even notice or acknowledge this fact.

”Are you even going to tell me how you actually ended up all the way out here?”
[break][break]
Once again, her curiosity gets the better of her.

How is it that the phrase goes? There’s no honour amongst thieves?

Well, apparently 'no shame' should also be added to that, because the one that stands right before Lia on this night is utterly shameless. Who is she? Why is she here? Why is she trying to steal a bone that’s thousands of years old? A common thief would go for jewels or things of obvious expese, but this one did not, nor did she activate the museum’s security systems.

This is no common break in.
[break][break]
The realisation causes Lia to click her tongue. ”You’re not supposed to be here.” An obvious statement, of course, yet still one that doesn’t humour her insolent question with a response. The Comfey wraps tightly around her forearm then, and thinking fast, the historian reaches for one of the Ultra Balls at her waist. ”The museum is closed.”

Out of a red beam of light, a Decidueye appears with a screech, staring at the intruder while flying up closer to the ceiling.
[break][break]
Lia brings out her phone, ready to dial the number of emergency services, but her gaze wanders over their surroundings, knowing well that this woman is likely to care little for damaging the exhibit and that the same cannot be said for her.

Fuck. She’s at a disadvantage already.

Lia is no stranger to being overworked. It’s how she has lived her life since she was a child: pushing herself too much and too far, until it’s her own body that tells her she needs to stop in the form of fatigue too overwhelming to be ignored. When she was younger, it was academics that kept her busy: homework, studying, and one too many extracurricular activities that she always aimed to excel in. Then, her life became all about work, and after that work became both days spent at the museum and days out in the wilderness, doing a ranger’s job.

Today, she counts with the rare luxury of a day meant only to be enjoyed, and yet in the back of her mind there’s still thought of all the things she needs to do when she gets home. The kind of thoughts that she only manages to push aside when hearing her sister’s voice.

”Penny!” Her voice isn’t as loud as that of PENELOPE LIVY, but the greeting comes with a smile – one soft and sweet, tugging at her lips just as she raises a hand to wave at the redhead from a distance. Once she approaches, a chuckle precedes her next words:

”Ah, did I keep you waiting for too long? It’s good to see you, it’s been a bit.”

There’s a thousand questions she could ask, perhaps even more than that, but like a child told to stop asking ”Are we there yet?” during a long journey, she has tried to be good and keep them all to herself. The keyword here is ’tried’, of course, because even though angelo vestri may not have been able to provide her with concrete answers when it came to most topics, the questions sure did come all the same.

An uncharted island he found during his travels, remnants of ancient civilizations, first time properly exploring it…

How could she not take the bait and agree to visit the island with him? It’s the sort of adventure she used to fantasize about when playing pretend as a kid. It’s the sort of experience she used to dream of when working at the museum and handling artefacts recovered from remote locations. It’s exciting.

But, a long trip as it is, that initial giddiness had been quick to fade, until…

”Finally!” Lia exclaims before taking her headset off, her gaze fixed upon the island they had just landed on.

Golden sands are the first thing she notices. A place that looks idyllic. And then there’s Angelo’s comment…

”Oi.” Lightly so, she punches his arm when turning to him, his grin being mirrored by the one that soon tugs at her lips. ”It’s not my fault your plane’s so slow.” A joke, one spoken as she takes the headset off.

”We good to go?”

He smiles at her in a flat way that lacks much joy, and for a second, Lia finds herself wondering if Xander Belmont isn’t happy to see her after all. Or, is it perhaps that he’s just as nervous as her? She hasn’t known him for long and the most they’ve talked has been through text messages, so the answer isn’t obvious to her. Still, her own smile remains, eyes of gold meeting those of an all too similar shade.

”Ah... Thanks, you do too.” Lia can feel slight warmth rising to her cheeks, manifesting itself in the form of rose tint on her skin. Trying to pay it no mind, her gaze follows Xander’s gesture, a light chuckle escaping her when glancing at the chirping Fletchling on her shoulder. In turn, the small bird tilts its head as if questioning. ”This is Arrow, he’s a good friend of mine.”

Small beady eyes look at Xander then, and the Fletchling tilts its head to the other side.
